Unforgetable reading experience
I am not going to go over the contents of the book, or much about Charles Bukowski, because if you are considering this book you must know something about the man and his work. I will just give you my impression of this collection of work.
No collection can ever really be complete, there are always new things to add, new commentary, newly discovered works, transcripts of records and unpublished letters, but this book does an excellent job in its attempt.
To me Charles Bukowski will always be one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century, because of the sheer brutality and honesty his work emanates. It is funny, sad, sadistic, cruel, scathing, enlightening and thought provoking. Everything I like to read. This is poetry for people who are disgusted by verse of flowers, trees and Greek mythology. This is RAW human emotion and experience smeared out onto paper. It is not perfect, and it is not trying to be. It doesn't always work, but there in lies the subtle beauty of Bukowski's efforts. the guts to try. The attempts at honesty, clearly blocked by his unwillingness to divulge everything, and his cynicism of man.
This collection is shocking in its beauty, and inspiring by its simplicity. Enjoy.

Bukowski, laughing until the end
Shortly before his death, Bukowski was the subject of an anthology. It is a good anthology, not a great one, but a good one, and Bukowski seemed to think so as well. He notes during the reading of one the selections that they "Put some pretty good stuff in here" which, for Bukowski, is a whale of a compliment. It took me a long time to realize it, but Bukowski meant for his works to be funny, tragically funny perhaps, but funny nonetheless. Hearing Buk read these well known passages from his poetry and prose is a pleasure that is hard for me to communicate.

He was a decent man.

Master of Nonsense
The Annotated Alice provides a treasure chest of information on the two Alice books and on the man, Lewis Carroll who was responsible for their creation.

Martin Gardner provides annotations throughout the texts of both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. Gardner's annotations help explain the inside jokes and mathematical and linguistic puzzles that fill the stories.

Reading the Alice books as an adult is quite a different experience than it was as a child. The books' complexity really stands out on a careful reading. In fact, what are generally regarded as children's stories can be amazingly frustrating to read due to the complexity of the language and the almost constant stream of puns that are sometimes lost on modern audiences. One must remember that the stories are told purely for fun. Unlike other Victorian children's literature one gets no morals, plot development, or character development here. Alice is a yound child who stays a young child throughout her adventures. She neither matures or learns anything from her adventures.

This is a very nice volume in its own right. It contains complete authoritative texts of both books and includes the supressed episode "The Wasp in the Wig." The original Tenniel illustrations are crisp and clear. The only difficulty is that the annotations are placed on the same page as the text in a small column that sometimes supplies more information than the text itself. The annotations themselves range from the definitional to the clearly eccentric. One can read all of them or only the ones that he or she is interested in.

On the whole this is an excellent volume well worth the effort to read if one has any interest in the world of nonsense literature.

The name of this review is called "Haddocks' Eyes"
I finally, and seemingly permanently, misplaced the 40 year old copy of 'The Annotated Alice' (which I had pilfered from my mother's bookshelf) for the last time. I can't go more than a month or two without it so I rushed to buy a new copy...just weeks before the more beautifully bound 'Definitive Edition' was published. No matter, now I have two (perhaps even three if the original turns up).

My point is that this book contributed more to my understanding of logic and wordplay than several semesters of college philosophy classes. If you've read this far then I am probably preaching to the choir but 'Alice in Wonderland' can hardly be classified as a childrens' book, dispite Disney's attempts to do so. The concepts Lewis Carroll and Martin Gardner bring to this tale cover such areas as set theory, meta-language, Aristotelian logic, topography, game theory, several pre-Socratic logic paradoxes, and even quantum physics. Yet John Tenniel's original illustrations remain as an welcome tether to the original publication.

Gardner does a wonderful job of bringing all the various aspects of these two stories together as he illuminates layer upon layer of meaning that might not be evident to an American audience or, for that matter, a 21st century one. My favorite gems are the French and German translations of The Jabberwocky.

This book ranks in my top five favorite books of all time.

scholarly Jabberwocky
The title of this book says it all--more annotations than a Richard Posner book, and as definitive an edition as one can expect. It is a bit peculiar to imagine a simple children's story dissected to pieces, but the researchers and editors behind this volume from Norton (purveyors of some of the best academic editions) bring new light to the hidden humor and brilliance behind Lewis Carroll's works. Featuring original artwork from the first edition, as well as some abandoned passages, you will not find a more complete version of Carroll's Alice tales anywhere else. A must-have for the children's lit bookshelf in your home library.

