The Circuit
I read the book called The Circuit, when I started read that book, I really like it, I read that book like a lot of times, and I still like the book right now, this is a great book i didn't see before, and i read the book called Breaking Through which is continued The Circuit, that book is good,too.. I have an idea, when you finished The Circuit, why don't you read the book named Breaking Though, I think that you will like it, too... Franciso Jimenez is an good author, I like his books. Anyways.. truse me, read the book named Breaking Though

A captivating view of migrant life from a child's eyes
This is a book that is suitable for all ages. Jimenez manages to describe his childhood in a manner that captivates the reader. I could not put the book down once I began reading. Do not think that just because these events happened long ago, that migrant families do not experience some of the same horrors today, for they do. I teach ESL to adult migrant workers and after reading this book I have an even greater respect for these hard working individuals. The farms and ranches of California could not exist as they do today without migrants who do the back breaking work in the fields. Most evenings at class my students (both men and women) come in directly from the fields, their eyes bloodshot, their hands rough and calloused, their backs bowed over. But they come eager to learn English so they can get a better job, or so they can help their children have a better education. An admirable people and Jimenez's book provides insight into their difficult working and living conditions.

A must-read
A fast read, but also a must-read for all ... especially teachers in the Southwestern part of the U.S. where we encounter so many migrant families. It really opens your eyes and helps you see a little piece of what people go through.

Finding the right site made easy
Finding a good site on O`ahu is no longer hit or miss. I've never seen a more complete book on shore diving on O`ahu...and I've got a few books on my shelf as I am a bonifide "water rat." This book has got a lot of info you need to know in order to make a good choice because it describes snorkeling and dive sites on all shores...not just the popular ones. The author also talkes about things you've got to know, like weather and surf conditions, somethings visitors should be familar with to be safe. This book would not only benefit visitors, but locals as well because there are many sites listed that are unknown. If you want a good guide chocked full off facts and excellent maps, this is the one.

Diving or Snorkeling on O`ahu, get this book!
I'm new to O`ahu and diving, and I'm confident that I will surely benefit from this guide book. This is a great guide that covers all the snorkeling and diving sites on O`ahu that are worth exploring. This book has more information packed into 160 plus pages than several other larger books combined. Good pictures, facts, and author's insights on 26 sites. I didn't know there was a suitable dive site near Honolulu (Ala Moana), even though I've driven by there many times, but sure enough there is and the author described it to a "T." If you want to get into shore diving, or expand on your snorkeling, get this book. Shore diving opens up a whole new world because there are hundreds of miles of coast line on O`ahu and this book gives you the confidence you need to explore on your own. That is what I liked most about this book.

Finally a dive guide worth reading!
This book exceeded my expectations! A very detailed guide on what you'd need and want to know to enjoy some great diving and snorkeling while in the islands. I'm waiting for the next, in what I hope to be a series from this author, of dive and snorkeling guides for the other popular islands in Hawaii. The author gives you the simple low down on where to dive and what to expect. Accurate down to the last word on each of the 26 sites. I especially found helpful the many detailed maps and site descriptions. This greatly assisted me in selecting a site equal to my diving skills. I'm stoaked to return to O`ahu to check out more of Francisco's sites. Definitely worth the price.

A masterpiece - a precious gift!
This was the 1st book I read on my road to recovery 35 years after having been a victim. It helped give me the courage, strength and hope to move forward toward on my own journey towards healing.

Compelling and Well-Written, Struck Me Right To The Core
As difficult as it was for me to read this book, due to it's similarity to my experience, I found it to be so extremely compelling--I couldn't put it down! Ms.Francisco has an incredible command of the English language and was able to communicate in painful detail, her inner-most thoughts and feelings, before, during and after the rape. As I read this book, I went through and highlighted many many many passages that I felt pertained directly to me.....so that my husband could read it and gain better insight into what I was and still am thinking. This is a wonderful, amazing book, that both rape survivors and non-rape survivors can benefit from.

