The Art of being you came out just after the death of the talented Gianni Versace. I own all of his books which I highly recommend. Different in this installment are the images of modern art which Versace so incorporated into his work. Evident is the work of Julien Schnabel (broken plate painter) and Andy Warhol. The presence of photographer Richard Avedon's work makes the 100$Canadian worth it. If your into fashion especially Versace, check out Vanitas for Gianni's renderings. Nobody does it like Versace. Lets hope his sister continues the same tradition.

This book shows the private art collection that the versace family have collected. Great book with great pictures.

In the world of Art books, This has got to be the best posthumous release ever. Abbeville Press has outdone themselves with this masterpiece. I own Mr. Versace's previous 5 books, Signatures, Vanitas, Do not disturb, Rock and Royalty and Men w/o ties which I highly recommend. In this edition, Versace shows us that until his untimely death, the wheels never stopped turning. With the help of Thierry Perez, Steven Meisel, Julian Schnabel and other fabulous artists, This book truly defines the artifice and uncompromising couturier called Gianni Versace.

Heidegger's `Introduction to Metaphysics' was banned in Germany until the early 1950s. Why? Some aspects of Heidegger's rhetoric, and certain passages, e.g., "The greatness of National Socialism ... ", lended themselves to Nazism. Written in the 1930s, `An Introduction to Metaphysics' maintains Heidegger's muddled and still unclear association with Nazism regarding his philosophy. His membership in the party still casts a long and many would say daming shadow over his philosophy. However, this work is still fascinating and, when read with Nazi filters, rewarding because in this work Heidegger introduces many of his preoccupations that will dominate his thinking after his turn (`Kehre'), e.g., truth, metaphysics, etc.. I studied it closely for my thesis and what is problematic is Heidegger's equation of the `power of the polis' with truth-Being. Power-truth siding on the power of the state and not the individual of liberalism is what needs attention. He moves radically away from this in later thinking. Heidegger is no democrat, but whether he is a full blown Nazi is up to the reader to decide. A must read for philosophers and historians of the period.

What a great book. I may of read about 4 to 5 Martin Heidegger books & this book flowed because it was easy to read. Well, the first part of the book was easy, got a little lost in the "Being As Thinking" section. His philosophy, minus the so-called...certain influence, helped me give up my Platonic ways of thinking. Martin Heidegger starts off trying to ask the most basic axiom "Why are there BEINGs at all instead of Nothing" goes through a brief history of the main words, tears the words & main question apart, & puts the words & question back together again. Then he explains how BEING turns into BECOMING (how things change), APPEARANCE (how things influence our senses), THINKING (How & what we think about our experience), & the OUGHT (The way things "Should" or "Could" BE). Basic conclusion: Western Philosophy started out correct with the pre-Platonic philosophers asking what BEING was & then after Plato the debate became about mind over matter while losing the original meaning & questions about BEING (Reality). A Must Read!

This translation is a long overdue revisitation of the first of Heidegger's books to appesar in an English version. This short book is an excellent introduction to Heidegger's thought in the 30s. The 30s were his most "Nietzschean" period, and also his most controversial period, because of his support at the time for the Nazi party. The 30s also acquired something of a legendary status among Heidegger scholars because it was then that he was working on his "Contributions to Philosophy". Otto Poeggeler (privileged with access to Heidegger's manuscripts) had been saying for years that the "Beitraege" was Heidegger's most important work, which made many people naturally curious about this work. When it finally appeared (in 1989, an English translation appeared in 2000) it proved to be as daunting a text as "Being and Time". The "Introduction to Metaphysics" dates from the same time, and could well be thought of as a companion piece to the much more challenging "Contributions to Philosophy."

An excellent visual coverage of the controversial exhibition of Young British Artists. Includes a few essays at the beginning of the book, and a few photo examples of each artists work. I would have liked a bit more information on the artists, under each of their names for easier reference. Overall an excellent catalogue of one of the best exhibitions of the decade. Artists included are Jake and Dinos Chapman, Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin.

Great piccies...plenty of authority types spouting about art...a key catalogue on yBa's...especially recommended for art students desperately seeking quotes from the stuffed shirts of art, on Saatchi's girls and guys...don't get hung up on the media controversy...it's only art...it can't bite you...and if you don't get it, then 'Sod You Gits!'...as Sarah Lucas says.

