This book is fabulous! For sailors, the story alone is worth the read, but it is much more than just a story about sailing. Bertrand's description of the final race against "the red boat" (Dennis Connor) is so powerful that I felt what he and his crew felt, even before I had read what they felt! Any reader interested in the nature of sport and competition will find this book valuable.

Fantastic book. It is an instructive lesson in how to prepare for what you overwhelmingly want to achieve. Being set in the context of one of the most famous sporting events in history, the attempt to wrest the America's Cup from the US after 132 years, makes it that much more exciting. Sailors will love it, but anyone interested in the psychology of winning will gain from this book.

This lovely little volume is a gift that keeps on giving. Its essays are simple, elegant, soulful, inspiring. And thought-provoking. Even if I hadn't written the profile pages for this tpb I'd still go out of my way to tell people that it rocks. The introduction by Johns alone is worth the price of admission. Hawkman has been given a new lease on his four-color life and has never flown straighter nor looked better (with art by RAGS MORALES predominantly, the listing up there for Patrick notwithstanding). This is a trade collection that you'll go back to time and again for adventure and mystery.

Geoff Johns is perhaps the best comic book talent to surface in a looooong time. His passion for characters and story telling are never more apparent than in this collected edition of Hawkman. Following the Winged Wonder on his newly reincarnated adventures, these stories will entrance you with mystery and enthrall you with a unique romance. If you missed out on these books, pick up this trade. You will enjoy the flight!

Vincent Foster was murdered. That day on July 20, 1993, two men got out of a vehicle. There were a few other men there also. What did those men want so bad that day? That man kept on insisting that he didn't have it. Have what? What was so important that those men had to kill a man? To this day, I still would like to know what they were looking for. I think about it almost daily, wondering what the reason. That man that got shot that day, did not have a chance. It was obvious, he was set-up.

What Knowlton saw at about 4:30 pm, July 20, 1993, were all the cars that were in Fort Marcy's parking lot at the time, and none of them matched the photographs of White House Deputy Counsel Vincent W. Foster's car that were shown to him later by FBI agents. Meanwhile, Foster was lying dead in the back of the park. That simple fact is the genesis of this remarkable legal document, now available to the public as a book.

You will not learn in these 511 pages who murdered Vincent Foster or why, nor will you find a trace of any partisan swipes at the Clintons. You WILL see revealed in painstaking detail how the cover-up was carried out by the police, the FBI, and by our other major organs of power, not the least of which have been the news media. The greatest achievement of this book is the complete reconstruction of the evening of July 20, using in a very transparent fashion every available public document. Their method may be contrasted, as the authors point out, with Kenneth Starr, three-quarters of whose references are to supporting work by associates, work that is still kept secret. Following the drawings, the cast of characters, and the time line, as you read the book you can imagine yourself at Fort Marcy Park watching people come and go. You will get to see how, as the evening progressed, dried blood around a neck wound turned into wet blood from a mouth and head wound and how all the photographs taken of the original scene disappeared. You will also learn how utterly absurd is the story of the investigating officers that they visited the morgue before two White House officials got there and miraculously found two sets of keys in Foster's pants pocket, keys that they had somehow missed when they went through his pockets in the park. Apart from the patent absurdity of the story on its face, it cannot be reconciled with the time of connected events. And you will see solid evidence for the authors' claim that this is, above all, an FBI cover-up. They show that, contrary to the assertions of some leading White House critics, the FBI was heavily involved in the sham investigation from the beginning. Furthermore, the same FBI agents were key 'investigators' for both Robert Fiske and Kenneth Starr, thus making a farce of these prosecutors' putative 'independence.'

With this prodigious work John Clarke, Patrick Knowlton, and Hugh Turley have moved to the head of the line of those exposing corruption in America's major institutions. Every concerned citizen ought to read it.

As a northern deer hunter I am delighted with this book. Most of the whitetail deer books out there (at least the managment ones) are based in the south. Ozaga's book rings home with this Michigan guy.
The book is packed with great info on northern deer behavior. The photos are good and the research is sound. I wish there were more out there like it. So far, next to Alsheimer's deer books this is my favorite. I also just found a great northern food plot and habitat book called "Grow 'Em Right" by Dougherty and Dougherty which is right on the money up here in cold country.

It is not often that one encounters a book that answers long standing questions, especially those that arise from the contradictions found in the popular deer hunting press. There is nothing Gee Whiz about Mr. Ozoga, he tells it like he sees it. When he doesn't know he tells you that too. This book is based on 30 years observation and experimentation on white tails at the Cusino Wildlife Research Station and dispels many of the myths and folklore regarding deer.

Be aware, however, that this book is not easy reading, but seems to be based on the discussion and conclusion sections of his research papers. It is approachable and yields to the diligent reader. It is well worth the effort and the price.

I have been studying and hunting Whitetail deer for over 30 years and this book actually contains useful information. Too many times books of this sort are centered on some gimmick to kill the big one. This is not the case with Ozoga's work, you will come away with a deeper understanding of the deer's habits, social order and habitat requirements. Especially for the northern deer herd. For anyone who has an interest in Whitetails this is a must read.

