The First True Submarine
The USS Albacore, preserved today at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is the prototype of the modern submarine in all respects except nuclear power. She served the US Navy as a floating test bed for numerous technological advances including the teardrop hull, single-stick control, and the towed sonar array, for nearly twenty years. This book is based on interviews with her captains, crew members, the engineers and scientists who conceived and designed her, and the shipyard workers who built her.

A VERY good book
I brought my family to the memorial at the end of our vacation. We had a great a great time. I bought the book on impulse and was rewarded with a very interesting read.
I served on submarines (SSN-703 & SSBN 626B)and I think this is a very informative book. A must read for an submarine history buff.

Great piece of Naval history in our backyard
I have been facinated with subs ever since reading about the Hunley in Clive Cussler's book Sea Hunters, so I was pleased to find the USS Albacore only 45 minutes away from my home. I have visited her on several occasions and have wanted to know about her history for some time. This book gave me just what I wanted! The photos are a great part of the book, especially the ones of her arrival in her final resting place in Portsmouth, along I-95 and Rt. 1.

rock em....then sock em...
A really invaluable referance guide to the sport of boxing. If you are a real afficiando of the sport or like myself, just a casual fan it doesn't really matter. This book has all the information that you could want. All the champions from the various weight classes are here. Each boxer has a record of all of his fights, and a (surprisingly) entertaining overview of his career. Wether you are checking out a specific fighter for a specific fight, or just want a few moments of reading. This is the book for you. From the heavyweight super stars that we all know, to the 98 pounders that could tear the most 'macho' of us apart before breakfast, this guide has them all. Informative and VERY intertaining. But it, read it, and revel in the history of the "manly art" You won't be dissapointed.

Outstanding reference book on boxing history & records
The authors and the International Boxing Hall of Fame based in Canastota, NY deserves a lot of credit for this excellent contribution to boxing - "the sweet science". This is a treasury chest of information on boxing history, fighters records and inside stories in a handy book format with lots of great photos and illustrations. Whether you want to know about the sanctioning bodies or the weight divisions, the records or the biographies of the fighters inducted into The Hall of Fame, you will find it all right here.

Content data, records and biographies about the fighters are divided in three main sections: 1- the early pioneers from bare knuckle brawlers to the Boston Strong Boy; 2- the old timers when the sweet science becomes an American passion; and 3- the modern era when boxing waxes and wanes but the grear stars shine. Names like James Figg, John L. Sullivan (The Boston Strong Boy), Max Baer, Jack Dempsey (The Manassa Mauler), Jack Johnson (the first african-american heavyweight champion from 1908-15), Gene Tunney, Joe Louis, Archie Moore, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali (The Greatest) and many other great fighters, they are all here. You will also find information about boxing's supporting cast with names like Gil Clancy, Cus D'Amato, Angelo Dundee, Lou Duva, Don King, Arthur Mercante and others. Additionally, there are short essays on the governing bodies ruling the sport, the seamy side of boxing scandals, the influence of television in the sport, etc.

In conclusion, this is an outstanding source of reliable information on boxing as well as on individual fighters in a handy, manual, illustrated book format for a very reasonable price.

A must have!
This book gives great biographies on all the great fighters. This book is great for a person just getting into boxing or a long time fight fan. I think you should definately buy a copy.

Classical Mythology
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (2001)
Authors: Mark P. O. Morford, Robert J. Lenardon, James Morwood, and Edith Euripides Hall
Amazon base price: $57.00
Average review score:

An excellent resource
I have quite a bit of experience in the study of Classical civilization, and I have yet to find a better source for information on Greek and Roman mythology. I think this book is a necessity for anyone wishing to learn more about ancient religion or to anyone who needs a reliable reference for this subject.

Great introduction to the topic
Everyone should own a copy of this book. It is the best sophisitcated introduction to classical mythology that is out there, and is filled with useful illustrations.

Great Beginner Book
Morford and Lenardon set out to write a pretty comprehensive mythology text for those just starting a study of the subject and I think they've done a fantastic job. The most recent edition features tons of artwork and brings recent research in classical mythology and archaeology into the discussion. Also, the book is written in a highly engaging style that draws the reader in. You tend to forget you're reading a textbook. My only complaint was that I didn't feel some gods and goddesses were really covered. However, they were usually minor characters in Greek myth, so don't let that deter you from this book. It's worth the price!