It is a good book, but not great as his another one: Rock and Royalty, Versace/Avedon. If you are a fan of Versace, then it's worth to buy one.

If you're a female (or well, at least a gay), better brace yourself and get ready for a glossy, eye-filling page after page of the finest young men ever born and bred in the whole world! Those sexy studs are very artfully depicted here in a stylish vein by a very creative fashion designer like Gianni Versace and most of them are quite scantily-clad and some of them even completely naked. A very bold and unconventional piece of art that you can find on any coffee table! Too bad this handsome album is just plain too expensive for me to merely pluck right off a bookstore shelf!

Okay, the males are stylish and handsome both--possessed of muscles, adorned with Versace's jubilant, expressionistic attire. But there's more expressionism in the photos themselves. I know of no other book where visual images (here, photos) are not just presented 1-2-3 in static procession, but where portions are repeated--echoed later on--blended with following photos--in a creative interweaving which can only be "art" in the definition of "dynamic combination of symmetry or order, and asymmetry or tension." A beach scene appears, then is blended with another scene later. And interblended with the written text, too. Rare is this twin-starring of word and image, plus this permutation-and-combination of images. Only in comics do word and image so vitally interact. So check out this book for its design-artistry, as well as its aesthetic dudes.....

This is a must read for any admirer of all those great television variety shows, as well as the many fans of Rat Packer Dean Martin. The ONLY book written by anyone who EVEN MET Dean Martin, author Lee Hale spent nearly two decades with him as musical director and later his producer. Aptly titled, "Backstage at the Dean Martin Show" is an exciting and loving inside look behind the scenes documenting this great top ten show and its star, with fascinating anecdotes of the biggest names in the business. I caught myself laughing out loud, then I would turn a page and be totally blown away by something that I didn't expect.

Mr. Hale divides his book into one chapter for each TV season, with extra ones going beyond to 'The Golddiggers', 'The Roasts' and 'The Specials', with over 200 color and b&w photos of great stars, most never before seen. The index itself lists hundreds of celebrities from Hank Aaron to Ed Wynn.

As chairman of the current 'Dean Martin Fan Center', and someone who was actually there at NBC during those golden years, I was lucky to have a firsthand look at the Dean Martin Show phenomenon, but Lee Hale uses a magnifying lens... and no one can get closer than this! It is truly a wonderful story from the bizaare beginnings to the touching end. I can't say enough!

Lee Hale lived, breathed, and helped run the Dean Martin Show for its duration, even when the variety show was no more, replaced by the Dean Martin Roasts. Lee actually played Dino during rehearsals, so got to meet and know all of the stars that guested on his show. If you loved the show, as I did growing up, you will be fascinated by this inside look (Dino's wife Jeannie loved it, as she knew nothing about it either! )into one of the most successful variety shows of all history. A warning, however, is: don't expect to learn a lot about Dino; his manager didn't let Lee (or anyone else) get especially close to him, just small talk from time to time; the only extraordinary insight from Lee regarding Dino was that YES, that WAS scotch in his glass! Actually, Lee, an observant man, made several interesting observations of this legenday performer as he drifted away from his wife and pursued what can only be describecd as a mid-life crisis, "Rat Pack Style", which in the end, he seemed to highly regret. To wrap it up, the book was a lot of fun, its a good read; its chock full of photos of the likes of Duke Wayne, Orson Welles, etc, so you can't lose! Give it a try!

"Backstage at the Dean Martin Show" is a body of work with three bloodlines...

TV variety shows,talented stars, and Dean Martin. If you are a fan of any three, you will find how they mixed together through the 'heart' of the "Dean Martin Show", with the 'eyes and ears' of Lee Hale, musical director-turned-producer.

Starting his internship with the credit "Special Musical Material By...", Mr. Hale was responsible for every note that was heard on the series. He was also the one responsible for choosing every girl that provided the'skin' (Deanís Golddiggers and Dingaling Sisters), and later utilized his 'hands' at editing, which won Mr. Hale an Emmy nomination (one of many).

