Biblical, practical, and wise
I have not yet read this entire book, but I did read a chapter excerpted in "Cornerstone Magazine" this month (November, 2000). I have also read several of Backus's other books, such as "The Hidden Rift With God," which was excellent.

The chapter I read was on the sin of sloth. Backus address the psychological, spiritual, and moral dimensions of depression as it relates to the "deadly sin" of sloth. I found it to be balanced, biblical, and historically grounded in that the author refers to spiritual doctors of the church who have addressed matters of sin and righteousness in the Christian life. He also used a case study to illustrate how "telling ourselves the truth" about our situations and God's character leads to spiritual liberation. This is the main theme of Dr. Backus's works over the years.

The book addresses "the seven deadly sins" and how to overcome them in the Christian life. From what I read in the excerpt, and from what I have read before, I'm sure this is a fine book. I plan to get it and read it soon. Maybe I'll give another review then.

The White Architects of Black Education
Mr. Watkins walks us through an historical and turbulent era of education that continues to have ramifications in our present educational system. Watkins journey through the maze of black education exposes the political and socioeconomic influences of the dominnant and affluent white culture of the north. He reveals to the reader the influences of the corporate magnets of the north who wanted cheap labor and subserivent workers. They used their philanthropy and the educational system to imposed their own philosophy of education on the black population;while promoting subserivent lifestyles for those who participated. Mr Watkins is able to convince the reader about the political and economic hold that the corporate world imposes on the black population and the disregard these men had for how the black population wanted their education to progress.
Mr. Watkins continues to show us the need for continued political and socieconomic justice for all people and warns us of the continued influence that corporate America has on all of us.

From a Survivor
William Watkins pointedly and proudly explains how people other than the African Americans have guided the principles of Black education in the United States from the Reconstruction era to post World War II. Whether these people acting philanthropically as John D. Rockefeller or as "evil geniuses" (Chapter 6), they have shaped Black education then and some would argue for all time.

In his writing, Watkins shows that there is a view of the history of American education that does not come from the larger culture. Watkins view is from the "other side of the fence" that is not written by the victors but rather a survivor. This view is equally important as it establishes the fact there are always two sides to every story. "History is made by people in struggle" (p.179).

Generalizations tend to pervade Watkins' writings as the use of the words "few" and "many" are consistent. But this is understandable considering little or no empirical research was being conducted regarding Black education during this time period.

Pointing to the past for blaming is not the purpose of Watkins in his book, but rather an enlightenment of the history presented by a survivor of slavery, segregation and racial inequalities that have existed for generations. Truly, Watkins has offered a view of history in which we can reflect upon and use to help guide a new generation of architects.

White Architects
William H. Watkins writes about the power of education and how it "can be used both to oppress and to liberate." (pg.1) Watkins shares with us how research and science in the last century validated the belief that Whites were the superior race. This belief has played a great role in the development of the school system and curriculum we have today in America. The "White Architects" have used the school system to keep races of people oppressed. He clearly defines who the architects were and the role they played in orchestrating the school system we have today.

I believe that in order to see more success among minority students in schools today we have to restructure the whole school system. Watkins book strengthens my belief. He states "public education was product of historically, politically, and socially constructed ideas." These ideas need to be updated and remade to include all races equally.

Hear This!!
The book was OK, but somehow I was expecting more. I did learn some things to improve my speech, but thought the book would have been nicer with a few more exercises and a little less levity. Easy read -- 1 to 2 nights.

Gut knowledge
You can know "about" something your
entire life, but until you learn it "in
the gut", so to speak, you don't really
know it. It's a light, fast
read, but the message is profound and
will last a lifetime because you will
learn it with your "gut". I still think about and use what I read in this book every day.

Finally a chance to strengthen my voice
I was amazed at how much deeper and stronger my voice sounded, after trying this approach for only a few minutes! I have always had a soft voice, and often had trouble projecting over the background noise in the architecture studios I teach. In spite of wishing for a more effective speaking voice, I don't have time to spend on laborious exercises. The approach presented in this book is easy to understand, and can be done in spare moments, in the shower, etc. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants their voice to sound more professional and confident.

Hard Core: Power, Pleasure, and the "Frenzy of the Visible"

eXXXtremely provocative
I should probably look more closely at the covers of the books that I am ordering online. Any reasonable individual might naturally assume a book entitled "Hard Core" would contain information regarding the apple harvesting industry; however, such is most clearly not the case with Doctor William's book.

Despite the initial mix-up, I found this work to be quite titilating. Prior to reading Hard Core, I was only familiar with pornographic films (or "pornos") as an avid viewer. Hubby Rick and I now devote a significant amount of money and time on pornos in the hopes that we might one day fully appreciate, as does Linda Williams, the pornographic film. And our marriage has never been better!

comprehensive and engaging
i think if there is one book someone reads about pornography, linda williams' hard core is it. she uses a number of theoretical lenses to examine pornography (including marxist theory, foucauldian theory, and feminist theory). her text remains, despite all of the theory she relies on, incredibly read-able and very interesting. williams also traces the history of hard core pornography from stag films to the present and her newly added afterword updates the book and reflects upon hard core's ideas insightfully.

Review of Harcore
This book changed my my mind about I saw pornography. This is a smart and sexy book that dispels many ideas we have about pornography and how the feminist anti-pron rhetoric not only endangers the First Amendment with their calls for taking this protection from porn, but retains the patriarchal concept of female purity that promotes a sexual double standard. This books opens a dialogue and forum for women to talk about pornography. I only wished I hadn't read it ten years earlier, because my copy doesn't have pictures.

