The Book That Never Left My Mind's Eye
I first read "B-Ball: The Team That Never Lost A Game" when I was in my seventh grade English class. We had to choose a book to read from the teacher's collection, and this one just drew me in. The title is what caught my attention. What sports fanatic wouldn't want to read about some incredible basketball team that could never be beaten? It's seemed too good to be true. I began to read this book and quickly realized that this team was a different type of team. It was a recreational league team that was comprised completely of mentally challenged players. The author of this book was the coach of team. He took the job having never dealt with these types of people before. In their first practice he quickly became frustrated that the team members had no real sense of competition and didn't understand his ideals of how to play basketball correctly. In the beginning he nearly quit, but hung on because he felt something deep down that told him to keep trying. He continued with his team and his practices. They played their first game, and to his surprise, the coaches of the other teams in their league, also comprised of mentally challenged individuals, did not keep score, and played for fun. After weeks of these games, the author/coach came to the realization that basketball is to be played for fun, not for competion, for recognition, or for money. As long as everyone had fun, everyone was a winner. He continued coaching his team through the years, and his team continued winning. They eventually broadened their competition, and played regular school teams, high school teams, and other recreational teams made up of players who were not mentally challenged. Each and every game however, they found a way for every player on both times to just enjoy themselves as much as possible. And in this way, the team won every game they played. Along with the focus on the basketball aspect of this book, other areas were covered. How people dealt with these mentally challenged basketball players was shown well, and the problems that the coach and his players had to deal with to play some of the teams they did was the focal point of the book. It was a great book about how one can deal with a mental disability, and still have the time of their life. I last read this book nearly four years ago, but I still remember it vividly in my mind. I read it more than once in that English class in 7th grade; I probably read it 10 times. I am not a huge fan of books, but I loved this one. I it one of my favorite books of all time, and I feel that everyone should read it. If you can find a copy of it, read "B-Ball: The Team That Never Lost A Game".

Great book!
This book is up to date, relevant, and "rings true" when it provides opinions. It's of most help to people in SF, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, or Marin Counties. We picked it up at about 6 months pregnant, and were impressed at how closely the advice and listings matched what we had experienced ourselves or heard from others. The listings and descriptions of baby stores, for example, along with phone numbers, was worth the price. This book is about where to find products and services; couple it with Baby Bargains to help decide what you need.

first-person fiction
this book is cool because of the specificity in relation to the Bay Area and San Francisco and how the characters run into trouble and the multitude of ways in which they escape the long arm of the law.

this is classic noir fiction, wherein a couple has to do whatever is necessary to stay out of jail, and the police and feds close in quick. very cool and fun fiction.

Barbary Coast Trail Official Guide
Wonderful map/guidebook in one thats small enough not to be a burden on the hike. The hike takes you from the old mint on powell street through chinatown, financial district, north beach, pier 39 and fishermans wharf with a cable car return (Don't forget to stop by the cable car museum). There are optional side trips to coit tower/telegraph hill (views of golden gate bridge, alcatraz) and nob hill. The city street-trail takes you through every must-see attraction in san francisco, and the guidebook provides you with the history. An excellent way to see San Francisco, with plenty of different culinary treats along the way !

excellent
Kanin's research is solid, and for those interested in San Francisco during the Gilded Age, or labor history, this is a must-read. Focusing in on a clique of unionists that seized contol of the city government, with a particular emphasis on Patrick Henry McCarthy. No, he was not a typical business unionist, but rather a urban progressive who combined a pratical wage-worker consciousness with a social reform mentality. On the other hand, he had no problem fusing a racist ideology into his form of progresivism. If you bothered to read this review, buy this book.

Heart-touching book that portrays Mexican Amer. urban life
I love this book. This is real literature that Mexican/Mexican American children can relate to; Not only children with Mexican backgrounds, but immigrant children overall. My favorite part is page 10 where Jose stares at the mural painted by the Salvadoran painter (Salvadoran struggles are rarely depicted in literature). This book moved me so much that I am motivated to visit Mission District, San Francisco to experience that beautiful atmosphere first hand.

Thank you, A Southern Californian (Latina)Elementary School Teacher

A Stunning, Dark Passage
In this beautifully translated edition of Alejandro Morales's breath-taking and heart-wrenching novel, we are invited to re-live (or experience for the first time) the modern, barrio existence. Lives filled with violence, sex, drugs and, yes, hope, are embodied in Morales's protagonists, Julian and Mateo. The novel now includes an insightful introduction by Francisco A. Lomeli (who also translated the Spanish text) as well as a bibliography of works by and about Morales. This Bilingual Press edition juxtaposes the English text on the left with the corresponding original Spanish text on the right for easy comparison. This is a powerful novel that should be read by all.

unexpected honesty
This book offers a straightforward assessment of political principles as they are, not as they should be. It is to-the point, informative, and often startling in its conclusions. It is a quick read, and one i would definitely reccommend for anyone interested in the nature of politics and its role in shaping our world and our lives.
