Another score for NOLO Press!
Hi, me again. I filed chapter 13 and converted on over to 7. THis was a very good book as well. Had the conversion form in it. VEry handy. THis one had all the legal forms I could think of to use, great instructions. Actual examples on how to fill them out. questionnaires, and check list. I had all my bases covered here. It is very informative on the automatic stay. Where creditors, can not mess with you anymore. One called so much, they woke up the baby.:( Made me mad. )With these nolo books, I also learned how to file a complaint against these creditors. It really help with eliminating some of the old debts. We really needed to seek this relief. I was able to restart, my economic life again with this relief. It happens to the best of us. Don't be embrassed. THe excemptions were very informational and iron clad true. THey were listed in the back of the book. I used these for my state. I totally trusted what was in the NOLO books. They did me proud. THerefore I was able to keep what I had listed under what exemptions nolo had listed on the list under federal and state exemptions. I guess I was able to totally depend on this book start to finish. I didnot have to go anywhere else, or seek any other forms. It was like one stop shopping. I must say, a judge commented on my organizational skills and asked where I learned to do this, and my work was as good as what has come out of some attorneys office. I said, I thank nolo for this. I happened to have the book with me as a referece. I can depend on NOLO books for what ever comes up, civil. The book gave me the self esteem I needed to actually pull this representing my self off. It was not that bad. Actually it was a challenge. I am now on the high road to financial recovery. Thanks to NOLO press. By the way, doing this on your own is alot cheaper than hiring a attorney. It save me bunches of money. Difference between this one and others, don't even bother with other books. I think the difference with this one, is nolos reputation. I can count on when I buy their books it gets me thru what ever jam, I have encounterd. I have represented myself on several occasions by using nolo books, for self help. Even if the book is a later edition, still iron clad, as far as forms go. I used a 4th editions forms. I had purchased this one a while back before I purchased this one. I tell you I was the envy of my buddy pals. ONe buddy paid tons of money to a local high power attorny, and I still think I came out better. Just really think it thru, on represnting your self. You can do it with this book. THis one also fits anywhere, even one time I threw it in the glove box, cause I had like errands to run, once, it was shoved into the center consol of my truck, even had green beans, from the baby spilled on this one a time or two. Still was in great shape. What is it about NOLO books that take a licking and come out looking great. MUst be the way they are made. Tuff durable. GOtta run, I am being paged by the baby.:) Later, Betty Hogges PS. YOu don't have to be a high power attorney to do this, or someone with a high education. this was a very user friendly book, one for all and all for one book. Very equal opportunity read. Easy to understand. I didnot feel like a idiot using this book. I also didnot have to ask outside questions.

True, true true, iron clad it works!
I must say, I read this book and ripped the forms right out of the back of the book, and filed a emergency Bankruptcy (BR. I it worked.! The emeregency br worked.! To my total amazement. Anyway, I also used chapter 13 book as well. I was able to handle the 13 and convert on over to a chapter 7. I was able to save my truck, and draft a payroll garnishment right on out of my hubbys paycheck. This was the only way these folks were getting paid. Then some issues arose, and I was able to draft my own interderagatorys. YOu have to check these out. Some of u out there say the book is out dated. It made no difference as far as info. and forms are concerned. U should be greatful for these kinds of books. I found that standing in line to file my paper work behind some of my cities most high power attorneys was just thrilling. There is really nothing to be nervous about at all doing your own civil work. I received more help than I could have imagined. ONly advise I have to give on this particular book. Don't be in a rush. Wait till the little ones are in bed, and read it start to finsih. The judges, were great. NO one chews you up and spits you out, like everyone thinks. I had a few buddy pals of mine say, how can u do this on your own? U have some nerve. What if u make a mistake. Well I did make a few, and I just corrected thru a amendment. No big deals. I did learn why attorneys charge so much. Now I do have alot more respect for their profession. I must admit, It was kind of fun, and a challenge to see if I could do it. U don't have to be a scholar either, or say, I can't cause I don't have a education. I don't have one, just high school, and a bit of tech. school. I did it just fine. I even had one judge tell me my paper work was as good as some work coming from local attorneys offices. I was even asked where I learned to do this paper work, properly! I of course said NOLO! Try this, represent yourself, it save time and money. U will get a great sense of how our legal system really works. ONly other thing I can say, be sooooooooo nice to the court clerks they can make or break u. When I was told I had to wait to file a motion, I said no problemo. I had packed a sandwich and a drink and sat down and read my latest book. I ended up waiting 45 minutes, , I was thanked for waiting. These gals/guys are so swamped. B compassionate. U want them 2 b with u. I had so much help, because I was representing my self. If you hang out long enough up there, u may get free advise. When a attorney offers a free b, sit down, shut up, and listen, and take notes. I did. Hee Hee. :)So tried and true, this is one a must have. Next to my bible this is my favorite one. Size of book is great, fits, in handbags, diaper bag, even on a bike with grocerys. I even spilled coffee on mine on the cover,it didnot stain. Well enough said, check out what I have to say on how to do your own divorce with child support and alimony. :) and a wage garnishment for child support. Did this one too with Nolo books. No other book comes close to NOLO. So don't waste hard earned cash on any one elses. They don't compare to NOLO.

