Good collection
I am currently using this book in my college course on Medieval philosophy, which is very interesting. The book is divided up by the major issues of Medieval philosophy, and is put in good reading order. For example, the editor will put selections from Aristotle and Plato at the beginning of a section, and follows that with Augustine's text. The editor sees that you view things in a progressive order. There are good notes to help guide through the thick reading, including a glossary of Medieval terms in the back. The text is almost completely primary sources. This is a good text to use if you have someone to explain Medieval philosophy.

Best compendium of medieval thought
This is the best book on medieval thought out there. Most importantly, the editors organized it by topic, which means that the first few readings are from Aristotle, followed chronologically by the Christian and Arabic commentators. This is the best approach, because you can understand the development of the argument, and often the selections are direct responses to the other authors. This is much better than a "greatest hits" or "representative selections" approach, and including Aristotle, even though he is not a medieval, is an enormous advantage. The inclusion of large selections from Arab medievals is valuable, although I generally find them much harder going. The inclusion of minor but widely read commentators such as Porphry is also valuable. As someone with limited familiarity with medieval philosophy, the selections were very helpful. The inclusion of authors that are not strictly philosophical in the contemporary sense, such as the pseudo-Dionysus, is also a good move by the editors. Well worth the money.

A special book: informative, elegant, and well illustrated
I recently purchased this book at a local Brioni clothing dealer, and I've been pleased with its content. The book is brief, but this is such a specialized topic that it is abundant enough.

The book starts with a historic narration of flowers in men's clothing, moves on, to more recent well-dressed men that wear them, and then to examples of elegant more modern combinations that include the use of boutonnieres.

This is not a "picture book" only, it includes essays on the topics that are well written and inspire the reader to become an impeccable dresser, and this is what Brioni is all about.

A Sense of Style
The Boutonniere Style in One's Lapel is a great book. It is lovely just to page through. It is interesting to read . And it looks great just laying around the apartment. There are so many great pictures of famous people, stars and royality, all wearing a boutonniere. You seldom see boutonnieres any more and that's a pity. Such a small addition to the clothes a man wears but such a great fashion plus. This book helps you appreciate the boutonniere.

A Great Book
Although I did not purchase this book, I checked it out for a project I was doing in History class. This book contains hundreds of pictures, along with them there are details on the history of them. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in fashion and in need of a book for a project!

An excellent overview of 1760-1990
This weighty book is a wonderful source of primary research-- paintings, drawings, period designs & photographs, even political cartoons of the time. Unmarred by drawings-of-paintings or other unhelpful secondhand images, it details Western European and American fashions, with a well-written emphasis on the connections to status, politics, & other issues of the day.

While you understandably won't see exhaustive material devoted to each of the 230 years, the coverage is consistent and connectable. There are also substantial forays into fun things like Zoot Suits & pinstriped gangster chic, yet there's room for esoterica; buttoning up one's gloves to indicate anger fashionably, why striped shirts were low-class & shirt ruffles were not, & the late-Victorian way of exhibiting a gentlemanly manner (gently wrinkled clothing, little signs of wear, & a stammer!)

Rather touchingly, it also shows that nothing is truly new under the sun...did you know that bell-bottoms, called "Oxford bags", were a hot look in 1925?

This is a great depiction of men's fashion evolution, broad without being simple.

Cute in a series of cute
All of the "If you see a..." Tiger, Cow, Mouse books are very cute. My two year old likes to "read" them himself. The flaps are easily opened by youngsters. Love them all.

The Joy of Imitation
My son (age 1.5) picks this book (and the other three titles in the series) off his book shelf--even when reading is not quite his favorite thing to do. Now, when we go to the zoo and see an animal described in this series, he will make the corresponding noise or do the action. ("If you see a giraffe, LAUGH!"--and he will, from memory, even when we haven't read the book in awhile!)

Good Buy
I found this book to be very informative, with reasonably good pictures, although with the info supplied about the Oldenburg Regiment and the pictures it was displaying, I would have preferred to have had a little bit more detail. Over-all this still is a good buy for anybody studying France's allies or for anybody needing info for painting figures as I do.

Superb
If either of these two armies interests you, this book is a must have. The color plates are excellent, and so are the army and uniform descriptions. A must have for wargamers and enthusiasts alike.

I love this book, but I was looking for the hard jacket, and could only find softcover.

Excellent Evaluation of King's Preaching & Theology
One can easily see why this book was awarded the Outstanding Book of 1995 by the Religious Speech Communication Assoc., it is so well written. The research appears exhaustive, the writer is is firm touch with his subject matter, having poured over sermon manuscripts and listened to tape after tape, and conducted interview upon interview.

