A Student of Krumholz's
I am a student at the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, OH, where Norman Krumholz is a full-time professor. In 1994, I had the pleasure of taking an urban studies class that he taught. I enjoyed the class so much that I went on to take other urban studies classes, and eventually changed my major from journalism to urban planning. Dr. Krumholz is a brilliant man, and a gifted orator. His class had such a profound impact on me. I ended up on a completely different career path because of his teachings. It's rare to find someone so dedicated to social equality. I highly recommend anything he's written.

Krumholz is crafty and insightful. What a read!
Krumholz describes a planning experience that is so instructive that it will alter the way we look at professional planning forever. His experiences are documentations of persistence, triumph, defeat, and victory.

I love this book
If there's anyone who's ever heard Mike Adkins tell this story, live or via tape, you've gotta have this book. I heard him talk about his times with Norman from a tape that was able to listen to in 6th grade which was about 10 years ago. What this book does is it takes the story of Norman and tells it more in-depth and it's more personal as far as explaining Norman's spiritual growth, and also Mike's spiritual growth as he helped Norman accept the gift God had fore him. For anyone who's ever heard Mike speak, and for anyone who's ever heard of Mike's story in general, get this book.

A good hearted, non-fiction book of helping others
It tells about Mike Adkins who helps his strange neighbor, Norman.

Marilyn a Biography

Norman Mailer's meditation on the life of Marilyn Monroe
"Marilyn, a Biography" was Norman Mailer's first attempt at biography, but this is really much more than a meditation on the woman who was the major sex symbol of 20th Century American Popular Culture. Mailer's goal is to attempt to understand a beautiful, complex, and tragic woman, and he is particularly taken with the contradictions Monroe's life presents to us. He also presents her as a symbol of the bizarre decade of the 1950s in which she made her impact. What you have to keep in mind it that Mailer makes no distinction between fact and speculation as they are merged his mind. Mailer has the novelist's desire to connect the dots and complete the picture, and certainly the splash the publication of this book made, a quarter-century after the publication of "The Naked and the Dead," would appeal to the author's legendary ego.

However, in addition to being a biography this volume is also a pictorial retrospective of an actress whose greatest love affair may well have been with the camera. During the 1950s Marilyn Monroe was the most photographed person on the face of the planet. During that time Lawrence Schiller was a young photographer who would take the celebrate color photographs of a nude Monroe frolicking in and around a pool on the shot on the set of "Something's Got to Give," the film from which she was fired shortly before her death. Years later Schiller arranged a photographic exhibit from the stills of many major photographers who had worked with her, such as Richard Avedon and Bert Stern. The exhibit was called "Marilyn Monroe: The Legend and the Truth," and toured the United States and Japan. The photographs arranged arranged here as a photograph essay to offer a counterpoint to Mailer's text.

The resulting combination is certainly provocative, and, one can hope, insightful on several points. The problem is that we have no way of really knowing which points are the valid ones in this speculative biography. This is not a book to be read to know about the life of Marilyn Monroe, but rather an attempt to capture her essence and have it make sense. "Real" biographers and historians will dismiss "Marilyn" as mere sophistry; but the Sophists maintained that truth could not be known, if known it could not be understood, and if understood it could not be communicated. Ergo, all biographies and histories are sophistry, and Mailer's "Marilyn" just blatantly embraces the charge.

Excellent!
I loved this book. Norman Mailer wrote this book like poetry. I could not put it down.

I am so glad you found it for me even though it was out of print. I would have hated to miss reading this book.

Also, the book was used but was in perfect condition. Thanks for everything.

Everyone who loves Marilyn Monroe should read this book.

satisfying journey into the past
I collect womens diaries and memoirs from the Civil War era as well as the pioneer era. This book is a must have for southern plantation buffs. I felt like Laura was personally introducing to each member of her family. The wonderful old photographs add so much to the text. Not sorry I bought this one and it will definitely stay in my collection.

A look back in time
We recently toured the Laura Plantation a purchased this book in the gift shop. I couldn't put it down! Laura wrote her memoirs so that her children would understand her early life on a sugarcane plantation. In these memoirs, Laura discusses how her great-grandparents obtained the land, how the property was run, and the lives and deaths of many of her family members. She describes fabulous parties in New Orleans and how she met her husband. The second part of the book is filled with additional information gathered by the Marmillions as they researched the Plantation's history. The book is full of photographs of Laura, her family, the plantation, historic papers, and personal items. This is a wonderful opportunity for a personal glimpse into Creole Plantation life. And if you are ever in the New Orleans area, I highly recommend visiting the plantation.

