Bravo!
Victor Villasenor wrote one of the premier literary works in the entire area of Mexican American Literature when he wrote Rain of Gold (Lluvia de Oro). It is a rare piece of art that can be appreciated by Mexican Americans such as myself or those from other cultures such as my Anglo wife. We felt like together we made the journey with Lupe.

While some works like Tomas Rivera's ...Y No Se Lo Trago La Tierra (...And the Earth Did Not Devour Him) can be almost a caricature of Mexican American culture, this book by Villasenor has fully rounded and developed characters that the reader can appreciate, understand, and relate to on a personal level. It is truly a fantastic book.

Great Book- Please Reed
This book is a really touching book about a mexican family that struggles through many difficulties. This book can relate to your own life, for example my parents, going through hard times in your life is very difficult for many families, it sometimes causes families to have problems. The two families in this book, met and were both really similar, family problems are hard going through. I recomend you to read this book, my Spanish class read this and I didn't hear of anybody that didn't like it. Read and understand it and try to relate it to your own life, compare it to your life. Please read, it's a very interesting book.

Viva Victor Villaseñor!
This book has added perspective to my own family's history. It was easy to become Lupe, to see Doña Margarita as my grandmother, and to feel the pain of the Revolution. My own family lived through the Mexican Revolution and thanks to Victor Villaseñor's precise and heart-felt words, I was able to live through it too. If you are a Chicano, a lover of history, a teacher, a student, this book is for you.

Nightwatch: An Equinox Guide to Viewing the Universe

Another Dickinson winner
Published and updated for the year 2000,this book is nevertheless another stellar contribution by author Terrence Dickinson.Spiral-bound,it is easily transported and accessed while out "looking." Well-presented, and down-to-earth(pardon the reverse pun) for those of us who are newbies to this most wonderful adventure of amateur astronomy.Dark skies!

Perfect for the beginner with no background
After perusing a number of books, I found this one to be the best. It is the easiest introduction into astronomy and star gazing that is offered. Many of the confusing explanations of other books are ommitted. Moreover, the essentials of finding the constellations are easily explained and easily followed. Lastly, the book had a great further reading and information section that was very helpful. I recommend this book to anyone with a budding astronomy interest.

Dispense with technical mind boggling!
This is the first book I've read explaining the universe that keeps it simple enough for a beginner to understand. I checked the book out at the public library and can not wait to get my own copy and a highlighter. Fantastic!

Superb book!
I saw this book at Borders and requested it from the library since I couldn't afford to buy it that day. It is an amazingly beautiful book with so many pictures. I love art books with lots of pictures, and this has many in colour as well as black and white. I recommend this book very highly. If you are a fan of art nouveau, Mucha, or just appreciate beauty, you will love this book.

Stunning Material And A Subject Well-Served
This large and very handsome book, which presents itself as the catalogue for a 1998 exhibition, is a beautifully and intelligently presented anthology of the artist's very diverse career, capturing drawings and paintings, sculpture, posters, illustrations, decorative panels, and even jewelry design; the work of a master, all in excellent reproduction. Mucha was a fascinating man and an artist of considerable magnitude, and as the title claims, his work is the spirit of Art Nouveau, though no such label should limit the amazing body of achievment found here. I haven't collected other books of his work yet, but surely this volume will remain definitive for some time.

Best of the Best Mucha books you can find
I have been looking for the picture "Lottery of the National Unity for Southwestern Moravia in Brno" ever since I saw the original this past summer in Prague, where the Mucha museum is located. If you have never heard of this picture, perhaps you can understand how MANY Mucha drawings, paintings, watercoulors and pastels are in here, to find such an obscure one. Not only does it have his known art, such as the 4 seasons, Laurel and Ivy, etc; But is also has his political art, THE ENTIRETY OF THE SLAV EPIC (Which is amazing), and many of his interior designs. How critics ever said Mucha wasn't one of the great masters of pen and ink, eludes me. This is one of the best books, and with Amazon's savings, it's even better. :)

Inheritors of the Storm
I first read Inheritors of the Storm the year it came out. It has been my favorite book since that time. Whenever I can not find a good new book to read, which seems to be getting more and more frequent, I will just pick up Inheritors and read it again; I can not count the times that I have read it. I have recommended to a number of people and they were also impressed. It has continued to surprise me over the years that this book is not more well known. I think it should be on required reading lists for high schoolers. After going through two copies I couldn't find a print of it anywhere; however my daughter surprised me with a used copy in mint condition for my birthday two years ago. (I still read my old and worn copy so I won't mess up the good one!) My only disappointment is that when I first read it, the book cover said the Mr. Sondheim was writing a sequal? I have been searching for it ever since. Was there ever one? If there is a sequal out there somewhere I would like to know.