Inspiring and truthful
This was truly a great book. I could identify so well with all that was said. I had all the members of my family read it and have recommended it to many because it is of such high quality.

Hitler Stopped By Franco

Franciso Franco: Protector of Sephardic Jews
Many have the true notion that Spanish Dictator Francisco Franco craftily prevented his Civil War ally Adolf Hitler from marching 20 divisions through Spain in World War II and occupying British controlled Gibraltar. This prevented the Axis from sealing off the western end of the Mediterranean and made a major contribution to ultimate Allied victory.

What many may, however, learn for the first time in the Jane and Bert Boyars' 2001 documentary novel HITLER STOPPED BY FRANCO is that Franco also got away with provoking Hitler by his bold assistance to Jews.

An introductory quote (p. 104): "The Sephardim, Jews of Spain and Portugal, had not seen Spain since Ferdinand and Isabella had expelled them in 1492 after giving them the opportunity to remain by becoming true Catholics."

Franco's positive attitude towards Jews is at least six years older than Hitler's 1933 rise to power in Germany. As early as 1927 as a fighting Colonel commanding thousands of men in Spanish Morocco, Francisco Franco received permission from Madrid to use his troops to protect from Muslims the local Sephardic Jews. The Sephardic community was grateful and in 1936 supported Franco with money at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

In 1927 Spanish dictator Primo de Rivera had also told Franco that Sephardic Jews might return to Spain, become citizens and worship as they pleased. This invitation was deep in Franco's memory when, in 1940, French Jews began beseeching Spanish authorities in Vichy France for asylum on the basis of Spanish citizenship. (p. 104)

As told by Franco's wife to the authors, Franco then briefly but decisively mulled over what to do. "...I have sworn to give my life protecting Spaniards." (p. 105)

After prayer, Franco authorized issuing Spanish passports to Sephardim as their right under Spanish law. Asked by consular officials how to tell Sephardim from non-Sephardim, Franco ruled, "They are all Sephardim."

By September 1940 Hitler was pressuring Franco to cede to Germany one of the Canary Islands and to allow the Wehrmacht to march on Gibraltar through Spain. (p.106)

By November 1940 Hitler told Serrano Suner, Franco's brother-in-law, that he had at the moment 186 inactive German divisions and he intended to use some of them to take Gibraltar. Nor had he failed to notice Franco's Jewish policy. "Spanish passports are being issued to Jews who have never seen Spain, nor have their ancestors in precisely 448 years. ... Suddenly French are Spanish. And from Poland suddenly Poles are Spaniards. And in Denmark and the Netherlands ... overnight my enemies have Spanish passports and are able to leave my jurisdiction." (p. 159)

And leave they did. Nor did Jews ever forget that Franco was their benefactor. For the rest of this little known story -- and for much more-- read HITLER STOPPED BY FRANCO.

-OOO-

Very revealing! Amazing historical information !
This book is certainly a most amazing and remarkable feat.It reveals quite a number of historical events and facts that demolish many myths and prejudices regarding Francisco Franco.Especially interesting is his protection of the many hundreds, perhaps thousands,of persecuted Jews in the face of Hitler's monstrous nazi death onslaught.Franco's handling of the WWII "Axis of Evil",his retaining Spain out of the war in spite of ominous and overwhelming pressures, his almost unique humanitarian and compassionate assistance to the to- be- murdered Jewish people, his patriotism and devotion to Spain and rock solid serenity in the face of great dangers is well documented and source supported in this book. What a pity that these achievements have received such little attention!Could it have been that Communism enormous propaganda resources did'nt take kindly to Franco's defeat of its attempt to take over Spain?.....Bravo for the Boyars!!!!

