If you love yellow iron, you need this book!
Eric C Orleman has produced a superb collection of photos and written a great text to tell the story of the greatest construction equipment manufacter on earth. The only possible hangup is the book is so big, it won't fit on a standard shelf. You'll just have to leave it on the coffee table to torment the misses!

Caterpillar Chronicle
Caterpillar Chronicle is another Eric Orlemann book that has hit the mark with pinpoint precision. Using his usual perfection and attention to small detail, Eric will take from the start with Holt and Best through today. To any person interested in the big iron this book will not disapoint.

The section on the development of the hi-drive D10 is full of information on how it was done and just what a gamble it was for Cat.

Prototypes-What an assortment. It's amazing to see all the different things that go on in product development, from the hi-drive D9G test machine to the mobil-trac batmobiles. Included in this section are numerous pictures of things that Cat tried and scrapped. Some of these contraptions make the hi-drive idea look tame.

Each turn of the page brings a new treat of Cat yellow. Some models you may have seen or even operated, and others you may never see but in pictures. A true pleasure.

If heavy equipment is your hobby, and Eric's name is on the cover, BUY THE BOOK!

If its Big and Yellow, its in here!
Once again, Eric Orlemann has come up with the goods. "Caterpillar Chronicle" is a superbly illustrated volume full of wonderful photographs of all kinds of Caterpillar Machinery. A fan of Caterpillar for years, I found it a joy to turn each page in anticipation, to be rewarded with another stunning photograph.

From the "Best Steamer" to the massive Caterpillar 797 dump truck, "Caterpillar Chronicle" contains something for everyone who ever loved Caterpillar machinery. I found the photographs of the prototypes and pre-production machines especially interesting. To trace the history of the famous Cat D10 tractor through its development is one of the highlights of the book. I am sure that one could write a whole book devoted to the prototypes, one offs and the concepts that never made it to production.

The text is well written and tells the story of the history of these machines well, with lots of detail. The large format of the book is great, as well as its quality. Well bound and protected by its hard cover, it will be the centre of my collection for many years, and last as long as these wonderful machines.

The Compleat Talking Machine: A Collector's Guide to Antique Phonographs, Third Edition
Published in Paperback by Sonoran Pub (1998)
Author: Eric L. Reiss
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

simple read, very informative
great book for those who want to know more about their machines. has helpful step by step instructions on how to repair the wood and metals of the phonograph. has washed out b/w photos that could have been color. but overall, this book is helpful for those who want to repair their machines and want to learn a little history behind phonographs as well. good low price for this valuable information.

Great info, good writer
The Compleat Talking Machine is not only a great resource for people interested in restoring old phonographs, it's also a good read -- Eric comes across as a real person with a sense of humor. He keeps his repair information and instructions general for the most part -- you may need to interpolate his instructions depending on the model of phono you have. Read carefully!

Excellent, but watch focus on table models, few floor models
An excellent reference with great bibliography -but one warning - it focuses strongly on "table" model phonographs - has few pictures of upright floor cabinets. However it led me to buy a number of additional references to identify British machines.

Finally one that challenges.
I am into the second go around of this book. What fascinates me the most is the fact that Eric doesn't provide the tyical text book solutions. This book makes you think about your situation and helps you in creating innovative solutions.

Loaded with focused advice, worth the read
"Achieving success is not an accident; it results from a deliberate process of identifying a compelling purpose, passionately pursuing your vision, preparing for high level outcomes, and performing at your best." Thus we being our journey with a seasoned (two decades) executive coach, professional speaker, and consultant in peak performance. The author is a proven expert in his field-a specialty that has enduring value for individuals, teams, and organizations.

The book--full of advice and counsel that would cost you thousands in a personal consultation--is organized into five strategies. The strategies are Direction, Culture, Empowerment, Coaching, and Renewal. Each strategy is presented as a section of the book, with three or four chapters on each category. Two special features add value to this book: an abundance of relevant quotes throughout the book and cameo contributions from thirteen fairly well-known authors and executives. A bibliography and index round out the book.

Under Direction, Allenbaugh shows readers how to link purpose and passion with performance. Chapters focus on creating a compelling mission and vision, linking into your passion, and implementing your vision. The Culture section describes how to sustain a results-oriented, customer-focused climate-valuable for individuals as well as organizations. The three chapters illuminate various aspects of culture, including the importance of values. The Empowerment section focuses on releasing human potential. There are several insightful chapters on empowering people, honoring the differences among people, and hiring winners by using Attitude, Aptitude, and Alignment as filters. The coaching section addresses building others' success, effective expression and listening skills, and a focus on results. The last portion of the book explores the "3 Rs of Renewal: Release, Reaffirm, and Reinvent." Chapters on individual renewal and organizational renewal contribute useful perspectives.

