A must have for collectors of Antique English Silver
This book is a must have for anyone who collects antique English silver. Not as comprehensive as a lot of others I have seen which is actually a plus since it fits comfortably in your pocket when you go antiquing. I keep my copy next to my computer so I have it handy while surfing the silver listings on eBay. Well worth the price.

Amazing.
If you hang around with fellow homeowners, there's a lot of water cooler conversation about various things, including the electrical code. This book just nails everything you ever wondered about, everything you haven't yet wondered about, and a few thousand things that you'll never need to know. Want to install a subpanel? Want to figure what gauge of cable to use to supply it? Want to know how to calculate the in^3 fill of a box? How deep to bury an underground cable? How to use raceways? That information totals about 1/4 of 1% of the contents of this book.

The whole family loves this book.
We have the Oceans and Jungles books in this series and I want them all. My 2 year old son adores them. He finds new animals all the time and likes to hear all about them. I think the books are great because they combine the fun of a flap book with the mystery of a puzzle. They are beautiful to look at and lots of fun. I wish they'd come back in print, though I imagine they are expensive to manufacture. We think they're worth it!

PURITAN BOOKSHELF CD (Volume One) On the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
Published in CD-ROM by Still Waters Revival Books (03 April, 2001)
Authors: Puritan and Reformed Authors
Amazon base price: $19.95

A Rare Treat
The Puritan Bookshelf CDs are a wonderful collection of rare, out-of-print books which would cost a fortune even if one could spend the time searching for them in libraries and used bookstores in obscure places the world over.

Volume One contains twenty-two books, seventeen of which were written by Puritans and Covenanters of the 16th and 17th centuries.

From John Arrowsmith's extensive treatment of John 1:1-18, to John Trapp's phrase by phrase commentary on Matthew, this CD is a treasurehouse of knowledge from some of the best minds of the Reformation.

I especially appreciate William Gouge's convicting sermon in A Recovery From Apostacy, which concerns a certain contemporary prodigal son, and the subsequent receiving of this "penitent renegado" into the Church. He then makes an excellent, thorough application of Luke 15:31 to the church, and to believers individually.

I also appreciate Gouge's clear, simple writing style in his Exposition on the Whole Fifth Chapter of John, etc. Here he expounds on such varied topics as the flood (Gen. 7), marriage (Eph. 5), genuine salvation versus self-deception (Ps. 30), and putting on the whole armour of God (Eph. 6).

This is but a small taste of what is available on these CDs. Tremendous value and a wealth of wisdom and biblical instruction are packed into every CD. If you're interested in reformed theology, this is a great way to get an extensive library of books, lectures and sermons, for very little expense.

By the way, you can read a summary of the complete 32 CD set of Puritan Bookshelf CDs in one place online, at Still Waters Revival Books. SWRB also lists a similar set of 30 CDs in their Reformation Bookshelf CD series.

An extremely well-written introduction into monopoly regulation both in theory and in practice. Armstrong et al. explain the relevant concepts without making use of mathematical models.

Responsibility and Control : A Theory of Moral Responsibility

A Nice Philosophical Explanation
Fischer and Ravizza's (F&R) book, Responsibility and Control, provides the most recent defense of compatibilism (according to the timing of this review). They are not presenting any "knock-down arguments" for their view. Rather, they are offering philosophical explanation (in Nozick's sense) as to how to provide a working theory of moral responsibility with the truth of causal determinism. They do not contend the truth or falsity of causal determinism; they simply believe that whatever is the truth of the matter, it is irrelevant given their account of moral responsibility.

F&R provide a well defended account of what they call "guidance control." It is strongly built off of the earlier work of Harry Frankfurt's article, "Alternate Possibilities and Moral Responsibility." Using this, they attempt to build an account that solves clear cases about actions, consequences, and omissions in a clear symmetical way. In doing so, they believe the indirect and direct challenges to the compatibility thesis should be rejected.

After doing so, they attempt to look at "mesh theories" (e.g. Frankfurt and Watson) which look at the time-splice properties of an agent, and F&R argue for a contrasting (geniune) historical approach. In doing so, they use Galen Strawson's work to help answer particular problems. Following in their last chapter, they summarize all of their main points again, and look at Robert Adam's argument (in the appendix) concerning emotions and moral responsibility.

The extremely nice features of this book are that they argue for their position very clearly. One should have little trouble following their arguments, examples, and what they intend on doing. They tell you what they plan on doing, how they will do it, and then go right into it. Following, they summarize it again to make everything from that chapter and the preceeding chapters come together.

Another nice feature of this book is that it is exceptionally well argued. Though I found some disagreements along the way, naturally expected of anyone, I thought they provided a robust account that at least does what they intended: the provide an account of freedom that gives us a working theory which can be reworked, but meets the incompatibilist challenges, though honestly not enough perhaps to move everyone toward compatibilism (i.e. this is a philosophical explanation, not knock-down argument).

Because of these nice features and the good content, I highly recommend this book.

A great guide to all types of dinghy rigging
The book is fantastic. It is the first book I have found that shows all types of rigging techniques as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each. There are many pictures of the systems on different boats with a couple of schematic diagrams. I would say the book is targeted at racers primarily, be it at club or national level. Its a very useful book if you are refitting a boat, as I did.

The original and still the best
Roget was born in England of French parentage and made the development of an English Language Thesaurus his life's work. He gained little recognition in his own lifetime but the results of his endeavours have been diligently embellished and supplemented by generations of academics so that now, when we need another word for the one in our mind, when we are seeking a word but it won't come to mind, when we want to put together that "catch phrase" that will bring our customers running to our door, we reach instinctively for Roget's Thesaurus. They're even a standard part of the kit for most Word Processing programs.

Organized both by subject matter and alphabetically, my Thesaurus is a pleasure to dive into. If I have one problem with it, it's that, having found the word I want, I keep reaing for the pure joy of the language. It's my firm belief that Roget has help keep the English language a rich, multi-cultural language that is understood worldwide.
