A review of Jewish philosophy and purpose of life
This book was recomended to me by a Dutch girl I met on the beach in Tel Aviv. She left Holland to attend yashiva in Israel. I highly recomend this book to anyone wanting a deeper understanding of the purpose of life. My eternal thanks to that girl I met on the beach in Tel Aviv

Gertrude, Alice and the gang!
This book gives one of the best overviews of Gertrude Stein and her crowd! When it first came out almost 30 years ago, I read it and have been hooked on Stein and Alice and Picasso and Hemingway and Anderson and Wilder and on and on. Mellow provides very detailed information about the lives of all these greats and some have criticized him for his almost gossipy, "Entertainment Tonight" style. But what better way to feel a part of this circle of extraordinary people? Had more high school and college English and Art teachers used this book, there would be more readers and fans for this amazing artistic period! Hats off to the publisher for re-issuing this book!

It's ok...
Nothing spectacular to write home about. When I bought this book, I was hoping for the old radio dramas that I used to listen to when I was a kid on Sunday nights. I will say that there were some very good stories. But a few left you rather wanting.

Gertrude Jekyll's Colour Schemes
As an Engish Gardener "displaced in Kansas" this book was a delight. Anyone who wants to plan a garden large or small should turn to this little gem written over 80 years ago. Miss Jekyll was the definitive garden planner, her ideas of colours and seasonal planting will inspire you to create a beautiful garden of your own. Quite the best of her kind.

Classic and influential book on garden design
Gertrude Jekyll influences the great gardeners that influence the rest of us. Her book on color is apparently among her best writings. This book is valuable to anyone who is interested in gardening history. Her principles are also at the heart of modern English garden design. Her core belief was that gardening is more art than craft, and she borrows color principles from painters.

Marvelous Book
Having read a current bio about Gertrude Bell (Desert Queen), which I found a bear to get through due to the less than amazing quality of writing, I was curious about Bell's own writings and thrilled to find some still in print. Gertrude Bell could write!! What a wonderful book. Having an interest in archaeology and the history of ancient civilizations, I enjoyed the material she offered. But even if those aren't areas of interest to you, the people she met and talked to give one a better understanding of the midEast and of people in general. This was a hard book to put down. My only desires were that a map had been provided and that all of her wonderful pictures would have been printed on glossy paper so they could have been better appreciated. (I would have paid the extra!)

Blood-Thirsty Relatives Crash Drak's Birthday Party
Drak Fangula has just moved to New Jersey from Transylvania with his parents, Vladimir and Cosima Fangula. He's nervous about starting the third grade, especially since he's the only vampire at Pearson Elementary School. To fit in, he plans his birthday party with his first best friend, Jeremy Muniz, and invites four other classmates: Brendan, Chris, Steven, and Doug.

However, moments before his guests start to arrive, Drak's eccentric aunt and uncle pull up in a hearse with their three obnoxious, spastic children--Vincent, Ella, and Margaret Chompulas. Unlike the Fangulas, these wayward relatives prefer "fresh" blood over the bottled kind the Fangulas purchase from the blood bank. How will Drak save his friends from being the Chompulas' next meal without ruining his own birthday party?

"Drak's Slumber Party" is great for 7 to 10-year-old boys who like vampires but don't necessarily want to read very much (it's only 54 pages with a few illustrations). If you liked this one, you might also like the following books in the Monster Kids series: "Frank's Field Trip", "Harry Goes to Camp", "Boris Bigfoot's Big Feat", "The Curse of Cleo Patrick's Mummy", and "Zelda's Zombie Dance".

Refreshing and inspiring
The priests who wrote their stories for this book are so real and inspiring that I wanted to be able to meet them all in person. I loved reading about how they overcame struggles in their vocations in order to find the true and deep Joy and Love that initially attracted them in their inmost hearts. This would be a great gift for any priest to have on his book shelf, or for anybody interested in understanding the personal side of the vocation to the priesthood.

Excellent summary of Jekyll's work on gardens
This book has become my bedtime reading material. It offers an excellent summary of Jekyll's views on color, plant selection, the layout of beds and the philosophy of the garden. While I would have liked detailed drawings or layouts of the various gardens discussed, her written descriptions feed the imagination. I've already laid out a new garden border as a result of the insights gained, and I am inspired to read other works by Jekyll and others

Miracle year
Of the three great books published 1922/23--Ulysses, The Wasteland, and Geography and Plays--I rate Stein's work the highest. It is a bit daunting at first, though you will probably be amused at least by the wit on every page. But for experiments in poetry, plays, and prose, it by far outstrips Joyce and Eliot. The one essential modernist work. So advanced it is actually postmodernist in its approach to its audience, including, as it does, echoes of what is happening now around her so as to achieve a release from time and to become essentially timeless. Try it and see. This is a great investment. The first edition in four separate bindings is worth seeking out, though Stein tends to be pricey. But just read it in any edition. You'll love it.
