A beautiful tale of a life well-lived
Sir Alec writes beautifully and simply about the his life through the lives that affected him. Funny, honest, and thought provoking. He's not at all the stereotypical stuffy Englishman, but a regular person with a huge amount of talent and alot of great stories to tell. This book should be back in print!

Wonderful autobiography by a truly gifted, truly modest man
BLESSINGS IN DISGUISE stands out in my reading as one of the most enjoyable autobiographies I've ever encountered. Unlike so many actors, Alec Guinness is a truly modest man, and his wry humor and ability to laugh at himself are extraordinarily refreshing. Guinness is worth reading even if you've never seen one of his movies or plays or television appearances. It is a damn shame that this fine book is apparently out of print.

Outstanding.
This book never ceases to amaze me when I pull it off the shelf for a little inspiration or food for my soul. Chris Giftos is aptly named for he gifts us with this book and his designs. Each arrangement featured suits the area and rooms of the Met as just the right thing for the surroundings. His knowledge of color and combinations of flowers is insightful. Fabulous photos and design aside; it is also an interesting read.

"A Bouquet From The Met" is well worth the price if you are at all interested in floral design, either professionally or as a hobby.

Lila Acheson Wallace was an incredible woman to have allowed New Yorkers the enjoyment of Giftos's flowers at the Met. I can't wait until the day when I can see it all up close.

A wonderful tribute to flowers, architecture & nature itself
An amazing look behind the scenes at the unsung work of a true Master Artist. Thanks to a generous gift from the late Lila Acheson Wallace (Reader's Digest founder), Chris Giftos brings colors and life to an already breathtaking architectural wonder, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The book is full of rich photographs that showcase his talent in different environments. The Temple of Dendrum, The Cloisters, The Great Hall. A wonderful gift for anyone who loves flowers!

A Quick Study of Nineteenth Century Christianity
I'm currently engrossed in reading Victorian history and literature, and purchased this book to get a quick infusion of church history for that period. The book was a perfect choice for my needs. While the book's coverage extends from the French Revolution to the present day, it is mainly concerned with the events of the nineteenth century in Europe, England and Scotland.

Mr. Vidler starts with a discussion of Catholicism in France during the periods of revolution. He delineates the struggle between those favoring strong papal control and those who wanted a more secular society. He moves on to the Oxford movement in Britain where there was a tendency toward revival of Catholic beliefs and liturgy. The Chartist movement and the Christian Socialists were a development of the Industrial Revolution. Marked attempts were made to address the political and financial poverty of many of England's citizens.

The author also covers the split in the Church in Scotland; the impact of Charles Darwin on Christian thinking; the growth of liberal theology and the Catholic modernists; the influence of Kierkegaard; and the impact of imperialistic missionary programs on European and British colonies.

Although written by an Anglican theologian the book is a very even handed treatment of Protestant and Catholic movements and theology during modern times. He presents the good along with the bad, and in sum presents the reader with a concise, informative church history in slightly less than 300 pages. My only caveat is that if you are primarily interested in twentieth century coverage of this topic, then you had best look elsewhere. Coverage of the current period is relatively brief and extends only to 1971, the date of publication.

A Brilliant, Informed Analysis
In a small package, Vidler has written an analysis - - not merely an overview - - of reactions by the Christian Churches to moderrnity and its discontents from the French Revolution to Vatican II. This is a deceptively small book for it is dense, deep, and highly informed. It may even be too concise for the casual reader; I read it with an abundance of other source materials. Figures such as Coleridge, John Henry Newman, and Kierkegaard are portrayed with sympathy. This is essential to any understanding of the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Very practical for commercial products
This book is definitely a strong addition to the body of knowledge for Reliability Professionals and for any Company that wants to improve the business competitiveness by improving the product reliability.

The book clearly provides the correct focus on the customer, but it also elaborates on the fact that one customer is the corporate business enterprise.

The book shows the optimum sequence of DfR activities in the development phases. This book also has impressive details for the specific DfR elements. It is also an excellent resource for guidance into specific details.

I like the balance of graphics with text and the graphics added excellent additional understanding.

This is an outstanding Industry leader that has documented the implemented practice in this book.

I did not attempt to verify every mathematical formula.