One is able to grasp the essence of King's preaching from this reading. Long suspecting that King comes out of the liberal element in the church, this confirmed that suspiscion. The theology and subsequent preaching is far from what my confession would maintain as Biblical. This is social gospel, theology not from heaven down, but earth up, trying to impose its agenda upon God, rather than letting His word and plan of salvation have its way.

While one can easily relate to the race problems and frustrations with an American that would not listen to the pleas, but an America that responded violently, there remains no cause to make the precious Gospel a political one. Jesus had attempts to preach such freedom from political oppression, but in each and every instance, He maintained the gospel at the level it is intended, spiritual.

King thus is out of sync with his namesake, Martin Luther, as well as the historic Christian church. The gospel is about the forgiveness of sins for the life everlasting. As the famous hymn sings: "What is the World to Me?"

This book is vibrant with the complexities of the background and influences on King's theology and preaching. Enjoyed it, yet sad that the title "preacher" is applied to such a false teacher of God's Word. To apply humanity's agenda above and beyond God's is the height of sin and rebellion.

An Excellent Resource!!
A truly excellent resource! This book is full of valuable exercises for challenging the irrational thoughts and avoidance behaviors that fuel social anxiety. I particularly appreciated the creative examples of how one can confront and overcome social and performance fears in a gradual and manageable fashion. Of all of the resources that I've come across to date, this book has been the most helpful to me in terms of offering realistic and practical strategies!

excelent ! readable ,interesting ,useful !!!
i had been a social phobic for many years and i read a lot of materiaal about this subject. from the behavioral point of veiw this book is the BEST that i had ever read about social anxiety and social phobia. from cognitive point of view this book is o.k. a must-have book for every one that suffer from social anxiety or for therapist that deals with this subject-espesially for the behavioral therapists. there are wonderfull ideas on the book to what to expose yourself. the book is interesting-not just usefull. it is written using simple style. buy it ! buy it ! buy it !!!

Great workbook for those serious about changing
First the book helps you get to know where your major problem areas are by conducting a self-assessment. Next it helps you to change your anxious thoughts such as: "when people look at me, they are thinking I am strange or weird" to a more rational thought like: "most people aren't thinking about me and even if they do they are not likely to think I'm strange". Then, they confront your fears head on through exposure while employing the techniques you've learned. As a person with social anxiety I can tell you exposure treatment is a frightening prospect but it does work. This book holds your hand through it but never coddles you. It's not easy but it is possible to feel better. I use this book between therapy sessions as a kind of crutch or reminder of what I'm suppose to be doing.

Walking a mile in his shoes.
DREAMER held a lot of promise and was a very deep read. The story involves Chaym Smith, who offers himself as a decoy/stand-in to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., because he bears too familiar a resemblence to the good Doctor. Told from the perspectives of Dr. King and one of his aides, Matthew Bishop, the novel took us from marches to meetings involving heads of state to the breakdown of Chaym's personality, which was a complete 360 degrees from that of man he was hired to impersonate. The author was able to structure the personalities of the players involved and made the fictional charaters of Matthew and Chaym convincing and compelling. However, the book was so weighed down with thoughts and agendas that were so complex in context, that it was a little hard to get back on track, especially when you have forgotten where you left off, and you are still reading the book. A good read for those wanting something different and four-dimensional.

Creative look gives insight into King's life
Dreamer by Charles Johnson gives a unique look at the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. By using a fictitious double, who must examine his own life in light of the civil rights era, Johnson allows the reader to see both King and Chaym Smith, the man who would be his stand-in, struggle with issues of nonviolence and its meaning in a violent world. This well-researched novel presents a fresh look at King's life by allowing artistic license to soar while it never clouds the truth. Although some details are the product of the author's imagination, others are well documented among King scholars. The presentation of fact in the environment of creative detail allows a glimpse of King that I have seen nowhere else. The story moves quickly and never digresses into detail that is irrelevant to the narrative, but gives enough pertinent detail to help those unfamiliar with the setting, while convincing those who know more details concerning King's life that the author is also a brilliant scholar. A GOOD READ.