Easy-to-read book for individuals, managers, business owners, consultants, and those charged with the responsibility (and opportunity) of coaching others to deliberate success. This is a good how-to book, enjoyable and enlightening as a read-through and worthwhile as a reference when you need a re-focus.

A common sense way to accomplish your goals!
I have been a fan of Eric Allenbaugh for some time now and was pleased to see that he has put his ideas in print so that everyone can benefit from them. Dr. Allenbaugh's style is down-to-earth and common sense. He makes what so many people shy away from because they don't think they understand it, straightforward. The book is based upon his real life experience as a consultant and coach. If readers will apply Dr. Allenbaugh's advice on vision and mission and combine it with creating a culture of empowered associates, their organizations will reap long term dividends! If the reader does nothing else, the chapters on performance coaching should be taken to heart. The workplace will be so much the better for it! Deliberate Success should be required reading for all CEO's and executives!

good intro on B2B web services
I was looking for an executive level summary on B2B services, and this book help me to understand the issues without overwhelming me with the technology.

Good overview of ebXML and web services
The book provides good overview on the ebXML architecture, and gives lots of business case examples. I highly recommend this book for business manager looking into implementing ebXML and web services in their company.

Fits ebXML into the Big Picture
This book really helped me build on what I already knew in order to get a handle on ebXML. The author does a great job of showing how ebXML builds on XML standards, and also how ebXML relates to Web Services, which I'm just starting to get a handle on. It provides good technical detail on the ebXML architecture, and gives lots of business case examples and reasonable guidelines for developing a strategy for staging implementation of ebXML. Coverage of security and the other major specs is very complete and readable--I highly recommend this book!

Employing Generation Why
Published in Paperback by Chess Press (18 February, 2002)
Author: Eric Chester
Amazon base price: $24.95
Buy one from zShops for: $18.88
Average review score:

Outstanding in Content, Flow, and Design
Employers and educators-parents, too-are befuddled by the younger generation. So, what's new? We've had that condition for generations. Ah, but this generation is quite different than anything we've encountered in history. Today's young people seem to be wired differently, making them more difficult to understand and work with. This book will lift the fog, increasing your insight, appreciation, and skill to more effectively tap this powerful resource.

The book is divided into three sections. In the first part of the book, Chester explains Generation Why's traits, values, and perspectives-the good, the bad, and the ugly. Readers will gain valuable insights into a generation that will have a tremendous impact on the workplace and on society. This section of the book is well-constructed as a sort of stream of consciousness that will hold your attention as your knowledge expands.

The second section is filled with information and advice for employers. You'll learn about recruiting, training, managing, appearance, fun, recognition and rewards, and retention in bite-size pieces. The design of this book is quite appropriate, as it fits the way your mind must work if you are to be successful in connecting with Gen Why. And that takes us to the third section-ways to connect...and disconnect...with these unique individuals.

Now the fine points. This book delivers useful information, but it also provides interpretation. You learn and you understand after reading each section. The consistent format aids in absorbing the volume of knowledge presented in these pages. Call-outs will help scanning readers grab the high points, but don't be surprised if they pull you into the text looking for more.

Reading a book with this much detail can be overwhelming. In these cases, I find myself wishing there were some kind of a summary or explanatory index at the end of the book. Bullet points would remind me of what I'd read and help me "get" the major concepts without wading through all the text again. Chester has done us all a big favor by presenting such an executive summary, chapter by chapter, at the end of the book. You can actually start at the end of the book to get an overview, then dig into the details.

This book is designed for efficient use, as well as an effective vehicle to deliver a considerable amount of information. There are no guarantees that you'll be totally successful working with Gen Whys after absorbing this book, but you'll be miles ahead of those who haven't read it yet.

Side note: as a consultant and speaker, I address generational issues in my work. Even with my prior knowledge, I gained quite a bit from Chester's work and will confidently recommend it to all my clients who might employ these young people. Come to think of it, that would be all my clients. Employers, teachers, parents, preachers-read this book!

Two thumbs up and more sleep at night
If you manage "Generation Why" kids you can't manage without this book. It has some very valuable insights on how to employ, manage and motivate a very difficult generation of kids. I'm a Wendy's franchisee and this is my new bible. Thanks Eric for making my job so much easier.

Highly Insightful and Very Entertaining
Books about generational differences tend towards one of two poles: informative but not particularly interesting or interesting but marginally informative. Employing Generation Why is an exception. The author's insights into the real differences between Generation Why and those older is based on years of first-hand experience and research. This is not abstract, academic theory. But Chester does a great job of making his insights engaging and entertaining. His vivd illustrations are memorable, and he clarifies murky subject matter with easy-to-understand charts and graphics. Whether you're an employer who needs help managing a new generation at work, or simply a parent or concerned adult who wants to make more sense of what kids are dealing with today, this is a book well-worth reading.

