The Kabbalists

This is not a "safe" book
The Kabbalists is the author's translation from Ladino of a diary written and left for him 450 years ago by one of his ancestors, a famous mystic who lived in Safed during that city's golden age.

From its opening words to its final, intriguing and spine-chilling "letter to the future" - to the author himself (who died in October, 2001) - this small volume is replete with the quiet, far-seeing wisdom and wonder that only seven decades of hard life and esoteric study can bring.

In short, an understated masterpiece.

The Logic of Real Arguments

Bridging Logical and Real Arguments
The book starts with a beautiful argument from Galileo's Two New Sciences (refuting Aristotelian belief on the influence of gravity on bodies of different weight). This is what makes this book far beyond the ordinary: it contains a wealth of instructive examples about the natural world, about society, about policy, about philosophy, and so on. These are not the usual made-up examples, but REAL ARGUMENTS: ranging from numerous samples of scientific argumentation to some more mundane arguments from newspapers. The author further introduces an informal method for analyzing (extracting and evaluating) arguments as they occur in ordinary language texts. The book not only offers an accessible introduction to critical analysis of theoretical argumentation occurring in informal texts. It is also of interest for logicians who want to have a better understanding of the considerations involved in analyzing unformalized arguments. This amounts, in my opinion, to a successful marriage between the insights from logic and the demands from reasoning patterns as they occur in substantive texts.

The lost world of Agharti : the mystery of Vril power

Perfect Overview Of The Agarthic & Shambalic Underworld
It's been some years since I read the first edition of this remarkable work. The book starts with a strange adventure I don't want to disclose to coming readers, but it surely is an invitation to embarge on a strange and interesting journey through history and underground tunnels. If you're in for suggestions of other civilisations in the past and the here-and-now, living in underground bases and tunnel-systems, eagerly waiting to visit the sunlitten surface again, then this is the book for you. Although MacLellan describe the various tales rather superficially, it surely can be a first invitation to research further into persons like Nicholas Roerich, Bullwer-Lytton, Ossendowski and other adventurers. It surely was an invitation for me...!

Cape Cod Cop: a.k.a. Officer "Crash"
I won't tell you why Alec Wilkinson was given the dubious nickname of "Crash" while he served on the Wellfleet Police force. You'll have to read the book to try and figure that one out! What I can tell you is that Midnights is one of the most amusing true stories I have ever read. It's like a real-life Mayberry.. Barney Fife and all! Originally published in 1982, Wilkinson describes his personal experiences as a small town cop on Cape Cod. Fresh out of college with a music degree, he was looking for work in the summer of '75. Wilkinson gave law enforcement a try. So what if he had no police training! As you will read, it was one bizarre summer and off-season that followed. Memorable too. And Wilkinson candidly recounts his year with the men in blue, often with sidesplitting humor! It's no wonder why this comical gem is back in print.

Personal Mark

A fine actor turns St.Mark into a hit one-man show.
Alec McCowen details his study of The Gospel according to St. Mark in preparation for turning it into his celebrated 1980 one man show. The experienced British actor and veteran of several solo plays takes you step by step through the dramatic sleuthing to find the human story behind the King James language of the original. Life anecdotes illustrate the choices he made to create the show. I came away from the book with an insight into how a fine actor creates a role (and a one-person theatre piece) as well as insights into this gospel.

I feel the book was accurate; children can know the truth
Dear Sharon Denslow: I wish to thank you as the great granddaughter of Nathan Bernard Stubblefield (that's Bernard, not Beverly) I am most greatful that the truth is being told. Though you wrote the book mainly for children, the new breed of kids will at least have a chance to learn the truth of who truly invented the radio, as you know. Your father must have really admired my great grandfather, and I thank him too for teaching you. I hope you will personally read this message too, Ms. Denslow, for I am truly tickled pink. I am going to give some copies to the Stubblefield youngsters in my family. Thank you again.

Bye bye "hello Rainey"

Sincerly, Priscilla Stubblefield
