A handy handbook for ethical decision making
Excellent. A practical book written by academics. Many books on ethics are hard to read because of the intellectual gymnastics required. Those written by consultants and journalists are often of the cookbook type and artificial. This book is therefore not only usefulfor students but also for businessmen and consultants. This book focuses on decision making within a clearly defined framework with good definitions of the concepts used. It also includes a very good description of relevant laws in the USA. I did not realise that laws regulate so many ethical business issues. For example " The Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organisations" provide a very good framework to any company that wants to act ethically. Business ethics as defined in the book does not include obeying the law, which I think is correct. Each chapter starts with a practical but imagined case. Many of the cases deal with breaking the law or not. For example "analyse the ethical implication of a woman having to decide whether to go to bed with her boss as that is the condition be puts on her being promoted". Or " what are the ethical implications of dumping toxic substances in the river if you can get away with it by bribing the inspector". One of the principles of the book is that it does not prescribe any solutions. I think that this is pushed too far in many of these cases. I see no point in analysing the ethical implications of breaking the law. My recommendation is to eliminate all of these cases or rewrite them. However, the 15 actual legal cases are useful. They show how difficult it can be to determine what is an ethical and what is a legal issue. The subject of moral philosophies is covered in 16 pages. The authors correctly state that it is impossible to deal with this subject in any depth. The risk with this chapter is that the simplifications made are so extreme that the reader may think he has understood the essence of this topic. That is however very far from reality. These criticisms should however not discourage potential buyers of the book. Overall it is very good.

An excellent graduate level textbook
I have used this text twice in the past as a text for a graduate level course in business ethics at a university in Southern California. I will be using it again this fall and winter. I find that it has a good discussion of theory salted with good real life examples. The long cases are a little dated now, three years after publication, but still are very illustrative. (Some still have "action" occurring even now in the real world.) Within each chapter are an "Ethical Dilemma" (short case) and "A Real-Life Situation" (two-to-three page case) that help to stimulate discussion and to employ principles learned so far in the text. My students have indicated that they like this text. Obviously I do as well!

Human Factors in Multi-Crew Flight Operations

A Book All Commercial Pilots Must Read & Own..
A father and daughter team! It is rare enough to have a flying father and a flying daughter in the real world, but sharing the same passion so intensely and to write a book together on an all-encompassing aviation Bible, (yes, this book is a Bible for aviators!) is truly unprecedented!

When I said this book covers virtually all topics concerning flight operations, I meant just that. The most important thing is; this book is highly readable, rich in reference materials and data and yet "gripping" to read! A rare gem in terms of human factor topics. I have read other CRM or human factors books by other more renowned and authoritative people but none as good as the Orladys, probably with the exception of Tony Kern, who is also just as good a writer on aviation safety.

Okay, the book covers the brief history of air transport, the industry and its safety record,, a brief history of human factor and its development in aviation,, the physical environment and the physiology of flight, as well as those magnificent flying machines and their internal environment - sort of like a trip down to aviation memory lane.

It also discussed the social environment, basic communication, documentation - including checklists and information management. It went on to discuss on the Man's limitations, human errors, and information processing. Nothing is left unturned, the Orladys went on to talk about workload, automation, situation awareness and operating in today's environment. Of course, they did not miss out on crew resource management and the team approach.

Fatigue and stress were covered in depth, plus fitness to fly, even selection and training of pilots! Most interestingly is the coverage on the challenging roles of the flight attendants, this shift in focus of our cabin colleagues was most insightful.

I loved the chapter on non-punitive incident reporting.. the CHIRP and ASRS were great success stories in UK and USA respectively, I fervently hope that SIA will follow suit in our pursuit of excellence in aviation flight safety.

Another eye-opener chapter is "some ramifications of accident analysis", this is the first time I heard of the "Stop Rule" phenomenon in flight safety investigation - find it out yourself what it means.

In the last few chapters, the Orladys talked about the worldwide safety challenge in the near future, the current safety problems and the future of air transport too.

This is not a book to be missed by any pilot who wish to enrich himself. In fact, I recommend that every single commercial pilot should own a copy for reference purposes as well.

