America Against Itself: Moral Vision and the Public Order

Good commentary on American politics and religion
I am not a big fan of Neuhaus, with his magazine (First Things)'s defense of the Branch Davidians and conservative-reactionary tilt. In this book, though, I found little to disagree with and much to my liking. Neuhaus shows why religion should be integral to American life and does a good take on several key issues like abortion. Father Neuhaus avoids his usual political slant in this book, showing the intelligence and skill he is capable of when detatched (sp?) from his usual ideologue status. I would certainly recommend this book, no matter how much I may disagree with him on other matters.

For anyone who loves the City by the Bay
If, like me, you are a California- or San Francisco-phile, then doubtless you already know of this book. It is THE classic account of the Gold Rush era, mostly because it isn't tarnished by revisionism--it was published in 1855! It has served as the first informational source for both researchers and novelists alike. But this review is intended for those who might not be familiar with the history of California, or may have read only the novels, journalism, or light non-fiction treatments. Don't be put off by the publication date or the book's level of detail--it is a very enjoyable read! The authors were not scholars or historians, but rather a doctor, a lawyer, and a journalist. It is jam-packed with anecdotes and factoids that will make you appreciate even more the accounts of Mark Twain, Joaquin Miller, Ambrose Bierce, Bret Harte, Henry George, etc. It is truly the root of the fruit.

Authentic Transformation: A New Vision of Christ and Culture
Published in Paperback by Abingdon Press (1996)
Authors: John Howard Yoder, Dianne Yeager, and Glen Stassen
Amazon base price: $16.00
Used price: $20.00
Average review score:

A courageous new vision for being the church in the world.
Since 1950, H. Richard Niebuhr's Christ and Culture has set the terms for understanding the relationship of the Church to the wider culture. He delineated five ideal types or stances, but clearly preferred the "transformationist" type. The influence of Niebuhr at this point cannot be overstated as the book was a staple of seminary courses throughout North America, influencing 3 generations of pastors and theologians. The sole dissenting voice for some time was that of Mennonite theologian John Howard Yoder who, in a privately circulated manuscript, contended that Niebuhr mis-discribed the "against" culture type and was guilty of both Trinitarian errors and a mis-use of typology. Now, at last, that inciteful critique is presented in a polished and revised form. However, Authentic Transformation is not simply the published form of Yoder's critique of Niebuhr. It also presents a previously unpublished article by Niebuhr and a partial defense of Niebuhr by Lutheran ethicist Diane Yeager. The book's greatest strength, however, lies in the concluding two chapters by the editor, Baptist ethicist Glen Stassen. In his first chapter, Stassen basically agrees with Yoder's critique of Christ and Culture, but places this work in the larger body of H. Richard Niebuhr's work. In this way, he shows what influences and factors caused HRN to make the mistakes Yoder notices and what features of his larger work could correct those problems. In the concluding chapter, Stassen gives a programmatic statement for what kinds of concrete practices churches would need to embody in order to "authentically transform" the wider culture. In this he draws on insights from Yoder & Yeager, his own original biblical work, and recent sociological studies of effective and ineffective congregations. Although the final chapter was written solely by Stassen, Yoder and Yeager endorse it's conclusions in broad terms. The result is a tour-de-force for Christian ethics: a thorough critical re-thinking of the relationship of Christianity and culture combined with concrete guidelines for implementing authentically transformative practices.

Magnificent account of outrageous religious turmoil.
Chaos abounds between ancient Palestine and Rome in this historic look at early Christianity. Out of desperation due to oppresive Roman rule, Jewish Palestine revolts in a variety of unique ways. The proliferation of bandits is only the first indication of this troubled time. A host of diviners and self-made holy leaders gain following in Palestine as people seek a way out of the horrific situation. This book gives a stunning look at the incredible measures and actions a group will take when their way of life is being destroyed.

Berthold Lubetkin
This monograph has the clarity that characterized the long career of a legendary modernist who left the Soviet Union as a young man and settled in London in the early 1930s. There he designed the celebrated Penguin Pool and other enlightened zoo buildings (animals were more ready to embrace progressive ideas than humans), the controversial Highpoint apartment blocks, a model health center, and some exemplary social housing.

Idealistic and rational, Lubetkin was anything but dourÑthough he was often constrained by meager municipal budgets. Few architects matched his brilliance in turning staircases into spatial adventures, or have used ramps as well as he did for the penguins. And few would have had the wit to respond to public criticism of austerity in the first Highpoint as he did by placing Greek caryatids under the entry canopy of the second block, thus enraging his humorless peers. Lubetkin was one of many brilliant east European ŽmigrŽs who brought civilization to the backward West, and he is aptly celebrated here in a spirited text, a foreword by Richard Meier, and handsome new photographs.