Wonderful read. Incredible accuracy. Franco saved Humankind!
This book has so many great moments that I cannot list them all here without getting close to rewrite the full book again! FIRST GREAT MOMENT: The authors fictional depiction of how the world could be now. Just imagine this: A svastika flag over the White House! And, you know? If Franco hasn't stopped Hitler we could probably living that nightmare nowadays! SECOND GREAT MOMENT: The very beginning of the book, when you grasp a taste of the narrative style. Just begining to read it you KNOW you are going to enjoy it. THIRD GREAT MOMENT: Of course, the historical meeting at Hitler's train in the Spain's border at Irun-Hendaye. The fact that the authors could interview and tape record directly the only survivor from that reunion (Serrano Suñer) gives this chapter an incredible significance! FOURTH GREAT MOMENT: When you discover that the misterious man helping Franco with information on Germany's most secret moves was, actually, German admiral Canaris. Great scene! FIFTH GREAT MOMENT (AMONG DOZENS OF OTHERS): When the Allies and the Germans seem to be ready to invade Spain, and Franco is, in the middle of all that tension JUST OIL PAINTING!

Another important thing is to read and confirm that PRESS manipulation has always existed. It's incredible how that time media were totally biased and misinforming about the realities of Spain, and about the real character of Franco. This book is not only about a circumstance that did change History. This book could and SHOULD change the perception people have of Franco himself. But go ask the jews: they just call him the GREATEST benefactor of the jews amidst the WWII havoc.

Go read it. At the appendix's part after the end of the book, you can confirm that it is totally and painfully documented. But, besides its factual ground, it is a wonderful novel to read. Oh! And prepare to enjoy the tension, like in any good thriller, even when you know the final outcome of events. Five stars, for this book, absolutely!...

Fun for Residents and Tourists Alike
I would make one small addition to the other reviews. Lunchtime Walks in San Francisco, Gail Todd, is as useful for tourists as is it for residents! It became a permanent addition to our library after we were able to flip through a copy at the Rand McNally Store in San Francisco. For those not having the opportunity to peek first, this is a wonderful resource for trip planning. The walks aren't too long (about an hour for most), are centrally located, and a handy map is included with each. Information is provided on the history and the architecture of the area, shops, restaurants, picnic areas (yes, even in San Francisco there are areas for relaxing and enjoying your lunch in the great outdoors), and gorgeous views. Perfect for the visitor wanting to take some delightful jaunts including the 'must see' sites in a city that is made for walking. We've already book marked several of the 33 walks for our next visit to the city by the bay.

If you live in San Francisco, BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!
Now that Spring is here, Gail Todd's walking guide to San Francisco is indispensible for anyone living in the City and looking for a new way to explore it. Beautiful pictures, detailed maps, tons of great ideas for lunchtime walks -- this guide has it all.

You'll See The City With New Eyes
As a 20-year resident of San Francisco, I'm pretty jaded when it comes to guidebooks about my city, but this book is a real treat! The author's fresh approach and clear, concise information makes this book a pleasure to read. Buy two and give one to a friend.

A Bone Chilling Incredible Horror Story
This is a book everyone should read. It is a factual account of deeds ordinary human beings would not even dream of doing to one another. But these people were evidently no more than animals. Their thoughts and actions proved beyond doubt that our society has elements within it that should not be free to prey on others under any circumstances. In fact, in my mind, these kinds of people should not even be allowed to live. I cannot imagine that the media never reported these atrocities as racist crimes -- yet they certainly were. Of course this would have been politically incorrect then as it is today. The entire thing is almost impossible to imagine taking place, but it did. How many of these killers were executed for their beastly murders? How many did the taxpayers have to continue feeding in prison cells? How many are back on the streets today? How many more like thinking Blacks are roaming the streets looking for a chump to kill. This book will certainly make the reader ask such questions. It should open the eyes of many.

Hauntingly Truthful Piece of History
Howard Clark's book Zebra is hauntingly truthful. My family member was a murdered victim of the "Death Angels" horrific crimes. The cult was an off shoot of the Muslim religion and to achieve the highest status and a possible trip to Mecca, they were to murder and maim as many white victims as they could. Points were "earned", the highest amount being white children, then white women and the least white men. When you read this book it can be shocking and unbelievable that such crimes do actually happen. San Francisco was terrified during the 70's when these crimes were being committed and Mr.Clark's book invokes that same terror in you as you read the book. This book even includes actual photos.

