The Grammar of Meaning : Normativity and Semantic Discourse

Brilliant analysis of how meaning and normativity work
This work is an analysis of the nature of "meaning-talk," and takes a fresh approach to the topic. It draws on the work of Wilfrid Sellars and Robert Brandom, and articulates claims of meaning as normative rather than descriptive. Along the way, and perhaps most important, there is a discussion of the nature of normativity. Although this book requires a background in philosophy in order to understand, it has enormous implications for recent philosophical debate. Taking the Wittgensteinian idea that normativity arises within our practices, the authors develop a perspective that is not merely suggestive (as Wittgenstein often was) but thoroughly discussed and defended. By rights, this book, alongside Brandom's Making it Explicit, should set the parameters for philosophical discussion of language and normativity for years to come.

A sparkling and mischevous gem.
Although less well-known than the "Earl of Louisiana" and the recently-rescued-from-neglect "Between Meals," this sly and rollicking account of a Gentleman con-man is among Liebling's greatest achievements in form and in style. No follower of AJL's work can fail to note the author's bag of tricks or his own con game within the story, both of which illustrate Liebling at the top of his game. Purportedly a reporter's account of an aged confidence man, the work is in fact a running gag. Liebling was well-versed in the lore of American fun-and-games, an erudition that breaks forth in these pages with unalloyed glee. He contributes an account of gunfights in newspaper offices that some readers will recognize as an offshoot of a Twain story (which was also worked over, without gunfire, by Mencken).

The structure is simple: an aged newspaper man (the Colonel) recounts his life in "the Fourth Estate," complete with race tracks, swindles, marks, boobs and baloney. Charming scams are told in an engaging, orotund style in the hands of a master reporter and portraitist whose skills are sorely needed today. Liebling's delight in his world are evident, and an attentive reader will view the modern era with a more mirthful eye when he finishes the book. It is also worth pointing out that, as an example of a well-told story, this book is unsurpassed. The details are perfect and the timing is exquisite. Seasoned readers of Red Smith, Joe Mitchell and Damon Runyon (to pick only three)will noticed many inside jokes that only increase on re-reading. One fears this work has been neglected because it is just too damn clever and too damn good. Now that a humorist has been awarded a Nobel Prize, perhaps America will awaken to the fact that fun and wit have some revealing things to say. But do not let the fear of portentious Truth deter you from this book: you need gain nothing but fun.

Templeton: Not Just Mutual Funds
I have been familiar with John Templeton for a while now because of Templeton Mutual Funds. . . little did I know that Mr. Templeton was such a great writer on spiritual matters!

If you have ANY belief in God, and even if you don't, I would definitely recommend that you read this book. You'll learn that science and religion can co-exist quite beautifully and that science and the application of the scientific method just may be the key to experiencing a paradigm shift in theologic matters.

The book will also show you that keeping an open mind towards God and religion is an important aspect on your spiritual journey. Why ridicule and "fight against" other religions when you can embrace them and build upon your own beliefs with some of their beliefs that you weren't originally familiar with? Why deny God when our limited thought processes can't even begin to comprehend the concept and actuality of God?

Read this book. . . if not for the scientific and theological value, for the great pleasure of reading a truly inspiring book!

This book highlights both and gives great insights into the ways these exec's handle their deals.

Must Read Book!!
Being a health care executive, I feel I am fairly qualified to write a review on health care books. This book was very impressive, and I especially liked hearing what other executives of health care companies think about the future of the industry. I have read too many business books by unknown authors-this was finally one with some insight from people in industry. I highly recommend this book to any one interested in health care or in the health care industry.

Comprises both Causey's diary and memoir
Max Causey was a 35 year old administrative engineer when he was drafted into the jury that was to determine the legal fate of Jack Ruby for his murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, who was alleged to have been the assassin of President John F. Kennedy. Causey made the jury foreman and during the course of the trial kept a diary written in long-hand on a reporter's notebook. The diary begins with the second day of his jury duty and is filled with notes taken day-by-day as the trial continued, ending on Saturday, Mary 14, when the jury delivered its verdict. Causey then wrote a short epilogue. Later, he wrote a memoir based on that diary. Ably edited by John Dempsey, assistant professor of Journalism at the University of North Texas, The Jack Ruby Trial Revisited comprises both Causey's diary and memoir, augmented with editor's notes taken from the trial transcripts, books, newspaper and magazine articles and interviews with other surviving members of the jury. The Jack Ruby Trial Revisited is highly recommended reading for students of the JKF assassination controversy and the American criminal justice system.

John Kordic Story

Powerful, insightful bio of hockey enforcer, John Kordic
This book, which tells the story of hockey player/enforcer John Kordic is an exceptionally well-researched and thoughtful biography. John's life, and the events leading to his untimely, tragic death, are well-presented by the author, Mark Zwolinksi. The author pens the details of John's life as his team's "fighter" as well as the battles he fought off-ice, in a straight-forward manner, adding personal insights into John's character and the difficulties he faced with alcohol, cocaine and steriods. This is a true tale that "stays with the reader" long after he or she has turned the last page of the book.

The Fight of His Life: The John Kordic Story is truly one of the best biographies-- sports-related or not -- that I have read in a long time. A thoughtful and provocative read, this book is extremely well done; I would highly recommend it!

Valerie Wood is the author of Enforcer (with a forward by Link Gaetz) -- a novel about the lifestyle of a professional NHL enforcer and the toll his role takes on him personally, as well as professionally. Enforcer is available in softcover at Amazon.com
