Highly recommneded. The author simplified complex matters and lays it down in simple terminology. Should be a text book for Management courses. I have read many books on how the brain works and the science behind living a daily normal life, but this book sort of cracks the code to our individual wiring.

I purchased Fielder's Choice for my son and to reach the minimum dollar amount on my [Amazon.com] order to get free shipping. Just by chance, I picked it up for a quick browse and to my surprise, didn't put the book down until I finished reading it. This is basiclly a story about about a boy coming of age,growing into manhood, told through the background of baseball and war. Fielder's Choice is a warm hearted story full of both laughs and tears. The main character, Gooseball Fielder is the persona of Forrest Gump in baseball flannels discovering that life throws the hardest curves .

Rick Norman is a great story teller. He constructed the book in such a fashion, that after finishing it, I needed to check baseball references to see if the story of Gooseball Fielder was true.

I`ve read a book called Fielders Coice and it is the
best book i`ve read so far.It is an interesting book
to read for the ones you like sports.You will enjoy it about midway through the book where he lost a game and quit to go to the war.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. Rick Norman's use of comedy and tradegy really set this book apart from others. I would reccomend this book to anyone. I even wrote about it in my column in the local newspaper. I just wish there was a sequel. I think that if you read any book at all, this one will surpass it by far.

My 5-year-old loves this book. He enjoys pointing to each thing and saying what it is. He also loves the sillyness. The grouping of objects in categories helps children conceptualize how things are similar and different.

This is one of the best books to trigger people's knowledge of how to learn on their own, and where learning is. More than showing what IS in the museum, Grover shows us that the museum is an artificial, tiny part of the whole wide world, and that we can step out into the sunlight. I had mentioned this book months ago and am glad to see it's still in print, still available to make the lights go on in the minds of children and their parents! ... I whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone teaching a child at home!

This is one of the best, funniest books we own that my daughter and I BOTH enjoy. There are plenty of objects for her to learn and it is great entertainment reading a book with the charming, loveable Grover in it and laughing at all of his antics! Hello Fern, Thanks for giving me an autographed copy of this book. I lost my dear sister who was like a twin to me about 2 years ago and you have helped me to come to grips such lost and emptiness in my life. Granted, I have a husband and 3 children (one is her son that we adopted after her death) but there is still a undescribed lonliness that I feel.

I read a couple of chapters a night and savor in depth of this book. I've also learned that it's okay to write a letter to my sister or keep a journal instead of keeping everything inside. And, most importantly, you do not say that I will get over it or "just go on with life." Thank you so much for understanding and for letting me know that the way I feel about the death of my loved one is quite ok afterall. And it's ok to cry or get angry or to write to her. Fern, you're a gem. And that Normy must've have been such a wonderful man. I like him and have never even met him before. Can you explain this? (smile)

I am a single man and did not read this book because I lost a spouse (though I have given it to others who have). I read it because it is simply magnificent. It touches on the human condition of loss and tells us a story of love and laughter, shares a life, a relationship,and leaves us with the distinct feeling that we are better off for having read it. It's simplicity is it's beauty, and Field, who is courageous and so appealing in her story, must be a wonderful woman. Just a beautiful little book to help us deal with our difficult life journeys. Bravo!

Great reading for anyone who has lost a loved one to death. Fern has an uncanny ability to project the emotions of a lifetime of love through the written word, as well as the pain of grief. This book will help anyone, in particular those who are widowed, to walk through the anguish of grief. Absolutely a "must read" for the widowed.

I picked up this book only because I was so bowled over by a writing book by one of the coauthors, Tami D. Cowden. I've read mystery short stories for years, but had never really seen a collection of truly short romance stories before - most of those are novellas.

But this unique collection does not contain novellas - these are nice punchy short stories just like I find in mystery anthologies. You'll be amazed at the characterization the authors manage to pack into so few words - the very brevity makes each story so much more powerful.

The stories themselves are quite varied. A few brought tears to my eyes, while others had me laughing out loud. Each one truly different from the other. The only things they have in common are the very satisfying happy endings!

I recommend this books as something off the beaten path. But frankly, I hope to see a lot more books like this in the future!

Traditionally history book wars begin with a declaration and end with a treaty. In families the effects of war extend through generations. Steinman's treatment of the discovery of her father's "souvenir" from World War Two is a story of how an entire family was shaped by the silence of an experience her father couldn't talk about. It is a fresh and original treatment of the impact of war, one that we as a nation are only recently coming to grips with. It is also extremely relevant to understanding today's climate of global public opinion against America's declaration of preemptive war in Iraq, particularly in Europe where many people believe that war is no longer a viable instrument of "politics by other means."

