Great Read...
In Commies, Crooks, Gypsies, Spooks & Poets,Novak expresses his obvious love for his motherland in a humorous and enthralling way. It opens the reader's eye to the diversity of life on this planet. Its an honest and caring insight on post world-war Prague, but being assosiated with this beautiful country is certainly not a requirement for it's enjoyment.... READ IT, whoever you are...

Short, but clear-sighted
In the summer of 1995, author Michael Novak was approached by Pfizer Inc, with their desire to have him give three lectures on key issues facing businesses in the 21st century. This short book (51 pages if you include the title page, endnotes, etc.) covers one of those lectures.

In February of 1859, Abraham Lincoln gave a speech in which he listed the six steps in the history of liberty, and the final step was the adoption of the Constitution of the United States, which includes the first establishment of copyrights and patents. Mr. Lincoln argued that copyrights and patents were the cornerstone of American prosperity and advancement. Some 150 years later, Mr. Novak makes the argument that copyrights and patents are just as important now as they ever were.

If you are interested in reading a short, but clear-sighted argument in favor of copyrights and patents, then I highly recommend that you read this book.

The Guns of Lattimer

The Guns of Lattimer, Tragedy that Sparked Real Change
Michael Novak has taken a unique approach to telling the story of a tragedy that happened in Lattimer, PA in 1897. Most of the book is the fact-filled history of a day when about 400 unarmed Slovak anthracite coal miners from Harwood marched to Lattimer to call on Lattimer miners to join their strike. They were met by the seriff and a heavily-armed posse of citizens. As the sheriff tried to stop them, someone yelled "Fire!" and the ensuing slaughter is known as the Lattimer Massacre. Nineteen miners died, many shot in the back as they tried to flee, and many others were badly injured. At the following trial, in which the defense attorney played on the prejudices of the jury, the sheriff and posse were acquitted. Novak personalizes the story by including the fictional story of a Slovak miner in separate chapters, and while I think this feature is unnecessary, it does make the reader even more aware of the injustice done that day. After Lattimer, the miners realized fully that they needed a strong leader and a strong organization, and John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers was on the scene to take advantage of that fact. I found The Guns of Lattimer to be an unexpectedly moving book. Novak is not an historian. The book combines all the best features of well-researched history with social commentary. Novak is himself descended from Slovak immigrants so the reader is able to see this story from their point of view. It's biased, yes, but factual. I recommend it highly.

Above Average Math Book
This book has great explanations, but the binding falls off easily. Mine fell off in about two weeks of moderate use. But the lessons are clear, the examples are good, and the format of the book in general is easy to follow.

Great Guidance on Inner Guidance
"Intuition for Starters" is a small book on the basics of intuition and following your intuition. While there are several books on the subject available and many more that have a chapter on intuition, this book is unique in one very important aspect. It is the only book I have seen on intuition that effectively explains how to know when something is intuition and when it is not. People often learn to distrust their intuition because it has proven wrong when in reality it was not intuition at all. Learning to discern when something is truly your intuition speaking to you and when it is not is critically important if you are to learning to trust your intuition. This is a recommended read because the discussion of discerning intuition is so well done.

Inviting student success through creating inviting schools
This book provides important information for any teacher or administrator. Those seeking to enhance their classroom or school to create a positive environment will find the research and information valuable. In the age of high stake testing it is easy to lose sight of the need to create an environment where students feel invited to be part of the learning process. Purkey and Novak create a clear visual picture of what is possible in inviting all stake holders to be part of the educational process.

LOTS of fun to read aloud!
I just finished reading this book to a 4th grade class @ Cape St Clair Elem. school in Annapolis. Md. It was "Guest Reader Day", and it was chosen by the Media Specialist for me to read. I had so much fun reading it, that I will now search for a copy to add to my child's library. It's alot of fun to annimate, and the children laughed many times, especially as more, and MORE bears kept showing up. An adorable book for ALL kids.

Epic Voyage
This book cronicles the story of Drum, a 70ft Maxi yacht in the 1986 Whibread Round the World Yacht Race. Written by the captain, Skip Novak, the book details the tale from Drum's construction, to the infamous capsize, to the noble achievements made during the race. The book is informative, entertaining and funny in places, giving insight into what goes through a captain's mind during a Whitbread race. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in sailing, or just good old adventures!

The People's Welfare: Law and Regulation in Nineteenth-Century America (Studies in Legal History)

A Review of the People's Welfare by William J. Novack
The People's Welfare is a wonderful tool to understanding the background of the federal and state governments within the United States. Topics include the purpose of the two separate governments, their unique functions and how they adapted (or didn't adapt) to social and economic changes throughout the developments of the United States. The only problem with this book is that it perhaps does not address the existence of the police power in the federal government as much as it could have. Nonetheless, the People's Welfare is the place to start for those who are interested in the functions of government and the legal history of this country.