Bold! Daring! Shocking! True!: A History of Exploitation Films, 1919-1959
Published in Library Binding by Duke Univ Pr (Txt) (1999)
Author: Eric Schaefer
Amazon base price: $64.95
Average review score:

Beautifully designed and illustrated
In Eric Schaefer's beautifully designed and illustrated book, Bold! Daring! Shocking! True! A History of Exploitation Films, 1919-1959, you get the full history of the exploitation film genre, a genre that concentrates on shocking the viewer and making money in the process. In language that is brutally simplistic, and images that don't require second-guessing, exploitation films deliver the darkest fantasy of American culture along with its moral. Schaefer discusses the writing, production, and distribution of these films and profiles some filmmakers. He presents details on such exploitation masterpieces as Road to Ruin, Modern Motherhood, One Way Ticket to Hell, and The Wages of Sin.

Entertaining and Educative--say it ain't so
Yes, the book is exquisitely researched; it offers more. For those with an interest in the close past, Schaefer examines the time through its rejection/acceptance of these films. The book is worth purchasing for its pictures alone (if you don't like words). If you like films, well, naturally you will want it.

If you are one of those persons who just likes knowing "stuff"; if you enjoy _Longtitude_ or the _The Professor and the Madman_ then you will find this book entertaining.

The subject matter is both tillitating and important. The films encapsulate both the desires and the anxieties of the time; gratuitious scenes of sex tempered with doctor's warnings of veneral disease. What a wonderful juxtaposition of the double standards of the time.

Schaefer's style is soo easy to read too.

Essential reading
The author of this book, Eric Schaefer, is an associate professor and, frankly, reads like one. With that said, Bold! Daring! is probably the most important book on the American screen published in recent times. The author eminently explains not only how exploitation movies, the step children of the Golden Era film industry, came to be but, more importantly, why. Using a liberal dose of both contemporary and modern sources, Schaefer eminently describes the rise and fall and rise again of a genre not as easily dismissed as previous works would have us believe. BOLD! DARING! SHOCKING! TRUE quite simply fills an important gap in our knowledge of society in general and the film industry (with stress on INDUSTRY) in particular. Anyone owning a copy of, say, REEFER MADNESS, will wish to view it again for more than the accustomed camp value.

Clue #6 Booby Trapped
If you are a mystery person you need Clue. Clue is a book full of mini mysteries. In the beginning of the story Mr. Boddy put a note on their walls and it said, "Everyone will sign out for a weapon. This should end our crime problem." Mrs. Peacock did not like Mr. Boddy's silly sign up sheet for weapons. Colonel Mustard signed out the gun so he could make doughnut holes. In the end of story, they heard a scream from the Billiard Room. They found Mr. Green lying on the ground holding the knife. Mrs. Peacock said he was hit with a hard object. Mr. Boddy said he would go get the sign up sheet. Mrs. Peacock said, "Oh, there was no need to get the sign up sheet because she already knew who did it. I like the part when Mr. Green made doughnut holes with the gun, because it was funny. He made doughnut holes with the gun and that's weird kind of.

Not the worst, not the best
By the title, it sounds really good, but it's not as interesting as you'd think. I still would highly recommend it, but it may take you a little more time to read than the other ones. The last story was the best.

A Good Clue Book !
The sixth book in the exciting Clue series,Booby Trapped, was a very fun book to read. With Mr. Boddy installing a very expensive home security system we find his six guests are up to no good once again! I have always enjoyed reading Clue for the stories and not to solve the mysteries. If you do solve them you will have a fun time with Booby Trapped.

Great Book!
I think this was a great historical fiction. Very well-written with a very cool plot and shows the bravery of Thomas Roberts and James Fitz Gibbon. Eggcellent!

A Must Read!
The Bully Boys is one of the best works of historical fiction that I have ever read regarding the War of 1812. Living in the Niagara area all my life, I learned much more about the War of 1812 - especially in this area - than I had learned in school. I suggested the book to my husband, who was so impressed that he wrote (and sent a copy of the book) to the Dean of Academics at our daughter's school and The Bully Boys is now part of their Grade 6 curriculum. This story is so well written that it appeals to ANYONE 8 years old and over! ENJOY!

Two Thumbs Up for "The Bully Boys"
This historical book transformed into an exciting fictional novel is both exciting and fun along the way! This book interprets real life events from the War of 1812 from the beginning to the end of the war. I loved the plot of the book it combines the lifestyle of the 1800s with the action and the adventure! This novel has been a masterpiece!!!

