very concise and complete. Lot's of good info.
Norman Strung knows just what to write when it comes to this kind of stuff. He recommends equipment, strategies, techniques, and various useful facts for hunting everything from waterfowl, to big game, to small game, to upland game. Nice photography. Also talks about how to find and track game. Touches on weapon basics, how to zero rifles, techniques for shotgunning. This book has everything.

Wonderful!!!!!
I purchased this book for my 13 year old son. He has just begun to enjoy hunting and this book has been a valuable asset to him. It covers a wide variety of wildlife, equipment, and skills. He has used this book over and over for reference as well as reading enjoyment. I highly recommend it for all ages for its informative content, as well as its breathtaking wildlife pictures.

Masterfully put together, brief but exact.
This is by far the best all around hunting book I have ever read. The pictures, explanations, and amount of species covered are incredible. Mr. Strung addresses all the types of weapons as well as the animals you hunt them with. I liked it so much I bought copies for all the guys I go into the woods with. This book has every type of animal you could possibly want information on. The beautiful cover and photography on the inside are some of the best I've seen. I put this as a definite 10 on my list and would recommend it to hunters of any age and experience.

Great book on the benefits of staying home with your kids
The book go on saying how important for a child to have a constistant caregiver. Not only that but how important it is for parents to spend time with their kids.

The TRUTH about "quality time"
Thank you, Dr. Fox, for finally being courageous enough to expose the myth of "quality time." For so long, researchers and physicians have known that attachment parenting is the ideal situation for infants and children, but, haven't disseminated this information in the mainstream. Dr. Fox recognizes the reality that for some parents, e.g. single parents or the working poor, working is a necessity. But for many millions of parents, generally mothers, working provides an opportunity for intellectual stimulation, career growth, or to afford the luxury of a lifestyle maintained previous to having children. Dr. Fox encourages parents to understand the value of investing in our children (shouldn't this outweigh the value of investing in a career while our children are young?) and offers many valuable tips on how to financially manage with only one income. Furthermore, she offers extensive research on the ramifcations of inconsistent childcare and insecure bonding with parents. The studies on what happens to our kids when we don't give them our time are quite clear and it isn't positive. Thank you, Dr. Fox, for speaking up.

Puts the focus where it belongs; on true needs of children
The author demonstrates the process of bonding that occurs between mother and child during the first year and how this affects future well-being. Author explains the necessity for security of bonding between child and one trusted person; not just any person, the parent. Author shows the vital, major difference between parental care and care by other loving adults. Especially convincing: even the "best" day-care centers present children with an ever-changing array of caregivers, preventing the most important task of a child; developing trust and bonding. Details the damage done by "caregiver roulette." Author explains how bonding is the most important aspect of early childhood development, not intellectual stimulation. However, early bonding improves future learning in school. The only weakness of this book is that the author focuses mostly on the impact of non-parental care for babies and toddlers with little emphasis on the ramifications for older children and teenagers. The reader will be convinced that caring for one's own child is the most important career a mother or father can pursue, and that there is no comparable substitute.

An Exceptional Delight
Benedict's Dharma is a rare find--a book on spirituality that is lovingly burnished by practice. Benedict's Rule was above all a work for practical application; what few understand is how well the Rule translates into Eastern practice.

Rarely have I enjoyed a book as thoroughly as this one; I regretted reaching its final page, for the journey it provided was such a delight. Yet the greater truth is that this book is meant to be a passageway, pointing the way to greater spiritual understanding and greater self-knowledge. The truths it uncovers are applicable to anyone who is serious about leading an authentic spiritual life.

This book is an exceptional treasure, offering significant and practical insights on every page.

Practicing "Christ's way."
"There is fire in the Rule of Saint Benedict" (p. 121) David Steindl-Rast, OSB, writes in the Afterward to this collection of Buddhist reflections on that Rule. Written in the sixth century, Saint Benedict's Rule is a set of guidelines governing Christian monastic life. This 137-page book is the result of a two-week "Encounter" between Buddhists and Christians, in which Norman Fischer, Joseph Goldstein, Judith Simmer-Brown, and Yifa were participants. Their "fresh take" (p. xiv) on Saint Benedict's Rule is followed by a new, 80-page translation of that Rule by Patrick Henry, OSB.

