very gertrude stein, but more readable
i usually find stein's play with words a bit frustrating. however, this is a more readable book, one of her most accessible works. insightful in its view of fame & narcissism in america.

Funny, brilliant, playful, and of course, interesting
This is a fascinating account of Stein's travels in America following the success of "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas". Stein finds many things interesting about America, and through her descriptions, so does the reader. Her descriptions of the habits, manners, lifestyle, and thoughts of Americans are very simple but profoundly accurate. Being a Gertrude Stein work, Everybody's Autobiography also features amazing prose that is often challenging but always rewarding. Surprisingly, Everybody's Autobiography is very approachable once one adjusts to Stein's style. This was the first Stein work I read and I've already begun reading The Making of Americans. I just can't recommend this book [and Stein in general] enough.

Not as exciting as others in the series
What I like about The Boxcar Children series is: 1)the kids arenot some angels, they are normal kids who have conflicts anddisagreements 2)these kids are kind, caring, helpful, and they spend time together (despite their age differences) and stand up for each other - and most important - they enjoy it! 3)the stories are usually interesting, often with unexpected endings 4) the stories are not violent, which is too often the case with books for any age . That said,I didn't like this particular book very much, since the story is not as exciting and the mystery feels like it's happening almost by the way.The ending also felt a little flat and boring. So while I highly recommend most of the other books in the series,I do not recommend this one too much.

The Mystery That Got Uncovered
I like my book The Mystery Of The Queen's Jewels by Gertrude Chandler Warner because it is a mystery. A mystery book is more exciting and you ever know what happens next. Also the endings will always surprise you. In this book they are in London and someone is following them. There are four children in the book who solves the mysterious and at least one person who is sneaky and makes the story instering. The children work together as a team and they never exclude each other. I think it is very interisting how the boxcar children don't fight because usually brothers and sisters fight. This book is very instring because it makes you feel like you're in the book so you will want to read more. This book will encourage young children to like reading. I would encourage young readers to read this series.

African American Midwifery in the South: Dialogues of Birth, Race, and Memory
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (1998)
Author: Gertrude Jacinta Fraser
Amazon base price: $45.00
Used price: $35.00
Average review score:

White state blanches black traditional health providers.
As this book is not available in stores or is even published yet, it is very difficult to find. I was in the lucky position to receive an advance copy from a faculty advisor. This is a very brief summary of what I have to say:

Fraser's exploration of Virginia's erasure of traditional African-American midwives is insightful and nuanced, reading the state's 1920's health policy between its lines. Fraser racializes the health policies which "retired" the African American community's most helpful and affordable care providers and thus exposes how far reaching prejudice can be. Not intended as a call to action for African-Americans as much as a historical exposition, the book is helpful for anyone studying the tension between modern and traditional forms of healing. Let's hope it gets through the publishing mill soon. END

Great Missionary Biography!
This was a super missionary biography. It was exciting, detailed, exotic, and spritually encouraging. However, it was a little too detailed in parts I ended up skimming towards the end. After reading about the trials and successes the Morse family faced in Burma, my trials paled in comparison. However, I liked the out of print sequel, "Exodus to a Hidden Valley" even better than, "The Dogs May Bark but the Caravan Moves On".

These Books Make Sense!
Great books for kids between the ages of 8-12, with cool characters like Benny, Jessie, Violet and Henry. this four kids lived in a boxcar until their grandfather found them and brought them back to his home. The neat thing about these book is that they're mysteries, and the mysteries actually make sense! SO i advise all grandparents, parents, uncles aunts and brothers and sisters to buy this for the little ones.