Adventures Beyond the Body: How to Experience Out-of-body Travel
Published in Hardcover by Robert Hale Ltd (1997)
Author: William Buhlman
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Useful, broad, and perhaps very lucid
I say "perhaps very lucid" because this is the first book on the subject that I read. I liked Buhlman's scientific approach. Sometimes I didn't like his repetitious writing, but it was useful to ingrain in the reader the new reality that he is being subjected to. The book is very good in that it searches for clear answers to what is happening at each stage of OBE, but it raises a lot of questions as well. It makes you excited about the subject and creates a burning desire to try it for yourself. There are many techniques for obtaining OBEs explained, among them dream conversion, which was useful for me.

Concise and Inspiring
Adventures Beyond the Body is an excellent book for anybody who wishes to obtain information about and/or induce an out of body experience (OBE). For anybody who possesses any inhibitions when it comes to OBEs, there is a FAQ present (along with other sections of the book) that can clear them up.

The first section of this book would be an introduction given by William Buhlman (the author) himself. In the introduction, Buhlman explains how he got involved with OBEs. The details given relate to many people who are either curious about OBEs or disbelieve in them.

The next section of the book would contain segments of a journal William Buhlman kept; documenting is OBEs. The journal entries are one of the most inspiring parts of the book. Anybody who reads the entries would find the details amazing.

After covering the OBE journal, Buhlman goes into scientific information about OBEs. The scientific information about OBEs and the astral world is very concise and interesting.

When the reader reaches the final chapters, he/she will be able to read some methods for inducing OBEs. The methods are split into the categories of: visualization, affirmations, dream conversion (using lucid dreams to leave the body), and hypnosis.

Overall, Adventures Beyond the Body is a great book to read for anybody and it makes an excellent gift for friends and relatives who follow the New Age, which is why I give it five stars.

One Of The Best!!!
While I admire the writings of Robert Monroe immensely I have to admit that he may be a little confusing for beginners, who may not fully understand or appreciate his terminology, or find it a bit dry. Not so with William Buhlman's book, which details not only his fascinating experiences but does something that no other book I've ever read on this subject has done, which is to explain this incredible experience scientifically by drawing comparisons to quantum physics. At first I thought this would be confusing, and perhaps a bit boring, but to my surprise I found it not only insightful, but downright fascinating. Buhlman has a great talent for taking a difficult and hard-to-understand topic and bringing it down to earth.

In my opnion, not only the best INSTRUCTIONAL book on the subject, but the best BOOK on the subject. Period!

bogus reviews
Wow ! Every review for every book written by this woman awards five stars. Classic literature doesn't even score that well. This phony should be a little smarter. All of this is coming from a non-competitive "martial art" school that tests four times a year. Spiritual values cost a lot !

The number one choice
This is my favorite book of all I have read. I stumbeled over it beeing an exchangestudent in the USA. It give you great insight to life and encourages everyone to be all they can be and enjoy life. A better book I don't know if it exists. If your in to life or not this is one great way to go ! Love, live, prosper as one as in you and as one as human beings as a whole Enjoy life !

Practical Methods to Improve Your Life
This is an outstanding book due to Ms. Kim's practical view of our lives and how we can achieve our own success in the 20th century. She presents her ideas in a very straightforward manner, yet, she leaves one with the freedom to apply her ideas to our own lives. I was very impressed at the simplicity of the tools she proposes we use. In the section on purity she tells us that if we are feeling down a very useful tool is to ask ourselves what would make us happy. This process is so basic it has helped me to lower my stress by allowing me to focus on what I wanted instead of feeling that I was the victim of something uncontrollable. Grandmaster Kim is one of those very special authors who has the capability to help us influence our own lives. 7 Steps to Inner Power is a powerful book that I will be passing out at our next Manager's meeting.

Many Thanks
Many Thanks for sharing these insightful morsels of information.

A real eye-opener
It was refreshing to read a book that is so honest and so revealing about the current situation women find themselves in today in corporate america. The statistical breakdown of women in power was shocking.

The insights and strategies the book lays out have already begun to work for me in my career. Thank you...

Business Week calls it right
This book is truly "well-written and engaging" and "big-picture focus(ed)" as described by Toddi Gutner in her article in Business Week. Her review of the book peaked my interest and I found What Every Successful Woman Knows every bit as insightful as she stated. However, I believe that the suggestions offered, rather than being time consuming, are a challenge that will help me focus and, in the end, free up my schedule.

Every business that needs to express their identity needs to own this book. Not educating yourself on the nuances of logo design could break your company.

Best book on the topic; a MUST for any business or organizat

Software code
This book is famous even when I was in college in 78. But technology changed in the area of computations. One area that this book is poor is that it does not have software code to test the algorithms. As a student or professional, you do not just compute using calculators. You need to test it with a program. It will help a student a lot if there are sample code in C to test around and checks one's calculations.

You must have it in your liberary
If you are interested in the electrical theory behind generation, transmission, power flow analysis, and small system stability analysis should get this book. We have studied it in Egypt and i found it also the textbook in most of Canadian universities...

Power System Analysis by Grainger & Stevenson
This is a thoroughly revised version of the classical Power System Analysis text by the late Professor Stevenson. The new author, Professor Grainger, has made every effort to retain the flavor and clarity of the original text material. The text covers all classical power system material starting with: basic concepts, transformers, transmission line parameters & performance, network models, power flow solutions, 3-phase faults, symmetrical components and applications, economic operation and power system stability. Two brand new and highly readable chapters on contingency analysis and state estimation add value to the usefulness of this text. A superb solution manual is available for instructors. This text is admirably suited to power system analysis courses at senior undergraduate level and graduate level.

We, at the University of Calgary, have adopted this as the text for the 4th year power system course ENEL 587.