My latest out of print Suskind book finally arived today and I tore through the packaging which I let fall to the floor and I sat down and would not get up until it was finished. I had to stop every couple pages and pound the table and laugh and shake my head. When I got about halfway through, I had to get up and walk around and compose myself before continuing. I was walking around wiping my tears of joy and wondering why there aren't more people going insane over Suskind like me. I had just gladly spent 60 bucks on this out of print book. As soon as I save up more I'm going to fork over 200 more to get The Double Bass to finish my collection of his literary efforts. I wonder why everyone just stops with Perfume, they seem to like that one enough.
I'm still young and there's a lot more books beyond Suskind to be read. Maybe he won't seem so brilliant after I've more, but for now, man he's good. I've never laughed so hard at reading anything in my life as the piano lesson part of Mr. Summer's Story. This book is so beautiful. I hope Patrick Suskind continues to publish more in the future that will blow more people's minds and influence publishers to reprint these wonderful books.

This is one brilliant book. I've read it in a library about four years ago, and I still a lot of it. Read it, you'll love it. Also read The Double Bass

Though a scholarly work, as well as an historical one, it is throughout biographically focused on an 19th century Exemplary Mage's Life and Work!

Paschal Beverly Randolph (1825-1875)was one of the first well-known Afro-American Novelists (if not THE FIRST), of whom Frederick Douglas was an admirer, and one of the most famous as well as sincere mediums of the Spiritualist movement, famous for his speeches of whom President Johnson was a fan, and a KEY figure in bridging the gap between that nec-romantic movement flowering dangerously into the European/American Occult Revival of the mid-late 19th century. He grew up an orphan in a murderous section of NYC; had almost no schooling, (yet became a recognized genius by sheer will/determination and self-discipline) who lived in the "(spiritually) Burnt-out" district of upstate NY where he added the abbr. "DR." to his title and sold his Glyphae Battah (Magic Mirrors)and Hashish, love & healing philtres:'snake-oil' basically, and married a part Native-American Indian Woman and tried to raise a family in dire poverty. And this is just the beginning to his life! He was very influential in getting Black soldiers into the US military in the last years of the Civil War(& getting them paid like any good-willing American!)...also, Blavatsky gleaned much from him, I think her writings concerning Randolph evidences, if only his living example of an highly artistic and Original one-man Occult campaign via Randolph's numerous Rosicrucian brotherhoods which The Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor would later appropriate nearly ALL of Randolphs ideas to immense practical benefit (see Godwins and Deveneys co-efforts in releasing many key documents in relation to this group), while the Theosophists waged war against that very practicality deeming it black magic basically...later the Surrealists' devoured Randolph's magical works which were circulated widely through the Russian-born Parisian Surrealist Maria de Naglowska efforts...How does a man like this, who entertained at the court of Napoleon and who counted President Lincoln as an acquaintance as well as knew most every influential Occultist/Abolitionist/reformer/Free Love Politician / Spiritualist of his day (Bulwer-Lytton, Hargrave Jennings, Laurence Oliphaunt, Andrew Jackson Davis,et al. ad infinitum)how does such a figure disappear from history? as if suspiciously erased? He is a beautiful writer--one must allow him that at least---whose sexual magic works serve as a poignant appendix to Deveney's excellent and thorough 600-plus page biography of a life that serves as an intimate magnifying-glass to probe into the goings-ons of an era filled to overflowing with myriad colorful characters and the energy and excitement of endless rounds of ingenious scientific discoveries and religious aspirations/explorations which as the Poet Osip Mandelstam said "if ever there was a golden age surely it was the 19th century!" Wherever you may be John Patrick Deveney, I thank you a thousand times over while reading this and thank you still for giving us this touching biography which served as a means to truly know what it must have been like to have lived in Randolph's day, during an age of 'Romanticism' and later,'Symbolism' in Art, while an Occult revival raged, made up of a noble search for self-knowledge and universal Uptopianist solutions to universal ills, and art finally becoming a RELIGION itself!...Western Esoteric studies should take as an example Deveney's biographical tome, and know the history of the world is in the lives of men and women more than anyplace else, as Jules Michelet pointed out a hundred years ago...I would suggest to anyone interested in gaining a first hand insight into an era & a subject finally lent proper credence to be studied seriously as it should be respected even if despised by "religious realists"...to read this book full of a life lived with such style & grace. Randolph's motto was: "T-R-Y !"...which is what I would say to others here interested in reading a rare work of an even rarer life that hopefully will become part of the American Artistic and Cultural iconography and more widely known literary canon because of Deveney's immense efforts and achievements herein! This collection is a fitting tribute to a gifted writer who chose to deploy his first-rate intellect in writings whose quality elevated them above the normal round of newspaper columns. The book comprises articles grouped across three broad subjects: anti-Communism, New York, and the fate of the Jews. The op-ed column may be an ephemeral form, but the subjects are of enduring significance and and Breindel's insights into them are often of startling originality.