Technical Content From Author
As one of the authors/editors of this book, let me describe the valuable technical content. First, let me impress upon you that this is a rare practical work in reliability written by members of a highly technical company that apply reliability science every day to products. Thus, academics are stressed only as a tool. Therefore, this book has something for everyone. It starts off with a management perspective on how to organize a reliability program. Chapter 1 - 5 overview a unique stage-gate approach to growing reliability. What tools and building blocks are needed from a management perspective to be world-class. What tests to perform when is also key. This approach assures optimum reliability grow in a commercial atmosphere of on-time reliable product deliveries. The book then evolves technically providing essential engineering topics. Chapter 6 describes key information for performing process reliability studies. Chapter 7, is without question a compact chapter on failure analysis that describes each analysis tool including SEM, SAM, EDS, FTIR, FIB, SIMS, etc. The numerous physics of failure analysis examples in diffusion, corrosion, intermetallics, ESD etc are illustrated with detailed FA images. Then Chapter 8 provides what you need to know for reliability statistics. It covers basic definitions for failure rate, CDF, PDF, the main distributions used (Weibull, lognormal, Exponential, Normal). A well-organized chapter presenting key essential reliability statistics needed in industry. Chapter 9 details accelerated testing, the primary historical equations governing temperature, temperature-humidity, vibration and temperature cycle/shock, and electromigration. It provides common sense guidelines for assessing overstressing. How to use these equations for test planning. Advance topics including Step-stress and how to describe life distributions as a function of stress. Chapter 10 on Accelerated Reliability Growth is fairly unique. What tests do you perform and when, using stage-gate and recent accelerated reliability growth mathematics for planning. Growth can be obtained and assessed in a timely manner. Chapter 11 provides the essential for system reliability. Series, parallel, and n of k subsystems as well as predicting reliability using both Bellcore, and 217 methods are addressed. Chapter 12 is an excellent overview of FMEA. Chapter 13 teaches methods for evaluating product risk and conducting risk program management. Lastly, Chapter 14 is an advanced topic, thermodynamic reliability engineering. No other book teaches thermodynamics and how the 1st and 2nd laws are fundamental to the science for Physics-of-Failure. In no other book can a reader find derivations for accelerated testing time compression expressions in fatigue, temperature-humidity, Miner's rule, and diffusion. Additionally, an advanced Arrhenius kinetic topics on logarithmic-in-time aging are provided. This topic as a seminar received the highest ratings at the 2001 RAMS conference. Thank You - Alec Feinberg.

Great book - I Know the Author
I read this book when I was a junior at Cornell College, no relation to the Univ, and Jackie Martin was the Prof. At first I did not like the set up of the book at first, yet when I thought about the wide range of readers this book apeals to I enjoyed it more. The side bars are interesting and would be use full in some cases to the adult -- i.e. teacher, or parent -- yet older children who find this book interesting will want to know more and find them most usefull. Also the basic story line will be interesting to younger children and I have used read it seveal times to the first grade children I tutor in Ohio. It is well written and is a perfect book to read when spring come around or for a group project dealing with spring.

A parable of compassion vs. misery
This tiny tome is in actuality a parable of compassion vs. misery, a story of triumph of life and vitality over common desperation. It is an example of how good work that encompasses the light of the sun and the miracle of the seed supersedes the doldrums of disenfranchised lives. The recipients of the gardens thumb their noses at their personal misfortune and rise to find that beauty and joy are possible. The garden givers have brought them that possibility. It is a sound Emersonian lesson for children. And fun to read.

Lear
Although the liner notes describing portions of Act 4 in the boxed set I received were a little amiss, it would be hard to see how the performance itself could be improved. Paul Scofield is absolutely extraordinary as Lear as is Alec McGowen as Glouster and Kenneth Branagh as the Fool. Five stars isn't enough! It's rare that a story like this, which can become quite complex if one isn't familiar with the action, can literally jump off the recording and present us with visual images all along the way. Every actor deserves the highest praise for his/her performance!

Scofield's second recording after 36 years
Is there a need for yet another recording of "King Lear"? If it is a superlative reading, then one would quote "Reason not the need" and accept it for a great addition to a swelling library of complete Shakespeare on recordings. We still have available on Caedmon audio tapes the 1965 "Lear" with Paul Scofield in the title role with Pamela Brown and Rachel Roberts as that particularly nasty pair of sisters, Goneril and Regan. 1988 brought out the BBC Audio Book (Modern Library) with Alec Guiness, Jill Bennett and Eilen Atkins in those roles. In 1994 there was a BBC Radio set with John Gielgud, Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins (again) in those three roles; while a late addition to the Arkangel Complete Shakespeare series gave us Trevor Peacock, Penny Downie and Samantha Bond, Peacock giving a more domestic, less grand reading of the role.