A book with a lot of heart.
Like Faith And The Good Thing, Dreamer works as philosophy and social criticism as well as fiction. Mr. Johnson has the personal courage to eschew trendy thinking and to pull together the truth from all corners of the world, ancient and modern. I like reading him because he tells me the truth; I can trust his judgment. He's incredibly erudite and yet there's no jive in his prose style, no textbook tone, no pretension. It's obvious thatl he's learned a few things while becoming a man and isn't afraid to show it. He demonstrates admirably that "rapping" needn't be doggerel. Kudos! Long live Martin Luther King!

You'll pass, but you won't be a master...
This book will help you pass the exam if you are diligent and already fairly VB-savvy. On the bright side, it does cover all of the exam material. However, many topics are covered at a VERY shallow level or are discussed in confusing terms. Worse still, other areas seem to have been written by someone who had read Microsoft documentation but hadn't actually taken the time to understand what they had read or to test out the stated concepts thoroughly. Particularly obnoxious is Chapter 12. The author is clearly way out of his/her depth when it comes to designing and implementing COM components. The lab exercise to implement a callback procedure for asynchronous processing is laughable, as the steps it leads you through never kick off an asynchronous process (clearly showing that the author doesn't really understand what asynchronous processing is). The author thinks that because the windows message queue remains responsive, it proves that asynchronous processing is being used. Oops, sorry, wrong answer.

If it's important to you to really explore these concepts and learn something useful, supplement your use of this book. If there is anything that you read here that seems contradictory, or unclear, or is just plain new to you -- pull up keywords in the MSDN library and go to town. Get hands on to try things out in VB if something in the Hawhee sounds fishy or if you've never had real-world experience with a particular concept. Get the Appleman book for a reference on the Win32 API(you should have it anyway). Take a look at the Pattison book (Programming Distributed Applications with COM and VB6) for information on COM and how VB fits in. These two books will serve you well as references for a long time.

If you just want to pass the exam, and don't care about actually understanding and being able to apply the information that you're being tested on, just buy this book. You'll probably slide by, even if you have to give it a couple of tries. Just please don't ever come work for my company -- I'm positive I wouldn't enjoy working with you.

This Book + Transcender + Online Help = Success!
I decided to buy this book because of the high ratings in this site and is pleased to report that this is the best book I've seen that covers both exam 70-028 and 70-029. Make sure to do all the exercises at the end of each chapter to have a hands-on experience of the concepts being taught. Exam questions at the end of each chapter also makes you retain more of what you've read so make sure you go through those too. Although this book is by no means complete, gaps could be filled in by searching some of the topics it missed using the product's online help. Specially lacking is its Package and Deployment chapter. The accompanying CD gives you some feel on what it is like to take the exam but Transcender comes closer to the real thing than the software packaged with this book. Errors in the text and the exercises could sometimes fluster you but a quick trip to the publishers website for the latest errata for this book could help you catch the more obvious mistakes.

Overall, this book is a valuable resource for the exam and as a handy reference even after the exam.

Excellent
This is a very good book. Unlike so many other exam prep books, the authors display a deep understanding of VB and computing in general. You get help in passing the VB exams PLUS a deeper understanding of the subject itself. You can tell that the authors are interested in helping you become a better programmer and they have a lot to offer in the furtherance of that cause. Also, the material is presented in a comprehensive way. After you pass the tests, you will want to keep this book on the shelf as a reference. (There are a few errors. If you read carefully, you will spot them.) Here is something that I learned: the reviews that Amazon publishes are a goldmine of information. Getting past Microsoft certification is an important and difficult mission and if you embark on it with an inferior study guide, things are going to be rough: tear stains on your mouse pad -- deep teeth marks on the book itself. I found this excellent book by reading the Amazon reviews and I will never buy another computer book again without reading them first.

Excellent for learning syntax
I have a couple of Maths degrees and a professional IT background with a lot of Assembler coding (IBM mainframe) and wanted a book which would teach me C++ syntax quickly and without talking to me as though I had 3 brain cells. This met my needs perfectly. I found it clear, logical and easy to read, and the exercises brought out the points raised in the text. If you don't have a bit of Maths/IT background, this is probably not the right book for you, but for someone in the field wanting to learn the language with a minimum of fuss, it's great.

This book is the best
I learned C++ programming in five weeks just with this book. I got A+ in class. Those reviewers who have negative reviews on this book, is becuase they do not have programming skills or good math, Java, and C background.

I recomend this book for these who have previous experience in programming and want to learn C++ independently.

One of the few C++ books that actually helped me
I found this book well-written and illustrated. The person below who complained about the mathematical problem should probably reconsider programming if he/she doesn't understand the most basic summation notation. Anyone who has had the appropriate mathematics background to become a programmer will easily understand this book.
