Dr. Blanck deftly employs a question-and-answer format
With her thoroughly "reader friendly" text, psychotherapist Gertrude Blanck's Primer Of Psychotherapy: A Developmental Perspective brings the reader fully up to date in contemporary psychotherapy theory and practice. Dr. Blanck deftly employs a question-and-answer format (illustrated with patient-therapist dialogue) to address a broad range of topics including treatment designs, building psychic structures, learning from symptoms and defenses, formulating a developmental diagnosis, teaching parenting skills, and determining when medication is advisable. The Primer Of Psychotherapy is especially recommended for graduate students in clinical psychology and social work, as well as practicing clinicians, supervisors, and residents.

Selected Writings of Gertrude Stein

Well compiled offering of a diverse writer
Normally I am hesitant to give a book 5 stars, I try to save this rating for when I really really really am impressed by it, and if this hadn't been a compilation of Stein's writing, I might not have given it this rating. It is really Carl Van Vechten that deserves the stars, Stein's writing is a bit much to digest or even swallow a lot of times, but Van Vechten gives an insightful foreword and has selected a diverse array of this colorful and eccentric author's writing. I had never read any of her work before I happened upon this edition and it proved insightful to be able to compare Tender Buttons and The Autobiography of Alice B.Toklas together side by side, as this edition allows you to do. A good way to gain a feel for the work of Gertrude Stein

Sincerely Yours
I found this book to be easy reading. Her characters were explained in such a way you became very involved with each one of them. It was a great interpretation of human behavior. And the story kept your interest throughout the entire book. I have recommended this book to my friends and family. This book would make a great movie of the week.

Mythic origins of the Western mind revealed in epics.
Companion piece to "Religious Conceptions of the Stone Age" by G.R.Levy(out of print). Mankinds journey into modern thought is explored with insight and archeological precision. Compared with much of the liturature available on this subject this book shines with clarity and beautiful language. A must read for serious students of religion, anthropology, epic liturature and ancient history.

Through Streets Broad And Narrow
Published in Paperback by Carrier Pigeon Press (1996)
Authors: Belinda Manley and Gertrude Enders Huntington
Amazon base price: $17.00
Average review score:

The Belinda Manley/Bruderhof story is a must-read.
Belinda Manley tells her story and shares her life in the high-demand Bruderhof sect, a must-read for anyone considering life in a communal settlement. Belinda is a brilliant lady, full of life and spirit. Her life didn't stop when she left the Bruderhof (Arnoldleut Hutterians). Indeed, it seems the next chapter of her life was and is the best of all. The Bruderhof/Arnoldleut story is a complex one. Although the Bruderhofers are good at getting out their "side" of the story, defectors like Belinda Manley should be heard/read. They have something to say that is of value. What is the truth? I don't know, but I do know Truth will win out. I suspect we haven't yet heard the whole story by any means! The Belinda Manley story is worthwhile reading.

Victorian Minds
Published in Textbook Binding by Peter Smith Pub (1984)
Author: Gertrude Himmelfarb
Amazon base price: $11.00
Used price: $13.00
Average review score:

Fascinating
This book is a collection of essays that address various intellectual, spiritual and political crises that arose in Victorian Britain, and how the Victorians dealt with them. The first four essays are on various "proto-Victorians", including Edmund Burke, Jeremy Bentham and Thomas Malthus. The next six are on John Stuart Mill, Lord Acton, Leslie Stephen, Walter Bagehot, James Froude, and John Buchan. These essays are on various subjects and are not biographical. The remaining four essays are entitled, "The Victorian Ethos", "Victorian Angst", "Varieties of Social Darwinism", and "Politics and Ideology".

As with other writings of Gertrude Himmelfarb that I have read, this book is somewhat dry. However, the author always takes fascinating looks into her topics, and provides the reader with a great understanding into what Victorianism really was about. As an aside, in the book I found the essays on Malthus and Acton absorbing, along with the essay "Politics and Ideology", which was an excellent look at the Reform Act of 1867.

great walking tour of Left Bank of Paris
Excellent way to tour bohemian Paris. Gertrude Stein owned a bookstore on the Left Bank in the early 1900s, which was the heart of the literary and artistic scene. This book includes 5 great half-day walking tours of the Left Bank. Among the sites on the tour are Helen Rubenstein's mansion which she had decorated with Picassos and Van Goghs, and which was ransacked by German troups in 1940; the bars and restaurants where Ernst Hemingway hung out, and scenes which appear in "The Sun Also Rises"; and the studios and residences of Picasso, e. e. cummings, Colette, Matisse, etc., etc. Each site is described in one or more paragraphs. I highly recommend experiencing Gertrude Stein's Paris. (This book was published in 1988, and is currently out of print.)