Now Naxos Audiobooks has released on tape and CD yet another version with Paul Scofield again, Harriet Walter (Gonerill, as it is spelled on this set), Sara Kestelman (Regan), Emilia Fox (Cordelia), Peter Blythe (Albany), and Jack Klaff (Cornwall) as the dysfunctional royal family. As the parallel set, we have Alec McCowen (Gloucester), Richard McCabe (Edgar), and Toby Stephens (Edmond).

While Kenneth Branagh played the villainous brother in the Gielgud set, he is assigned the Fool in this production with David Burke (Kent) and Matthew Morgan (Oswald).

The reading in the Caedmon recording is in the grand manner, more poetical than is the most recent; but this Naxos effort seems to move faster, is more dramatic (as should be no surprise) in our sense of the word in that it is more realistic, more "modern" sounding. But I would not dismiss the older set by any means.

I found Scofield less earth-shaking in this production, sounding a little more reasonable and vulnerable than in the earlier one--but after 36 years and under a new director (Howard Sackler in 1965, John Tydeman here), an actor must rethink the role. What I do appreciate is that every word in the storm scene is spoken clearly and not drowned out by the sound effects.

All Drama departments should own both Scofield versions. This Naxos release is available on tape (NA324414) and CD (NA324412). It is also the best buy since Naxos is the supreme budget label.

Captivating, Visceral, and Shocking
I received this book as a birthday gift. I thought @ first it would be another overly dramafied story of a gay man's contraction of AIDS and his long painful death. This book doesn't celebrate his life. It's a graphic, dark novel on a young man's adventure through the an underworld that eventually infected him with HIV. It's honestly graphic, powerful, sexually charged and visceral. It takes your attention. I'm nearly finished and I would recomend this book.

A bracing honesty
Theoretically, this is not the sort of "AIDS novel" I would care to read, following as it does a pattern that has become far too predictable: the chronicle of a gay man's sexual adventures followed by his (inevitable?) contraction of HIV. But this book grabbed me anyway: its clean, straightforward, sometimes graphic style -- espeically in a time when too many gay American novelists have succumbed to fussy literary affectation. It's odd and ironic to find a British author who writes more like an American noir novelist, while his American counterparts are too often trying to write (in the 1990s!) like Henry James. This novel was truly a case of bracing candor and honesty overriding the downbeat subject matter. It deserves to be read as a model as well -- for other writers who want to say what they mean, instead of flit around the edges in some mistaken notion that such flitting is what constitues art. I was saddened to read of Moore's death a few months ago, from AIDS complications -- and to realize that the novel was much more autobiographical than I wanted it to be. His voice was brave and pure. These loses cannot properly be measured. But I for one will miss the other books Moore might have written had he lived. James Robert Bake

Great song book for wide age levels
I thoought the Horn Book review was rough on this delightful picture book. My children have loved it from toddlerhood-- especially because we can "sing" our way through it (and sing over and over if the page turning pace is fast, slow, etc-- it doesn't matter). There is plenty of detail and nostalgia in the careful illustrations-- also a hit with Nana! And it depicts black and white fans side by side, with nods to Jackie Robinson. The end notes are fascinating too. Enjoy!

The illustrations really make the song come to life.
The illustrations is this book are so good that they made me love baseball even more than before. My 2 year old sings the song all of the time now. I wanted to buy the hard cover version after checking it out of the library, but I can't since it's out of print.

A Thorough and Excellent Study
I have been interested in the topic of transnational organized crime for about four years now. Most research on the topic that you will find today concentrates on the more sensational groups like the Russian (Eurasian) groups, the Colombian drug trafficking organizations, and of course the "traditional" OC groups from Sicily and mainland Italy. Very little work has focused exclusively on Asian groups, most especially the Yakuza. Kaplan and Dubro's work helps to fill that gap immensely. Their work is undoubtedly the best material on the Yakuza available. For a more comprehensive look at Asian OC in general, Bertil Lintner's "Blood Brothers" is excellent as well.

Solid revelations
This standard examination of organized crime in Japan is disturbingly accurate and offers solid investigation, told with style and exact attention to detail. At times a bit slow when explaining the maze of interconnections between yakuza and the police, it still manages to deliver a carefully crafted profile of the elusive organization. Kaplan has earned a reputation as a fine writer and here he shows why.