VICTOR SONDHEIM WHO ARE YOU?
I just finished reading Inheritor's of the Storm for the second time (more than 10 years after the first reading) and I too have been searching for the sequel/author. I realize that Victor Sondheim was only a pen name and have been searching for the author's real name or other aliases to follow up on the next book -- but haven't had any luck. There is something about this book that is haunting. The characters become a part of your memory, almost as if you have known them in real life. If anyone out there knows anything about a sequel/continuation of this novel, please let me know.

Thanks!

Guess there was no sequel after all
Sondheim knits the lives of 3 young men and 2 women together in a very absorbing way. His ability to write convincingly from either gender's point of view is one of the book's best features. Another is his gift for communicating life at both extremes of society-- in the manor home and the migrant worker's tent. I highly recommend the book with one caveat: the reader will feel deprived that the author apparently never managed to complete the promised sequel (he would have been 70+ now). We come to care very much about these characters and are saddened to say good-bye to them after only one visit.

Inspiring Grandparents and their Loved Ones
Thanks for another great book in the "Soup" series. We grandparents appreciate you celebrating us with this special book. We all need inspiration, and this book helps us all, whether we are a grandparent or not.

I'm a grandfather (of five) and I simply loved this book!
I just don't know how the Chicken Soup people keep putting out such great books. There are so many of them and each has about 100 stories. Where do they get all of them? Frankly, after having read three others in the series, i didn't expect this one to be special in any way, but it surprised me alot. I found that the stories had such a wide variety of experiences that grandparents have today --- some that my own grandparents could never have had. I found just a few stories to be 'blah', but on the whole, most of the stories were either really touching or made me laugh out loud. I read several aloud to my children on the phoen becaause they reminded me of 5things that had happened in our house as my kids were growing up.
This book is an affirmation of grandparenting.

Chicken Soup for the Grandparent's Soul
This book is about the love and caring of grandparents for their grandchildren. It contains so many heartfelt emotions that were put into words so beautifully that I was touched by them very much. My friend Debby Stoner was a contributor and I was so impressed by her writing skills and how she expressed the depths of her feelings for her grandson. The book was an easy read, supplied me with hours of pleasure and was difficult to put down.

An excellent read
Reading this book renewed my pride in being a veteran, and it was heartwarming to read about the sacrifices made by our vets, and the honor they possess. I highly recommend this book to any vet, or to anyone who knows a vet.

Veteran's lives unfold in the turning of the pages
As a veteran, I was amazed that I have never read any of the stories in this book in the past. It took me a while to realize that these stories were in fact very personal, they effected the lives of the people deeply. Some of the stories made me cry others made me laugh. Many people do not realize how much so many have give to keep this country free, the only complain about the way thing are run in Washington, never have ever sacrificed even a small portion of what our great countries veterans have. Read this book, and thank God for the things you have, and for not having to go through what some of these veterans did.

Those who have family in the military this book is a must!
As the daughter of an Air Force pilot and the wife of an Army Cavalry Scout, this book touches me personally. The stories relayed in this collection are heart-warming, prideful and on occassion tear provoking, but for anyone who has had a family member in the armed forces or knows someone who is serving their country or has served in the past, this will definitely hit home.

The Design Bible, Even for Architects
I first spotted this book while studying in Denmark last year, where my host parents had studied under Victor Papanek. I would have studied under him at the University of Kansas, if not for his untimely and unfortunate passing. This book is one of the best books on the principles and ethics of design. It illustrates both the designer's responsibility and the potential to affect real change in the world through design. This most renowned of works by Papanek focuses on industrial design in two parts: How It Is, and How It Could Be. Papanek encourages radical thinking in design, and most of the topics in the book are easily translated to architecture. To my knowledge, reading this book has never been a required part of the core curriculum at the School of Architecture and Urban Design here at KU, but in my opinion, it should be.

design ethics
one of the best books on design ethics till date!

The Book All Designers Should Read
It has been many years since I read this important book. I hope this book will be made a compulsory read for all design students. If only more designers would adopt Mr Papanek's approach to socially-responsible design, the world will be a much better place to live in.

An Unfinished Song: The Life of Victor Jara

Very good, but 1998 update is even better
This is a well-written, highly personalized biography of Victor Jara, a great Chilean folksinger. However, in 1998 Joan Jara published an updated version of this book, which corrects a few minor errors and gives updates on Victor's legacy. This 1998 book can be found at various UK online booksellers, including amazon.co.uk.