The Care of Time
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (1986)
Author: Eric Ambler
Amazon base price: $2.95
Used price: $0.18
Collectible price: $2.00
Average review score:

Virtually as Timely as the Day It Was Published in 1981
Eric Ambler always relied on the contemporary political tensions to build his international espionage thrillers. The Care of Time is no exception except that it has stood the test of time for 22 years amazingly well. If you leave out occasional references to the Cold War, the rest of the book could easily have been set in January 2003. If you are interested in the question of how to control access to weapons of mass destruction, you will find The Care of Time provides you will chilling issues to keep you up late at night!

The Care of Time is Mr. Ambler's last novel, and is unfortunately out of print. Hopefully, the events in the Middle East over the last 12 years will increase interest enough in the novel to bring it back into print.

The key players in the book are an Arab ruler of a small Middle Eastern state, an American ghostwriter with a CIA background, and an international wheeler dealer in shadowy offerings. Amid them are sprinkled terrorists, generals, and reporters. The resulting stew builds around a thrilling, suspenseful plot in which the safety of all of us is put into question. To give you a flavor, here's how the book opens. "The warning mesage arrived on Monday, the bomb itself on Wednesday."

Those who like thrillers will find this one to be very satisfying unless they require the deaths of vast numbers of people in the story.

For Eric Ambler fans, I think this is the best of his work in his last decade.

In other words, don't miss this book! You may have to buy a used copy or find it in the library until it is back in print.

Be vigilant in seeking out the right solutions for all of us.

Donald Mitchell
Co-Author of The 2,000 Percent Solution, The Irresistible Growth Enteprise, and The Ultimate Competitive Advantage

Ambler's Care of Time
This novel, by the author of thrillers admired as the classics of the genre by Graham Greene and Alfred Hitchcock, concerns a journalist's encounter with an anonymous international shaker& mover who has fallen from favor with the probably insane Arab ruler he is presently serving. If you would like to read a novel which has all that you need to understand international terrorism, this is it. If you would like to read another which makes clear Arab-Palestinian terrorism especially, read Ambler's earlier novel, The Levanter.

Some middle east terrorists led by a wealthy fellow who...
...seems to enjoy living in a fully furnished cave, with all the modern conveniences... It's hard to believe this novel,Mr. Ambler's last,is out of print. Suffice it to say that the similarities between this 1981 novel, and today's world, are interesting. I was fortunate to have met and spoken with Mr. Ambler at the time. In fact, he was a leading author and screenwriter for over forty years before this was written. If you can get hold of a copy, don't miss it!

What a Surprise
The Chanukkah Guest was a great story that is both fictional but informational. This story teaches you about some of the Chanukkah traditions and other things that happen around that time of the year. From the preperations of the Chanukkah meal, to the games that are played. This is a good story to help kids understand a little bit about what is going on in real life.
In this story, old Bubba Brayna is gettin ready for a big Chanukkah celebration with all of her family and friends, but also her most important guest, the Rabbi. As Bubba Brayna is preparing her famous potato latkes, she hears a knock at the door. It is a Old Bear. Bubba Brayna has bad eye sight and bad ears, so she mistakes Old Bear for the Rabbi. You have to read this story and find out all of the humerous events that happen do poor, old, Bubba Bryana...

classic tale retold!! A winner!!
In this classic tale of mistaken identies, old Bubba Brayna is busy in her kitchen making latkes for Chanukkah. Her little house is on the edge of the village and it is deep winter. Though she is very, very old and almost blind and deaf, Bubba Brayna still can make the very best latkes in the entire village!! Tonight is a doubly-special night as it is both the first nite of Chanukkah and the village Rabbi is coming over!!

Well, there is a thump at the door of course, and in comes the Rabbi in his thick, winter coat. He sits down, eats plate after plate after plate of the latkes (still wearing his coat, for some reason) and when he's devoured them all, he gives Bubba Brayna a huge, messy kiss!!

As she's washing up, the village comes to her house to wish her a happy Chanukkah!! Even the Rabbi comes!! They soon discover that old Bubba Brayna has served all her latkes to a BEAR!!

Kimmel's book is beautifully written and delightfully illustrated by Carmi. The story is easy to read and very amusing when we, the readers, realize what Bubba Brayna doesn't: she's feeding a bear Chanukkah latkes!! The arrival of the Rabbi, who's coat, beard and hat are the exact same shade as Old Bear's fur is sure to delight children of all ages.

In a world where the commercial aspects of Christmas often overshadow the other holidays, "The Chanukkah Guest" is a welcome addition to anyone's library. It comes highly recommended.

Best Guest
Looking for a Channukah tale? This one surely will not fail. My kids love the Hannukah Guest. In my book it is the BEST!
