A truly wonderful book!
As a former resident of the Bay Area, this book defently takes me back there. The pictures are just wonderful. Bob Cameron included almost every city in the Bay Area. I highly reccomend Above San Francisco to anyone who love great cities and great photography.

Fantastic Series. This Is One Of His Best.
A new look at San Francisco. Mr Cameron always manages to find new ways of looking at familiar objects. With Herb Caen's writing, this is one of his best books.

Cameron is the best! All his books are great bargains
This the first of at least 12 of Cameron's "Above" books. He has set the standard for any aerial photography/coffee table books. With each new edition he finds interesting, stunningly beautiful shots-each one worthy of the "Above San Francisco" calendars he also publishes. With so much beauty and so many tourist sights in everyones favorite city, "Above San Francisco" is the way to see this unique city and the entire Bay Area.

And Life Goes On...

Enlightening!!!
This book demonstrates the amazing beauty, wisdom and organization that exists in the spiritual plane which we are all destined to go to sooner or later, and its constant interaction with the material plane which we are in now. This book is a powerful aid and a vigorous boost for the soul and spirit inside all of us. Written in the universal language of love, it transcends all cultural barriers and sends out a powerful message that we are all eternal beings, living through the school of many lives that we call Earth. I sincerely hope and pray that the other books by Andre Luiz be translated into English, because not only are they wonderful novels, but also they are a gateway to spiritual awareness and growth that is essential to all of us as a civilization in order to evolve.

the faith with logical reasons
This book has the same logic as the spirit's book by Allan Kardec. It is about a faith with logical reasons, it explains the reason behind the life based on the doctrine developed by professor Allan Kardec. It is a book for those who believe tere's something after death, but do not agree with the simplist explanation of the other religions. In Brazil there's a religion based on the spirit's book. And the great difference between this and the others religions, is that all answers to the questions you may have, are based on logical foundations.

Simple, but efficient
As all the other books from André Luiz, this is exceptionally good and simple. Unpretentious, he does not want to write to intellectuals and win literary prizes, but to ordinary people. Too bad the rest of André Luiz has not yet being translated to English...

Amazing Work!
I absolutely could not put this book down! From cover to cover I was hooked: The mastery of Shannon's writing style painted vivid images in my head, and kicked-started my imagination like no other book has in a very long while.

The boldest adventure on paper I've ever been on in my life, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read at the edge of their seat, and be salivating for more when they're done! It's been a while since an author could stir me up like this...a most welcome change for everyone who's tired of the S.O.S. that clutters much of our bookshelves today. Great job, Barry Shannon!

Damn the paradigm, I say...
The tale takes us to places we'd probably best never seek in person, but come wonderfully to lusty life in Shannon's seemingly simple style. Readers will wait as anxiously as will I for the further adventures of JOAT St...John; remarkably, the tale pushes the rather two-dimensional universe of the medium; The wry and apt turn of phrase, the hilarious juxtaposition of events, and the relentless insouciance of the auctorial voice seem to surpass the restrictions, taking this reader more for a flight into, through, and about marvels, than just a drive along the tired turnpike. This one carried me straight through, but already I'm going back for another look at scenes that may be experienced again and again, albeit vicariously. Shannon enters august company, nay even julian enclaves, with other paradigm- pushers such as Laurence Sterne, Richard Condon, and Thomas Perry, each uniquely enriching the volume of the reader's experience. Bold Stroke came to me as a gift, one that encourages me to hang out in anticipation of the next one; even the cover art enhances the package to the benefit of the beholder. Behold and enjoy!

Bold Stroke Scores (in my book!)
Barry Shannon has written a captivating tale with all the ingredients needed to hook me on the first page and keep me entertained all the way through. His accuracy and attention to detail is significant but never gets in the way of the action. I really liked this one and would certainly recommend it. Good show, Shannon!....hope you write another.

This reference book contains invaluable tips, advice and reviews about the vendors and venues that can make your special day extra special. Its pages contain eye opening answers and anecdotes that will spare countless hours of research and worry for even the most seasoned host.

A must-have for bay area brides and grooms
My wife and I were just married on May 13th, and this book provided us with a wealth of excellent information on wonderful vendors in the San Francisco bay area. We located our photographer (Glenn Jay Photography), DJ (Soundtrax), and many other resources here, and they were spectacular! This book not only saved us much time and work, but was also a link to some of the best wedding professionals in this area. If you're getting married within the next 2 years, please do yourself a favor and pick this book up!

By Recommendation Only is the best wedding planner out there
I got engaged last month, and one of my engagement gifts was this wonderful book. When I first went to look for a book, I did not know what to look for. This book gives me access to all the vendors within the San Francisco Bay area. I feel a lot of all the hard part of the job is done for me, and I really can enjoy the engagement. So far I have found a wonderful band, photographer, and location. As a very nervous bride that wants everything to be perfect, this has really put my mind at ease. I highly recommend this book anyone getting party or even throwing a party.

Beautiful and Meaningful Photographs
The photographs in this book work as both documentary on the state of the Maya in Chiapas and as pieces of art. Turok's visions are sensitive and understanding. One gets a sense of both place and people.

These pictures are incredible.
I went to school with Tony. He was never without his camera throughout high school. He is able to capture the "moment" through his photographs in this book. He is a truly gifted artist.

an exquisite, detailed summary of contemporary Chiapas
A marvelous visual "walk" through contemporary Chiapas. Antonio Turok's sentiments are palpable in his pictures. A 'must-have' book for those interested in modern Mexico and, particularly, Chiapas.

