As a longtime reader of Cthulhu Mythos fiction, I was heartened to see this volume of Jim Ambuehl's work in between covers. Each tale here is solidly based in the Mythos, with the addition of the author's Lu-Kthu cycle, adding some entities to the pantheon. Some are reminiscent of the old Creepy and Eerie black&white mags, all are well-told and most bear the author's singular satirical stamp. Each tale also has an illustration (these are just ok). Robert Price in another of his long intros makes a comparison between fanfic and pro fic, most of which makes sense (this is supposed to be the first of a number of fanfic authors' anthologies, but it's the only one I've seen). Well-worth the buying if only to get Mr. Ambuehl enough sales to be encouraged to do more work in the Mythos. I'm familiar with his work from the various online sources, and am always pleasantly diverted by his fiction.

H. James Harrington, Glen D. Hoffherr and Robert P. Reid argue that creativity is not reserved for the few. Bidinotto has put together one of the best one-stop resources on the criminal justice system. The book offers detailed criticism of our criminal justice system and sound fix-it proposals, endorsing the view that the criminal is *responsible* for his actions, and should be dealt with accordingly. Bidinotto, an essayist and journalist who has written for Reader's Digest and is currently on the staff of the Poughkeepsie-based Institute for Objectivst Studies, writes with particular incisiveness and clarity about these issues in essays providing the connective framework for the anthology. He proposes his own "retributive" theory of justice to displace the rehabilitation theories that discount the criminal's responsibility and have swamped the justice system since the 1960s. Other standout contributions include those by criminologist Stanton Samenow, and philosopher David Kelley. Although the name of Ayn Rand is never mentioned in the book, both Kelley and Bidinotto are clearly influenced by her conceptions of justice and individual responsibility. A must-read volume for anyone interested in what the problem is with our courts and prisons. ****

This is the eleventh book in Chaosium's Cthulhu Cycle series. This volume features tales of Lovecraft's most well-known creation, the octopus-headed entity, Cthulhu. Included are the foundational stories (i.e. "The Call Of Cthulhu" by H.P. Lovecraft and "The Black Island" by August W. Derleth), some rare reprints (i.e. "Some Notes Concerning A Green Box" by Alan Dean Foster) and some interesting new stories of Cthulhu in the modern world (i.e. "Rude Awakening" by Will Murray). In any collection the stories are of varied quality but I enoyed the majority of the works collected. If you are a reader of Lovecraft's Mythos fiction then this is a must for your library.

This is a good book for every one involved in orthopedics, even a surgeon or a orthopedics resident fellow, this book is very easy to guide a doctor to find the most acuratelly point to a right dyagnosis. I am an orthopedical surgeon and I use this current as a help to find a tip on my busy daily practice. You may buy it with confidence.

"Dan Stuart's Fistic Carnival" appears to be a slight history of a long-forgotten boxing match at first glance, but Leo N. Miletich has undercovered the real significance of this event. The heavyweight Championship fight that gambler and "sport" Dan Stuart tried to bring about set off reactions that reverberated from state capitols to the Capitol Hill. These events occurred in 1894, at the height of the Gilded Age and the beginning of a great progressive movement in America. Dan Stuart of Dallas, TX promised he would set up a series of boxing matches which would bring revenue to Dallas and the chance for some serious wagering. Stuart unwittingly stirred up a political and religious hornet's nest as his attempts to stage the match were thwarted in Dallas, El Paso, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico. In fact state and national political leaders took unprecedented action and haste in drafting and passing legislation to prevent the "fistic carnival" from taking place. Then, as now, many people considered prize fighting immoral, and judged the crowds that such a spectacle attracted as the dregs of society. However, Stuart was just as determined as his opponents and he was going to keep his word at all costs. The story that follows mirrors today's events: some people still protest boxing and deride its followers; boxers still do their best fighting in the press with their mouths and demand hugh sums of money; and it's still foolish to try to draft moral legislation for a vocal minority. The actions taken by the governor of Texas left many contemporary observors shaking their heads and wondering if that's all the governor of the largest state at that time had to worry about. Unfortunately, the same things still occur today. Stuart, the self-professed sport and gambler, comes out of all this as a decent guy who promised a big fight, and who means to keep his promise without ending up in jail or dead. How he does it is the basis of some of the most fun reading I've had in years. In the long run, this story isn't really about boxing, but about how fruitless it is to try to legislate an issue that's morally unpopular with some, but treated favorably, at worst indifferently, by the majority. Miletich deserves special praise for his abiltiy to tell this story in a fresh manner, liberally using contemporary newspaper accounts and editorials. Highly recommended.

It's been there since 1995, and I was WAITING for s.th. like this! DSS in original language, a reference! Why has nobody recognize this? For now I'm in low budget, bus as soon as I get enough fund I'm going to buy a copy of this, and write a proper review. But if this is the complete text in original language, it's a must for everyone who wants to examine the DSS seriously.

Students of debate will love this book that clearly weaves together the essential characteristics of great oratory. This is the only debate text that I've found that provides a practical guide to debate tournament administration as well as the structure of debate itself. Professor Branham focuses on "policy" style debate, but "Debate and Critical Analysis" is still a must read for rhetors of any stripe

Robert Cecil, Chief Secretary to King James I, sees Papal intrigue under every rock. However, he especially feels the opportunity is perfect to consolidate support for His Highness against the growing espionage presence of the Catholic enemies, Spain and France.

While the foreign spies agitate the oppressed English Catholics, Robert seeks proof of sexual depravity against his most dangerous foe Sir Francis Bacon. He assigns Henry Gresham to obtain the evidence that will fry Bacon. He quickly learns how the agitators inadvertently strengthen the position of their greatest oppressor Robert with their anti-James plots, notably a scheme to blow up Parliament and replace the Scot with a Catholic on the throne. Keeping his own confidence, Henry soon realizes that the diabolical Cecil hired the leaders, Guy Fawkes and Thomas Percy, with an apparent double cross in mind to "earn" the favor of the King. Already in danger due to his secret Catholic beliefs, Henry wonders what to do with what he learned because Cecil will gladly string him up along with the other "traitors".

THE DESPERATE REMEDY: HENRY GRESHAM AND THE GUNPOWDER PLOT is a fascinating novelization of a critical moment in English history that vividly provides the audience with a deep look at surviving the civil religious squabbles that engulfed the English throne in 1605. The story line is cleverly devised so that the history with real people is interwoven into a superbly written espionage plot. Fans of historical tales including romance readers though there is no love story will immensely appreciate Martin Stephen's delightful retelling of the Gunpowder Plot.