The story of McCrae's "In Flanders Field"...lest we forget
"In Flanders Fields" is the most celebrate poem dealing with the subject of war written in the 20th century. The poet was John McCrae, an idealistic army doctor who wrote the "In Flanders Fields" during the terrible Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. The poem derives its simple but potent power from combining a respect for the fallen soldiers with a longing for peace. It is, in simple terms, an anti-war poem.

Author Linda Granfield breaks McCrae's 15-line poem into three parts, each line illustrated by Janet Wilson's paintings. In between Granfield provides information about World War I and details on what life was like in the trenches for the soldiers, as well as McCrae's experiences in his field hospital and the story of how the doctor came to write "In Flanders Fields." This book is also illustrated with archival posters, postcards, photographs, and other artifacts that put the poem in historic context.

McCrae's poem is short, but by giving each line its own page and illustration, Granfield and Wilson insure that the poem itself is not overwhelmed by background information. In fact, more pages in the book are devoted to the actual poem than the story behind it. The result is a book perfectly composed to provide young students with an appreciation for both the poem and the fallen soldiers it memorializes. It would certainly be nice to see this idea extended to other poems, but it might not have the same effectiveness as this nice little book.

In Flanders Field
I read this book while resting my feet at Book Expo 2000. At least three people stopped to ask me about it because they were so taken by the illustrations. This picture book for young people intersperses breathtaking illustrations for the poem "In Flanders Field" with background on World War I and the story of the writing of this poem. A deeply affecting and touching book, it will give young people a personal view of war, particularly this war. Unfortunately, many children as well as adults know nothing about World War I. This book is a fine introduction and a good war to broach a painful topic. By any standard, it is well-well written and thoughtful.

Perfect Timing
Book was in very good condition.
Received book in 4 business days.
Overall I am very satisfied.

should get six or seven stars
I had to pull some strings to get this book for my college freshman students because it was not on the "approved" list. It was worth the trouble! Students enjoy using this book, and they learn to write better essays, and most of them keep it after finishing my class. I love this book!

Lots of fun and spooky too!
This book is REALLY, REALLY cool! The stories are short but exciting and mysterious, not to mention true! There's an assessment at the end of each one that asks you to decide if the animal was actually a psychic or not. There are also a bunch of awesome and simple tests to determine if YOUR pet has powers! (Turns out I have a psychic maltese!) Even if you don't fully believe the stories, read it anyway. It's full of interesting facts and just plain fun!

I am the author.
This book has become a phenomenal international success and has amazed me. The strange, often weird tales within its pages startled me as I conducted my extensive research.

Anyone who reads this book can share their own Psychic Pet stories with me. I am now researching the next title in the series.

All who enjoyed Psychic Pets should have a look at my two new titles; Animals Make You Feel Better and STAR SIGNS: For You And Your Pet.

Brilliant and funny!!
This book is a hit in our house. Sometimes, in a mad panic, we've had to unshelf the entire bookshelf to find it. It's THAT popular. A funny story, cleverly done, and co'mon, look at that price! You won't be disappointed to find out Sarah is secretly planning...

Loved it!!
If you haven't seen this humorously witty book, do yourself and your children a favor and check it out! I started smiling on the first page, commiserating with Sarah's problem with her tardy folks, chuckled at her back-firing solution, and "Ahhhh"ed at the heartwarmingly lovely ending.

This is a book I WANT to read again and again!
7 Best Things ought to be a number 1 best seller! I thought I knew a few things about relationships, but until reading this book I was in emotional kindergarten. By the time I completed reading just half of 7 Best Things, my relationship quotient increased about 20 times.

After trying and trying and trying for years to deal with difficult issues in my marriage, nothing seemed to work. I was spinning my wheels. I read this book and, voila, I have confidence that this relationship will be positively resolved. Next time I'm invited to a wedding, 7 Best Things will be one of the gifts I buy. Wish I'd read it many years ago! It has given me the tools I need for my relationship. Other books haven't helped at all. My eyes have been opened. I now know what I didn't know before about having a fulfilling, adult relationship! Thank you, Linda and John Friel!!!!!

A Complete Guide for Caregiving
Dr. Miller and Dr. Bachrach have written a wonderful book. Dr. Miller was actually my daugther's ortho doctor until he took time off to help write this book. Dr. Bachrach is currently treating my daughter. I love the fact that they have made this book easy to understand and that it answers questions that you might never think to ask while you are in the clinic with your child.