TERRIFYINGLY TRUE!!!!!!
A terrifying true story of brutality, mutilation and mass murder. It is the story of a fanatical cult whose religious initiation consisted of hacking to death nine white men,or five women, or four children in order to attain the exalted rank of "Death Angel" No one knows how many members actually attained their "Death Angel" wings, but ZEBRA is the true account of five who tried. A haunting look inside the twisted minds of men who convinced themselves that their bloody cause was a noble one.

The Girl Who Remembered Snow
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (1996)
Author: Charles Mathes
Amazon base price: $23.95

Pretty darn good
My only quibble with this book is that the plot verges on something out of Ludlum or (yikes!) Sheldon. But the narrative is wonderful -- smooth and well-paced -- and the characters are interesting and well-drawn. In a field crowded with wooden and poorly-edited clunkers, this was a refreshing find. I hope Mr. Mathes gets noticed by the paperback majors soon -- he deserves it.

Definitely one of my favorites!
This book was incredible. I've read it three times, and every time I get caught up in the story and the characters. My mother read the book, and also loved it. Emma is so well created that I start to feel like I'm living her story, and experiencing what she experiences. I definitely recommend this to everyone!

searching for snow but finding a life
i read this book in one sitting and couldn't turn the pages fast enough! emma as heroine is alive, spunky and full of zest--her inquisitiveness makes the story happen...a clever title which ties the entire story together!

A Kiss in the Dark (G K Hall Large Print Book Series (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by G K Hall & Co (1999)
Author: Meryl Sawyer
Amazon base price: $23.95
Average review score:

One of the Best Love Stories!
This book was incredible!! It was sexy, page-turning, & emotional all at once (similar to an SEP novel). It was such an unexpected surprise; I've never read Meryl Sawyer before but now I'm very curious to see if her books are always this well-crafted and moving. The love story between Mitch and Royce is possibly the most passionate and plausible I've ever read in a romance novel. If I had any complaints, I'd say that the resolution to the mystery needed to be explained better. I cried more than once reading this book, but at the same time, it's steamy...and has an uplifting sweetness to it. Read this book!

Very Good
This book is very hard to find. I won it at Amazon auctions. I'm glad I read it. Mitch, a criminal attorney with a very sad past and Royce, a columnist who hates him because he convicted her father 5 years prior. She's accused of theft and he's there to defend her. I usually figure who is the villian in most books but this one fooled me. I didn't like it that Royce's uncle conducted an investigation on Mitch even though he specifically told Royce not to do it. Right... Royce didn't do it but she didn't demand her uncle seize. That was the least she could do as she couldn't afford his attorney fees. Nevertheless, it made for a good story. I loved it that they had this chemistry that neither could deny, hard as they tried. I recommend this book to anyone who can find it, although, Tempting Fate is still my favorite.

One Of Her Finest !
Any fan of Meryl Sawyer's never has to worry about setting high expectations with her books, and "A KISS IN THE DARK " is no exception. This one delivers. This is one of my favorites. A romance that practically sizzles off the pages, and a mystery that has more twists and turns that a pretzel ! Mitch Durant is a tough, smart yet unfailingly likeable guy, and Royce Ann Winston is his perfect foil. Both are trying to keep their lives in some kind of order , yet fate keeps throwing them curves - and throwing them together! Trust was what nipped their relationship in the bud years before, and now Royce realizes that trusting Mitch might be the only way out of the mess she's found herself in. Meryl Sawyer has again given readers a sexy, touching love story, and a crackling mystery that keeps you turning the pages at a fever pitch. Beg , borrow, or steal this one folks! It's FANTASTIC !

