Semiotics and Linguistic Structure: A Primer of Philosophic Logic
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (1978)

A great text by a master logician
Richard Martin (1916-85) is a seriously undervalued American philosopher. He was a superbly clear writer, better even than Quine. He was a fan of C S Peirce and of Peirce's semiotic theory. If there is such a thing as a turgid or gloomy Peircian, I have yet to discover such.

This book is in two parts. The first is a text on logic as seen through Richard Martin's eyes. It alone makes this book worth the price. In his 1941 Yale PhD, Martin discovered the theory of virtual sets and relations. The discussion of this theory in chpts. 1&2 is the best there is. (Quine discovered this theory independently while writing up his 1942 Brazil lectures, but never truly did it justice.) This is followed by an introduction to mereology, a vastly undervalued mathematical theory of the part-whole relation. Martin goes on to develop an event logic, and a theory of semantics (only Carnap himself can rival Martin as a master of formal semantics). Martin sketches out his ideas can be used to ground mathematics as well as linguistics. The result is a brilliant introduction to a number of issues in philosophical logic. Metatheory is not touched on, but arguably that theory is the crowning glory of mathematical logic.

Part II uses the logic of part I to develop a formal theory of linguistics. Martin had been a Penn colleague of Zelig Harris. Chomsky studied under Harris and may have learned some or most of his logic from Martin. Part II is one of the few places you'll see Harris's theories discussed. The mathematical treatment of the preposition is especially intriguing. Martin believed that language and formal logic were more closely related than is generally believed, and this book makes a good case for this.

St.James Fashion Encyclopedia: A survey of style
Not a day goes by that I don't pick up this book! An excellent collection of concise 20th century fashion designer's biographies. Interesting and acurate information arranged in alphabetical order. The information is so good that you forgive the book for not having photographs. Most of our students use the book for research on their favorite designers but, this book is also just a great read.

A warning for human resources directors at all companies!
There are usually two sides to every story. However, as a labor and employment lawyer who represents management, it is difficult for me to see how an investigation into the fact pattern presented by Mr. Martin could have resulted in anything short of an apology and compensation for the egregious conduct of his supervisors and certain co-workers. Of course, when the US Supreme Court opened the door for some clear guidance on same-sex sexual harassment, the victory for Mr. Martin was all but assured. Nonetheless, the book's riveting account of Mr. Martin's courage to stand up to the system, prior to the precedent impact of the Supreme Court's decision, is a reminder to us all that right is right and wrong is simply wrong!

I would encourage corporate America to read and digest the issues which Mr. Martin raises, not only in the isolated same-sex harassment arena, but for an education into the mindset of a tenacious plaintiff who is willing to risk all for the sake of a belief that he was wronged by a company and organization to which he gave his all, and most of a career. This book, then, is a warning and an education for human resources directors at all companies. Such a story of harm and betrayal at the hands of a man's employer may encourage others similarly situated to fight, but if the proper lessons are learned, Mr. Martin's narrative may do well to prevent such from happening!

Sincerely,

The body as play.
Ruben Toledo's work in fashion is suberbly enhanced by his illustration. The sketches are loaded with wonderful forms, complex ideas and metaphor. Style Dictionary is one of the most engaging and imaginative art books I have read, and pushes the idea of fashion beyond the body and into the realm of architecture, theater and pure play. After looking at this book, the body is seen in a whole new way.

Cute when Cubs
"Bears are curiously appealing to man. We like to think of them as wise, friendly, gentle animals, perhaps like grown-up teddy bears. Scientist who have studied them tell another story." Pg. 9

There is hardly anything that will turn me to a piece of melted butter like kittens and bear cubs. I am absolutely captivated when nature shows reveal the cuteness of baby animal life.

Little rolly-polly bears soon grow up into strong and destructive forces which don't enjoy being caged or tethered and can become bored and aggressive. So, cats it will have to be for me. Bears also have uncertain tempers while cats are mostly always friendly.

The following topics each have two pages: The bears and their relations, Giant cave bears, Eurasian brown bears, Siberian brown bears, Grizzly bears, Kodiak bears, Polar bears, Wanderers of the North, Family Life, American black bears, Asian black bears, Sloth bears, Sun bears, Spectacled bears, Giant pandas, Bears and man, Bears at risk and Saving the bears.

