Unfairly Ignored
Outside of Virginia and graduate writing programs, where he is treated as a minor deity, Garrett is largely anonymous. This is a shame, since he is among our greatest living writers. I'm especially fond of this book, which explores the South's relationship with its own history in a way that respects and humanizes everyone without abandoning the humor that marks the best of the region's fiction. I do not wish to imply that Garrett is merely a local star. He writes about the South because he is from here, but also because it provides a microcosm of America. Issues of racial identity and religious splintering dominate this nation, and they also dominate this novel.
Garrett is an elegant stylist, a wry and fearless observer and a gifted humorist. This book ought not be discarded--it is the best American novel about America written in the past decade, and it is a shame that it has not crossed over into the mainstream territory of book clubs and high school reading lists.

A totally fascinating literary mystery!
The author writes this novel set in Florida with a combination of vigor and poetry and humor that is very rare and wonderful; his many characters pull you deeper and deeper into this story which flies back and forth a generation to gradually reveal the truth of a 20 year old murder. One extraordinary character after another is born on the page and all together form part of the story. No wonder the author can write such very deep and real Elizabethan books for which he is justly famous.

The luminous thoughts of Martin Heidegger.
MARTIN HEIDEGGER. By George Steiner. 173 pp. University of Chicago Press edition, 1987 (1978). ISBN 0-226-77232-2 (pbk.)

The presence of Heidegger is so insistent that sooner or later we want to find out more about this controversial figure. But where to start? His most famous work, 'Being and Time,' is notoriously unapproachable by the unprepared, but where can we find a really good Introduction to the man and his main ideas? After tackling several well-known Introductory studies, and quickly abandoning them as just too dry and boring, I finally discovered George Steiner's short study.

What a joy it was to read Steiner! I'm one of those compulsive scribblers who always read pencil in hand, ready to annotate significant and memorable passages to make sure I'll be able to find them when I want to return and re-read them, and after a single reading pretty well every page was marked.

Steiner has a beautifully lucid style, and he writes with real passion. After a 28-page Introduction, 'Heidegger: In 1991,' and an 'In Place of a Foreword,' three Chapters follow : 1. 'Some Basic Terms;' 2. 'Being and Time;' 3. 'The Presence of Heidegger.' The book is rounded out with a Biographical Note, a useful Short Bibliography, and an Index.

Steiner throughout shows great skill in actually making us feel the movements of Heidegger's thought as it flows along totally unexpected and amazing paths, and one is left wondering what heights Western thought might have risen to if it had stayed true to its original impulse. It would seem that, for Heidegger, thought was not mere ratiocination, but something more akin to devotion, a devotion we come to share.

Here are a few lines from the book : "We are trying "to listen to the voice of Being"" (p.32); "Art is not, as in Plato and Cartesian realism, an imitation of the real. It is the more real" (p.136); "Creation _should be_ custody; a human construction _should be_ the elicitation and housing of the great springs of being" (p.136); "Man has labored and thought not with but against the grain of things. He has not given lodging to the forces and creatures of the natural world but made them homeless" (p.136); "... the Heideggerian asker lays himself open to that which is being questioned and becomes ... the permeable space of its disclosure" (p.55); "The earth, says Heidegger, must once again be made a _Spielraum_, literally, a space in which to play" (p.149). These are truly luminous thoughts, and the book is full of them.

I'm not sure what specialists may think of this book, but as a non-specialist I found it a very exciting book to read, and one that left me eager to know more. Steiner's study strikes me as what must be one of the best possible introductions to Heidegger for the ordinary reader.

Heidegger by Steiner
Prof. Steiner's beautiful and precise prose clarifies the fundamental aspects of Heidegger's philosophy. Compared with similar introductions to the philosopher, Steiner's is particularly insightful and a pleasure to read by itself: the work is full of "sentences that arrest the spirit".

A must for power systems students
Comprehensive and lucid... this book presents all of the most important subjects in modern power electronics and electric power system control, and presents them in an organized fashion with a readable format. It also touches on many emerging concepts currently being developed in labs and universities, and is revised frequently.

Great Book
This book has a complete idea for the Power Electronics. Every line has an important meaning in it. Even though we have to read it very carefully. It worth for you to know all the bible of Power Electronics. One said Power System bible is Stevenson's book, on the other hand, Power Electronics' bible is Kassakian too. You can find everything in this book. You will not be regret if you hit this book.