The Rule was written to practice "Christ's way." Christ said, "Whoever perseveres to the very end will be saved" (p. 97). For Buddhists, Benedict's Rule is about "walking the path to spiritual awakening" (p. 105). That is, both the Rule and Buddhist dharma offer "general guidelines for an inner journey" (p. 1). Judith Simmer-Brown notes that the Rule offers us insight into living a contemplative life amidst the demands of everyday life, or "anyplace you find yourself" (p. 3). From a Buddhist perspective, Benedict's Rule is about learning to live life "so it gets into your bones, under your skin" (p. 34), and about living with "a love of true life and a longing for days of real fulfillment" (p. 36), for this was "Christ's way."

It is evident from this book that "the monastery wall is always permeable" (p. 81). Benedictine monasticism is designed to lead one to spiritual riches on the path of humility (p. 95). It is possible, we're told, to practice a contemplative life outside the monastery walls. "The world is vast and wide," Norman Fischer writes. "Why put on your robe and go to the meditation hall when the bell rings?" (p. 89). Daily practice is "the common ground" for monastics of East and West (p. 124), and in his excellent Afterward, David Steindl-Rast, OSB, concludes that "lay practitioners are running away with the monastic ball" (p. 126). "Step out into the dark night," he writes, "raise your eyes to the starry sky, and you will experience what contemplation was before it had a name" (p. 126).

We find Buddhists and Christians travelling the same "ladders and bridges" in this harmonious book. Buddhist or Christian, this book will appeal to to that monk or nun cloistered in each of us, who is interested in "a life spent seeking the truth."

Clifford's Kitten
My four and five year old daughters enjoyed this story about Clifford's new kitten. They laughed at all the silly things Clifford did to gain attention, when suddenly all the attention was shared between Clifford and the kitty. I highly recommend this book... Clifford is always a favorite at our house... as it was when I was a child as well!

Clifford's Kittens
The book I read is Clifford's Kitten.
Clifford was so bad and he smashes the car. I liked this book.

Sibling Rivalry Between Clifford and a Visiting Kitten
Our younger daughter found Clifford, the Big Red Dog, to be one of her favorite characters in picture books. The many humorous plays on his enormous size left her giggling and laughing. The illustrations took the simple ideas in the book and made them unforgettable. This book can help you explain to your children about not being jealous of other children in your family.

"I'm Emily Elizabeth. This is my dog, Clifford. He's the only pet I ever had . . . except for one time last year."

"A kitten came to our house. I think he was lost."

"Mom said we could keep him until he found his owner."

Emily Elizabeth puts the kitten to bed in Clifford's old basket, and puts it close to her bed. Clifford becomes jealous, and sleeps so close outside her window that he knocks the house atilt from its foundation on that side. The next day, Mom says the kitten has to sleep with Clifford.

Whatever the kitten does, Clifford wants to do . . . often with hilarious consequences. The kitten's butterfly chasing leads Clifford to swallow a kite which he has mistaken for a giant butterfly. Dad pays the boy so he can get a new one. The kitten scratches his claws on a tree, and Clifford sharpens his nails on a light pole which is uprooted in the process. The kitten rides in a doll's carriage, and Clifford hops on a real dump truck. The kitten plays with a spool of thread and Clifford knocks a huge spool of fiber optic cable through two walls of a neighbor's garage! But Clifford is not fussy about eating while the kitten is.

The kitten makes a mistake and goes in front of a moving car. Clifford pounces on the car, and stops it before the kitten is injured. The car, however, will need some work.

Eventually, a boy claims the kitten and rides off with him in the basket on the handlebars of his bicycle. Emily Elizabeth sighs, "Oh well, I still have a pretty good dog. The last illustration shows Clifford's enormous pink tongue licking her.

After you have enjoyed this story, I suggest that you talk with your children about how different children in a family can become jealous of one another. You can use this book as an example, and also mention your own feelings towards your siblings when you were young. You want to be sure that older children realize that they got the same tender treatment that the new baby is getting. Pulling out their photos or videos can help.

