A Funny, Weird & Wonderful Book
After Reading This First Novel By Che Elias, I Can Say That I Enjoyed It Very Much. Elias Juxtaposes Two Separate Stories, One Written In An Irregular Prose And The Other In A Song Lyric Type Verse. And Though They Don't Seem To Be About The Same Things At First, The More I Thought About it... They Were Both Really About The Last Remains Of Suburbia And A Lucid Coming Of Age Tale Which Recalled Both James Joyce & Thomas Pynchon's Writings And Also William S. Burroughs In Particular Too. This Was One Of The Best Experimental Books That I'd Read In A Long Time, I Wonder What The Author Will Publsih Next?

comments from the author
I wrote this book because I love the Rockies, and I wanted more people to know about their geologic history, climate, vegetation, and wildlife. The Rockies preserve some of the last, best patches of undisturbed wilderness in North America. They provide an oasis of cool, moist climate, flanked by prairies on the east, and by deserts on the west. As such, they provide refuge for thousands of species of plants and animals that are adapted to cool climates. The wildlife of the Rockies has to be tough to survive the long, cold winters, but at the same time the Rocky Mountain ecosystems can be incredibly fragile. My aim is to inform you about the wonders of the Rockies, in hopes that you will catch some of my enthusiasm. So whether you are an avid hiker/camper/outdoor enthusiast, or an 'armchair traveller,' I hope you'll enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Brilliant!
I am not familiar with three of the gentlemen who are responsible for this book, but I am fortunate to have known one of them: Dr. Sal Primeggia. I was privileged to take his course, THE ITALIAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE in college in the 1980's. An extraordinary course delivered with intense passion and conviction by a very extraordinary man.

I congratulate Dr. Primeggia and his fellow scholars on this wonderful piece of work, and encourage readers, especially Italian-Americans (although let's not limit it there), to devour this awesome book.

I hope Dr. Primeggia sees this review because I want to tell him in this rather public forum that those who have participated in the aforementioned course shall never forget his words and his lessons. Many generations of students owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for what he has given and indeed continues to give.

What a legacy to leave behind. Thank you, Dr. Primeggia!

Must-have advanced text on harmonic analysis.
This appreciated book constitutes since its first printing one of the finest references on advanced harmonic analysis and some related topics. The author, one of the leading experts in the field, exposes clearly most of the general background as well as recent results, orienting the reader directly to the current trends in research.

The book is valuable not only for harmonic analysis speciallists, but for every mathematician who wants to get well trained in some important and subtle topics of analysis which are shown by this approach as being closely related, leading the reader to a deep and thorough understanding.

The contents of the book are: Some fundamental notions of real-variable theory; Singular integrals; Riesz transforms, Poisson integrals, and spherical harmonics; The Littlewood-Paley theory and multipliers; Differentiability properties in terms of function spaces; Extensions and restrictions; Return to the theory of harmonic functions; Differentiation of functions; Appendices: Some inequalities; The Marcinkiewicz interpolation theorem; Some elementary properties of harmonic functions; inequalities for Rademacher functions.

Includes motivation and detailed explanations for each topic, excercises for each chapter, called "further results", which are small research projects on their own, and extensive references. The printing and the clothbound are exquisite.

This kind of material should be included in every graduate mathematics program. Should read companion "Introduction to Fourier Analysis on Euclidean Spaces" (another jewel) by Stein and Weiss, and later the recent volume "Harmonic Analysis" also by Stein, both reviewed by myself.

A "must read"...if you want to be a masterful reader!
Reading has been...and will always be...my passion, and I read voraciously. Hence, I always scout for and pursue high-performance reading techniques. It is now my lifelong learning pursuit. I approach them with an open mind as my primary focus is on what works for me, with playing, exploring and experimenting as my evaluation tools.

