A deeply penetrating psychological account
Dr. Clark has struck a sensitive nerve in the consciousness of a nation in his 1965 study of black neighborhoods. Revised in 1989 with an introduction by William Julius Wilson, and a foreword by Gunnar Myrdal, it is apparent that other scholars respect Clark's work as well. I was particularly impressed by the self-honesty of his methodology -- he calls it his "involved observer" method, which shows much more concern for the subjects of the study than traditional "disinterested observer" approaches, espoused by so-called "value-free" social scientists. Also recommended are other books by Clark, and most anything by Cornel West, Lewis R. Gordon, Allen Spear, and Alex Kotlowitz. A related book to "Dark Ghetto" is "Racism & Psychiatry," by Alexander Thomas and Samuel Sillen, with an introduction by K. Clark.

Energy and the Making of Modern California
As many observers have pointed out, California surpasses many of the world's nations in the size and scope of its economy. A crucial element of California's economic growth has been its production and use of a variety of energy sources. Energy and the Making of Modern California provides us with the definitive study of the pivotal role played by energy in the history of the Golden State. The book provides a comprehensive narrative of the history of energy in California, along with an analysis of the economic, political, and cultural forces that have driven it. As with many aspects of California history, energy production and use has departed substantially from patterns established in other parts of the United States, and the reasons for this divergent path constitutes on of the key themes of the book. Energy and the Making of Modern California is clearly written, and filled with fascinating details like the rise and fall of solar water heating in the early 20th century, the re-emergence of wind power in the 1970s, and the development of oil as a fuel for steam locomotives in the late 19th century. Abundantly supplied with maps, graphs, charts, tables, and photographs, this book will be of interest to anyone interested in energy, the environment, or the history of California.

Watch for the Fly in the Anointing ! (p48)
Bill DeArteaga's latest book is his most enjoyable to date. In a comfortable narrative supported by copious endnotes he reviews the ebb and flow of revival in history, making a persuasive case that the spiritual results of revival are likely to be both richer and more enduring when sacramental content, especially Holy Communion, is included. The point is illustrated by detailed descriptions of the Scottish communion cycles, echoed on this side of the Atlantic by the Great Awakenings . In modern times the altar call seems to have displaced the Lord's Supper in revival, which marginalizes the sacramental dimension of faith for new Christians.

The book is full of historical minutiae and portraits of some of our more colorful past preachers. The mid-eighteenth century comes alive with the likes of William "Mad" Grimshaw of Haworth, England, contemporary of the Wesley brothers, whose church experienced such growth that he devised a scaffold at a window so that preaching could be heard not only by a thousand people inside, but two thousand more in the courtyard outside. The account of a famous sermon by George Whitefield at this church and the effect that it had on the multitude that came to hear him preach is worth the price of the book.

Forgotten Power is entertaining, but a more serious thrust of the book is to prod the reader to imagine ways that the twenty-first century revival (the Third Great Awakening) will benefit by becoming more intentionally sacramental. Mass communication is accelerating the pace of the spread of the Great Commission, but absent the nurturing that derives from sacramental practices today's Christianity promises to become a river that may be miles wide but inches in depth. This book suggests ways to prevent such a dilution of our faith.

Freedom From Stress
As a school Guidance Officer and Counsellor, I have found this book invaluable. It is based on Perceptual Control Theory and shares many similarities to the work of William Glasser and his Choice Theory, although the two authors would probably dispute this. It is particularly relevant for Guidance Officers whose schools have introduced "the Responsible Thinking Classroom" as part of their behaviour management policy. For a counsellor, Ed goes much deeper than a discussion of Perceptual Control Theory. Ed describes valuable techniques he uses in counselling and relates them to his understanding of why we humans do what we do. My only complaint is that I want a follow up book on counselling from Ed but can't seem to find one. I suspect that like many authors of the really great counselling books, Ed is more involved with the practical counselling side of things and simply hasn't had the time to write another book since this one. His style of writing is easy to read and it is one of those books that can be read time and again and each time more is learnt. This book contains much more about human behaviour than a study of stress. If Ed is still around, I hope he reads this review and writes another book on his techniqes of counselling and human behaviour.