NOT JUST FOR MANAGERS, IT'S A HANDBOOK FOR ALL
They call it "Successful Manager's Handbook". That is correct. But one thing you should know about this beautifully structured text is that it benefits anyone who seeks knowledge from it. Thus, I would not advise you to wait until you become a 'successful manager' before paying attention to it.
Even if you are the most unsuccessful messenger around, the valuable productivity guidelines in this book would go a long way in defining and improving your status. If diligently applied, the principles of this book would enhance your overall potentials: be it official or domestic.
This book is a handbook for all. It is an asset for matured dealings.

I haven't read this book yet
I just picked up a copy in an airport bookstore. I looked at one suggestion, and used it when I got back to the office. My productivity has skyrocketed. I think a lot of the suggestions here are commonsense. But do any of us have enough commonsense?

Absolutely great! I've read it several times.
It is very well written and keeps the readers interest. It was a hard book to put down. He helps to answer a lot of questions. I especially like to read about the actual "readings". I would love to meet him and have an actual reading with him. I am currently looking for other titles they may have written since 1996.

excellent
I read this book and absolutely loved it. I have also heard from hundreds of people who went to see him live, and he must be a great man. wish I could meet him.

Human body is made of cells, its aging is important.
Cell of the body must have the proper environment. Developmental changes (age changes) can be explained better at the cellular level. Errant condition and failure to correct lead to cell injury. The greater the number of cells injured the more likely system malfunction would occur.

Great blend of drama and reality.
Peter Goodchild's take on the events following the upheaval at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago masterfully mixes real life interviews with dramatic re-enactments from the courtroom. The actors portray the 60's "hippies" with passion and reverence. The interviewing of historians and participants provides intriguing details into the events. Truly a great blend of drama and reality.

Fun.
These plays are fun to read. They might seem old fashioned because they were written two hundred years ago, but actually I think they are relevant today and any day. I've read all four plays already dozens of times, and I wish more people could become acquainted with this period's marvelous literature.

A dazzling display of literary imagination
Compiled by Howard Waldrop (a renowned writer of deftly researched alternate-history stories and winner of both the Nebula and World Fantasy awards), Custer's Last Jump And Other Collaborations is an enthralling anthology of original short stories in which Howard Waldrop combined his talent with other skilled wordweavers such as George R. R. Martin, Bruce Sterling, and others. From a unique perspective on the saga of Troy; to a distant future in which Mankind is nearly extinct; to an alternate history when Crazy Horse uses Confederate monoplanes against Custer; Custer's Last Jump And Other Collaborations is a dazzling display of literary imagination, and a very strongly recommended read for science fiction fans enthusiasts everywhere.

A thrilling ride
Wild Cards 7, written by George R. R. Martin and John J. Miller is one of the best Wild Cards books so far. Eventhough I don't generally like the mosaic novels, this is a prime example on how it should be done.

It's possible that it is so succesful because there are only two writers, which clearly helps the pace. And ofcourse, the fact that half the book is written by my favorite writer George R. R. Martin, speaks for itself.

Dead Man's Hand is a 'parallel novel' to Wild Cards VI: Ace in the Hole. It follows a plotline that was mentioned in WC6, but not exploared - Chrysalis's murder, and the attempts by Martin's Jay 'Popinjay' Acroyd and Miller's 'Yeoman' Brennan to find the killer.

Popinjay, previously meerely a secondary character, proves to be a classic Martin hero - witty, clever and seemingly superficial, there is more to him than meets the eye, although that is only revealed slowly. I must admit I was disappointed that we won't see the Turtle in this story, but Jay was a suitable compensation.

Yeoman was a different story. Although I have allways liked him, his new love affair with Jennifer 'Wraith' Maloy, is not only unlikely but uninteresting, unlike his past relation with Chrysalis. Now Brennan is little but your average action hero running aroung beating people up and delivering one liners.

As a mystery, the novel works rather well. Certainly the identity of the killer is unexpected. On the other hand, the authors don't quite let you feel this is a Mystery novel - you're too focused on the action/thrilelr plots resolving the story of T-Malice, the master that enslaved so many Wild Cards characters, and the Shadow Fist gang - who try to benefit from Chrysalis's murder.

One of the things I liked best about this novel was the focus on jokers. Although the heros are an ace and a nat, there are more Jokers active in this Wild Cards novel than in any other, many of them showing strength and courage. The Wild Cards series tends to focus on Aces, but I personnaly like the Jokers at least as much, and quite possibly more. The dark side of the Virus, so to speak, can be more fascinating than the more obvious Superhero stuff.

Overall Dead Man's Hand is a thrilling ride, filled with action, advanture, cool ideas, and an extremely powerful climax, in which there is a confrontation between several major characters. The confrontation at the end is one of the Wild Cards' strongest moments, and this novel certainly holds up there with DOWN AND DIRTY, as the best of the Wild Cards so far.
