Five books in one
Like its predecessor (_Fun with Nature_), this hardback volume is really five "Take-Along Guides" bound together: _Wildflowers, Blooms, and Blossoms_; _Berries, Nuts, and Seeds_; _Birds, Nests, and Eggs_; Seashells, Crabs and Sea Stars_; and _Rocks, Fossils, and Arrowheads_. You often see those individual paperbacks on sale at nature center gift shops. Each page features a single plant, animal, or object, and matches simple facts with realistic artwork. These are the kids of natural items children will be most likely to find in North America. Relevant basic activities are scattered among the entries. My favorite section here is from _Birds, Nest, and Eggs_, because each species takes up a double-page spread, with the bird on the left-hand side and its identifiable nest and eggs on the facing page on the right. The illustrations are beautiful. Recommended for naturalists, educators, and parents -- anyone who works with young children to help them understand the natural environment around them.

Patients As Victims: Sexual Abuse in Psychotherapy and Counselling (Wiley Series in Psychotherapy and Counselling)
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (1994)
Authors: Derek Jehu, John Davis, Tanya Garrett, and Linda Mabus Jorgenson
Amazon base price: $165.00
Used price: $129.92

clinical validation
Derek Jehu's authoritative study of sexual abuse in psychotherapy offers much hope to those who have undergone such a traumatic event. The book is clearly for clinicians and students but remains accessible to anyone trying to understand the process of therapy abuse. Professor Jehu validates the experiences of abused clients/patients with a rare understanding and gives a much needed credibility to the suffering endured by victims. Throughout the book the reader is made unequivocally aware of the responsibilities therapists have towards their clients and that at no time can a client/patient be seen to have manipulated the situation. Writing within his profession brings even greater credence and I would thouroughly recommend that this book becomes a standard text-book for everyone entering the therapeutic profession

What a Springboard for a Writing Assignment and Empathy
I read the book to my middle school classes and then had them fill in an "I AM" writing assignment I picked up at a writing conference. There are 18 2-word sentence starters. The kids were to choose to be one of the four characters in the story and write from that point of view. The papers are some of the best I have ever gotten out any English class. Boys wrote with the most emotion that I have ever seen. The book also lends itself to the dicussion of abandonment and foster care, of which I am a foster mother myself. It was great to see these kids feel the character they chose, and express thoughts "beyond the print", a Six Traits of Writing Program phrase for an advanced skill in reading. I teach remedial kids all day long, and this book captured them. I never showed them the pictures so they could see the characters in their own minds. They understood how the tail lights of the car looked liked mean red eyes as it sped away.
Asking the kids if they could fit all of their possessions in a shopping bag gave many a real cause for pause.
It was a real story for kids to relate to. The next day, we made a Valentine gift for their moms. I had the best week of this year because I took a chance and jused this book. It is a must for caseworkers and foster parents.

Excellent Book
I highly recommend this book for all who want to gain understanding about life and what it means to "grow up". Just because our bodies get big, doesn't mean we become adults. Learning what it means to live as an adult, make wise choices for healthy living and gain a deeper connection with our soul, is what this book is all about. As a counselor, this book has been very helpful to many of my clients.

The most terrible time of my life was when my wife and I lost our child through SIDS. This book showed us how to deal with our guilt and sadness and may have even saved our marriage. John Defrain presents a well written book filled with a wealth of helpful insight. I beg anyone going through this crisis to please read this book!

Traditional Storytelling Today: An International Sourcebook
Published in Hardcover by Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers (1999)
Authors: Margaret Read Macdonald, John Holmes McDowell, Linda Degh, and Barre Toelken
Amazon base price: $100.00
Average review score:

A TREASURE !
Praise be to Margaret Read MacDonald for compiling these essays about contemporary storytelling around the world. Many are written by those who grew up hearing tales told around the hearth; all are solidly grounded in academic theory without (for the most part) being pedantic or jargon-y. Of special interest are the many articles about telling stories to children, a subject that has bee neglected by too many anthropologists and folklorists. Well-worth the price.

By Myron W. Collier
I have not had an opportunity to review the eight edition of Neil D. Van Sickle's "Modern Airmanship," but I can state unequivocally it is a first class publication. I was privileged to have contributed to several chapters of a previous edition and, thereby, know the accuracy and quality that goes into this book.

Fascinating and scholarly!!!
This book is wonder and a treasure trove of musical ideas from around the planet. For example, how many music historians are aware of how the Native Amercians used song to identify each of their tribes?
Mr. Titon has provided very interesting facts about music making from many world cultures. He has also produced a 3 CD sound compilation of musical examples for this book that is indispensible.
If you're tired of today's bland market of music that has sadly squashed historical music making of any kind, this book is an excellent journey into the world's most basic roots of song and music.