Fascinating- Like watching a slow-motion train wreck.
I could not put down this book. Watching beautiful but somewhat emotionally immature Julie ruin, and ultimatelly lose, her life, is heartbreaking, but strangely fascinating. Glatt does a great job of setting up the murder by profiling the victim's parents, and her difficult childhood. The background information makes it easier to understand how such a beautiful woman who seemingly had everything [handsome successful husband; lovely home; adorable baby] would chuck it all for a not too attractive and impoverised Greek cruise line worker. Well, not 100% easy to understand.

While reading, I felt like screaming at the victim: don't go with him. What, are you crazy? But, of course, if you read the book description, you know exactly how the story will end. Knowing does not make the read any less gripping, which is the sign of a good writer.

Well Written
This was a really good book short and to the point... It was really sad what happened to Julie but at some point you would have to think that she had lost her mind doing what she did giving her life up in the states most of all leaving her child...I think Julie was living in a total fantasy world and when she realized the reality of what she did she wanted to go home and than This mental case lost his mind...George was definetly in it for the fantasy of love and most definetly for her money but I do believe that he did think that if he couldnt have her no one could syndrome...We shouldnt say he was a loser yet ( although he sure is now)because he was only 23 years old but i think he just got to accustomed to having julie take care of him and the thought of her leaving put him over the edge...Must read book, Very sad...

True crime readers will like this one
Blind Passion by John Glatt is fun to read. This book is about Julie, but it starts out with the life of Julia, her mother. By the time you get to Julie, you can see what makes her tick and why she would run off for a romantic adventure in a foreign country. She leaves behind a life with a husband who worked his way up, and a 3 year old daughter. I agree with the boyfriend's mother in Greece, who voices the traditional Greek idea that a mother who abandons her child to live with a man is beneath contempt. On the other hand, what happens to the victim here is even more beneath contempt! This is an interesting book about a crime committed in January of 1999.

Not what I was expecting, but quite good.
I have only good things to say about the man John Piper, both as a theologian and pastor. I was however, a little disapointed with this book. I love all three of these Christian heros and was very excited to read about their lives and ministries especially agaist the backdrop of their blatent failures. Piper however, spends more time molding their lives into three preset themes he wishes to discuss then their lives themselves. His chosen themes are Sovereign Joy, Sacred Study, and The Divine Majesty of the Word.

This book is certainly not a biography (something that is tipped off by its 150 pages of large type) but is interesting if you wish to read about all of the aformentioned ideas. It certainly is a quick read and worth the edification. I would reccommend though that after this book you read some of the men themselves to get a fuller picture of their lives and more importantly, how they display God's glory.

Avoid the cycle of imitation, intimidation, and resignation.
Most reviewers have hit upon the highlights of this book. I do not feel the need to repeat it.

This book is a set of mini-biographies of the lives of three flawed saints. I emphasize the word "flawed" because one of the things I appreciated most about this book was how it emphasized each man's weaknesses and sin. These were flawed saints. There is no saint who is not flawed. When it comes to heroes, there is an easy downward slip from the desire for imitation to the discouragement of intimidation to the deadness of resignation. Seeing their weaknesses and how God's grace triumphed in them is to see Christ's strength perfected in weakness.

And seeing how they sang of their sovereign joy of God in the midst of incredible opposition both from the world and their sin gives me hope; for I am flawed, I am imperfect, and I struggle with sin. But oh, I sing for my Sovereign Joy! There is hope in these pages that even men of God sin, but God pulls them out of the mirey clay as an example of His grace, not their greatness.

While I wish Piper could have gone a little bit deeper, I found in his book enough to meditate upon, and a spark has ignited a desire to learn more about these men in order to see their God, their Sovereign Joy.

The Cricket Chirps, The Swan is Silent
John Piper's series of biographies, The Swans Are Not Silent, of which this is the first book, is so named for multiple reasons that come out in the preface. When Augustine was handing over his administrative duties to an assistant named Eraclius, Eraclius was asked to give a message. As Augustine sat silently on the bishops throne behind, Eraclius said, "The cricket chirps, the swan is silent." This is how I feel looking at the way that God has impacted men like Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Edwards, Owen, and even Piper. Being motivated by the grace that God has shown them in their lives and learning from their lessons, as I go out to the world with the motive of Paul that is seen in so many of these great men in history, "Him we declare, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom so that we may present everyone mature in Christ (Colossians 1:28 ESV)," my words feel like the chirps of crickets next to the songs of these gifted swans. Sometimes, one of the best ways to let their songs be sung is to let them sing them for themselves through the words that they wrote and the testimony that they left. That is what John Piper has done in this book, and it has definitely had its desired effect.