Focus on companionable pleasure in one another over rivalry at home!

Get one fast
Not for novice or beginners, a must have for coffee Experts very technical, the bible of the coffee industry. I feel lucky just to have one.

It doesn't get any better
"Coffee Technology" was the only book I needed when i helped establish a coffee co-op in Haiti. It contained more information on the growing, processing and roasting of coffee than any other source I read (including the famed Urker's book). Not for the coffee beginner but could be used as a teaching and training tool to those new in the business. Highly Recommended!

This book is a coffee engineer companion
Coffee Technology was written in 1963, it contains all the wealth of experience gathered by Mr. Sivetz, a chemical engineer and coffee consultant, while designing, installing, and starting up coffe processing plants all over the world. The subjects covered range from drying the grain, psychrometric charts, roasting coffee, percolation, aromatizing soluble coffee, packaging roast coffee. All subjects are covered in depth in a "Theory and Practice" format where the process is analized with formulas for pressure drop, temperature and pressure changes, mass flow and later, experimental results are provided. Allthough it was written over 27 years ago, the information is valid because the markets for coffee change but the physics of the process is the same.

Spices made Easy
This is an incredible book. It includes encyclopaedic information on all the most common spices and most of the rare ones. Not only does it include a description of their flavour and aroma but of their cooking and medicinal uses as well.

The book starts with the history of spice trade (in a brief review of about 6 pages) and ends with a basic recipe book so that you can put your spice knowledge to work.

I greatly recomend the cinnamon cookies recipe at the end of the book.

As an extra it also contains recipes for mixing spices in order to produce curries, quatre epicees, sambal trassi, nam prik and many other as well.

This is a must for any spice loving kitchen.

Extremely Valuable Cooking Resource
Living in an Asian country, this book has been a tremendous help in identifying the huge variety of spices available in local markets. I find the presentation of the different ways the spices are prepared (powdered, whole, dried, fresh etc...) to be most helpful. I really recommend this book!!

Beautiful presentation of facts about spices and seeds.
Informative text, bright, clear photograph of spices and aromatic seeds. Briefly describes their cultivation and uses. An excellant reference on spices from around the world with comments on the history of the spice trade as well as more than one hundred recipes demonstrating their uses

Insightful and contemplative "must read"
Emotional Longevity explores the dimensions of health and well being in a unique and refreshing way. Though based on research, it offers a refreshing (and understandable) perspective differentiating it from other books of this genre. It clearly defines and illustrates how each of the elements affecting longevity play out in our lives and in the lives of our children. It juxtaposes science with vignettes, making it not only informative but compelling as well. It is an insightful and contemplative "must read."

Good adjunctively or solo
...

When I picked this book up, I thought for sure that there was nothing else to be learned, but I was completely wrong. For once, this book is backed by scientific research and the results are shown for experiments such as positive and negative outlooks, overcoming illness, likelihood to die early, the list goes on and on. 'Emotional Longevity' does not indicate the length of an emotion, but rather teaches us to view things in a light that will produce a much higher quality of life, and will ultimately lead to a much healthier, longer, and more fulfilling, realistic lifestyle. I know it sounds cliche, but it's true. And it's different from all the others to boot.

Highly recommended from a person who highly needs good books like this. :) (Who doesn't?)

Absolutely the best book on health available today
If you care about living long and well, this is the book for you. When I saw it at my local bookstore it literally jumped off the shelf. You can't always judge a book by its cover, but in this case the contents lived up to the promise on the jacket, "What Really Determines How Long You Live."

There are many things that I could say about this exceptional book. The most important is that at a time when we are deluged by the latest hype on health and happiness, this book, by one of the premier researchers in the country, gives us the real facts about holistic health.

I've been working in this field for 38 years and consider myself one of the experts, but I learned new things in every chapter.

At a time when Gender Medicine is emerging as a new field of health, this book gives us the facts to help us understand why men continue to live sicker and die sooner. It doesn't have to be that way. We can all improve how long and how joyfully we live.

