Mr. Watkins continues to show us the need for continued political and socieconomic justice for all people and warns us of the continued influence that corporate America has on all of us.
In his writing, Watkins shows that there is a view of the history of American education that does not come from the larger culture. Watkins view is from the "other side of the fence" that is not written by the victors but rather a survivor. This view is equally important as it establishes the fact there are always two sides to every story. "History is made by people in struggle" (p.179).
Generalizations tend to pervade Watkins' writings as the use of the words "few" and "many" are consistent. But this is understandable considering little or no empirical research was being conducted regarding Black education during this time period.
Pointing to the past for blaming is not the purpose of Watkins in his book, but rather an enlightenment of the history presented by a survivor of slavery, segregation and racial inequalities that have existed for generations. Truly, Watkins has offered a view of history in which we can reflect upon and use to help guide a new generation of architects.
I believe that in order to see more success among minority students in schools today we have to restructure the whole school system. Watkins book strengthens my belief. He states "public education was product of historically, politically, and socially constructed ideas." These ideas need to be updated and remade to include all races equally.

entire life, but until you learn it "in
the gut", so to speak, you don't really
know it. It's a light, fast
read, but the message is profound and
will last a lifetime because you will
learn it with your "gut". I still think about and use what I read in this book every day.

Despite the initial mix-up, I found this work to be quite titilating. Prior to reading Hard Core, I was only familiar with pornographic films (or "pornos") as an avid viewer. Hubby Rick and I now devote a significant amount of money and time on pornos in the hopes that we might one day fully appreciate, as does Linda Williams, the pornographic film. And our marriage has never been better!
The first section of this book would be an introduction given by William Buhlman (the author) himself. In the introduction, Buhlman explains how he got involved with OBEs. The details given relate to many people who are either curious about OBEs or disbelieve in them.
The next section of the book would contain segments of a journal William Buhlman kept; documenting is OBEs. The journal entries are one of the most inspiring parts of the book. Anybody who reads the entries would find the details amazing.
After covering the OBE journal, Buhlman goes into scientific information about OBEs. The scientific information about OBEs and the astral world is very concise and interesting.
When the reader reaches the final chapters, he/she will be able to read some methods for inducing OBEs. The methods are split into the categories of: visualization, affirmations, dream conversion (using lucid dreams to leave the body), and hypnosis.
Overall, Adventures Beyond the Body is a great book to read for anybody and it makes an excellent gift for friends and relatives who follow the New Age, which is why I give it five stars.
In my opnion, not only the best INSTRUCTIONAL book on the subject, but the best BOOK on the subject. Period!

We, at the University of Calgary, have adopted this as the text for the 4th year power system course ENEL 587.
The chapter I read was on the sin of sloth. Backus address the psychological, spiritual, and moral dimensions of depression as it relates to the "deadly sin" of sloth. I found it to be balanced, biblical, and historically grounded in that the author refers to spiritual doctors of the church who have addressed matters of sin and righteousness in the Christian life. He also used a case study to illustrate how "telling ourselves the truth" about our situations and God's character leads to spiritual liberation. This is the main theme of Dr. Backus's works over the years.
The book addresses "the seven deadly sins" and how to overcome them in the Christian life. From what I read in the excerpt, and from what I have read before, I'm sure this is a fine book. I plan to get it and read it soon. Maybe I'll give another review then.
