wow simply wow, ummmm not sure what else to say 5 stars speak for themselfs, this is THE book on the end game and well worth the money

If you have played long enough to get to the endgame with some regularity, get this book. It covers all the basics, giving guidlines and reinforing the fact that caculation always wins out over rules. I found the knight ending particularly tricky, but this book give all the themes neccesary to form a plan. What ? you're only interested in the middle game? Knowing the endgame will help your middle game too, because you will see opprutinties to simplify to a favorable endgame.

I'm an unrated amateur just beginning endgame study and I have found this book to be very helpful. In fact it contains the first explanation of the procedure for KBN v. K that I've read that was clear and simple enough to allow me to master this particular endgame. Although Pandolfini's Endgame Course is probably the best endgame book for beginners, it really just gives one position after another in an exercise format; it does not do a very good job of explaining general principles and procedures for you to generalize to your own games. Fundamental Chess Endings fills that hole very nicely. While I admit that it may be a bit heavy to serve as a beginner's only endgame source, it makes a perfect companion to - and greatly enhances my results from - Pandolfini. Between these two books I think I've found an ideal endgame course.

It's Frank Peretti's brilliant novel writing skills...condensed! It's a super-cool family of archeologists--minus a mother--who investigate phenomena in the spirit of Indiana Jones, only with a Christian perspective. A nice alternative to the gore and junk in the Indiana Jones movies.

This one will freak you out. A disease that makes anyone super-strong and loony as Michael Jackson (maybe even worse). This is one of the toughest battles the Coopers have had to fight before...can they survive The Deadly Curse of Toco-Rey?

The book is cool, but loads of creepy stuff. There's a lot action too. Definitely lives up to the Cooper Kids genre that Peretti has going.

Parental Warning: Almost Indiana Jones stuff here. Skeletons are everywhere, deadly, raving diseased people, Hostile Natives (of COURSE they'd have hostile natives!) and nasty "carvies". Pretty intense, but pretty cool.

The author of this series is Frank Peretti. Of all the books that he has published, this is one of my favorites. This story is about three Christians named Dr. Cooper and his two kids, Jay and Lila. They go on an archeological dig in Central America in the tomb of an ancient warrior king with strange guards called Mucay-Tochetin, that wander around the land that surrounds the tomb. There are also flying slugs whose skin has slime on it that is as deadly as acid! Will they all fall under the curse, or will the caravies get them? Although this book has no illustrations, Frank may as well have done them himself with his awesome writing. The suspense will kill you as you turn the pages wondering if all of the Coopers will come out of each adventure alive! I liked this book as a Christian because Dr. Cooper shows strong faith in God. He turns to Him in his most weak moments and receives strength in one way or another. I strongly suggest reading this awesome book. It will make you perspirate with fear! I have read the book many times and this is worthy of a Newbery award. May the curse stay away from you!

Is there anything that Peretti can't write - or won't? This time (get it?) the Coopers are in the good old US, and traveling with their old buddy Mac to a strange desert location. Ghostly sightings, and massive cliff carvings make their trip worth it...until they are separated by the minor amount of two hundred years! Jay and Lila desperately try to decipher the messages being left in the past...while Doc and Mac try to decipher the messages being left at the same time...in the future!!

The adventure and fun of the Coopers hits new heights with The Legend of Annie Murphy.

This was a very good book. I enjoyed it all, I couldn't put it down! I love books that have time-travel in them. This book was about Jay and Lila switching places in time with a sheriff from 100 years ago. They were investagating the mystery of Annie Murphy who supposedly killed her husband. People had said that strange carvings had apeared in the canyon where she once lived, and supposedly was shot for muder. What really ocured was that a time vortex caught Annie, who now floats in and out of time, between 100 years. The vortex was caused because of the wierd gravity in the canyon. When both kids and sheriff come close to her at the same point in time, the vortex causes them to switch places in time. The kids and their father discover a plot between the judge and the sheriff, to frame Annie. Is she a murderer or not? And will the kids return to they're own time before the time vortex disapears? As I said, I couldn't put this book down.

In this fantasic novel, Frank Peretti captures you up in the story of a murderess, and a time warp that send Jay, Lila and a sheriff through time. The suspense this story delivers is unbearable. I didn't want to stop. Even for school. If you like mysteries, this is for you!

