Intellectual Capital Review
It is interesting in today's world to see books that remond us all the present and future value of intellectual capital. It is unfortunate the book does not focus on the de-valuation of intellectual capital when downsizing occurs in an organisation. The cost of replacing the intellectual capital does never figure in anual reports, it is 'hidden' by other standard costs, such as employee related costs, equipments, etc. We need to establish a quantification method, so that intellectual capital replacement is thoroughly investigated.

very handy for guidance in reading Catholic spirituality
Great book. It covers 14 Catholic classics including St Francis, St Augustine, St John of the Cross, St Teresa of Avila, .......and gives about an 8 page summary of each. I can then go and read the full classic after knowing what I am in for so to speak. I find that some books that are good for some are not good for you and though I am positive that we all need to read these classics at some stage in our lives - spiritually we need to be ready for them, and by reading the summaries it has helped me to see which is speaking to my soul.

Terrific overview of historical events
Covers an amazing amount of material from the time the earth first started coallescing from space dust all the way through to the 1970's (the edition I have was published then, I'm not sure if it's been updated). The structure is perfect for categorizing political and cultural events to capture the essence of what was happening at a given point in time. It's designed to jump in and out of chapters (very good index, chapter headings, timlines, short sections). Each chapter is written by experts on that time, so you get the sense that you're always hearing from an expert, although each chapter "reads" a little differently.

I've been taking it with me traveling for the last 15 years to Japan, Russia, Greece, Italy, Germany. It's a great way to read about what was happening as I've travelled to historical sites.

An Excellent reference
An Excellent reference - based on good research work, some of it carried out by Dr. Luis Coin Cuenca of the
University of Cadiz. I first read it in February 1993 and still refer to it now and again.
It covers earlier European voyages to the Americas, Vikings but NOT St Brendan's Irish voyage to Greenland etc, circa 570 AD.
Nor to speak does it cover the undiscoverd maps or puertolanos passed down from generation to generation of the Basque Cod fishing grounds located between Iceland and North America.
It also covers Colon's earlier voyages along the coast Africa and northern Europe and the very interesting clues that existed of another continent in the west atlantique. Interestingly it
does mention a mysterious map or puertolano in the initial voyage.

However it is Eurocentric and neglects to mention the great Arab explorers nor the voyages of Asian (Chineese, Polyanesian and ? Australian aborigines- whose remains were found in-Cien Fuegos-Chile & Brazil 3 years ago) to the North American continent.

Other interesting tales of discovery are 'the Adventures of Ibn Battuta' by ross Dunn ISBN: 0520067436
and the voyages of discovery of 'Pytheas the Greek' by Barry Cunliffe ISBN: 0713995092

companion to contemporary musical thought
The Routledge reference book "Companion To Contemporary Musical Thought" is a must for anyone who takes music seriously wether they be a performer, composer, musicologist or simply a lover of art and sound. Brought together by an editorial team consisting of John Payntor and other members of York University, the Companion is perhaps the first reference book which aims to present, in a clear and scholarly manner, the developement of contemporary music as well as the many facets of musical science and thought. The fifty-seven articles include a vast number of topics such as music appreciation, including the ability to understand differences in musical style, past and present; the reason behind the exploration of new musical resources; performers attitudes towards interpretation; in depth surveys of the possibilities concerning creative processes in composition;and the investigations and general critical writings of various music scholars. Contributers consist of various internationally respected composers, musicologists, performers, sociologists, educators and music analysts. The "Companion" presents a comprehensive survey of current thinking within the framework of culture, technological, structural and interpretational viewpoints. The topics discussed are of particular importance to the international music community today, offering possibilities for debate, discussion and stimulating study with the aim of promoting a richer understanding of music. Contributers include Jonathan Harvey, Lou Harrison,Ellen T. Harris, Bruce Pennycook, Jean-Claude Risset, Philip Wilby, Klaus Neumann, Peter Holman, John Bryan, Graham Dixon, R. Murray Schafer,James Fulkerson,Alison Wray, David Kershaw, Istvan Anhalt, John Payntor,Joel Chadabe,Richard Orton, Richard More, Curtis Roads and many others. Of course many of the seminal figures of twentieth century music are discussed accordingly throughout(i.e. Xenakis, Stockhausen, Cage, Varese, Webern etc.). The "Companion to Contemporary Musical Thought" comes in two beutifully bound volumes, consists of 1208 pages and includes an introduction by distiguished composer and writer Wilfred Mellers.

Really helpful spiritual classic
I must admit that John Cassian is one of my favourite spiritual writers so I wasn't surprised to find that I enjoyed this collection of his conversations as well. The main reason I rate it so high is that it is better value than any of the other editions which are available. I do recommend any of John Cassians writings that you can get hold of, and at the price this is probably the best edition at the moment of this particular work.