A very good emotional book about World War II. Steinman's father served in the Tropic Lightning Division of the U.S. Army fighting in northern Luzon (P.I.). Even though her father is not a casualty, he suffers the rest of his life from the effects of the war. He is hard and somewhat bitter. After his passing, Louise finds the souvenir of the war---a personal flag from a Japanese soldier. She examines the brutality of the war from both the American and Japanese perspective (Hiroshima, Nanking, P. I, Bataan). She finds the family of the soldier and returns the flag. She finds that the Japanese soldier has a human face after all.
This is a good emotional read of the effects of war, even if the war was the good war.

I couldn't put this book down. As a veteran of the Viet Nam era, I don't like stories of war that glorify nationalism. This book artfully humanizes the overly simplistic categorization of "good" and "evil." This book should be required reading for every high school student, especially of history or political science. If you have a son or daughter, you owe it to them to buy this book for their education that isn't taught in school. It is a graduation present that could help them change the world.

I just finished reading My Carrier War by Norman E.Berg. It is an absorbing and interesting page-turner. Mr. Berg's memories of his WW II experience offer a gripping picture of what it took to be a naval pilot in 1941 and beyond, as well as the human story of a young husband and father who faced combat as leader and participant.

This account offers an in-depth variety of information and illumination, regardless of the interest of any particular reader. It's about learning to fly, about learning to be a naval pilot, about the characteristics of warplanes, about flying from an aircraft carrier, about life at sea, about falling in love, about making a personal life in the midst of war, about separation from your loved ones, about dropping torpedos and divebombing, about comradship, about U.S. strategy in winning the south pacific, and about humanity in a time of war.

Beyond the details, this writer knits the story together in an engaging way. There is no tedium in this book, nor is it a superficial recitation of dry history. It offers a timeless lesson in facing personal challenges and prevailing. The book is interestingly illustrated with photographs and maps. It is a satisfying read.

This chronicle is a rich tapestry of war time action woven against a background of a boy's transformation into manhood through duty, love, and acceptance of personal limitations. Norman Berg brings his combat missions alive with gripping vividness of detail. But it is the comparatively economical passges on his subjective experiences that give this book its poignancy. Staying the course in war and sixty years of reflection have added the tincture of a profound sense of fate to this writer's ink. It makes this memoir shine.

I couldn't put it down. As someone who was born after WWII, I was able to appreciate better the time period where we all went through this difficult period. May we never have to do that again. Thank you Mr. Berg for a well written book and am looking forward to seeing it in movie form.

The wonderful Norman Cohn has created an interesting and important book examining revolutionary messianism in medieval and Reformation Europe. It was not quite as good as Norman Cohn's Europe's Inner Demons (a very high benchmark, indeed) but it posesses the same potent ability to chart accurately and interestely a trend from the past in its own historical context and then to demonstrate to the reader the ways in which this knowledge is important for an understanding within our own historical period. He cleanly takes the reader through the various millenial movements in a way that is both entertaining, informative, and, best of all, understandable. The adept mind of an historian blended with the skill of a writer. A good book.

The apocalyptic imagination has always exercised great control over the mind of the Western man - from bands of Jewish zealots in the time of Josephus to the masses of poor warriors in the Crusades to take the Holy Land for Christendom to the mutual hurling of the epithet "Antichrist" between Luther and the Pope, and it has been keenly expressed in the Biblical tradition within the Books of Daniel and Revelations. _The Pursuit of the Millennium_ takes a look at the mass movements and delusions that developed out of this tradition in the Middle Ages and the period following the Middle Ages, the Reformation. Norman Cohn shows how prejudices and hatreds among the poor (especially against the Jews, the clergy, and the wealthy) were used by mystical prophetae in conjunction with the apocalyptic tradition to give rise to mass movements which resulted in much mayhem and bloodshed. For example, the People's and Shepherd's Crusades in the Middle Ages were movements of mindless zealotry which ended in mass slaughter. Cohn examines various sects that developed out of these apocalyptic traditions around such figures as the Emperor Frederick, Joachim of Fiore, and various other individuals and imposters who sought to mobilize the masses of poor. In the later Middle Ages, this type of movement was exemplified among the flagellants, the Brethren of the Free Spirit, Taborites and followers of Thomas Muntzer, the militant wing of the Anabaptists, and later the Ranters in England. Often, these movements incorporated Joachimite speculations about a coming Age of the Spirit, mystical doctrines that made one was free to sin as one pleased (Free Spirit), and communistic ideals that involved belief in a Golden Age in which all men had lived as brothers with all things in common. Class struggle between rich and poor, or between poor and clergy (who were often contaminated by the sins of Avaritia and Luxuria) developed into all out wars. The belief that the apostles had lived in poverty and that God had intended all men to live in a communistic setting gave impetus to many individuals to reject church orthodoxy and form their own apocalyptic movements. These movements depended on the poor who held steadfastly to their often megalomanical leaders in their pursuit of messianic ideals and the coming of the millennium. Cohn does an excellent job of describing this process in detail and deals with much of the mysticism and myth surrounding it.