A Biblical and Balanced Approach to the Topic
This book provides a biblical and balanced approach to an otherwise misunderstood and controversial topic: the healing power of the human mind. Dr. Backus is aware of the misunderstandings, especially among Christians, that cloud the issue so he renders due cautions and clarifications during his exposition. Although he believes that miracles and instant healings through prayer do happen today, he distinguishes between a supernatural healing (a miracle) which is entirely an act of God and the natural process of healing which involves our cooperating with God to create a healthy inner life based upon truth, especially and ultimately God's truth revealed in the Bible. He disagrees with those Christians who think that God always wills the healing of our bodies here on earth and think that healing always happens if the person praying has 'enough faith' (pg. 110). These same Christians usually 'see God's promise to preserve the health of his people, as recorded in Exodus and Deuteronomy, as a pledge to perform miracles routinely' and 'think that by 'claiming' these promises they can unleash miracle-power as if by magic from heaven' (pg. 51). Instead, Dr. Backus believes that 'the Exodus and Deuteronomy promises assume that God's people will live in a relaxed state of trust - a state of inner peace and rest and obedience' (pgs. 51 - 52).

Dr. Backus also distinguishes between spiritually unhealthy false religions (including New Age and Mind Science cults) and the scientific (and Biblical!) fact that 'your health and your healing can be made better or worse by what you do with your mind' (pg. 63). Regarding 'positive thinking,' he asserts: 'If you must choose between a positive thought and a true thought, always choose what is true.' He adds: 'Sometimes truth has a negative effect - angering us, causing grief, frightening us. But the whole truth transforms those negatives into positives, because God turns evil into good. When you tell yourself the whole truth you don't deny pain or illness, you defeat it' (pg. 129). He gives examples of 'illicit positive thinking' that deny reality and also gives examples of confronting negative reality with positive culmination (the 'whole' biblical truth) that brings hope and can contribute to one's physical healing. Dr. Backus clearly points out that 'most diseases do not result from a single causal factor' and that 'even so-called 'terminal' illnesses are not, in themselves, sufficient to cause death. Nutrition, exercise, and rest make a significant difference, as does a sense of belonging to a group of other people' (pg. 53). Also, renewing our minds with Christian truth as taught in the Bible promotes healing; hence, the title of the book: The Healing Power of a CHRISTIAN Mind.

Although many of the health principles expounded in this book are natural and supported by scripture, Dr. Backus also promotes prayer and the possibility of supernatural healing from God. I highly recommend this book. It is practical, easy to read, and lifts one's spirit with the biblical hope that grounds the Christian gospel.

Human Be-ing
This book is simple in it's presentation however very deep in it's meaning. The impact this book has made for me is very signficant. By using the simple guidelines the author suggests I have found I can better listen and understand people. When confronted it is easy for me to become defensive. As the author suggests, now I try and listen to the person's feelings and the deeper message they are sharing.

The power of the techniques when done with sincerity and guinuiness as the author suggests are, not then just new "techniques" they become a way to connect....on a deeper level. I find that I am able to quickly connect with others and in my fast pasted lifestyle, I find the skills presented in the book to be very helpful.

I have found that is not only helpful in my interpersonal relationships yet in my business/sales and negotiating responsiblities at work. Often by using the skills articulated in the book, I hear others now saying to me, " you really understand" or "that's exactly what I am saying".

It is a nice feeling to have someone say, " I have never told anyone this but....." As Dr. Pietsch says, Love is listening. Being willing to shut up, slow down, and reflect the deeper message communicated is easy to say to do...but hard to really do. When I really do what he instructs, both parties I find are winners. I like the feeling of being known as someone who cares, and obviously this is helpful for family, friendships and my business relationships.

This book I think is useful for all ages to learn. My children are developing these skills and when they use them with me, I smile inside knowing they will be more successful in the world they are about to enter when they one day leave home.

It may sound corny, but it is one of the best books out there, coulda, shoulda been a best seller...maybe on Amazon.com it will now reach and be able to help others as it has me. Thanks for allowing me to review this book.
