Five Go to Smuggler's Top: A Famous Five Adventure
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Audio Books (1998)
Authors: Enid Blyton and Jan Francis

too pious and boring
Five go to Smuggler's top is Enid Blyton at her very worst. The Five visit Sooty's "exciting" old house, which is actually not an exciting house at all.As with all Enid Blyton stories, it has no suspense or mystery at all. I think it's crazy to buy a book like this.

Wonderful childhood memories of this book...
As a child I remember reading and re-reading certain passages of this book, which have stuck in my memory through to adulthood. I am so excited to have found the proper title(s) of the "Famous Five" series that I plan on purchasing and rediscovering as many as I can.

Classic Enid Blyton fun, one of her best.
In this adventure the five stay with Sooty in his exciting house on Smugglers top. In the usual famous five style there is mystery, adventure, villans and of course lots of great fun. Jan Francis reads with the same pinache that she brought to "First term at Malory Towers" and "The Twins at St. Clares". Overall, a real winner.

ENID LOSES THE PLOT
.

Dear old Enid certainly churned them out. There were 245 titles on Amazon's database at last count.

This story of our blue bell bonneted buddy is Part 12 of the "All Aboard for Toyland " series. Some romance comes into young Nod's life in the form of Tessie Bear. They get quite seriously involved, particularly when they lose Farmer Straw's milk-churn and basket of eggs, which was tied to Noddy's new kite which lifted the milk and egg up into the sky, while Tessie tries to get the hens back into the hen-run after she left the gate open. Got all that?

If they get caught, Noddy volunteers to take Tessie's share of the spanking. Tessie says "You're so nice and I do like you so much".

Enid was obviously such a high-flying authoress back in the 1950's she was apparently immune from the rigour of the editor's blue pencil.

A bad blooper occurs in the continuity of the story between page 46 and 47. On page 46 we have "..... the milk-churn wasn't up in the sky any longer. The string had broken and the churn had fallen down....". On the following page we have ".... Tessie kept her eye on the swing milk-churn high up in the sky..... "Noddy, Noddy - the churn's falling down, it's falling!" Woops!

You can't deny these stories are classics. The language and the sentiment in these tales is very Edwardian, that is, very stern and stilted. There is always a moral to the story, typically revolving around the virtues of charity.

Fiona Cummings has rewritten this series of books in recent times, under the Enid Blyton trademark. They have been greatly abridged with the illustrations more cartoon like.

Despite the quaintness, the unintended humour and sloppy editing, the originals by Dame Enid herself are the best choice. The original illustrations are gems and the stories although more wordy have a higher literary quality.

very poorly researched, poorly written.
I couldn't read more than one chapter. This book is very poorly researched and doesn't flow with much congruity. I am very disappointed in the lack of trust I found in the writing. I don't recommend this book to anyone.

Poorly written, even more poorly researched
This is undoubtedly one of the most poorly written books I have ever read. Being familiar with some of the key players in this story, I must also say it was extremely poorly researched. Mr. Benson got many simple facts wrong. Things which were mentioned numerous times in national publications, he got wrong. I seriously doubt if he devoted any time to checking his facts. The book is so awfully written that I found myself only able to read 2-3 pages in one sitting. The overuse of metaphors is nothing short of criminal. No wonder Mr. Benson had to self publish this atrocity.

Sad Commentary On Our Times
This is more than just the story of Enid Greene and JoeWaldholtz, this is the story of the Republican Party in the microcosmof their lives. The corruption behind Enid Greene Waldholtz's Congressional campaign isn't exceptional, it's the rule of Republican Party politics. She just got caught, and like all politicians, tried to blame a scapegoat (i.e., the suddenly "psychopathic" Joe).

I was living in Utah during this entire sordid episode, and Enid's blubbering television news conference changed nothing. The money stains were all over her fingers. Corruption is as corruption does.

I have not read book
I need to review have not read book. I am interested in a book that demonstrates making purses.

Beautiful photographs
I purchased this book because I want to buy a Leiber bag - I was disappointed that it didn't have more bags pictured - there are so many! It wasn't so helpful in helping me find a bag I like - I still haven't purchased one!

wearable, collectible art form
I bought this book for my daughter who has an obsession with unique handbags. This was the perfect gift for her! Not only does it show hundreds of designs, the book tells the fascinating story of Judith Leiber and gives a glimpse into the creative mind of this world-famous craftsman
(crafts-w o m a n). The handbags she has designed are whimsical AND elegant, and are coveted by celebrities and socialites. The book is interesting, inspiring and a whole lot of FUN. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates imagination, creativity, and uniqueness. BORING it's not!

Religious stories writen in an interesting way
This was quite a uniquie book when I first looked at it. I first picked it up for a joke from my younger brothers collection. Some of the stories were quite well writen, however there was no getting away from the fact these were still the same old sunday school stories. As a child I'd read many of Enid Blytons adventure books and that may have been what attracted me to this book. Having read as much as I wanted to read, I went back to her adventure novels. Just not my sort of thing but good for young children.

Enid Blyton's Hedgerow Tales

Gently-Told tales of Natural History
This gentle book is not a plotted story; rather, it consists of ten short tales (complimented by cute pen and ink sketches) about various wild animals who inhabit an English hedgreow.
It presents much information about Natural History but in the guise of mini stories; thus children will learn some zoology without realizing it. Chapters feature the following creatures; rabbits-hares, hedgehogs, lizards-newts, swallows-martins, dormouse-field vole, a fox hunt, badgers, cuckoo-sparrow, bees-wasps, and an evil Rat. Three chapters offer a bit of conflict to spice things up. Good reading for children 8-10 who want to know more about animals in the wild. This 1935 book has been reprinted in paperback by--are you ready for this-Red Fox!

Useful practice kit but Iack of a CAT's version of the test.
The NTC's Practice Tests for the TOEFL is a must-to-have companion for the NTC's Preparation Kit. I bought this kit because I did need more practice material for the TOEFL. The practice exercises are very similar to theirs in the Preparation Kit but are useful in order to get expertise for the TOEFL. The most valuable thing in the Practice Kit are the casettes because for the TOEFL is necessary to listen a lot. The problem that I founded is that the exercises was easier that in the real TOEFL test. As a recomendation to the NTC people I'm strongly suggest to incorporate a CD-ROM with CAT versions of the test this will give a more realistic aproximation to the real test.

Horrible
I never liked the Superstar editions and found this particularly awful. However, there is something good about it,and that is that it reveals that marijuana IS a dangerous drug.In this novel, dorky Enid with her dorky name and her dorky everything starts hanging out with one of the bad boys from her past, they take marijuana and then crash their car!Jessica accidentally gets high as well!!This book always gave me nightmares, plus it is boring.I don't like it.

So bad
I threw this item in the bin..I was 17 I remember this clearly. It was the 2nd time I had had bad dreams after reading the suspense.Fair enough-I had a Flu both times-But Even besides all that My gosh..what is wrong with Kate William??!I mean its like she would sit at a typewriter and think How can I bore people to death today??Only fabulous characters like Elizabeth and the dazzling Jessica(and no one else mind you)kept me wanting these books.

The best of the Super Stars series
This is the best of the Super Star series. It tells you about Enid before (according to Jessica) she became the "world's most boring teenager". Apparently she was a wild child before she and the perfect Liz Wakefield became friends. She relapses a bit in this book, and starts hanging out with the wrong people. Jessica gets blamed (unfairly in my opinion) for not telling where Enid is and something bad happens.