In the modern era, it is apparent that millenarian zeal has not died off at all. The communist revolutions in Russia and the rise of the Third Reich in Germany were both movements in the same line as these earlier mass movements in the Middle Ages. While they have shed much of the apocalyptic myth and become atheistic, the same principles were involved in their formation, and in the formation of similar movements that continue in the world today.

A friend recommended this to me as 'a great read' and I also recommend it to you for the same reason. It is rare that a work can be appreciated for its academic value, and for pure fascination. Who could not but be fascinated by the medieval flagellants, the Taborites, Joachim of Fiore, the Tafurs, the Anabaptists and the Ranters. Some groups awaited the returned of the Emperor Constantine, or Frederick Barbarossa, or even the Duke of Flanders, to herald the last days. Other preached, and practised, Free Love, and community of goods. Startingly, the Anabaptists of Munster (Germany) withstood a lengthy siege for their beliefs, while what was happening inside the walls of the city seemed to prefigure the regime of Stalin. Important to recall the limitations of medieval Catholicism, which drove many into fringe sects, and eventually helped spawn the Reformation. Not that the Protestant princes were any more sympathetic to the Prophets of the Poor. For an academic book, this is also fun to read, though its subject in places in quite grisly.

Well, okay, maybe you would place in on the coffee table if your book shelves aren't high enough, but this is a practical book. "American Art Tile" covers the period from 1876-1941. Why does it stop in 1941? Because sadly, many tile making firms shut down for WWII and never reopened.

The book shows photographs of hundreds of tiles made by more than 100 American firms (probably every one Mr. Karlson could identify). Included are the Dedham Pottery in Dedham Massachusetts with it's famous blue and white scenes of rabbits running around the edge of the tile; the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown, Pennsylvania with it's fantastic Eastern European images; The Weller Pottery in Zanesville Ohio with it's "Sicardo" works; Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati, Ohio which produced the matte glazed architectural tile used in the New York Subway system such as Fulton's Steamboat at the Fulton Street Station; and the wonderful Pewabic Pottery in Detroit Michigan from the Chippawa word for copper colored clay.

These tiles are not all individually labled, so if you're trying to identify a particular item, the book will provide only limited information. On the other hand, it will probably help you determine the origin of the manufacturing company, if not the name of the specific design. According to Karlson, many of the companies are out of business, so this may be as good as it gets since catalogues are impossible to obtain.

Mr. Karlson includes many photographs of individual tiles, but few are show 'in situ' so the pages can become overwhelming in their detail. However, the book is probably destined to be something antique tile dealers keep in their reference desk. If you're a serious tile collector or fancier, you will probably find the book worth the cost.

Superb photos and beautifully written and researched text make this a must for any serious collector of American Art Tiles! Karlson pushes the information envelope with regard to many American tile artisans. For example, he includes a photograph of perhaps the only known example of a glazed Matt Morgan art tile. If you are a serious Art Tile collector this book should be in your library!

This bountiful volume conatains gorgeous photos and detailed information on tile manufacturers from the turn of the century to WWII. Some famous ones, and a lot of obscure ones that I was thrilled to learn about. Besides being pleasing to the eye, it really did broaden my understanding of the different tile manufacturers and the influences that shaped the work and heritage. I rarely spend this much on a book, but I found it to be well worth the money.

I have the pleasure to be taking professor Nise's control systems engineering class at Cal Poly Pomona. I have to say that this is an excellent book for control systems. there is a lot of material that is covered by this book. the examples are well presented and they really help you when working on the problems at the end of each chapter. Another plus is the powerpoint slides and the matlab supplementary material included in the CD-ROM. there are nice tutorials on MATLAB and Simulink. this is a definite must have. Highly recommended

This book is excellent!!. It is well presented and easy to understand. It did not assume that the reader knows the basic and explains the essence that is needed to follow through the subject. Control System is a subject that I had problem grasping while doing my undergraduates because I was thrown with all the mathematical formulas and left to make sense out of them. In short I did not learn much from school. Control system was a dark side for me until I discovered this book. Now I understand more than before and I am read it like a story book. This book made me helped so much that I am compelled to write this review. I wish I had this book earlier. This is the kind of book that I have been searching for all this while

This is the best book explaining Matlab in control engineering. With this book and "The Student Edition of Simulink" you can do any simulations in control engineering. A must.