This book should be more easily available!!
This is an incredible book about Victor Jara, the musician and activist in the Chilean struggle against fascism and imperialism, and his brutal murder by Pinochet and his forces. It is also a book about the people of Chile, and chronicles carefully their poverty as well as their amazing spirit. To the non-Chilean reader it provides an important account of the workings of imperialism. Joan Jara's book MUST be read as widely as possible. Why is it not available more easily in North America?! It is a very important book because of its relevance to modern day imperialism.

This is for you, Joan...
I tried to write to you so many times... I hope you could read my letter... Once I was in Madrid, in a bookstore, and your book just jumped right to my hands. Since then, your book stays near my bed (and I am talking about 15 years...), and turn to be part of my life. Thank you so much for the strenght, hope, the lesson for life you gave with your (and Victor`s) words and life story. I hope you found peace and forgiveness. We will never forget.

Where Is the Body?: Discovering the Church in the Heart of Israel

What the Church Needs to Know about Israel and Why
As the 'time of the end' draws closer and closer, it is appropriate that thinking Christians should pay more attention to the many passages in the Word which throw light on God's plans and promises. None are of more importance than those which relate to our Jewish roots - to Israel! Schlatter is passionate on the subject, seeing our one-eyed obsession with ourselves as the promised church without spot or wrinkle, but with hardly a thought as to where Abraham's natural descendants fit into the picture. And fit they do!

In his racy, conversational style, Schlatter builds a powerful case for the rejoining of the two arms of Christ's Body into one complete whole. He deplores the centuries-old blind and bitter attitudes of many representatives of the Christian church, which caused such cruel persecution of Jews, both nationally and personally, tracing them back to the time of Constantine in Rome. Even unto this day, many calling themselves Christian hold the Jew in execration! A careful examination of Scripture clearly showes that this is not God's view!

On the contrary, we see that even as the Jewish roots were set aside so that the Gentile peoples could be grafted in, so there is to come a time when they will be restored. Schlatter's conviction is that now is that time!

Having established a well-documented case for a church made up of Jews and Gentiles welded into one Body, Schlatter turns his attention to various other popularly held doctrines, such as those concerning the Antichrist, the Rapture, and the final Battle of the Ages, and presents a fresh approach to each. However, his heartfelt cry is for the Gentile church of today to so flow with the love of God toward our Jewish brethren that we seize the opportunity to fulfill Paul's teaching in Romans 11:25-32, and see them 'provoked to jealousy' because of our love for one another, just as God intended that they should be.

This book offers interesting and important insight into truths now being revealed to the body of Christ, and can be recommended to all who are seeking a deeper understanding of God's intent, as we come closer and closer to the unfolding of His plans for His people.

Review by NOW: Australian Christian Churches News Magazine
Here is an intriguing expose on the relationship between Israel and the Christian Church. Pulling no punches with the alleged anti-Semitic,end-times theologians of our time, Victor Schlatter draws on his experiences as a third-world Bible translator to present some fascinating insights into the biblical perspective on who belongs where in the body of Christ. With some surprising conclusions about, for example, who the '144,000' are, this well-read commentator is sure to give your brain a wake-up nudge as you contemplate your stance on end-times-ology. This is a must-read, biblically based alternative viewpoint with more than a little credibility.

From: NOW Magazine, (formerly the "Evangel") April 2000, page 42; Melbourne, Australia

Refreshing Revelations About the True Body of Christ
Victor gives us often ignored biblical evidence for why Christians must seriously consider their connection with the Jews. Victor convicingly argues that the True Body of Christ does and will include Jews and Christians. Though his thoughts are unsettling at times, they are thought provoking and worthy of serious study.

Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul
Very good book! Having been diagnosed with Cervical cancer, I found it encouraging to know that there are many cancer survivors out there.

Chicken soup for the Surviving Soul
After my diagnosis with breast cancer five years ago at age 28,this book was part of my salvation. Reading stories of otherssurvival helped me to realize that cancer is beatable. I now recommend this book to other cancer patients.

Faith, hope and love but the greatest of these is love
"Malignant", to hear this word when you or someone you love is diagnosed brings feelings of despair, fear and abandonment. The "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series gives you bits of humanity and makes you feel hopeful, trusting and accepting. The stories, poems and essays are put together to give to us encouragement. I myself am a 5 year survivor of stage 2 breast cancer and find the pages filled with new beginnings.
