Arrows against steel : the history of the bow

The development of mobile projectile combat
As a military historian and archer I loved this book. It details the development of archery as a weapon of warfare throughout history. Hurley gives detailed descriptions on how different cultures throughout history deployed there archers in combat. He also looks at specific battles and describes how and why archery was used successfully or failed to perform.

In order to understand the role of archery there is a lot of background given to two other forms of warfare, infantry and cavalry (particularly the use of shock). He talks about how cultural groups succeeded (or more often failed) in bring forth a balanced fighting force with a mix of cavalry, infantry, and fixed or mobile archery.

A Perfect Book To Learn From............
After an eight year hiatus from playing both drums and timbales.
My passion for keeping time has returned to full force and with this book I'm not missing a beat. Not only is this book well written but also very informative(you learned so much). It breaks everything(patterns)down to how to applied them in a drumset, conga, bongo or timbale setting(solo or ensemble).
Bravo to Victor Rendon!!!

Collectors refer to this book as "The Bible"
I borrowed a copy of THE ART OF THE CHINESE SNUFF BOTTLE. THE J & J COLLECTION from my father (who tells me that other collectors refer to this book as "the Bible"), and although I'm not yet a collector of anything, I was so impressed with this book that I want to share this discovery with others. I have since come accross some reviews of the book in Oriental magazines, and will be quoting from them as these professionals put accross their thoughts so much better than I. First of all, the luxury of the edition: "imposing size, lavish layout and exquisitive presentation of the background, two-volume work (800 pages, 1200 illustrations, 25 x 34.2 cm dimensions ... superb life-size photographs and extraordinary detail views ... " according to Jana Volf in ORIENTATIONS magazine, July 1994. As for content, Robert KLEINER wrote in ARTS OF ASIA, Nov.-Dec. 1995, "This vast work is arguably the finest book ever written on the arts of the Qing (1644-1911) dynasty. Each snuff bottle is taken as an opportunity to explore a differing aspect of Chinese aesthetics and culture, thereby, in small increments, revealing the inner meaning both of this culture and of the art represented by the bottles themselves ... The entire work (presents) a rigorous study of the art and evolution of the snuff bottle itself, and ... the underlying cultural background of China as evolved by the thoughts, beliefs and ambitions of the ruling Imperial household and the vast literati class, the scholars who oiled the wheels of the nation's life ... The J&J collection is almost unrivailled in its possesion of snuff bottles which can be used as exemplars of "Palace style ..." About the collection, Clare Lawrence wrote in the Spring 1994 issue of the JOURNAL of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, "I think this is a truly great book of a great, if not the greatest snuff bottle collection in the world today." Finally, this book was awarded 1st. prize as the best art book produced in Hong Kong, in 1993. I must say it is a must to the serious art collector. Mathias F. de Carvalho

Atlas of the Visible Human Male: Reverse Engineering of the Human Body

Anatomy Meets Technology in a Most Fascinating Way
I own the paperback version of this book, and it is a wealth of anatomical information. First of all, I can tell all of my friends that I have a dead body in my library. But aside from the obvious humor I can get from owning this book, this is a truly wonderful work of computer and photographic technology. To have a visual reference of an entire human body is not only informative and fascinating, but useful for medical students, writers, forensic specialists, or just the plain curious.

The book details an entire human body in a series of 1-mm thick slices from head to toe. There are three distinct views: Transverse, or a horizontal slice; Coronal, or a vertical slice from side-to-side; And Sagittal, or a vertical slice front-to-back. Each left-hand page features a close-up of a featured slice and a legend indicating where on the body the slice is located, and each right-hand page features 12 slices in smaller photos, each numbered in sequence so you can follow the path of organs and other bodily features.

Without this book, the only way you could find something more like a cadaver is in the local morgue. I recommend this book highly.

Azrael on the Mountain

Captures
Victor Depta is the first person since Lee Maynard(author of Crum)to truly capture the images of rural West Virginia.

"Azrael on the Mountain" is a collection of poems that one cannot put down. One will keep reading to see what he will say next. Some may find him offensive, but others, like me, find him as a realist.

best bamboo book out of print!???
Bamboo World is one of the very best , most comprehensive, most
detailed , best photographed, authoritative texts on bamboos
and clumping bamboos especially that there is (was!) available.
Why the heck it would now be out of print is a real mystery.
It is also a pity and a blow to those of us cultivating
clumping bamboos.
This book is IT for those who do.
Bring it back into print ASAP....
please ;^)

Banned: Classical Erotica: Forty Sensual and Erotic Excepts from Aristophanes to Whitman-Uncensored

Find This If You Can
There is an unfortunate idea current, that sex was invented in the 20th century and before that Victorian ideas held sway all the way back to the dawn of time. This book is a refreshing antidote to that idea, with its merry quotations from over 2,000 years of erotic writings. It also has some examples of bowdlerized and direct translations, which are interesting not only in themselves but as a way of recognizing stealthy censorship. All in all, this is a marvelous resource.

It has it all!
Before you pay a consultant, or even begin to get serious about opening your business, read this book. It will save you ten times the purchase price in fees and lessons learned the hard way (i.e. mistakes). This book is extremely thorough, very detailed, and as far as I can see, leaves very little out. It will give you a good jump start on what you need to know, what you need to look for, and what to stay away from.