I used this book for a course on Digital Electronics. Its great. The book has a great typeset, clear and crisp fonts that go easy on the eyes, well structured (such that you read what you need in order to understand the next chapter). The book is illustrated with apt diagrams. I would consider this book to be beginner-intermediate. This book is a good starting point for learn digital stuff, and a good reference after you learn digital stuff. Its hard to find a book as good as this one.

This is the book for you. I am a 32 year old U.S. Army leader. I instruct at the U.S. Army Signal Center. I have no time for traditional education. This book is a masterful work and well suited for anyone who desires an intimate knowledge of digital systems, but has no prior background. If you don't have time
to take a traditional college course. GET THIS BOOK! Better than any classroom instruction this book will give you all the fundamentals in a clear and concise manner. Wonderful book.

I use this book for a digital course im taking. Its GREAT at conveying information in a manner that you can understand. It starts of SIMPLE (things like number systems), and takes you to the basics of circuits (AND, OR, NOR, NAND, NOR, gates), and then takes you into some very detailed things. By the time your done with this you will be able to design your OWN circuits and impress your friends :-)

University squared is an hysterical look at the college lives of the strange animals who survive a medical experiment gone wrong. Seeing the beautiful Brandy alone is worth the price of the book. But, Frank Cho's brilliant art work, which is among the best ever in the business, combined with his irreverent wit, make this book a real winner.

"Liberty Meadows" is probably the funniest comic strip I have read in a very long time. Now see how it all began. Very reminisent of Berke Breathed's college strips, only ten times rauncier and the drawings are better looking too. Anyone who has either been to college, been in a Frat or had a family member that has been in a Frat will really enjoy these strips. Noone has done such good artwork in a newspaper strip since Calvin and Hobbes, and Frank Cho's drawings are brilliant. Some of the characters are different. Frank is a duck, Leslie is a giant talking Lima Bean and although Ralf is pretty much of the same design, he is a giant angry gerbil. The only characters that have not changed since the switch from "University Squared" to "Liberty Meadows" are Dean (a pig possibly based on Ted Kennedy) and Brandy (although in this she is an attractive coed instead of an attractive woman working in an animal sanctuary). I recommend you buy this book. You will laugh until you ache.

With "Liberty Meadows" making a permament transition from comic strip to comic book at the end of 2001, folks who want to aquaint themselves with the new version could do worse than to pick up this collection of the strip that spawned it. "University Squared," Cho's first strip, is "Liberty Meadows" in a raw, unrefined and uncensored state -- a state the comic book may take a few steps towards once freed from the rigours of newspaper censors.

Even in its young form, though, Cho's strip shows again and again why he is held in such high regard. His characters are funny, his situations are original and he doesn't blanch from tackling weighty topics or rauncy issues whenever he wants. Get this, get "Liberty Meadows: The Big Book of Love" and then start getting the comic book.

Read IT'S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS by Frank Sonnenberg and Alan D. Hembrough, a collection of over 500 thought-provoking lessons to inspire a richer life . . . none of them are particularly original; i.e., you've probably seen them before either in their present form or something relatively close.

Yet I found myself liking this book very much . . . and revisiting if often . . . in addition, I liked the accompanying black-and-white photos . . . they were all of the variety that cried out to me, "SLOW DOWN!" . . . for example, one that I'm looking at now while I type shows a guy lying on the ground with a newspaper on his face . . . the lesson, or "thought" if you will, is that we should, "Learn to take a five-minute vacation."

You'll be inspired as you read this book . . . also, if you're looking for a great gift idea at [price] to give to somebody else (including your kids), this is it!

"Who Can It Be Now?," named after the Men at Work song, is just over 200 pages of music and pop culture trivia taken from the '80s. Most of the book is devoted to just one-liners (not the entire song), with the lyric on one side of the page and the song title, band/artist, and bits of trivia on the opposite side. Some of the sections in the book feature one-hit wonders (like Kajagoogoo {"Too Shy"} and Toni Basil {"Mickey"}), actors-turned-singers (like Patrick Swayze {"She's Like the Wind" in 'Dirty Dancing'} and Rick Springfield), as well as bits of movie, TV, and celebrity trivia, but only if it pertains to a certain '80s song. There are also lots of black-and-white photos (pretty much on every page) of singers/performers/actors, like Debbie (Deborah now) Gibson, Michael and Janet Jackson, Mr. T, Weird Al, and the Brat Pack, just to name a few.