If you buy one book this year on Mind/Body/Spirit, make it Emotional Longevity. You'll be glad you did.

This text give a top to bottom account of model building via RSM. If you have a question, consult this book.

great practical text for applied statisticians
George Box and Norman Draper have written an outstanding text on model building and response surface methods. This is an excellent companion to Box's text with Stu Hunter and William Hunter on experimental designs "Statistics for Experimenters". Another excellent, more recent and detailed account of response surface methods can be found in the book by Montgomery and Myers.

Excellent book
I do a lot of experimental work for my research and this book is definetely a good investment. I rate it amongst the best in the subject

Europe's Inner Demons: The Demonization of Christians in Medieval Christendom
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (2000)
Author: Norman Rufus Colin Cohn
Amazon base price: $16.00
Used price: $9.59
Average review score:

How the Great Witch Hunt Really Started
Europe's Inner Demons is a fascinating account of how some generally harmless traditions and superstitions combined to make the massive witch hunts of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries possible. There are no conclusive figures, but it is generally agreed that several thousands of men, women and children were executed during this period across Western Europe. With the only exception of England, where this phenomenon never really caught on, this was a widespread practice in countries as different as Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Sweden, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands and particularly in France and Germany. But how did it all begin? Why was Eastern Europe and the rest of the world virtually untouched by this phenomenon? And how did the educated classes came to believe the ancient peasant superstitions that allowed the Great Witch Hunt to take place?

You'll find all the answers in Norman Cohn's stunning piece of historical detective work; an exhaustively researched and brilliantly written book that doesn't deal with the Great Witch Hunt itself but with the societies and traditions were it originated, in some cases stretching as far back as classical Greece and Rome. Also prominent are the persecutions of members of several heretical sects throughout Middle Ages and even religious orders like the Templars. Norman Cohn also analyses the works of modern "specialist" like Margaret Murray and Montague Summers and concludes that the reality was more complex and definitely less glamorous than they thought.

A Classic of Historical Writing and Sober Thinking
Norman Cohn's Europe's Inner Demons (The Demonization of Christians in Medieval Christendom) originally came out in 1975 and is a nice companion piece to his Pursuit of the Millennium book. It has remained in print because it is a sober analysis of the fantasies behind the persecutions of such dissenting Christians as the Waldensians which led horribly to the great witch-hunts of the early modern period. The author helps remove much of the scholary nonsense that had accumulated onto the historical concept of witches in the past two centuries and puts them into their proper historical context. The book begins with a wonderfully enlightening glimpse of antiquity that is both illuminating and horrifying as the later fantasies against witches are first seen being used by Romans against early Christians. This is a well-argued and presented book that deserves to remain in circulation as long as people continue to believe there was truth behind the accusations direct at these persecuted and demonized Christians of the Middle Ages. A superb book.

Elegantly Written -- The Intellectual Roots of Witch Hunts
Witch-hunts have erupted again and again throughout the history of Western civilization. The accusations are remarkably similar and stable over time. A group of "witches" or "devil worshippers" are accused of sacrificing and eating children, engaging in incestuous orgies, and worshipping a "god" in animal form who presides over the obscene rituals. The first such accusations were leveled against the early Christians, culminating in a bloody persecution in the (then) Roman city of Lyons. The most recent example occurred in the United States in the 1980s and early 1990s, when similar accusations were made against teachers and child-care workers across the United States in the "daycare ritual abuse panic" that included the McMartin, Country Walk, and Kelly Michaels cases. In "Europe's Inner Demons", Norman Cohn shows how the "fantasy" of witch-cults grew and took shape during the early Christian era, leading to persecutions of heretics such as the Waldensians, orthodox Catholic Crusaders such as the Order of the Knights Templar, and finally the Great European Witch Hunt, which eventually spilled over into North America in the famous Salem Witch Trials. This is one of the most informative books on witchcraft available, elegantly written, and relatively short. It will appeal to anyone who is seriously interested in witch-craft, organized persecutions, or the history of religious thought. More importantly, it will provide a deeper understanding of the "fantasy" of witch sects and bloody satanic cults that still lives in our own country and our own time.
