The Memoirs of Field-Marshal Kesselring (Greenhill Military Paperbacks.)

The safeguarding of historic art treasures.
Albert Kesselring was the commander of German forces in Italy during World War 2, but his memoires cover his entire military service, from pre-WW1 through WW2. He waxes nostalgic on the friendly pre-WW1 relations between the German troops stationed near France, and the ladies across the boarder. (What would the Boarder Patrol think of it!) His discussion of the post-WW1 period focusses largely on the circumstances of his transfer from the army to the air force. An intermediate amount of coverage is given to the early WW2 period, with the latter part of the war in Italy dominating the memoires, much as it dominated his career. Hauptsturmfuhrer Otto Skorzeny (the commando leader who freed Mussolini) commented in his own memoires about his differences in methodology from those of Kesselring, and Kesselring takes this opportunity to provide his side of the matter. In addition, Kesselring discusses why he was chosen as the commander most uniquely qualified to serve as a liason with the Italians. Several sections cover the important steps he took to preserve historic art treasures in the midst of the destruction of war, and his views on the criminal nature of guerillas who disguise themselves as civilians in violation of the Geneva Convention.

Who was Henry Barber?
A decent biography of Barber although it was published when he was only 28. It's hard to imagine such a prolific climber fading away at such a young age, you don't hear about him much now-a-days. This book isn't really written in chronological order and each chapter really can almost stand alone. Details his trips to Austraila and Germany the best. Gives insight into the statement I hear often climbing, 'Oh, that's a Henry Barber route,' which mean that it was probably hard. A must read for any Northeast based climber.

Shudder Pulps: A History of the Weird Menace Magazines of the 1930's
Published in Paperback by New American Library Trade (October, 1978)
Author: Robert Kenneth Jones
Amazon base price: $4.95
Used price: $18.00

Indispensible for those interested in this subgenre of pulp
Jones's book focuses on the subgenre of pulp known as the "weird menace" tale. Due to the sensational nature of these stories they were neglected. Jones was one of the few original critics in this area. His book covers different magazines, publishers, and authors. He also focuses on different conventions within the subgenre. One shortcoming of the book is that, at times, it seems to rely too much on quotes directly from the primary texts (pulps). On an entertainment level, Jones's exuberance easily translates through his writing. This book is hard to find, but worth it for fans and scholars of the "weird menace" tale.

Understanding Strategy
This book, a collection of essays by some of the world's leading historians and political scientists gives a reader a glimpse into both the theroetical structure and real life examples of military structure. This is not a textbook on military strategy however, and the examples may not always directly illustrate every given aspect of the theory. But if you want a taste for strategy - it is highly recommended.

a breakthrough book, but a bit slanted
paxton's book was a breakthrough in that it showed to what a huge extent the vichy regime's odious policies weren't simply imposed by the germans, but were carrying out willingly and represented the revenge of right-wing, catholic, nationalistic france against the left, unions, and jews and other foreigners. but at times the book goes a little too far and borders on cheap anti-frenchness. his denunciations of the vichy regime and the elements of france they represented are well backed up, but he's on much shakier ground when he tries to downplay the role of and support for the resistance and charles de gaulle. overall, a chilling, important book, but it should be read as a book about vichy, and not as a definitive book about all aspects of france under the occupation, as it purports to be.

Fluoroscopy Manual For Pain Management

Respectfully disagree
I am a fellowship-trained interventional pain management physician, and I purchased this book with high hopes after reading the first review and the editorial summary. I received it, and promptly returned it. It really falls short in my opinion. The positioning pictures uses three pictures that really add very little to the basic knowledge of positioning the fluoroscopy unit. It does not make the effort to explain nuances of using the C-arm to open up the facet joints, etc. The pictures of the blocks performed show only the final placement of the needle, without any guidance on how to get it there, which is what is really needed in a text such as this. Furthermore, the image quality is remarkably poor in some of the shots. I think anyone interested in a guide on using fluoroscopy for pain management is better off waiting for Prithvi Raj's book, which is due in fall, 2002. His book on Pain Management is excellent and I expect nothing less with his upcoming book, which I have pre-ordered.

A Must-have Manual
We have been using this amazing, comprehensive manual in our pain practice for 4 months. The time that is saved by ustilizing the author's concise explainations of correct patient and flouroscope positioning has cut out time per procedure down and increased the quality of images 3-fold.

Included, are flouro images of each simple and complex procedure performed.

I highly recommend this manual to any radiologic technologist, interventional pain management physician, orthopedist, neurosurgeon and physical medicine and rehabilitation physician.

Radiology departments everywhere should have at least one copy for those technologists who are asked to participate in any injection or implantation procedure.

The cost of this easy-to-use book is paid for in a few days of using it!

Worst physics book ever
Not helpful at all. This book dosn't take the time to explain anything, or any of its examples. Right from the start this book sets itself up to be a "deep in the old library, only PhDs find this a helpful reference" type book. From its strictly black and blue printing, to how it expects you to take what it says "as is" without a hint of explaination as to why it is.

A classic!
Although there are a few topics that I would leave for more advanced courses and a few others I would present in more detail (even for beginner courses), it is a generally well-balanced book with great explanations on the concepts of Physics. The notation is very good and the graphics and drawings are perfectly sketched and provide great help for understanding the text. Each chapter presents a brief description of what will be studied in it and the book features some historical notes in a few topics. There is a wide list of exercises at the end of each chapter from straightforward exercises to more mindful ones. It also presents some exercises using English units in addition to the ones with International System units.

Don't fix it if it ain't broke
Although this text is very, classically, text-ish (minimal illustrations, black and blue ink only, dry writing), it still stands out as a high quality introductory physics text. I used it in my intro level classes, at a university that emphasizes physics education theory. I figure with all the research they have done on undergraduate physics education, their choice to use HRK could not have been one made randomly. I continue to refer to it over the newer, flashier additions, because it still gets the job done, without skipping details in exchanges for full color photos.

fair
While the book does present an accurate and unbiased view of world religions, the text itself is less than gripping (the writing is dry), and the book's organization is a little confusing. This may not be the best text to use if you are interested in getting a clear, overall picutre of a particular religion. It includes studies of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

This one will make you pull your hair out!
Unless you go to Haaaaarvaaard (I always forget how many A's to put), you are probably going to be a bit perplexed by the content of this book.

The cases go WAY beyond what is covered in the Chapters, and its up to the instructor to try to fill in the gaps (hopefully your instructor realizes this).

I have found myself referring to my textbook from my intro accounting course more often than this book itself in order to grasp the concepts at hand. Seriously, this book is a punishment to anyone who has to buy it for school. And its FREAKIN heavy to haul around across campus.

'Nough said.

Too dense.
I used this book for my MBA and found it to be lengthy and dense. One would be lost if he has no basic accounting knowledge. I spent more time looking up other books in the book shop for my revision.

A Heavy Book
It's not that bad as other reviews say it is, but it is definetely such a heavy book to carry around.