Attention Parents!
I actually found this book in a barber shop. The illustrations got the attention of my 2 year old. What a find! Every parent regardless of the age of their children should read this book at bed time. It had the attention of my four children, ages 2 to 10. I actually felt like I was reading my parents, and grandparents Christmas story. I was lucky enough to not have to live my life through rough times like this. I was able to have the education that my parents and grandparents worked so hard for, but only could dream of. This story helped me remember and appreciate all they had to endure. What a story it brought me back to my roots. Only warning I have for future readers... have tissues close at hand!

The Christmas Gift by Francisco Jimenez
Many Christmas books talk about wonderous gifts and fantasy that is often too commercial. This wonderful story will help children find the true meaning behind Christmas, and see that everybody does not experience Christmas in the same manner, or get every thing they want.

A beautiful and moving story.
A true story from the author's childhood, this is a beautiful and moving tale told simply in both English and Spanish. My wife and I were both dabbing our eyes with handkerchiefs by the time we finished reading. The illustrations are very well done and enhance the message of the book. Highly recommended as an antidote to the typical materialist emphasis of Christmas.

A must have if you are new to SF and looking to meet people
I would highly recommend this book for the diverstiy of interests covered. The internet addresses and contact people have changed, so that is a bit annoying, but I realize the book was written a while ago now. I can't wait to connect!

Great Resource for Locals and Visitors Looking for Fun in SF
Like everyone else I know who has purchased "Connecting in San Francisco," my copy is book marked throughout with "stickies". Sure, as a San Franciscan for six years, I knew of a number of groups and activities. For me, the most fun was learning about the ones I didn't know existed and new groups I wanted to join. I have tried many new pursuits, which have become part of my weekly routine and have vastly enriched my life. Along with recruiting friends to join me in these activities, I have acquired new friends. Most of what I have done required a minimum investment of time and money and the rewards are enormous. It's also interesting to note that this book is of great value to visitors and those who are just in the city on a temporary basis. Many listings are "drop-in" activities like two of my favorites: The San Francisco Art Association's First Thursday Gallery Nights and the free rollerblading lesson and rentals offered by Marina Skate and Snowboard. No matter how obscure you might think your interests are, you will find something in this book. And the joy in trying some new things is in discovering another side of yourself. The authors have done their research. The activities have been great fun and the environments very welcoming!

Getting out is easy!
For me going out and meeting people can be uncomfortable. I bought CISF and went to several of the organizations listed in the book. I couldn't believe how easy it was for me to fit in and have a great time. I'm going to at least one new place a week now.

Alexia Ellery Finsdale: San Francisco, 1905

Surprisingly good!
As the American Diaries series progressed, I felt as if they were regressing in their style and interest. Then came this one. Reading the back it doesn't seem nearly as exciting as the others and can be mistaken for a sleeper. But it's actually the other way around. It was much better than those hugely descriptive action books in the series (except for Emma, that one was very good). Alexia is a character that you love. You connect with her more than many of the other Kathleen Duey characters. She wants to become a seamstress (ah-ha! Finally one with a dream!) and finally found a companion in the boarding house lady (who is also a seamstress). Her mother had died and she was constantly moving around. She loves her father very much and then faces a moral dilemma when he is going to try to swindle the seamstress. Finally, we come in touch with the character and sit on the edge of our seats... waiting to see what she will do! This is one of the best American Diaries books because of it's moral choices, not because of the so called action.

A con man's daughter faces agonizing choices.
As the daughter of a travelling con man in the early 1900s, motherless twelve-year-old Alexia has always faced many moral dillemas. But it's his latest potential victim that she feels the worst about, because it's a woman that has befriended Alexia and been like a mother to her. The woman is Mrs. Tanner, who runs the boardinghouse where Alexia and her father are currently staying. He finally gets a real job, but quits and decides to swindle Mrs. Tanner, then he will flee with Alexia to another city. Can Alexia finally find the courage within her to stand up to her father, and make her own dreams come true? Read to find out! There wasn't much action here, but it was an excellant book nonetheless.

Excellent book.
Another great American Diaries. Alexia, a 12 year old girl lives in 1905 San Francisco in a boarding house with her con-man father. He goes around cheating people out of their money and now his target is Alexia's true friend, Mrs. Tanner, the owner of the boarding house. Alexia has to stop this. But will she have the courage to do so?READ IT!

Good book for great cause.
This book was very interesting. Not only did it have plenty of photos, the text was actually useful and have a great message. Reading Galen's work is just as great as looking at it. I had never even heard of or seen most of the places in the book until I got the book. Now, I'm walking some of the same trails I discovered in the book.

Wild in the Streets!
An incredible photographic argument that nature is ever-present, fecund, and indomitable! Rowell and Sewell capture the majesty of one the world's most beautiful urban areas to describe nature's ability to adapt and thrive next to mankind. A surprising array of wild animals are photographed within the ex-urban landscape and combine with dramatic Bay Area landscapes to make a compelling story of the beauty that surrounds us--if only we can take time out from our busy lives to see it! This is a great gift to bring back East for the holidays.

Love and landscape photography
Galen Rowell is showing here surely the nicest landscape shots I have ever seen. The Bay Area, that I didn't know, is here in spades, and if you know a little bit of tech, you see several uses of Galen special shooting way (flash, A2 Nikon filtering, s.o.)