It is salutary to note just how indulgent the American press can be of Communist totalitarianism, in a way that it never would be of extremism on the opposite flank. Clearly McCarthyism has had a disastrous effect on American public life, but not in the way that what Lionel Trilling termed the 'adversary culture' has ever understood. Breindel saw this, and reminded his readers that the tawdry history of Communist espionage in America, as revealed in the Venona decrypts, demonstrated that Communism really was a threat to the democracies and that opposing it was axiomatic to democratic politics.

Breindel's passionate commitment to the defence of Israel was, likewise, a function of his commitment to democratic values. When slippery evasions and idle prejudices make their way into so much commentary about Israel, it is heartening to read an intelligent and robust assertion of the essential truth that Israel's defence is as much a liberal cause as the overthrow of apartheid.

This book is an example of fine style and intellectual substance, eloquently expressed; it is well worth reading.

I have just finished reading "A Passion For Truth: The Selected Writings of Eric Breindel" and have been truly stunned by the power and truth of this young man's writings. And I cannot keep his book down - nor one of the final pieces that he wrote (not in this slim volume) - a scathing criticism of State Department official Aaron Miller for shoving Yasser Arafat down the throat of the United States Holocaust Museum.

Breindel died two years ago, 42 and way too young.

In many ways he might have been a contemporary of mine - his worldview of the former Soviet Union and of those stupid Americans who spied for "Uncle Joe" based upon his impeccable research was the same as mine; his unbridled contempt of Racists whatever their skin color mirrored my own feelings; as well as his blunt perspectives on the refusal of the Democratic Party to ferret out Left Fascists.

And while I might not be a son of Holocaust survivors as the author was, I too share the views on Israel and on Nazi collaborators and terrorists expressed by the author in the chapter entitled: "Fate of the Jews".

This small book which only scratched the surface of Breindel's powerful writings, is one that should be a part of every thoughtful American's home library whatever your race, religion, or creed might be. For Eric Breindel was a decent, true patriotic Jewish American whose writings reflected his deep love of Country and Religion, and who sadly passed on much too early.

This book will help you understand the depths of relationship with Jesus Christ. Pastor Schatzline communicates a deepness in relationship that I didn't even know was attainable. Before I read this book I thought that I was a friend of Jesus, but realized that I wasn't quite there. Pastor Schatzline explains the three levels of relationship with Christ - hireling, servant, and friend - and shows what a friendship with Christ actually is like. This book will stimulate you to go deeper in your relationship with Jesus to find that intimate friendship that your soul longs for.

I started reading this book the very day I received it from amazon.com, and couldn't put it down until it was finished that same evening. If your spiritual life is not continually growing and changing, then this book is for you.

I found the text to be very readable and almost conversational in tone. It smacks of the same caliber as books written by other noted authors in the same genre. If you like John Bevere's or David Wilkerson's books, you'll like this one.

Throughout the pages, Pastor Schatzline's desire for intimacy with God shines through, as well as his desire to convey that same hunger to the reader. The book begins by examining the root causes of why we become complacent in our walk with God, and urges us to repent of those attitudes. A seed of hunger for God is planted in the very first chapter, and is continually watered and nourished throughout the remainder of the text. We continue by studying the different levels of relationship which exist between ourselves and God, considering the defining characteristics of each level, and given direction for passing from each and on to the next higher level. All of this is backed by much scripture - the book is chock full of Bible references and illustrations.

I would highly recommend this book. The desires and knowledge contained within are precisely what this last day church needs to awaken out of its slumber.

The SBL Handbook of style is designed for those who are writing papers or dissertations in the field of ancient Near Eastern, Biblical and early Christian Studies. Most matters of style are comprehensively addressed, and where they are not, the editors refer the reader to the Chicago Manual of Style. The book is extremely useful for those who want to standardise their abbreviations and references. Nonetheless, several issues will have to be resolved in the next edition. First, although the book is nicely printed, the binding is extremely poor, and fell apart only after I had used the book a few times. Second, several essential abbreviations are missing from the list of Greek and Latin works. Third, not all abbreviations are located in the same part of the book, and so one has to keep going backwards and forwards to find the appropriate reference. Fourth, the editors sometimes display a dogmatic approach to style and appear at least to this reader to be a inflexible. For example they insist that writers ought to use Miriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary for their spelling. This dictionary however is only one alongside many other excellent dictionaries such as, the American Heritage, and the Random House. These criticisms should not detract from the importance and usefulness of this volume, which I recommend wholeheartedly.

This easy-to-use, inexpensive volume is a must-own for all who write in the fields of biblical and ancient near eastern studies. College and seminary students, graduate students, teachers, and researchers will find this book a fine substitute for Turabian and/or the CMOS for all but the most obscure situations. The discipline-specific nature of the work also allows greater depth of coverage without making it overlong. Get it today, or be behind the standard tomorrow.