Murder Follows Money: A Liz Sullivan Mystery (G K Hall Large Print Paperback Series)
Published in Paperback by G K Hall & Co (1901)
Author: Lora Roberts
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

An "edge of your seat" adventure
This is one of the better books of a good series, funny and exciting with an "edge of your seat" narrative. Lora Roberts does an excellent job portraying the edgier side of life in her Liz Sullivan series, where money isn't always available and sometimes the Thrift Shop is a necessity. Yet, she also manages to lighten this with some wonderful and sly humor and engaging friends. Liz's friends (including her dog) bring her much needed support and enrich the stories though they take a backseat in this book (except for a couple of memorable and surprisingly funny scenes at gunpoint). This particular book in the series was mesmerizing. I couldn't put it down till I found out what happened to Liz and her latest "temp job from h-ll." If you haven't read any of the previous books I would recommend you do so to see how Lora has allowed Liz to grow into herself. Yet, this books stands alone as a wonderful and exciting adventure.

I Read it in One Day!
This book was really incredibly written. Even though I have never read any books in the series except this one, I'm sure that this book was a good one to start with. Murder Follows Money is funny in it's own way, and also provides an amazing mystery which was also fun to solve. I read this book in one entire day, all during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I just couldn't put it down. It made me sad when I had finally finished the book. It was one of those page-turning mysteries that I absolutely love. I feel that Lora Roberts has created a never-ending series with a very interesting character. Liz Sullivan is the kind of character that you wish that you could get to know in person. Believe me, this is a great book and I recommend it to anybody who loves mystery!

Humorous and entertaining
Freelance writer Liz Sullivan takes on a temp job as media escort for food/lifestyle celebrity Hannah Couch, who, it turns out, is quite the opposite of her friendly, grandmotherly image. And her waspish, vindictive personal assistant, Naomi Matthews, is even worse. After someone downs a fatal Pellegrino with lime, and a couple of abductions at gunpoint ensue, Liz, who is a prime suspect, must find out who doctored the drink. Though two of the major characters are exceedingly unpleasant, there are plenty of more appealing ones, not the least of which is Liz herself, a likable, sympathetic amateur detective. On the whole, this whodunit is funny, sometimes outlandish, and very entertaining. This is the first of Lora Roberts' mysteries I've read, and I now plan on reading the first four books of the series.

Strawberry Sunday: A John Marshall Tanner Novel
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (1999)
Author: Stephen Greenleaf
Amazon base price: $23.00
Average review score:

A Tasty Greenleaf
This excellent Greenleaf novel opens with Tanner recovering from a gunshot wound in a hospital. He meets a young woman there who has many more problems than himself. She gets him back into "life". But later she is found murdered. Tanner has made promises to her and intends to carry them out. Villains had better beware. Great stuff!

Worthy of an Edgar.
Strawberry Sunday, by Stephen Greenleaf, was nominated for an Edgar Award, 2000 -- and reading it, it's not difficult to see why. This is a mystery novel with a social conscience and a wry sense of wit. It begins with the hero, P.I. John Marshall Tanner in a hospital recovering from a gut shot and mourning the death of his close (cop) friend Charley Sleet, but most of the action takes place in the California Salinas agricultural community. Tanner has resolved to find out who murdered Rita Lombardi, a fellow hospital patient who wants to better the life of farm workers.

There are lots of red herrings, wonderful characters, and witty and often hilarious dialogues with them (and with himself). Tanner often reaches wrong conclusions and gets plenty of egg on his face, but in the end he prevails; he's a tough guy with loads of grace. Strawberry Sunday is a punchy, funny, touching novel. Read it.

Terrific, as usual
As a long time fan of Greenleaf and Marsh Tanner, I thoroughly enjoyed Strawberry Sunday. I love books that inform and challenge me as well as entertain, and can always count on this author to accomplish that.

A rumor has been circulating that Greenleaf planned to retire the Tanner series, and with the last book seemed to have done so, in a most excruciating way. With this book, Marsh has been returned to me and I can imagine him, one of the rare really good people, continuing to do what he does best.
