Super text for teaching the essentials of research.
Although some of the examples are dated, this is a fantastic text for teaching the basics of all aspects biological research, from planning, execution and analysis of results to writing abstracts and publishable articles. Great for undergrads and graduate students as well. Professors who choose this text won't have to go around picking and chooseing bits and pieces from diverse sources.

A "reader friendly" guide to places and sites
Collaboratively compiled and edited by Polly Welts Kaufman and Katharine T. Corbett, Her Past Around Us: Interpreting Sites For Women's History is an impressive and "reader friendly" guide to places and sites historically and culturally important to the subject of Women's History. Eleven articulate and informative essays explore the use of women's history and feminist analysis to reexamine familiar places (ranging from family kitchens to city halls) through the lens of gender. Individual case studies are utilized to interpret (or re-interpret) homes, gardens, factories, cemeteries, business districts, even entire communities with respect to their import for Women's History. Highly recommended for Women's Studies and American History reference collections, Her Past Around Us will also prove exceptionally useful reading for anyone interested in incorporating local and national historic sites to illustrate and enhanced a Women's History class course curriculum.

Here Comes A New Reader
An incredible begining book for a first time reader. My daughter 4 yrs. old picked it up and began reading, really reading for the first time. The relationship of words and illustrations make the book easily understandable, fun to look at and easy to follow along with for first time readers. After I bought this set of books I went back and purchased them all. Highly recommend this for first time readers. A smile will show you why.

Beautiful, moving and intelligent poetry.
Katharine Coles's book, "A History of the Garden" isone full of beautiful, personal poetry that reveals an intelligentauthor behind the scenes, playing with words and situations. Even in her first poem, "Fear of Falling," Coles, playing with the ideas of gravity and death, writes that the night she was born "a moon as full and hot as August scraped the rooftops." The rest of the poem builds on this, drawing on links between gravity, lightness and death.

In a later poem, "Natural Disasters," she describes a "mother's lifelong rage" as the "slow burn of a wire behind an old house wall," and continues to describe the mother's rage internally and externally, building up to an emotional crisis that, surprisingly, doesn't occur.

What the sum of these poems represent is a clear, scientific approach to poetry; it is poetry that uses science to illuminate and compare, but which is not dehumanized by science. Her poems are full of love, for the earth and for the people in it.

An excellent book for first time decorators.
House Comfortable is a very complete resource for creating a comfortable home. I recommend it for first time decorators and those who are designing a custom-built home. It covers a variety of topics including lighting, color, furniture placement, room measurements, etc. But, it goes beyond listing the design elements of a comfortable home and actually tells you how to achieve this goal. This book includes a resource section and loads of wonderful, practical advice; detail you would tend to omitin a do-it-yourself project. It reads like a stylish text book that you will want to take with you on shopping trips.

I Know How My Cells Make Me Grow
The information about cells is delivered in a conversation between Sam and his Mom. Useful, but it is not on a level with the Magic School Bus. It contains good color illustrations, and I would recommend it to teachers and students in the 2nd and 3rd grades.

A fun way to learn for younger children!
My 3 1/2 year old son loves this book! He can now tell me that blood is made of white & red blood cells, water, & platelets. This book puts the concepts down in a way that is easy for young children to understand. It also makes a fun book to read. I even learned a few things myself!

I Know Why I Brush My Teeth
This book tells about your teeth, and to brush and keep them clean. An excellent, rather a "wordy" book about teeth - lots of facts included. Contains color illustrations and I would recommend this one to K through the 4th grade. Also recommended reading for parents and teachers.

Entering the Circle
This book depicts the adventures of a young American woman staying in a Tharu village in Nepal. While her husband was there as an Anthropologist, she was there as a visitor. The author tries to adapt to everyday life in the village, and in doing so gives us a unique insight into what it is like to be a young Tharu woman--as the author, herself, goes through a period of discovery about what it means to be a woman.

A must read for anyone interested in Washington
I am not completely finished with this book, but wanted to post a review urging all who are interested in the history of our country to read this.

Mrs. Graham has gathered articles from many people associated with the govenment and also some who were natives of Washington and in the social scene. Some were White House employees. She has written an introduction to each article which is helpful.

There are many interesting stories never seen before. I especially liked the articles of behind the scenes preparations for the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939 by White House employees. Eleanor Roosevelt's article is different than the one she has in her book as it does not include the stop at Hyde Park.

Mamie is presented as a difficult taskmaster by the White House seamstress. All good reading.

I don't know if young folks will enjoy this book as much as I did, but they should give it a try.

Only objection. There were not enough pictures!