Classic Storytelling
I have grown up watching Disney's Alice in Wonderland, and knowing what liberties Disney is known to take in their movies, I wanted to read the original story for myself.

And I'm glad I did. Lewis Carol was such a wonderful storyteller, full of imagination and creative use of the English language.

This was two stories in one. The first, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, I thought had more imagination and he action seemed to flow faster with more scenes and challenges for Alice to deal with. The characters are fantastic and highly imaginative.

The second story, Through the Looking Glass, also had a lot of imagination, but it didn't seem to have as fast a pace as the first book. Still, I found it fascinating as the story was done as if Alice were a chess piece moving across a chess board to reach the other side as a pawn to become a queen. As she moved up the chess board, she encountered different characters and situations.

Highly recommended, even if it was written as a child's book.

THE BEST BOOK EVER!!
I think this book is very imaginative and fun to read. In the first part where she's in Wonderland she goes through a world of nonsense and is trying to find a way out. In Through the Looking Glass she goes through a mirror into a backwards world. I would encourage anyone to read this book because it encourages people to use their imagination and to learn that stuff happens you just have to find the correct way to deal with it.

My favorite character was the Duchess in the first part because she was very annoying and didn't even know it also she has a very comical cook who's obsessed with pepper. My favorite part of the book was when Alice met the Mad Hatter and the March Hare at their tea party.

Alice in Wonderland- once scared me, now is cool
My mom first read this book to me when I was seven years old. Because I was only in first or second grade, Alice in Wonderland scared the heck out of me. I remember parts were pretty horrific and confusing. I kind of hated it. It was like Stephen King for a first grader- which, if you ever go to a website on Lewis Carroll, shouldn't surprise anyone because Carroll had loads of problems and was pretty much tripped out while writing this (I think).
Now that I'm older, I decided to re-read Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. While reading it, it's hard to decide whether this is just a load of imaginative creativity, or a metaphor of something deeper that is true in society today, or true in the 1800's. Well, I guess you can read it either way- but there is definitely some deep stuff in here. Many poems will stop and make you think, and as the story progresses you can't help but feel like you are Alice (which is pretty amazing, because this isn't like Lord of the Rings or anything, it's basically a fairy tale on drugs).
Definitely, definitely, definitely do not hesitate to pick this book up and read. Another review said it was disturbing- well, in some ways it really is. But the characters and the plot line (or lack of!) keep you interested and keeps you reading. AIW and TTLG are must-haves in anyone interested in fantasy/sci-fi, along with Chronicles of Narnia and other great classics.

WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE U. S. NAVY....
Are you seeking a book with a panoramic sweep of American History? Do you wish to view it through the prism of perhaps the most tradition-bound institution in the United States? Do you want to witness the great battles that changed history and altered the map of the world? Do you want to see proud families clash? Behold Admirals' egos? Eavesdrop on the great personalities who have strutted history's stage? Then William Martin's sprawling ANNAPOLIS is for you! It's an almost 800 the page epic you'll be sorry to finish. A work, I think you'll agree, begging to be a mini-series.
William Martin is a wonderful storyteller and Historian who brings life and breath - and breadth - to the people and events that propel his story....our story! Most of the historical moments you'll recognize. Others will be new, and some will be revelations; but all of them are more interesting in his telling! From the battles waged by the U. S. S. Constitution to the sparring of the Monitor and Merrimack. From Midway to the rivers of Vietnam, Martin's U. S Navy - and his Stafford family - help shape and protect America. In light of recent dark days in our history, this story is more relevant than ever. It's a 5 star effort from a 5 star talent.
Pick up this book! Keep your 'eyes in the boat,' and before long you'll understand why what's good for the U. S. Navy is good for the United States of America!

Haunting History
Annapolis was my first William Martin book. I have since read everything except the out of print "The Rising of the Moon". Growing up just miles from Annapolis, the title drew me in while I was looking for a casual read. Boy was I wrong. From the beginning I was enraptured with the history of the US Navy and the people who made it the greatest force afloat. His familiar style of telling a history now and then until the complete historical fabric is woven is an entertaining vehihcle that maintains the relevance of the material. For Martin, history is more than a collection of dates. It lives and he breathes life into it for his readers.

The sequence in the South Pacific haunts me even now two years after reading the novel. Martin ably carries on the traditon of historical story telling from Michener. He has demonstrated the ability to paint on the large canvas (Annapolis), the small canvas (Cape Cod) and the personal canvas (Citizen Washington).

I look forward to learning more about my country and its heroes great and small from Martin in the future.

