The First Book Ever Published on Garabandal
What is unique about this book is that the author went to Garabandal while the apparitions were in progress, and was thus an eyewitness to many of the extraordinary ecstasies of the four visionaries. He also spent time with the visionaries when they were not in ecstasy, and interviewed them extensively, particularly Conchita. The first edition, in Spanish, was published in Spain in August of 1965; the last apparition did not take place until November 13, 1965. Thus, this book is written by an eyewitness with his experiences at, and facts about Garabandal, fresh in his mind, at a time when they were easily verifiable. Essential reading!

Appearance of Impropriety
Walter Walker is an excellent, regrettably overlooked crime writer with a terrific ear for contemporary vernacular speech, an aptitude for the devious plot, and a mordant view of human nature. Walker's first book, "A Dime to Dance By" (~1982), told the story of a lawyer fighting local political corruption and skullduggery involving an old graveyard (no pun intended) in the City of Quincy, Mass. I greatly enjoyed that book when I was a starting attorney.

Walker brings his incisive wit this time to the professional basketball arena. A profit obsessed, self-made, supermarket chain owner has just purchased the Golden Gaters, an underachieving San Francisco team. Walker's rich character palate includes the burnt out coach Booby Sinclair, his star forward, W.E.B. Pancake, and a doomed sports scribbler who uncovers evidence for a sinister cause of the team's losing ways.

This book is a wonderful read that begins with a moment of bathos as the new owner's locker room speech to his team is nearly drowned out by a growing chorus of farts. It continues with excellent descriptions of basketball play and practice, good character development, and creative plot twists. Each sentence may be savored.

We should pray that the author's San Francisco personal injury law practice loses its appeal enough and that this talented writer will pick up his authorial pen again soon. If you like John T. Lescroart and George V. Higgins, you'll love Walter Walker.

Intelligent, engaging architectural scholarship
John Bury, a British scholar, very poetically and intelligently observes the special nature of the Brazilian Baroque architectural style. It is an important book for any Baroque scholar who can read Portuguese and a fine addition to art history libraries. The photos and plans alone can provide insight into the Baroque style in Brazil. All of the articles were originally published in English. Those with a shaky knowledge of Portuguese can read the English texts at a library and the book can provide the accompanying images.

A Durable Tribute to a Fine Art Critic
ART IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA 1945 - 1980 is the last written document by the highly regarded, departed writer and critic Thomas Albright. Always an elegant writer, even when his message was quircky, Albright has left us with the definitve volume on the important art of San Francisco in the peak of its heyday. The chapters each represent a lecture presented by Albright and include indepth studies of Clyfford Still and the Explosion of Abstract Expressionism, Before the Storm: The Modernist Foundation, The Watershed: Funk, Pop, and Formalism, "Back to Nature": The Bay Area Figurative School, Conceptualism, Photorealism, etc. The written word is well illustrated with selected examples, but therein lies the only weakness of this book. In an overview this solid it would be so much finer were there double the number of examples of the artists being discussed. Still in all this is a magnificent volume and should be a part of every art library.

A starting point for Bay Area historical and museum enthusia
The author has given us an amusing and insightful look at the Art scene and history of the Bay Area and for frosting on the cake given us the location particularly in the Bay area, Monterey and Sacramento the location of Museums which have some of the art described in the book. As history and museum devotees the book will go with us when we visit these places to enhance our pleasure and increase our knowledge of the pictures we are looking at. We have in all probability looked at some of these pictures without comprehension at Sacramento, Oakland, and several museums in SF. The picture the author presents includes meaningful presentations of other related art centers to which the artists went. Excellent small book, a pleasurable read.

THE 5 STARS GO TO CHICO XAVIER
Excellent book! The author has a great talent to get you into Chico's life and stories/passages as if you were there, experiencing them. Once you start reading it, you don't really want to stop. But truely the best of it is the example Chico has set for all of us, and this is one of the best guidelines we could ever have on how to lead our lives as we focus on our own evolution. Chico is one of the best examples of humility, patience, love and proves to have understood Jesus' teachings!
