CNS = Structure + Function + Dynamics
This reference considers the organization and function of the brain. The structural approach considers neural morphology and synaptic connectivity. It is noted that pasterns of reciprocal interaction are common, binding structural units together. The functional approach considers functional decomposition of skills or behavior. Computational neural networks are used in models but are constrained by neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. 'Schemas' are functional entities. The dynamics approach allows analysis of spatiotemporal neural phenomena, and provides another bridge between structure and function. The reference begins with three chapters, each an overview on structure, function and dynamics. Chapters on the olfactory system, hippocampus, thalamus, cerebral cortex, cerebellum and basal ganglia follow.

Where is my Palgrave Dictionary of Economics????
I'm soooo looking forward to getting this terrific Economics Dictionary/Encyclopedia. Wonder what's taking the publisher so long to get it out? Price is about one-third what the original cost. I thought of getting that original one back in graduate school (Ohio State University). But now the softbound will do just fine, as a welcome addition to my library. Ohhh, Palgrave, where ***are*** you??? Come to my ***mailbox***. Quickly, please........

The New Wildfowler

Amazon base price: $60.00

Fantastically Comprehensive Book
The New Wildfowler is not only the biggest waterfowling book I have read, it is also one of the very best. The chapters on duck hunting, goose hunting, punt gunning and inland marsh shooting are particularly comprehensive and the attention paid to population dynamics and ecology are very welcome. With contributions by over 30 of the world's leading waterfowling experts, this really is a book in a million.

Important study
This is a report on a historical 5-day workshop that was held in Ft Bliss, TX in 1997 that mapped a course for the future of U.S. Army noncommissioned officers, of which I was a participant. From this meeting many changes have been implemented, and a Future NCO Vision was established. USASMA/TRADOC/SMA selected some of the most senior leaders from the different MACOMs and located in El Paso. The group also included a mix of 1SGs and BSNCOs with recent field experience. They were given a subject area on the future of NCOs and over the days debated and discussed what was on the horizon.

If you are interested in what the most senior NCOs within the Army had discussed, then read the book.

Nonlinear Preference and Utility Theory (Johns Hopkins Series in Mathematical Sciences, Vol 5)
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (1988)
Author: Peter C. Fishburn
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:

a recommended book
This book covers the area of non-expected utility theory. One of the most prominent researchers writes this book very carefully. So you can get enough knowledge to master choice theory. The history of utility theory is very long, so this book will be a good help for economists, not only for graduate students.

An essential to your core library for Neurology practice.
This two volume text is an essential reference and mandatory reading for any Neurology resident or Staff Physician. I had the opportunity to train under the instruction of many of the contributors to this text. I found it to be rich in detail and clinical expertise. I refer to it often in my practice. It is concise and easily understood.

Pocket Guide to Tqm
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann (1998)
Authors: John S. Oakland and Peter Morris
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:

Oakland and Morris simplify a Complex Topic
I'm working on writing a guidance document on developing quality systems for use by the Environmental Protection Agency. In the process, I've reviewed a lot of books on quality (e.g., Deming, Juran, Crosby, Goetsch and Davis, Beckford, Dobyns and Crawford-Mason, and Oakland to name some). Discussions of quality can get pretty abstract quickly. Sometimes it feels like I'm in a quality fairyland that's mostly separate from everyday life. Oakland and Morris have presented this very complex topic in terms that most people can understand. The abundant graphics explain as much about quality as does the clear text. This book serves as a good starting point for understanding how quality concepts and tools can be applied in everyday workplaces. If necessary, one could then read other books for more detailed information about quality systems. My only quibble is that this book needs a list of suggested reading for more detailed information about quality concepts and tools. Oakland's other books are pretty useful themselves and could have been mentioned.

Start at the beginning. Stop when you are ready. Start again
I never expected anything from this little bundle, but got the world. Isn't it amazing, that in the last place you look comes insight. What makes sense, stop there. Thanks to John Roger for compiling such an amazing direction. I cannot wait to read the large version of this baby. I have only just gotten to the web and am glad to share what has been with me since the book came into my hands.