I loved this book and recommend it as a must read. Books like this should be mandated in schools however the stark nature of reality would keep this book out of curricula. Instead, students will continue to learn fabled accounts of how America came to be. It would be so much better if children were taught that some fairly ordinary people with faults like us came together and became something extrordinary. This is what Martin does best.

INTERVIEW ANSWERS- PAY NEGOTIATIONS-SPECIFIC ADVICE!
This book would be a bargain at 10 times the price. It gave my husband the details and resources he needed to conduct an effective job search in the shortest time possible. Further, it gave him the tools he needed to negotiate a better salary.

I had spent 6 weeks on-line some 6 hours a day looking at hundreds of ads and sending out over a hundred resumes after my husband was unexpectedly terminated from his job. It wasn't until I read Martin Yate's book that I discovered why the resumes were going unanswered. Using Mr. Yate's advice, we revamped everything. Four weeks later my husband had an offer. A good offer.

When the offer came he was ready to negotiate, something he would have never dreamed of doing without reading (over and over again) Mr. Yate's how-to's on the art of salary negotiation. Feeling confident (and armed with a cheat sheet), he negotiated additional salary and benefits to the tune of an additional $25,000 a year. No exaggeration. No kidding.

If you're looking for help landing a job, READ THIS BOOK FIRST!

IT'S THE BEST $$$ I'VE EVER SPENT
I bought this book along with the "Knock 'Em Dead Resume" by the same author and two weeks later I had two job offers for major companies in Northwest. I have been trying to get jobs with these employers for almost 7 months and after using the advice in Yate's book - I finally landed great jobs. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for new jobs or changing career. After all if I can do it anyone can because I am 8 months pregnant and with help of this book I am looking forward to having a great career and becoming a mom.

excellent resource
A friend loaned me this book a week before I had three interviews to go to. It has helped me immensely. It teaches you to read the interviewer in order to see what answers they are looking for from you. I was well qualified for each of the jobs I was interviewing for, but so are a lot of other people. I applied some of the techniques I read in the book and was offered all three jobs. In fact, I was stuck on one question that an interviewer asked me, then the answer the book gave me came to mind, I used it and the interviewer looked at me and said "that's a very good question; that is exactly the answer I was looking for". I only got halfway through the book before the interviews, but it was invaluable to me. I came to this site to purchase a copy for myself and two of my friends and was dissappointed to see that it is not currently in print. I would recommend it to anyone (who can find a copy), even if you are not interviewing. It has lots of tips that will help you have the attitude needed to move forward in today's business world.

Not totally accurate
My mother and I purchased this book and were sorely disappointed.

This book is *not* recommended ... and especially not for vegetarians. Martin and Gerstung (the authors) believe that "substituting soy for milk, cheese, and meat can block the absorption of important nutrients." As though that is not already absurd, the authors go on to state that soy milk is "lacking in needed natural vitamins and cholesterol." Needed cholesterol??? That statement is simply outrageous. The truth is that not only do most people have enough (or even too much) cholesterol in their bodies already, but the human body *manufactures* all the cholesterol it needs. Cholesterol is found in nearly all animal-derived foods, and is absent from all plant-based foods. The consumption of cholesterol is neither necessary nor beneficial for good health.

My recommendation? Try out a book by Dr. Andrew Weil or Dr. Dean Ornish for more accurate information.

It's your hormones
This book is one of my most shared title's to understanding your body and your hormone balance.

Martin included contributions by doctors, M.D. or PhD, who have done the research and clinical work to prove this book is on topic and more helpful than the majority of 'women's books' out there, including a popular female M.D. I get the feeling she doesn't know the difference between natural and synthetic progesterones...which don't have the same effects...and the synthetic has nasty side effects.

When your hormones are balanced you don't need meditation, and you discover your 'toxic' relationships that contribute to your hormone imbalance are easier to 'detoxify.' When you feel good, those around you feel better too.

A good starter book for someone who is now experiencing female 'problems' and wants a real answer instead of useless medicating and surgery. Don't miss checking out constributors, Dr. Peat and Dr. Lee's personal websites. In that order.

InnerSelf.com review
As more and more people become aware of the dangers of synthetic hormone replacement therapy, they turn to alternative health and natural remedies for solutions. Raquel Martin's revised and expanded edition of her book "The Estrogen Alternative" takes these concerns to heart and offers practical solutions for women whether it be for menstrual cramps and PMS, menopause, or just plain feeling "sick and tired".

The author speaks from experience and years of being immersed in the findings of natural hormone research. The information she presents is based on studies by MD's, as well other noted authorities. She also lists resources to assist women in correcting deficiencies that occur before, during, and after menopause, using natural means and botanical hormone replacement therapy.