Each bear is pictured in its own environment and is given two pages with full-color illustrations.

Fact File - On the left upper corner of the page, shows order, family, Latin name, color, length, height, weight and range.

Interesting Fact - is next on the left hand section below fact file.

In the center of the page, a picture of the bear and information on the actual bear being discussed.

Bear Watching Around The World - a section introducing subjects like:

How bears began, How bears became scarce, Where can we see grizzly bears, Behavior: how bears live together and Bears and Early humans.

Well until I can have a bear as a pet, I'll just stick to sleeping with a teddy bear. ~:>

A must-have reference book
What can one say for this bible of internal medicine ! Excellent algorithms, organised sections about the diseases with precise information are dominant in this book. It's a reference book with the ability to keep you satisfied no matter what you are looking for. If it's not in Harrison's it isn't anywhere !

A MUST BUY for the future Internist
This book is the Bible of Internal Medicine. Anyone considering a career in medicine should have this book in their library. Comprehensive and well written, it is the gold standard of medical textbooks.

Harrison's keeps being an authority in medicine
This book is a medical tradition, and it is as important to doctors as their stethoscope.
It is very complete, there is no doubt about it. Every subject of medicine is covered, and for a reference book is a must-have. It is also written in an easy-to-read way, but some chapters are more difficult to understand than others, and like a good meal, in excess it can get heavy and occasionally become a brick, so slow-reading is advised. Also worth to mention are the atlases, that give a lot of pictographic information.
I would recommend it only as a reference book, because for the USMLE, or as a course textbook, it is impossible to read it all, especially if time is scarce.

The New York City Ballet Workout: Fifty Stretches and Exercises Anyone Can Do for a Strong, Graceful, and Sculpted Body

Motivating and easy to follow
What a wonderful book! I just bought it and I can't wait to get started. I've read it from cover to cover a few times, and I'm more than pleased with my purchase. The magnificent bodies are marvelous and breathtaking. It's true that the first few pages are bios and frou frou, but their stories are inspiring and motivating. Plus, they discuss why dancers' bodies are more agile and sculpted than most athletes, as well as tips on getting started, how to listen to your body and optimize your workout.

The workout is divided into six sections. Warm up and Stretch, followed by Abs (14-20 minutes), Floor barre (12-16 minutes), Ballet center (16-22 minutes) and Legs (16-22 minutes). Although they say you can do the entire workout as time permits, they offer suggestions for 10 or 20 minute workouts, as well as specialized workouts to correlate with specific sports for strength and flexibility or body parts of concentration. The instructions are clear-cut and detailed and along with the music selections they recommend, you'll feel like a prima ballerina. Personally, I have a lot of fat to lose so I plan on using this workout as a supplement to an aerobic regimen. I'm looking forward to using this workout every morning to get my day started.

Finally, exercise you actually WANT to do!
This book is a wonderful way to firm and tone your muscles while achieving a balletic grace. I usually hate workout books or even using exercise machines because the routine seems so pointless. This book, however, gives a purpose to the exercises. It won't make you a professional dancer, or even an amateur one, but you'll feel more graceful and become more flexible.

Before you even start the exercises, you're inspired by the excellent photographs of the beautiful dancers. If you're as out of shape as I am, at first the stretches and exercises seem almost impossible, but after only just a few days they become easier as you regain flexibility and muscle tone. Most importantly, you develop an awareness of your body that stays with you long after you've finished your workout.

This is the best workout program I've ever used. I recommend it especially as a post-partum routine for women who want to regain their pre-pregnancy muscle tone and flexibility.

This will NOT teach you ballet...
What this book WILL do is guide you through an exercise routine that is as challenging and fun as you want to make it.

The exercises are divided into different sections: warm-up, stretches, abdominals, legs, floor barre, and ballet. There are also sample routines in the back of the book for emphasizing different aspects of fitness: endurance, strength, abs, etc.

Each movement is shown step-by-step with written instructions, and almost every one moves your body through motions it is probably not accustomed to doing. After just the 10-minute stretch, I am already feeling energetic and relaxed. The exercises are fun, often quite challenging, and they accomplish what they claim they will.

This book will not make you a ballet dancer ~ one-on-one classes are irreplaceable for that. But using the exercises contained in it will supplement your dancing (or any other activity you're involved with!) by making your body stronger and more graceful.
