A potpourri of information on the art and science of restraints. My wife and I have practiced the "spin, cuff and win" move on hitchhikers across the U.S. with great success. We highly recommend this tome!

An essential tool for professionals in education
The word "learning" has become very prominent in contemporary education terminology. Official policy document issued by organizations like UNESCO, or even European Union and US goverment publications have gradually replaced the words "education" or "training" with "learning". This fact has created some confusion among educators, curriculum design experts, and of course students. That is why a book such as "The theory and practice of learning" can be of great help to all of us who are involved in the process of education. It is a clear written comprehensive book that examines globally all aspects of the learning process (theory and practice). The book presents not only the views and opinions of the writers but it also demonstrates the most important features from theories of great educationalists who have influenced our society. I believe that reading this book will definetely help to understand the current trends in education. Congratulations!

The Treasure Chest: Stories Illustrated with Contemporary Woodcuts (Penguin Classics)
Published in Paperback by Penguin Books Ltd (25 October, 2001)
Authors: Johann Peter Hebel and John Hibberd
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

For afficianados of plot
Hebel wrote an almanac called The Treasure Chest in the early 19th century; these stories are culled from that. They are works of genius: Kafka declared one of his stories "the most wonderful story in the world," and with good reason. Hebel combines fantastic plots -- worthy of Dashiell Hammet -- with deep and melancholy themes (and also light-hearted ones). You'll gasp at some of the cleverness: cleverness of an order to rival Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, but worked out in very short, very entertaining stories. It's a great book.

Tribute to Peter Bauer: Including a Conversation With Peter Bauer & Tributes by John Blundell, Et Al

Tribute to a Great Champion of the Poor
Almost a year ago Lord (Peter) Bauer died, 86 years young. The Classical Liberal world lost one of it's leading lights and yet at the same time, across the world millions of people do not know that one of their strongest supporters is no longer with us.

Peter Bauer was a man in a million. His work on the economics of less developed countries led him to the belief that the best policies to help the people in those countries are those that allow freedom and enterprise to flourish or as Adam Smith would have it, to truck, barter and exchange. Sounds reasonable? Well perhaps now but back in the 1960s and '70s this was akin to heresy. Bauer's voice was as one crying in the wilderness and he was denigrated throughout the economics profession. Bauer committed what was thought to be a cardinal sin in those days which was to argue the case against aid, a case which has now largely been won.

Bauer persisted with his view and his work despite the enormous pressure of the opposition and in the end he prevailed. He dissented against much of the orthodoxy of the corpus of knowledge of development economics especially in the area of population. He supported the individual against the state and recognised the capacity of the individual to make the right decisions for themselves and for their families not just in the short term but also in the medium and long terms and would make better decisions that the governments might.

Peter Bauer was a brave man and not just intellectually but also physically, standing firm in the face of strong opposition from student protests against his carefully thought out views.

Not a man to suffer fools, gladly or otherwise, Peter Bauer was a consumate seeker of truth, a scholar and a gentleman who would think the unthinkable and use his finely honed skills to substantiate his conclusions.

This is a wonderful little book which plays a fitting tribute to a remarkable thinker who deserves greater recognition inthe pantheon of the great economists than he has achieved so far. Any serious student of developing countries should invest in a copy of this book as an introduction to the thought of an economic colossus.

A Practical, Scholarly, and Devotional Commentary
This commentary covers the last 7 of the minor prophets. It and its companion volume 1 (on the first 5 minor prophets) are a splendid help for anyone who wants to read these prophets as God's word for us. Craigie gives us the historical background for the books and relates them to our lives today. The commentary is full of pithy observations worth remembering. These volumes are more interestingly written and useful than several of the other volumes of the Old Testament Daily Study Bible that I have used.

Interesting, stimulating, and original
I learned more from this book about recent poetry than from any other. I found the insights sharp and the comments to the point; and there was also a lack of the usual 'knowing' tone of academic books. There are many illuminating analyses of poems from 'The Waste Land' to 'V' and this leads to a marvellously full overview of the range of British poetry from Rupert Brooke to Seamus Heaney. I found it enrmously helpful for my essays, but I would have read it anyway!

An honest trip through an ethereal landscape.
The U.S.-Mexico border has proven immune to most forms of modernization. Therefore leaving the rugged Chihuahua/Sonoran desert with literally thousands of scarcely inhabited miles, and it becomes difficult to say which is more colorful, the people or the desert sunsets; And we find the Spanish names have become nearly as beautiful as the photographs. Fortunately, this work is more than just a picture book. It is filled with in depth essays covering everything from chino grass and millipedes, to the last Mexican Wolves - and the people who made the region what it is today. This book is very 'real'. There is no feeling of being in a dream world. The magnificent photos are imaginative, but not exotic. No phony filtering or heavily staged shots. (The surreal beauty stands easily on its own merits, and the photographer obviously understands this.) I give this book a '9' rating because it will not work as a casual [coffee table] book. Any visitor who takes a peek will certainly melt into it, leavin

Classical Sociology Understood
As a student of sociology, I found the text to be definitive and an excellent resource during my studies. The text offers a clear analyasis that is very readable and user friendly to the less initiated in the ranks. A very good companion for Giddens in the study of classical sociological ideology.

An Excellent Addition to the Field
We have long needed this book. Historically, most texts have either concentrated on describing the natural history of venomous organisms or the medical implactions of envemonations (a noteable exception is the excellent contributions by Halstead). This book provides a great deal of biological informtion about toxic marine organisms and then combines this with the latest information about medical treatments for envenomations. In addition, this book also contains an excellent reveiw and classification for cnidae, which I have personally been looking for for a while. I honestly can't say enough about this text. Although this book is not really for the layman (you won't find much in the way of popularized accounts of injuries), it is an EXCELLENT text for specialists.