Despite some of the catty remarks and photo alterations (see Mary Lou Retton and Lionel Richie), this book will certainly make you laugh and reminisce if you're a child of the '80s. It's hard to digest all of the info in this book in one sitting (flipping back and forth between the lyrics and answers does lose its appeal after awhile), but halfway into it, you'll be dusting off your old CDs/cassettes/vinyls and playing them while reading this book. The only gripe I have is that there's no index or table of contents to find certain pages quicker; other than that, "Who Can It Be Now?" is a fun and nostalgic trip back to the '80s. Worth reading if you're an '80s fanatic like I am.

I was one of those 1980s teenagers who watched MTV when it used to play music videos 24 hours daily, and this book has a lot of the music artists who performed on MTV, including the song titles in the book. It even has a picture of Ronald Reagan, the Rubik's Cube, and other 1980s nostalgia that I remember so well. Oh yeah, it also made me remember seeing Courtney Cox on that Bruce Springsteen music video doing that swinging dance on his stage when I read about Bruce in this book...also that old Madonna look complete with the Boy Toy belt and wedding dress. :) If you want to remember the great music artists of the 1980s, their songs, and the memories, get this book!

If my review title makes you scratch your head and say to yourself, "hmmm, where do I know that from?", you should really buy this book. (It's from Styx.) Anyway, this book is a little tongue in cheek, obviously, but it does more than just make fun of Tommy Tutone, Bananarama, The Human League, songs like 867-5309 Jenny, etc. It has dozens of little quizzes, where you see the lines from songs on one page, and then when you flip to the next page you find out the names of the groups that sang them. Interspersed throughout the book are tons of little articles (blurbs, really) about various groups, which tell you, in all likelihood, more than any human would ever want to know about, say, Spandau Ballet. But it's still a good book. I recommend the living daylights out of this one, it's hilarious, especially at parties.

Frank Worsley, the Captain of Shackleton's Endurance, is a surprisingly competent writer with a style that has a knack for the wonderous details of nature as well as the humorous side of things needed in desparate situations.

The book begins with the 3 boats making the dash towards Elephant Island. Most of the book naturally details the journey of the James Caird to South Georgia. Worsley, though very quirky in personality, was an incredibly resourceful, couargeouse man and a navigator without peer. Without him there would have a loss of all lives.

Though at times Worsley may confuse the non-sailing reader with his descriptions of their sailing technique(especially the venacular terms), he nevertheless manages to make you feel you are right in the boat with them. His descriptions of waves, icebergs, etc. are brilliant. He also has a wonderful sense of humor. He has an ability to coin a phrase in that Edwardian period style that is almost poetic. He came from an educated family in New Zealand and it shows.

He also brings great detail to the shorter but still dramatic crossing of South Georgia.

Overall, it is a wonderful book that is alive with details and personal perspectives from a man with a superb mind and great heart.

Frank Worsley's description of the boat journey he made with Shackleton and two other crewmen of the Endurance is remarkable not only for the adventure it tells, but for the language it is told in and the largeness of spirit that it demonstrates. When I first read this--a battered copy in the local library--I felt that every teenager in the United States should have the opportunity to experience the strength of character, understanding and fine prose style Worsley demonstrates in this tremendously exciting adventure story. His description of Shackleton's leadership qualities is insightful and generous. His own navigational miracle of bringing this tiny craft across the wildest seas in the world to the relatively small island of South Georgia is understated. This book is inspirational in the best sort of honest and clear way. I have been to Elephant Island and S. Georgia and my admiration is increased by the experience.

Among all Shackleton's achievements and triumphs, great as they were, his one failure was the most glorious. By self-sacrifice and throwing his own life into the balance he saved all of his men.
This is how Worsley ends his book that describes exactly how Shackleton was able to save them all. Though for this part of the journey, the amazing boat trip to South Georgia, perhaps it was not so much Shackleton as Worlsey who saved them all. Written by a down-to-earth practical man it is easy to get completely caught up in the story. Even after finishing the book, you will find it hard to stop thinking about this fantastic achievement of navigational skills.
Before reading this book, I strongly recommed the book "Endurance".