The only real "catalog" of American traitors during Cold War
Roughly 100 American traitors, most of them within the U.S. defense establishment, are itemized in this book, the only such over-all review I have encountered. As I have said on several occasions that I believe we have at least 500-750 additional cases of espionage to discover, at least half of them controlled by our "allies", this book is for me a helpful reminder of the true pervasiveness of betrayal in a Nation where opportunism and financial gain often outweigh loyalty and principle.

"And so poetry wins a few hearts."
"There's more to this life than we know," Norman Dubie observes in his poem, "A Grandfather's Last Lesson" (p. 103), a theme he has explored in his poetry for more than 34 years. Born in Vermont in 1945, Dubie is a graduate of the Iowa Writer's Workshop. He has been a poet at Arizona State University at least since the 1980s, when I was a student there, and he is a practicing Tibetan Buddhist. Although he has published twenty books of poetry since 1968, he has been curiously silent for the past decade. THE MERCY SEAT includes poems collected from seventeen of Dubie's previous books, and nearly 100 pages of new poetry. This 165-poem collection is divided into Dubie's 1967 to 1990 poetry (pp. 7-298), and his 1991 to 2001 poetry (pp. 299-398).

Dubie has been called a "poet's poet." Although he is not an easy poet, Dubie is one of our country's finest. His poetry is complex and dreamlike, painting a picture of life that is both wretched and blissful. His subjects range from Randall Jarrell (p. 18), Chekhov (p. 87), Thomas Hardy (p. 107), Coleridge (p. 148), Einstein (p. 150), Meister Eckart (p. 194), and Thomas Merton (p. 265), to a "dark cat" stalking fireflies, "sometimes falling/ On her back, sometimes her jaws working/ Very fast" (p. 17). Dubie's poetry is also rich in sensual imagery: "Later, in a dark room, both of us speckled, middle-aged, and soft/ I dragged my mouth like a snail's foot up your leg and body/ To your mouth. We both shivered" (p. 146). For anyone who appreciates poetry at the top of its form, THE MERCY SEAT should not be missed.

G. Merritt

essential
For anyone interested in poetry, not just contemporary poetry, but the history of poetry, this book is absolutely essential. Mercy Seat covers almost the entire span of Dubie's career. For whatever reason his first book, Alehouse Sonnets, is absent from this collection. Despite this the reader is given a very valuable gift.
Dubie speaks with a voice that is both ancient and new. It's as if he has always been here, yet just arrived. Beyond these comments though let the book speak for itself.

A Key Reference for Those Interested in Christian Mission
This is an excellent resource for those interested in the development of modern Mission theory. The book is produced in a concise dictionary format, with articles on over 70 prominent figures from a variety of traditions. Each article provides a biographical overview of the subject personality, a summary of their main contributions to Mission, and a discussion of their central writings. Articles conclude with a select bibliography of foundational sources that provides the reader with an excellent starting point for further reading and research.

Because the book focuses upon those in Mission who have left a literary record, there are few women who are examined in these pages. Women missionaries (generally) tended not to write treatises on mission theory and practice. So, even though they were central to Christian Mission during the time period covered, they are virtually absent from this volume. This should not be counted as a fault, however. Rather, the reader should keep in mind the limits of what the book covers.

This book should be in the library of anyone interested in Christian Mission. Excellent.

Biographical studies from the Modern Missionary Movement
Mission Legacies is an attractive, durable hardback book of missionary biographical articles published by the American Society of Missiology through Orbis Books. It is divided into several major divisions: "Promoters and Interpreters," "Theologians and Historians,""Theorists and Strategists," and "Administrators." The chapters of this book first appeared as articles in the "International Bulletin of Missionary Research" beginning in 1977. Chapter assignments were made in a "serendipitous fashion over a period of about twenty years", as editors chose well-known contemporary church historians to write the biographical profiles.

Some of the famous 75 names are from the late 1700's, but most are from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They were chosen without regard for disciplinary, national, or denominational backgrounds, though there are only six women and six representatives of the two-thirds world among them. This will no doubt be different if a later edition is published.

Though the articles are scholarly, they are very readable and interesting. This will serve primarily as a reference book, but lovers of world missions and biography will find themselves often dipping into it for information and inspiration. I was pleased to find such diversity as Pius XI and William Carey, such educators and promoters as A.J. Gordon, John R. Mott and W.O. Carver, and such famous missionaries as David Livingstone, Hudson Taylor and Lottie Moon. I was glad to see historians like Kenneth Scott Latoureette and Stephen Neill, such innovative missionaries as Frank Laubach and E. Stanley Jones and such missions strategists as John Nevius, Roland Allen, D.T. Niles and Donald McGavran. In these pages, students of world Christianity "can gain insight into the spiritual and human dynamics that produced the modern Christian missionary movement". This book, now in its fourth printing, should be of interest to all students of World Christianity and Mission.

Momentos de Quietud para Matrimonios
Maravilloso!

Bendiciones.
