Hopewell Furnace
This book is an interesting and informative work. It gives a brief overview of what the iron industry was like during the end of the 18th and majority of the 19th centuries. It discusses methods that were used in smelting the iron, and the importance that iron had in the daily lives of those who lived in that era. It will also give you a glimpse of what life was like during that period of time. It will increase your knowledge of a former day, and give you an appreciation of what those people went through so that things can be where they are today. This book is well written, and easy reading. I would recommend it to anyone who would like to learn more about the importance of iron and life in the 19th century.

Lincoln's Abolitionist General: The Biography of David Hunter

Pretty good insight into how the civil war was prosecuted.
Although General Hunter wasn't an abolitionist in the sense that Frederick Douglass or Garrison were, he may have been the highest ranking military officer to have issued orders freeing southern slaves without authority (before the Emancipation Proclamation) because he believed southerners who seceded were traitors and he needed every soldier INCLUDING BLACK SOLDIERS he could get. Hunter's bland history as a "paymaster" during the Mexican war and the Frontier Indian wars is an added bonus, as the job was much more than it seems. Miller's recounting of how Hunter decided which of the homes of "rebel sympathizers" to burn down is also highly instructive of what it must have been like to conduct a "war" in your own backyard, with family names you know. Hunter was a personal friend of both Jefferson Davis and Abe Lincoln and routinely went around normal military channels to make his points. Miller doesn't try to present Hunter as a hero, but an interesting character in the Civil War who was well in front of his fellow Republicans on the issue of freeing the slaves and enlisting them into the war. (They didn't all want to be free, nor did they all want to fight.) The prose is a little dry, but the story carries it along well. Civil War buffs should particularly like this viewpoint of the Virginia campaign. Recommended.

Mysteries of the Bible Now Revealed
I have read this book from cover-to-cover twice and found that it is a good leaping-off point to do further research on any of the topics covered. Anybody who wants to do more in-depth study or just wants a place to go to to do a Sunday school would do well to purchase and read this book. Since this is a book in the Bible Mystery Series, I can not wait for additional books to be published.

NO CHARLOTTE'S WEB HERE
While Wilson and Savory's "That's Some Pig" is good, the real reason I bought this book was for Edward Lee and John Pelan's "Charlie's Web". No Charlotte's Web here, this story would be at home in any of Jeff Gelb's Hot Blood series books. You'll never look at pigs and spiders the same way again. Trust me.

Review of A Picture Book of Robert E. Lee
This biography explained the life of Civil War General Robert E. Lee. This book explains his life from birth and his family, to the marriage and his influence in the war. It explained how the general was the leader of the Confederacy. The book also explains the Civil War so that it is easy for the kids to understand. In the book there are also great pictures that mildly display war along with quotes ad images from that time period.
The author did a wonderful job displaying the war and allowing children to understand the concept on a very neutral level. I also liked the outline at the end of the book on his life. It helped children really visualize the order of events.
I like this book for all the above reasons also for the ease of reading. I found it so easy to understand and I think that this book will allow the children to gain interest into biographies and the war. Maybe even lead them into reading all Adler's other biographies.

Recommended Reading for Missionaries and Pastors
I'm delighted this work has been revised! I first read this book in the 1980's while a missionary in El Salvador and consider it one of the more personally influential books on the subject I have read. While acknowledging every culture presents unique challenges, the authors contend a standard planning model can help missionaries develop unique strategies for any culture. I have personally followed their ten-step planning model and incorporated it into missionary training curriculum with good success. The empahsis on teamwork in mission is accompanied with a wealth of practical suggestions. I recommend this work to any present or prospective missionaries. The principles given in this book are just as applicable to local church pastors who need to understand basic concepts of strategic planning.

This is not light or easy reading. The authors' research is sound and their presentation thought-provoking. Read this book carefully and I predict you will have a hard time forgetting what you have read.

Not Just Antother Hip Coffee Table Book
Pop Art: U.S./U.K Connections 1956-1966 is a great read for those facintated with the Pop Art movement. The color plates are really good and so is the writing. It's an informative look at the parallels between the Pop Art movement in the U.S. an the U.K. The book includes the icons of the era along with some lesser known artists and works. It presents an interesting perspective suitable for both the beginner and expert art enthusiast.

Medical Student Review
Excellent Book. Table of Contents is organized by symptom (e.g., Child with Stridor, Child with Abdominal Pain, etc.) and then proceeds to give a thorough differential diagnosis of these conditions. The most common are discussed in detail, along with prototypical examples of the radiologic findings in each condition. It is a 1994 text, which is probably the only drawback. The first edition was ~1984, so this one should have life left in it....