This is one book, I must say, contains the best and most comprehensive collection of text organisational (writing) patterns I have seen so far. In a nut shell, understanding and mastering text organisational (writing) patterns at the onset after your initial preview allow you to navigate the given text at very high speeds.

In total, this book introduces eleven (11) patterns:

- enumeration pattern (listing);
- time sequence;
- example pattern;
- cause & effect pattern;
- problem & solution pattern;
- compare & contrast pattern;
- spatial pattern;
- definition pattern;
- process pattern;
- classification pattern;
- description pattern;

In any kind of reading, a quick preview is imperative. This book also introduces you to a variety of preview techniques, just like any other reading technique books.

Understanding the text organisational (writing) patterns makes your preview much more efficient and effective.

All information has shape. Just take a close look at the word INFORMATION. The root word is FORM. So, if you want to read fast, you must learn to shape or form your understanding quickly. If you can see this FORM at the onset, it becomes much more easier for you to understand how the information in the given text is organised. With this understanding, it become easier and also faster for you to pick out the key ideas or details.

The author has done an excellent job in illustrating all the eleven text organisation (writing) patterns. There are also a lot of reading exercises or practices for you to play, explore and experiment with the patterns. They are really worth the cover price for the book.

I teach kids and teens as well as adults how to read at very high speeds. In other words, I help them to survive...and thrive in...the information overload! From my own personal and professional experiences, the purpose of reading is to GATHER INFORMATION...IDEAS to be more precise. I always advise them ...using Pareto' Law...that 80% of the meaning of any given paragraph are often captured in only 20% of the words...these are the key ideas! (In fact, I have read from somewhere...an empirical study...that 4 to 11 % of any given text contains the key ideas!)

Knowing how to discern text organisational (writing) patterns in the first instance gives you the turbo boost to locate the key ideas very quickly and eventually navigate the reading texts at very high speeds.

If you combine these reading techniques with mindmapping or using graphic organisers and/or other visual tools, your ability to organise and synthesise ideas...and generating insights...from all your reading become very powerful.

So, if you want to be a masterful reader, just like me...this book is a must read!

Teresa: A Woman: A Biography of Teresa of Avila (Suny Series in Cultural Perspectives)

A masterpiece of imaginative biography.
A novelist most of her career, the late Victoria Lincoln spent years writing this carefully researched and intuitive portrait of the greatest of Catholic Saints (my own opinion)and the founder of the discalced Carmelite order of nuns. Teresa was poorly understood in her own time, and canonized for the wrong reasons, which is why she continues to be misunderstood by most people today. In a recent book on leadership, Garry Wills referred to her in a dismissive manner that revealed his own ignorance of her life, an ignorance promoted by the very church that claims to revere her. Working from Teresa's writings, including her letters (and reading skillfully between the lines) Lincoln convinces the reader that here was a human being for all times, a woman of very human impulses and emotions who transcended her limitations to explore the very nature of faith, asking questions of herself that would terrify most of today's public "Christians". She also had to face the constant threat of the Inquisition, who on more than one occasion came close to condemning a woman who would someday become an icon of the Spanish Church, along with her friend John of the Cross. The book is so painstaking in its recreation of Teresa's life that it can be difficult to follow at times. Lincoln not only has to tell a story but to make a case for her interpretation of it, but her humor and empathy, the quality of her research, and the painful beauty of her prose more than reward the reader for persistance. Some Catholics may be shocked at the revelations in the book (Teresa may have been less than chaste as a novice, and was falsely suspected of sexual misconduct later on), but this is no tawdry expose but an honest look at a woman who in spite of her conviction of her own unworthiness, strove for an ever closer communion with God, without ever losing sight of her humanity. You should meet her; read this book.

Excellent over all
I have a ton of herb related books,what they are and how to use them, but this book is the one that is always within arm's reach. It is comprehensive, easy to understand and also tells you of possible side effects of using a particular herb, which alot of books don't provide. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about improving your health with herbs. In fact, I'm ordering five copies today to give to some friends.
