Great Book, The Alien by Victor Besaw!
Victor Besaw DID NOT write "Alien"! He wrote an excellent story of a youth--"Godranac" growing up as a slave, trying to find out who he is, and where he belongs. Very good reading!

Great Series to Introduce Young Boys to Science Fiction
This particular incarnation of the Tom Swift series is a great place for young boys to discover science fiction. The stories are entertaining and do a good job of holding one's attention, plus the author attempts (with varied success) to weave in actual science here and there. I say the books are good for young boys because the protagonist is of course Tom Swift, and the format the adventure-story favored by many young boys, but the character Anita does offer a strong (but almost tomboyish) female role as well.

In the third story of the series, Tom must protect an alien space probe recovered from Io, one of Jupiter's moons, from theft while seeking to communicate with the artificial intelligence within. The story sets up the later works in the series as the probe helps Tom develop a hyperdrive and thus launch space exploration well beyond the moons of Jupiter.

Say goodbye to 501 Spanish Verbs!
First as a student of Spanish, and now as a Spanish teacher, at the secondary and college level, I have seen a lot of books about verbs. Like most beginning students, I bought 501 Spanish Verbs, and by the end of my first semester of college Spanish, I had already outgrown that limited book. In Spain, I found a fantastic book, Conjugación de los verbos: Manual Práctico (ISBN: 84-7640-891-9), but alas, the book is in Spanish, which limits its usefulness to beginning students.

All Spanish Verbs combines the usefulness of a 501 Spanish Verbs, with full verb conjugations, general rules of conjugation in the beginning, as well as tips on usual phrases, with the extended verb list of Conjugación.... What limits 501 Spanish Verbs is that there are 501 and only 501 verbs conjugated. In contrast, All Spanish Verbs provides models for the conjugation of every single paradigm you could encounter, and has an index with thousands upon thousands (I can't find my copy to give you the exact number) of verbs listed, with a reference to the fully conjugated verb that it conjugates like. For example, let's say you want to conjugate "mindanguear" (okay, not the most useful of verbs, but maybe you need to use it) and you look it up in 501... and the verb is not there. You're out of luck. With All Spanish Verbs... on the other hand, you see that mindanguear is not conjugated, but it is found in the index, and it is indexed to verb number 1--the model, basic -ar verb. You now know that this verb is conjugated perfectly regularly.

For the very early beginner, 501 Spanish Verbs might be a better choice, because it contains the 501 most frequent verbs you'll need to use, and for the first year of high school Spanish or the first semester of college Spanish, this might be sufficient. But if you have any language background and are comfortable with the idea of conjugating verbs, skip that book, and go straight to this one. Furthermore, if you think you will ever continue with Spanish, you will eventually need this kind of book.

Another advantage: since not as many verbs are conjugated fully, the book is nice and skinny, easy to stick in your briefcase or bookbag and carry everywhere with you!

It's time for real democracy
If you feel disenfranchised as a citizen and voter in America, this book may provide the answers you're looking for. Indeed, the consolidation of power in Washington, economic uncertainty, social erosion, and the 2000 presidential election debacle prove the need for election reform, more democracy and voter participation in self-government. It's time for us to re-examine ourselves. And it's time for real democracy.

The Stories of All of Us Need to be Told
This book serves not only as an informative social history of early 20th century Swedish immigration to the U.S., it is simply a delightful story as well. As we are a country of immigrants, almost anyone could look at an obscure man like A.V. Swanson and remember his or her own father, grandfather or great-grandfather. The immigrant's story can be told many times but as the author points out, "(But) each one has been different as a person, and unique in ways of becoming an American." The author is a marvelous and witty story teller. She unfolds the story of her father's life as it began in Sweden in the 1890's, the son of a coal miner, the oldest of ten children, and the hardships he and his family endured. Young Axel Victor Svensson was sent off as a farmhand at age 9 in order to supplement his family's poverty-level income. That experience set the tone for his determination not only to work hard but to work smarter. As a teenager, he caught "America fever" and set his sites on becoming not only an American but a successful one. As Axel Svensson became A.V. Swanson in Chicago, he became the most American of Americans. He chose his opportunities well, applied his work ethic, married and raised a family, established himself as a businessman and community servant in Ames, Iowa and then retired to farm life in his later but still active years. As life gradually slowed down for him, A.V. began his "life review", recounting his adventures that spanned two very different countries. These chapters, along with the author's fine research and a daughter's love and admiration mesh into a fascinating biography. I recommend this book to anyone whose interests lie in history of U.S. immigration, Swedish settlement in the Midwest during the early 20th century and to those who believe that "the stories of all of us need to be told."

From Belfast to Brazil
A thoroughly uplifting read. It is not often that one man has done so much for so many. The life of Bill Woods as related by his friend and colleague Victor Maxwell, reveals the medical missionary as the man he is. From his humble beginnings in war time Northern Ireland to his international status as a leading expert on the treatment of leprosy. Many trials and difficulties had to be faced and overcome with God's unfailing help, and in the process the deep heart, devotion to men's spiritual as well as physical needs, and his keen sense of humour, if not to say accident proneness, all shine through. Whoever picks up this book to read it will be challenged and encouraged; they will laugh and cry; they will be the better for it. An absolute 'can't put it down'.

Angels In My Life
This is the compelling story of a despondent man that has lost his wife. She died unexpectedly and the shock and devastation shattered a very loving husband to the point of believing life was not worth living without her.
In the dark of his room one night, anguished, alone, with tears running down his cheeks, he cried out to her. Miraculously, she answered him. It was clear and loud with her Brazilian accent and enveloped his senses. Thus it started his journey into a world unknown to him.
This is the story of his communication with his wife and other angels in his life. It is the story of his journey and the acceptance of the reality of what he was experiencing.
In the beginning it takes you through his doubts, his questions of his own vulnerability, and skepticism. He carefully walks through a myriad of unfamiliar mazes to complete acceptance.
I found myself, at first, reading it with distrust and suspect. As I turned the pages, I found I would like to believe in the possibility, and was comforted by the thought put forth. "Many pray but do not listen, and do not ask for all that is available."
Readers are asked to read this with an open mind, to absorb the possibilities, and examine their spirituality.

Kant's Psychology
Kant's Anthropology is what we call today - psychology. The book is a series of lectures that Kant himself edited into a book. Usualy we know Kant as hard to read, yet this book is unique in that. It flows, from subject to subject, examining man's mind and various characteristics of the human spirit. It is embodied with examples from life and literature, and gives a very good idea of Kants views regarding everyday life and behavior of normal people, and also of insane ones. It is a very warm book, filled with intelligent remarks about the human race, and it gives a very good notion of psychology (both cognitive and abnormal) in Kants days. I recommend it Highly.

A practical and comprehensive tome on antibiotic selection
This comprehensive textbook was designed for physicians who want an exhaustive review of antibiotic and vaccine selections for specific microorganisms. Its strength is what drugs to use when the standard drug cannot be given. At the current time, there is no textbook that addresses this common clinical situation in everyday medicine. I am the editor.

Architectural Lighting
This is an excellent book. It provides a comprehensive overview while supplying specific design applications on the topics of natural and electric lighting. It illuminates many technologies and design principles with straight forward language and clear reinforcing graphics.
I teach architectural lighting at the School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii. I have reviewed many lighting books for this class and have found the Egan and Olgyay text to be very appropriate for the beginning and advanced student as well as a very useful desk reference for design proessionals.
