Horrible!
I took POLS 132 (International Relations) and my professor was John Rourke, the author of the book. He knows his stuff (he writes a new edition every year), but his lectures were horrible! Half of the students in lecture would never go, and the students who did attend class only went because he took attendence. He cannot teach. He rambles on and on in lecture and is frequently off-topic. This is reflected in his writing. Having the textbook as our only source was hard enough, not to mention having him as the professor for our class! Just save your time and money--stay away from this book. (And if you're a UConn student, don't take his classes.)

An Awful Text
One of my classmates for our Poli Sci 100 Intro to World Politics class put it best, "...it's clearly biased and I don't learn anything from it." He was right, find another book or a class to take, but don't read this text. If this is your textbook hopefully your teacher can lecture well, because this textbook teaches nothing at all.

Very broad ... but very biased!
Good book for an introduction to International Relations couse in terms of topics covered - but the author's bias is clearly leaning toward that of an idealist/globalist. Make sure you get a balanced perspective from the other side of the coin before taking this text as gospel.

Robespierre (Profiles in Power (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by Longman (1999)
Author: John Hardman
Amazon base price: $78.95
Used price: $55.00
Average review score:

Do not buy it
This book is difficult to read and waste of money. If you are interested in Robespierre go the great book "Revolutionary Career of Robespierre".

Disappointing
For a recent book about Robespierre, this work is not only disappointing, but terribly antiquated. One reason is because it relies on a discredited source, John Wilson Croker's 1835 essay on Robespierre, an error-filled and venomous document that is given little standing by modern day scholars of repute. If you wish to earn about Robespierre, you should first turn to David P. Jordan's Revolutionary Career of Maximilien Robespierre, then to Norman Hampson, J.M. Thompson, G. Rude and Max Gallo. I have read over 30 books in English and French on Robespierre, and those are the best, most informative and most balanced. Hardman's work, on the other hand, is a tired, hostile rehashing that relies too heaviy on Croker. Pass on this one.

Simplified Design of Switching Power Supplies
Published in Hardcover by Butterworth-Heinemann (15 January, 1995)
Author: John D. Lenk
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $15.88
Average review score:

LAME!
I bought this book to learn about switching power supplies. The types are not dicussed. The formulas given to calculate inductor values generate results that contradict each other and don't make sense. Reads like a poorly written application note.

Stay Away From This Book!
I have many books on this subject. This is by far the worst. It is more like a compilation of manufacturer's application notes for their ICs than a text book. He doesn't even cover off-line switchers!

Civic Discourse, Civil Society, and Chinese Communities:
Published in Paperback by Ablex Publishing (10 November, 1999)
Authors: Randy Kluver and John H. Powers
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

This book [was bad]!
I don't know what Kluver and Powers were thinking, but it was obvious that they have never even VISITED china, or spent any time around real Chinese people. If they have been to China, it only shows that they are totally ignorant of the topic at hand. This book is another in a long line by small minded, western biased, anglo-loving nerds. In addition to that, there were numerous typos and errors in the book. Too many to begin to list here, but page 116 contained one of the BIGGEST blunders I have ever seen. Unless a professor forces you to buy this book, stay far, far away from it, because you can learn more about this topic on MTV than in this book.

Insulting and demeaning
The term "mohammedan" is insulting to Muslims. If the author did not recognise this fact, he must be an old school bigot still fighting the Crusades.

This is not a book
Um, this is not a book. It's a survey put out by a Hollywood trade paper. And the guy is not an "author." He just got a bunch of research together and put some fancy drawings on the cover.

Milwaukee Road Steam Power

Just roster shots.
No real insight into the use or technology of steam power on this railroad. It is just a collection of roster shots that can be obtained is less expensive books.

A Horrible book that's well written
The author is too self absorbed and never succeeds in his quest to find the "true south" because he can't see beyond his own limited view.