The 'guts' of the Dean Martin show had a lot of vital parts, and Mr. Hale tells us which ones were kept and which were operated on or replaced. Of course,the heart of the book is in the soul of Dean Martin, the body whom Lee Hale also stood in for six days a week, dancing, singing and joking with EVERY guest star that was admitted through those star crossed doors at NBC.

The whole operation was a phenomenal success and now you can see the itemized bill... from who was admitted, who paid their dues, to the life support and what led to everyone finally being discharged.

This book won't be in anyone's waiting room... it will always be in someone's hands reading it!

I was quite impressed by this book. I had a little knowledge of C before using it (came from a COBOL and VB background), and to be fair it was the text used for a 1-week course in C, so I didn't really learn my C from it, but it was a very good accompaniment to the lectures.

As an applications developer, mostly with business info systems, the examples were not quite right for me. They were oriented towards the researchers and mathematicians out there, but the title happens to mention that doesn't it. That minor gripe aside, the book contains a lot of general C information to an intermediate/advanced level.

Well recommended for people cross-training from other structured languages and those learning to program for the first time. It is also a handy reference for those less experienced C programmers like me.

this book is good. what can i say. the author is clear and to the point. its the only book i've ever used that has an appendix of functions and there protoypes. and a short very handy description of each function. Its the best reference i've ever used and when it comes to programming i'd say reference is what is most useful not someone babbling on and on...

This book contains a very solid, organized and alltogether high quality presentation of the C programming language. It begins with the fundamentals and progresses to advanced levels. The explanations are clear and thorough using attractive diagrams in color, all the while maintaining a scientific context. It is the best book I have ever seen on this subject and I recommend it very highly.

One wouldn't suppose that a kidnapping tale could be funny. Well, it wasn't a roll on the floor laugh-fest, but this novel did offer plenty of head-nods to irony. Suzie Q, the luckless kidnapping victim is fresh and clever and has a wry sense of humor about her. While gagged, tied up, and freezing to death she still has plenty of Irish pluck. Suspenseful and interesting, ironic and frightening, this book is wonderfully done and a pleasure to read!

I really enjoy this book it kept me on the egde of my seat the whole time I was reading it. I really thaught that Suzie Q. was ganna escape on Gerards motorcycle. I think that she could have gottin' away on his motorcycle. I like the way the book ended with her getting rescued and Dodie going to jail. I hope you enjoyed my review

I love mysterys most of the ones I read are more like thrillers I didn't know what to epect when I picked up Suzie Q all I know is that I couldn't put it down. It's a great book

We are working on our 2nd kitchen remodel and found this book just too basic which means it might be right as a basic book for a first timer. Just a few kitchens were used to illustrate principles and I would have liked to see a larger portfolio represented. "Great Kitchens, At Home with America's Top Chefs" had the ideas that I was looking for.

Before I purchased this book, I read the other reviews and I am so glad I did! I have purchased loads of books, magazines...anything "kitchen" and found this to be the most informative. Everything that isn't covered in the others IS covered in this. This is the only book you need, if you just want to look at ideas, or if you really want to KNOW what you need actually need to know. All I can say is...you need this book if you want to be informed about a new kitchen!!!!!

There are so many kitchen design books on the market. If you want the best one, buy this. Why? Because it forces you to think about how you want to function in your kitchen before you even begin to select cabinets, appliances, fixtures and fittings. What good does it do you to install attractive features like professional ranges and refrigerators, expensive cabinetry and lighting if, in the end, you have to walk clear across too long an area to get from your refrigerator to your sink? This book guides you to examine how you work in your kitchen, e.g., whether one or two people cook, whether you entertain, whether you have special needs for children, etc. There is a great section that teaches you about the hidden systems in your walls, like plumbing and electrical, in a way you can understand, so you can be informed about these hidden elements and aren't a total dummy when talking to your contractor and when determining whether what needs to get done as far as plumbing and electrical work is in fact being done. Might prevent the old "being taken to the cleaners" problems we've all experienced as, say, when dealing with auto mechanics. The section on construction scheduling and contractors is invaluable. The chapter entitled "Designing with the Physical Space" is terrific. This book is worth every penny and probably a lot more in terms of making yourself aware of all aspects of your kitchen remodeling project, what you want and what you don't want in terms of the functionality of your finished kitchen. As it is an expensive remodeling project to undertake, it seems worthwhile to make yourself as knowledgeable as possible. After reading this book and knowing I have it as a reference, the task of remodeling the kitchen seems much less overwhelming.