The book takes a look at circumventing osteoporosis, the risk of cancer, progesterone deficiency, estrogen, hormones from food sources, anemia, cholesterol, miscarriages, and more.

It's a woman's "mini-bible" as it addresses most of the concerns for the health of our body as women -- synthetic vs. natural; breast cancer; menopause; and various other "female-related" physical challenges.

The appendix section offers addresses for sources of natural progesterone, a recommended reading list, resources for cancer patients, and ways (and comparisons) in applying hormones.

The Estrogen Alternative is a very informative book, helping to give women back the power to make their own decisions without having to depend on a medical doctor to impose decisions that may not be in keeping with the woman's way of life. It's a great book for you as a woman, and it's a great book to give to the women in your life. Power is in knowledge and this book presents a lot of both.

Good start
As all other books start off, you'll start with a project and more elements are slowly added in as you go thru each chapter. Of course there's the usual side notes, explaining certain tips, concepts and more advanced features. It starts off with the basic controls, but doesn't get carried off by explaining every single one, which can be good or bad in a way.

The book goes with idea that if you know some of the controls, you can figure out the rest. After dealing with various multimedia features of Director, it finally reaches the Lingo language, but rather than explain the basic semantics, its starts quickly with functions and procedures which hopefully can be figured out later.

If being proficient in Director is what you aim to be, then this book is definitely a good buy. But if you're more into average projects with decent animations, and yet can't be bothered reading too much or knowing too much too early, then you'll be better off with the Visual Quickstart book. I found that after covering more than half the book and finally reaching the Lingo chapters, I stopped coz I felt I didn't need to know all that unless I was doing hardcore projects. Besides, its also cheaper than other books which are just as THICK.

Clear, practical guide to Director 7
I turned to this book after making the mistake of buying Lingo Sorcery to learn object-oriented programming in Director. It was a great relief to find (at last) a coherent introduction to OOP in Lingo, with lots of examples in the text and code on the CD. The rest of the book is terrific, too.

I reach for this book whenever I code myself into a corner.
When I began reading this book, I had been a user of Director for about three years. While my experience producing multimedia CD-ROMs using Director had been good, it always took forever to work out the bugs in my Lingo code. I knew there was a better way to write the Lingo scripts using object-oriented programming techniques, but I didn't understand the concepts or how to do it very well. I was also reluctant to change from my tried-and-true style of programming that had worked for me since beginning with Director 3.

I'd read other books about Director and tried a few things to push my personal envelope, without a lot of success. But as I began to read in this book about how to use OOP structures in behaviors, it was like a light turned on. This book made it very understandable. I kept (figuratively) slapping my forehead and saying "of course!" as I tried the examples in the chapters. I can't remember the last time I've become so excited about learning something new as I have with this book. It has really empowered me to become a better multimedia developer. With the new understanding this book gave me, I'm more confident that I can build any interface feature I want into my Director projects. Before, when a client would ask for some feature, I would be hesitant to agree or promise it. Now I don't have to "kludge" things together...and I can implement it fast and with high reliability so that works consistently in cross-platform projects. My turn-around time on projects is also a lot faster now.

for the generic job huntress
This book is for somebody looking for a job in Corporate America. I also suspect that this book was meant to be read alongside the rest of the Knock 'Em Dead series, which I will admit to not having read. There is a lot of helpful advice on interview tactics and negotiating, but the chapters on job hunting (what to do?) and selling yourself on paper (resume!) are thin and sparsely detailed. However, this would probably be a stellar book for somebody well-versed in resume construction who knows what job she wants, but has difficulty with phone calls and interviews.

Excellent interviewing resource
This is an excellent book. I found it after losing a job in 1993 and it completely turned my interviewee skills around. I have returned to it and referred others to it ever since. I have received an offer from every job applied for since first reading it. It provides comprehensive advice including preparation, professionalism, appearance, technique, communication, confidence, body language, mistakes, intro/cover letters, follow-up/thank-you letters and calls, questions to ask and/or defer, and how to separate and distance yourself from other interviewees. It also contains helpful advice for proactively recognizing potentially poor employers and/or interviewers (based on bad or illegal interview questions.) It may have some "b.s.-ish" suggested responses, but the author notes such as general guidelines and recommends paraphrasing such in one's own style and demeanor. A must-have for any professional's library.

Quite helpful for serious job seekers
This book impressed me with the variety of helpful tips and techniques provided to the job hunter. Martin Yate is a pro and shows it in this strong guide to more effective interviewing. I recommend it.