While this slight volume can't hold a candle to something like Will Friedwald's comprehensive analysis of Sinatra's recorded career, it's quick and handy. Moreover, while the authors' selections will inevitably produce disagreements, their choices are unlikely to provoke incredulity (no "My Way," or recommendations from the "Duets" albums). And when there are multiple versions of the same tune, which is more often than not the case, the authors give helpful rankings of the best choices. But just to give you an idea of how necessarily inadequate a collection limited to 101 recordings is, Sinatra's absolutely sublime, definitive Reprise recording of "I Hadn't Anyone Til You" is not mentioned. Still, I find myself making more use of this book than any other about Old Blue.

The music of Frank Sinatra is timeless and though the title contains the words "the 101 Best Recordings", you may find that it is just a starting point and find your own 101 favorites. You have over 1000 songs to choose from so your picks are bound to be different than the authors. The book lays out 101 excellent songs, gives information to listeners (date recorded, album it can be found on, arranger, etc.) and tells the background of the song and sometimes an anecdote about when it was recorded. The book is not only for longtime fans of Sinatra's work (though they will be more familiar with all the names, etc.). If your Sinatra cd collection extends to one cd of his greatest hits, then this book can help you figure out where to go next. The stories and anecdotes may not mean much but you can figure out if you want to explore Frank's Columbia, Capitol, or Reprise years. For the experienced Sinatra listener, the book is excellent for starting debate with fellow Sinatra fans or perhaps rediscovering a gem you've forgotten or never really listened to before. Obviously, it is not a biography so don't expect stories about Frank the man, just Frank the singer. My only complaint is that I wish they gave more detail to the songs. I realize they had 101 songs to review, but I wanted more background about the recording session and Frank's opinions and views of the songs. However, there are other books for that.

How do you pick the 101 greatest Sinatra recordings? The authors certainly came up with arguably the definitive list,and presented it in a most enjoyable read.Another reviewer wished there was a CD boxed set to accompany the book. I did the next best thing. I have an extensive Sinatra collection and I happen to have all the 101 songs(the correct versions). I bought some high quality cassettes and simply went through my CDs and tapes and put together the audio to the book..three 90 minute and one 60 minute tape covered the 101 songs.Needless to say, it was a labor of love putting these songs in order and is fascinating to read the descriptions and history of the songs as they are playing.

Excellent! This is number 2 in his series. #1 Rethinking the Wineskin #2 This one #3 Pagan Christianity. It is written in the right spirit. It is easy to read. If you are a Christian- You just gotta read it!

As one who has encountered the covering teaching in action I found this book to be a breath of fresh air into the stifling atmosphere that this teaching promotes. The adherents to this teaching may be sincere and well meaning. However, I agree with the author, the covering teaching promotes a ". . . system that is bereft of Biblical support and driven by a spirit of control."
Viola advocates an alternative understanding of Christian leadership. This alternative does not emulate a military style chain of command but instead is modeled on the more scriptural example of the human body. Viola clearly and thoroughly outlines the Biblical basis for this alternative but also provides Biblical answers for those who would question that alternative.
For those of you have had concerns and doubts about the biblical basis for the covering teaching, this book is for you. For those of you who are actively promoting the covering teaching and are not afraid to honestly examine your position in light of the scripture, this book is also for you.

I thank God for Frank Viola and his heart to see true Christianity restored. Viola is a great read and his style is not offensive or demening to those outside of the house church movement. I myself happen to be still in an instutional church and find Viola to be refreshing and a good writer.

This book dives into what RETHINKING THE WINESKINS begin. Viola looks at the current leadership model (CEO-type professional clergy or "pastors, ministers, or priests") and examines the practice in light of the New Testament model of Jesus in Matthew 20:20-28. He offers clear exposition from the Bible and practical insights from his own experiences in house churches.

I believe its time for us to reexamine leadership in the modern church. I am tired of seeing professionally trained men come to lead churches when we need to return to the biblical model and allow the Holy Spirit to lead His church. While its clear that God desires to have leaders in the Church (Titus 1:5; 1 Peter 5:2-5), we need to ask the question of how many leaders, where should these leaders be chosen from, and who qualifies as a leader in the NT Church?