After reading the main part of the book, I am so grateful for having bought this book. I have been extremely depressed because of my excessive high standards toward myself. This book acts as a mirror to my problems and I can see my perfectionistic tendencies in many aspects. I also try to work through the techniques suggested by the authors to overcome my perfectionistic thoughts and behavior. I cannot say that I have eliminated all such problems but I can see I am on the right track! I am now more aware of my fear and anxiety since most of them orginated from my perfectionism.

My piano playing skills are improved after using the practices the book put forward.

The authors show their true understanding of the dilemma of the perfectionists and could design workable and practical methods to overcome the problems.

For anyone who are troubled by their perfectionism (I guess some are even not aware that they are perfectionist), this books will help. Clear, live and simple examples are given to illustrate what are truly "perfectionistic" which give rise problems.

I highly recommend this book.

I worked through this book nine months ago and have since enjoyed the most productive, creative, and calmest nine months of my career. I thought the first part, Understanding Perfectionism, would be a waste of time, but it helped me to realize I had perfectionist tendencies in several areas of my life.

The second and third parts present methods to assess and overcome perfectionism. The methods are specific and numerous; you are led to select those that are most applicable to your situation. I have been amazed at how well the book targeted my problems and at how much this book has helped.

I highly recommend Antony and Swinson's book for anyone with perfectionist tendencies.

I have been a perfectionist my whole life. At school, at work, in my relationships, even my looks -- I have always tried to be perfect. Needless to say, this takes a lot of time and energy. Everyone is always telling me to relax, but I have never been able to. Antony and Swinson's book is the first thing that I have read that has truly helped. They provided me with strategies that were easy to understand and have really helped me to relax my standards and view things in a more rational way. I still have some rough days and when I do, I pull this book off my shelf and get a refresher on the strategies that I should be using. I will keep this book, and refer to it, for many years to come. Heidegger conducts a brilliant tour of Parmenides' fragments, with boatloads of illuminating detours through nearly all of Greek philosophy and history, and much of Western history as well. His insights into the nature of Greek gods and myth, truth as "un-concealment" or "dis-closure", and the development of human thought are indispensable. At times, however, he takes undue liberties - his interpretation of aidos (shame) as "reverence" is particularly far from the mark. As always, the prose is dense, but worth slogging through.

The official title of this series of lectures is "Parmenides and Heraclitus". Although Heraclitus quickly slips out of the picture, and Heidegger often gets of the track of Parmenides as well, this book offers commanding vistas not only of the pre-Socratics, but also of the question of being, the nature of the Greek gods, and all of Western history. Heidegger's interpretation of truth as "un-concealment" or "dis-closure" is truly mind-opening. A caveat though: Heidegger often takes too many liberties with Greek terms; his explanation of aidos (shame or reverence), for instance, owes more to German peasant mystical Catholicism than to anything Greek.

The "Parmenides and Heraclitus" lecture course of 1942-3 is decisive for understanding the relationship between the Greek experience of truth as a-letheia and Heidegger's exposition of Being in Being and Time (the lecture on Plato's Sophist is equally important). This lecture course also helps to clarify Heidegger's relationship with Nietzsche and is essential for a confrontation with the Nietzsche lectures (sp. Heidegger's characterization of the will to power as the will to will). In addition, although Heidegger rarely mentions Hegel directly, this lecture course enters into an implicit dialogue with Hegel's lectures on the history of philosophy. Heidegger's characterization of history as the "transformation of the essence of truth" is momentous. Incidentally, Liddell-Scott defines aidos as "moral feeling, reverence, awe, respect for the feeling or opinion of others or for one's own conscience, and so shame, self-respect." In fact in the detailed analysis it goes so far as to say "personified, Reverence, Pi.O.7.44," that is, it specifically defines the "aidos" mentioned by Heidegger in the 7th Olympian Ode as the personification of reverence. Undermining Heidegger's so-called linguistic analysis/exegesis on the basis of his affiliation with Nazism or Catholocism is a sign of the refusal to take Heidegger's comments to heart.
