Psychoneuroimmunology 101.
I have just finished reading Dr. Martin's book and found it fascinating and very well-written. The principle argument or theme is that disease and death seldom have single causes. There is a link between what goes on in the mind, and what goes on in the body. This particular branch of study is known as "psychoneuroimmunology".
Contemporary physicians and scientists frequently dismiss the idea that the mind has any marked effect on physical health. The fact is that most people, doctors and scientists included, find it inherently easier to believe in the reality of apparently simple physical causes of disease (such as cholesterol, salt, smoking, lack of exercise, bacteria or viruses) than to accept that mere thoughts can affect our health. There are extremists on either side of the spectrum; those that claim that the mind/emotions have no influence whatsoever, and the New-Age gurus who believe that adopting certain thinking patterns can prevent cancer!
Dr. Martin's familiarity with well-documented research, authoritative commentary, and overall witty style combine to present a very convincing argument for a middle ground conclusion: that the relationships between mind, body and disease work both ways. The mind affects the body and hence physical health (negatively AND positively). Conversely, physical health affects the mind and hence our thoughts, emotions and behaviour.
Throughout the book, he alludes to examples in literature to illustrate these links between psychological factors and disease. These illustrations help to convey complex scientific ideas in a recognizable form, and I found this feature very innovative and effective... lifting the weight from some very heavy ideas, and making me say, "Of course, I get it now."

There is an extensive discussion of that modern-day source of malady... STRESS. How does "stress" make us more susceptible to breakdown and disease? Interesting sections on the Type A personality (typified by free-floating hostility, aggressiveness, competitiveness, impatience) and how it lends itself to increased risk of heart disease. Also, a section on the Type C personality (typified by suppression of strong emotions, avoidance of conflict, compliance with the wishes of others) and how it lends itself to increased risk of cancer.
The last chapter is marked heavily with Dr. Martin's thoroughgoing support of Darwinism/evolution. I differ with him on several points. But that does not take anything away from the overall value of the book. Fellow creationists be patient.

A fascinating book! Incidentally, my copy is old, and bears the original title, which was "The Sickening Mind".
Read the newer "Healing Mind" and find out for yourself just how appropriate both titles actually are!

I Love This Book!!
This book is fantastic. It is different from any other astrology book I have read. It explains in a very understandable way how the planetary lineup on your date of birth affects your energy exchange and compatiblity with others. Using the information in this book, I have charted compatibility on ex-boyfriends, ex-husbands, couples I know, family members, co-workers, and so far it has been 100% accurate. I will never again enter into a relationship without referring to this book (it takes about 5 minutes to check a persons compatibility). I continue referring to it and I keep it on my coffee table at all times. This book really changed my life, in that it has proven so accurate that if I meet someone on the internet, I ask them their birthdate and automatically know if it is worth continuing the friendship. The only thing missing in the book is that it does not say anything about people born on a cusp. Otherwise, it is excellent, and I know that this is a book that I will use for the rest of my life.

Another "must buy" for the Indy Racing League fan !
The 1998 Indy Review is a nice follow-up to the 1997 version. This book contains photos, highlights and statistics to every race in the 1998 IRL season. I felt the statistics sections were not as complete as the 1997 version, but it was not enough to take away a star. Another great book for Indy fans !

THE BOOK on Wireless
We have been trying to decide on some of the best wireless initiatives for our company for quite some time. This book was incredibly useful in understanding where some of the industry leaders see the future going. I especially liked the chapter written by the CEO of AT&T Wireless. This book is a must have for anyone interest in wireless opportunities or in the wireless industry.

Buber's own words still resonate
This gem is worthy of 100 stars. Bubar's early writings, the work with Gustav Landaur and Franz Rosenweig in synthesizing "Ich und Du", as well as his editorial comments to writers of Der Jude. A true Passover Feast of wisdom and compassion, even including his letter to Gandhi. The forward by Paul Mendes-Flohr serves as an excellant background. As vital today as he was at the birth of the State of Israel.

Applause
I am a Cree pipe carrier and I am so grateful for the gentle flowing words of prayer. Truly a humble man has written such a book of honoring the grandfathers as well as the words of the people whom he met. Kind and wonderous in its bringing together of Aboriginal and Christian beliefs as our path to one creator are meant to be.

This book should sit along side your Devita's CANCER
This comprehensive and complete book is filled with vivid color illustrations and photographs. It provides a basic overview followed by an in-depth, step-by-step approach to surgical resection of tumors of each compartment of the body.It is technical though it reads in a comprehendable manner. I think that this would be a great volume for anyone (from therapist to oncologist)involved in the care/treatment of orthopedic patients or oncology patients with tumors of the musculoskeletal system.

Anyone who has ever had an interest in crime this is the book for you. It is written (and written well) by the two foremost respected criminologists in the UK. It covers everything from the early years of crime detection including Jack the Ripper up until modern day times - with ALOT in between. This book should be on every true crime buff's shelf. An amazing reference book and interesting read.