Truth About WWII
The Truth About World War II

This is more than a story of the racist attacks-court-martials, violent mobs, lynchings-that were the real face of the U.S. "war for democracy." It's a story of how Black workers fought back (including many GIs), based on news articles from the socialist newspaper, The Militant. Learn how the "March on Washington Movement" swelled in response to Roosevelt's racist imperialist war. Glimpse the heroism of the participants in the protests and uprisings, which have been erased from the official history books. Their courage is part of the heritage of today's working class. But this book is the only place where you can find it truthfully presented.

Capitalism, racism and the living strugle for human rights
This is a wonderful collection, an essential part of the history we need to know to understand American capitalism and racism, the fight for Black liberation and equal rights, and working class struggles as a whole. The protests and campaigns described here were an essential foundation for the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and should inspire us to continue the fight today.

Here are some 150 articles, pamphlets and political resolutions, a week-by-week account of political developments and struggles during tumultuous years of the 1940s. They come from the socialist newsweekly, the Militant, and are written by working class leaders seeking to build on the labor battles of the 1930s and to deepen the fight against racist oppression.

The articles document instances of police brutality and killings, lynch-mob murders of Blacks, and the pervasive racist discrimination in employment, housing and the military. But above all, they record, analyze and promote the fight against these conditions. The success in uniting Black and white workers to smash Henry Fords anti-union stronghold and bring the UAW to Ford Motor Co., the mass protests of the 1942 March on Washington Movement-- and the bitter opposition of the Roosevelt administration to this anti-racist movement; the 1943 Harlem rebellion against killer cops-- "A protest against intolerable conditions;" its all here to learn from and be inspired by. An extensive chronology and glossary will help today's reader understand this history all the better.

Malcolm X's of World War II
The US that waged World War II was a racist country, fighting to preserve its own ability to segregate and exploit African Americans, defending and trying to get a piece of Britain, Belgium, Holland, and France's Racist exploitation of hundreds of millions of colonial slaves, and to hold on to its oporession of Latin America and get as big a piece of China, Vietnam and other countries and Asia as they could. Could there be any wonder that at home, battles were fought by African Americans against racism, in housing, in jobs, in access to health care and education, just as they were fought before and after the war and continue to be fought. It is not wonder the SWP fighter and leader who is the principal author and editor of this book was chosen by Malcolm X 20 years later to be the person who edited and helped to publish his writings. These fighters were the Malcolm X's of their time....

About the book
Also known as Hellcatraz, journey through the now deserted corridors of the world famous penitentiary. Visit the cells which once held "America's Most Wanted". The history does not begin or end with the use of Alcatraz as a prison, for it was known to Native Americans as a place that contained evil sprits. Ghostly manifestations and paranormal sightings have occurred since it was used as a defensive fortification in the 1850s. The pain, isolation, punishment, and resulting deaths appear to have been indelibly etched in the walls, cells, and corridors of this legendary prison --- Read the book and find out abot the ghosts of Alcatraz from an ex-warden's wife. Enjoy!

Hollywood Songsters: Singers Who Act and Actors Who Sing: A Biographical Dictionary 2nd Edition, Three Volume Set

Authors: James Robert Parish and Michael R. Pitts
Amazon base price: $275.00

A Treasure Trove of Delight
Film historians James Robert Parish and Michael Pitts's "Hollywood Songsters" have outdone themselves with this handsomely designed three-volume set that is worth every penny. Filled with rare photos, "Hollywood Songsters" has comprehensive, accurate and fascinating entries on over 100 "singers who act and actors who sing." The lives and careers of everyone from A to Z or June Allyson to Mae West are covered in intriguing and fact-filled detail. Who would have thought that such an indespensible reference book could also be a page-turner. Once you start reading this treasure trove of information it is hard to put down because of the insider tidbits and behind-the-scenes facts that fill the well-written pages. As theater and film critic and lover of musicals, I find this a most wonderful addition to my library as well as a great read. The filmography and lp and CD bibliography on each singer is unparalled. Bravo to Mr. Parish and Mr. Pitts!!!

A totally indespensible three volume delight!
This is an informative and delightful set that has information on Hollywood songsters that can be found no where else. Each entry has a wonderful picture accompanying. I have spent many, many happy hours pouring over the entries and learning facts about my favorite stars. This is a must have for all libraries and any scholar of musical theatre or musical film or just popular music of the 20th century. Well worth the money! It is clear that Parrish and Pitts have done their homework, but even clearer that they have a love for the subject matter and it shows on every page. As a songwriter with a love for the field, I use this book constantly.

A LABOR OF LOVE THAT MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED
This project has to be a mad labor of love on the part of the authors -- how else / who else would produce a 3-volume directory of singing in the movies? We must applaud and support the authors for this massive work -- I can't imagine it not being definitive -- by urging local libraries to carry it. A database like this should be available to everyone!

