i dont understand. I have not seen the book yet.

After reading W. Sumerset Maugham's 'The Moon and Sixpence' said to have been based on the life of Paul Gauguin, (can someone tell me why that title?), I decided to read a Gauguin's biography just to see exactly what is meant by "Based on the life of..." means. So naturally I went to the library; free. I checked out Howard Green's book: "Paul Gauguin (First Impressions)"; what luck, it was the only one on the shelf. It is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read and the art work reproduction and colors are just glorious and I am now so turned onto Gauguin's painting and just have to have a copy of this book for my own. The book is wonderfully written and portrays Paul Gauguin as not a very pleasant man, as did Maugham. But how do you separate the Man from his art or his body of work; and should you? What drives someone to dedicate his life to painting and abandon his responsibilities, his children? He's dead now and I can love his art and dislike the man; perhaps great art only comes from great suffering. Can't wait till my copy arrives.

This is a fascinating look at a politican best remembered for the $800,000 he left in a shoebox (more or less) in a shabby Springfield hotel room. But Paul Powell was more than that. He was a product of a unique time and place and became a political force that for a time revolved as a "twin-sun" with the Chicago Daley Machine. This book explains how Southern Illinois shaped Powell and how his roots affected his role in Illinois politics. It's also a fascinating look at racetrack politics - a convergence that sent Gov. Otto Kerner to prison. Bob Hartley knows his stuff and has written a very readable account of a very fascinating man.

This 02/03 yearbook, which is designed to keep the biannual Penguin Guide to Classical Music, is similar to its excellent forebears, and even has some improvements. Of particular note is that DVDs are now included with CDs in the ratings rather than being segregated in its own section in back. I would like to see Penguin continue this format when it publishes its 04 guide next year.

This edition of the Bible, Possibility Thinkers Bible, the New King James Version, was made available through the Sunday TV program by Robert Schuller who said that it contained the most beautiful English translation of the Bible available. Dr. Schuller was correct, in my view. This translation is quite beautiful and very easy to read. Previously I had read another translation in English which was frankly quite poorly and unevenly done. This New King James Version, Possibility Thinkers Bible, brought the Bible to life for me in everyday, beautiful English. My thanks go to the translators of the New King James Version. You did a wonderful job for the Lord God/Jesus Christ.
