Descartes: A Study of His Philosophy (Key Texts (South Bend, Ind.).)
Published in Hardcover by Saint Augustine's Pr (1900)
Author: Anthony John Patrick Kenny
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

After you've read Descartes, turn here.
What a pity this book is out of print. Kenny's book on Descartes does not take the reader as far into the deeps of philosophy as Bernard Williams, and the book is not up to date. But Kenny is an intelligent philosopher and, furthermore, he is one of the best writers of philosophical prose. Undergraduates, who have just read some of Descartes' own work can read Kenny, understand the issues that he raises and, very often, they will come away with some idea of where they disagree with Kenny. This is an excellent book for teaching students, by example, how to respond intelligently to the thoughts of a great philosopher.

The Exhausted School: The First National Grassroots Speakout on the Right to School Choice

Renegade Thought
In 1991 New York Teacher of the Year John Taylor Gatto and a former student of his rented Carnegie Hall for the night, invited many different representatives from the unschooling and alternative education world to speak, and turned them loose on an audience of about a thousand people. This book is the collected speaches from that October night.

From the distance of ten years, the maverick nature of this event is fading somewhat. Any alternative--or at least the distrust of public schools--is now part of mainstream debate in America. "The Exhausted School" is worth reading nonetheless for the fire in the belly passion these men and women felt in offering a better way. And it's important to remember that Gatto--with his "Teacher of the Year" credibility---is the guy who got the dialogue started. Even the idea of renting such a venerable performance space for the event defies elitist decorum. The fact that certain teachers' unions and teachers' colleges tried to diss the "speakout" adds additional outlaw cachet.

Old homeschooling and unschooling hands won't find anything particularly new here--Gatto's speaches are reprinted elsewhere. But the various Sudbury-style and community grassroots school reps' presentations --as well as the pleas of Gatto's young students--are wonderful. If you're feeling draggy in your commitment to a Better Way than the American Public Education Behemoth, this book is like a good hug.

Benchmark book on a relatively young discipline of CI/BI
This is the most professional collection of articles on competitive intelligence I know of, with a good mix of both technical intelligence and foreign intelligence information. The Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP)has grown from 2,000 members in 1992 to 6,000 in 1999, and it's journal as well as its conferences, set the industry standard. A relatively low standard, but the standard never-the-less.

Excellent Information
When I opened this book, I couldn't put it down. Patrick's analysis of casino money management was excellent. He offers many constructive suggestions on how to save yourself money at the various games. I then read it a second time. Although I'm sure the author has many critics of his strategies, his philosophy is sound - keep as much profit as possible when things are going good and bail out when things are heading south.

I did not agree with his feelings on blackjack being a "poor" choice especially when you are playing for profit combined with comps. You can certainly play blackjack for an extended period without getting hurt too badly while racking up excellent comp time. Even a using just basic strategy, the average player shouldn't have his bankroll decimated too substantially unless you are playing with a shortage of funds. However, I did agree with his suggestions on attacking the dealers weak cards whenever possible.

Patrick's chapters on Baccarat, Craps and Pai Gow poker are especially insightful although I'm sure the math wizards would roast his opinions. The author makes a good point that most of us who make a couple of trips a year to a casino are not playing in "the long run". We need to get the most bang for our buck while not losing our shirt.

I believe this book would be an excellent addition to any casino visitor's library. There are very few titles out there dealing with just money management alone. Combined with a few good strategy books, the player would have an excellent chance of coming out ahead.

John Patrick is a Scream!
Now that I've commented on his outrageous writing style, let me say that his money management rules are solid gold. From the breaking of play into sessions through "Naked Pulls" to win goals and loss limits, Patrick's advise is right on the money. My only criticism is that following his system to the letter tends to take the fun out of slots-it's too complicated, too much to remember while playing. But there is much that we can learn from Patrick's book. It's one of the best out there for slot gamblers.

Cool book
This book was cool. It certainly lists a lot of songs...but if you have the knack for it, you could make up a lot that are better than some listed. But all in all it really helped my campaign, I wouldn't say it is a must buy but it does help.

Pastoral Answers to Questions About the Faith

Bertolucci Goes Back to Basics
The key word here is "pastoral". Just because thebook has questions and answers, this is not to be confused with apologetics, which is the art of defending the Catholic faith with rational arguments.

The questions here deal with practical, everyday problems e.g. What do I about my anti-Catholic husband? What is the Church's teaching on foul language? Is oral sex morally licit? So, it covers pretty important ground for the believer.

Personally, this is not Bertolucci at his best. I prefer his books like his personal testimony "On Fire with the Spirit" and his book to youth "Straight from the Heart". Nevertheless, this is still a useful book. It's from one of America's most popular Catholic evangelists. It's clear and readable. And very pastoral.