An outstanding example of military art
Images From The Storm will appeal to two audiences: those who appreciate treatises on early military art and those with an interest in the Civil War. The Virginia Historical Society unearthed a treasure trove of photos by Union photographer Robert Knox Sneden: this shares his handwritten memoir and a sampling of his storehouse of nearly 1,000 watercolors, sketches and engravings about the war. An outstanding example of military art.

Civil War Artwork like you've never seen!!
If you love to see pictures from a fascinating time in American history, this is your book. The details and the description really put you there to experience what was happening. No flowery, romatic view of war from this guy!! This book provides
extra pictures that were not included in "Eye of the Storm".
Don't miss this piece of history.

A Fresh Viewpoint
Private Sneden, a survivor of the Civil War was long forgotten when this was published recently. What is so vital about this book is that it is untouched by politicians, generals, and other propogandists of that era. Furthermore it is done through the viewpoint of the artists eyes, and done by his hand - without the editorial expections of the time.

It is so refreshing to see this long studied subject being given a fresh viewpoint from someone who was actually there.

Recommeded for any serious student of the Civil War.

Simply the best
The best trading book I've ever read. This is not for the faint of heart or the trading beginner. There is a ton of info very well explained and you will need to re-read this several times to truly understand it. I recommend hand charting your own profiles everyday in a spreadsheet and then analyze what happens when the market opens in the value zone, out of the value zone but in yesterday's range, or completely outside of yesterday's range. Eventually you will be able to figure out what the current day will "look" after the day opens with remarkable accuracy. I was almost tempted not to review this publically, since this in my opinion is as close to a Holy Grail as you will get.

Very clear, very good.
The Market Profile has been around long enough for there to be quite a bit of information available for free, in books and in courses. I've read all I can on the web and after reading this book, the Market Profile is finally becoming clear. This book is helping me see how to watch what the other participants are doing based on what they are doing. I'm reducing my reliance on after-the-fact, price-based indicators. It's really a method of trading with the market, instead of following it and being late.

This Is A 'Must Own' If You Are Involved In The Market
I purchased this book in order to gain a better understanding of CBOT's 'Market Profile'. And the book certainly provides that. But it goes far beyond - this book also teaches you "read the plays" and does so in simple steps...taking you through novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, right up to expert trader. I gained an understanding of the importance of the opening call, what to watch for at the open, how to identify control and when it might be changing intraday, how to identify the extremes of the market, the types of auctions, what to look for at the close, day timeframe pattern recognition, evaluating institutional activity, knowing when to stay out of the market, and value area calculation. The information contained in the 'Directional Performance Relationship' table is worth the price of the book alone. The book is easy to read and understand..and the information contained within is quite unique.

This is Our Exile
Father Martin has written a very good book. The strength of the book lies in the way that the refugee's stories are presented. Father Martin does not parade their hardships and poverty before us in an attempt to provoke our sympathy or guilt. Rather, Father Martin presents us with real people who love and live. We come to know the people in the book as people, no different in their humanity than you or I. On the surface, this is no great insight, but I think we tend to objectify the exiles of the world in order to keep our distance from them. Father Martin does not let us do this. We come to know and care about the people in this book very deeply. Of course, this opens us up, as readers, to a deeper sorrow and (hopefully) a deeper understanding of how too many people live. But it also opens us up to a greater experience of God and how God works in the world. This book is a slim volume and easily read, but the spirutual insights are deep and meaningful. This book should be read by all of the idle and self-involved inhabitants of the "first world." You will never be able to look at a disposable plastic cup in the same way again.

What an amazing book!
I'm planning on going on a missions trip to Kenya this summer, so I was really searching for a book that would give me insight on the people of that region, not just the normal tourist information. This book blew away all my expectations. Not only did I meet the refugees through James Martins engaging narratives, I also felt like I knew them and could really identify with their hardships. The stories grew depressing at times, but such is life in East Africa, and that fact only made their faith and hope more amazing and inspiring. Martin was often humorous and candid, and I felt myself trying to cheer him along on his journeys as if I was right there with him.
This our Exile is a good read for anyone interested in East Africa and it's people who are often ignored and under represented. 2 giant thumbs up.

Touching, funny, real, inspirational--a gem of a book!
In this engaging book, a young Jesuit recounts the trials, tribulations and rewards of his two-year stint among the refugees of East Africa. He describes in vivid detail true-life vignettes of strength and hope in the midst of grinding poverty. But this book is far from somber--rather, it's full of laugh-out-loud humor combined with an evident love of the author's fellow man. A great book!!