Complete informatin, though needs to be updated
Excellent and complete resource - I would wholeheartedly recommend this book. - Kristy Welsh, author of "Good Credit is Sexy."

Legal Research : How to Find & Understand the Law, 7th Ed
Published in Paperback by Nolo Press (1999)
Authors: Stephen Elias, Susan Levinkind, and Janet Portman
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $0.94

A simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide
Now in its tenth edition, Legal Research: How To Find & Understand The Law by attorneys Stephen Elias and Susan Levinkind is a simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide to the extremely complicated and tricky topic of doing legal research. Individual chapters address how to properly frame questions in legal categories and efficiently look up relevant laws and case history. Legal Research is emphatically not a substitute for a consultation with an attorney; however, a close reading followed by judicious use of its fact-finding methods is a superbly effective way for non-specialist general readers to prepare themselves before sitting down with a billed-by-the-hour consultation with a licensed attorney or paralegal researcher!

One of the best available
If you have a modicum of introduction to the law, and need a guidebook on "how to" go about researching a legal question, this book is one of the best available. It does assume that you have some working knowledge of how law works, but is an especially good book for either first year law students or paralegal students beyond their introductory courses. Well worth having on your shelf.

Minor Correction To Review of Martin Diosdado
I made a Minor Error....Section 18-9-111 of The Colorado Revised Statutes is a Class III Misdemeanor. By "Practice" alone, you will not be allowed access to a Court-Appointed Attorney or a Public Defender. By "Practice" alone you will be forced to complain to your District Attorney by means of "The Barker Test" about your lack of a Speedy Trial without using Profane or Vulgar Language - and about the D.A.'s not inforcing your State of Colorqado and The U.S. Constituttion's requierment to your being furnished a Court Appointed Attorney when you cannot purchase one. Don't forget to "Stand Mute" at any Arraignmment" that in the "Street Jargon" the Court of Colorado uses in calling your Arraignment a "First Appearance". After all, how can you enter a Plea of any kind withour your Contitutional Right to the Protection of a Defence Attorney? Don't forget to ask your Deputy D.A. for his/her business card so you can write the same "Barker Test" each week...to remind them that they went to a Law School of some kind, and are thought to be, by many, the Premier in Educated Minds in North America!

Once you are done with "The Barker Test" and have somehow acquiered a Public Defender, to write the Defender that you will have Letters of Memorandum to remind this Defender of what was said. Note that no one writes notes of conversations any more, and your Defender will need all the help you can give them! Please do not use much in the way of Latin Phrases, as this may scare the Defender into a Default or Reset mode....

Once you realize that you can do this as well as any attorney, be very afraid as your do "Discovery" from the D.A.'s office to find out what they have. Many Defenders are very busy

I don't know anything better.
I have never known better literature. I myself am not a good writer so I'll just say is this: Canetti heightend my sensitivity towards life - fundamentally. His autobiography showed me how complex and interesting life can be, if you see it through a mind like Canetti's who is able to describe his perception in a more profound yet boad way than anybody and who chose a corresponding path of life. I'm glad I read him while still in college, because otherwise I had not known how narrowminded I really was before I met Canetti.
My favorite book.

(PS. English is not my first language so please excuse whatever you don't like about my writing.)

A Genius Way Ahead of his Time
I first read Auto-da-Fe on the recommendation of my German teacher at school. Even then, I was astounded by Canetti's humour and intelligence. I was delighted to come across a rather shabby hardbound copy of The Torch in my Ear on sale for £1.00 outside Surrey County Council Library recently.

I settled down to reacquaint myself with Canetti and, like a reunion with an old friend, I was overjoyed to rediscover his warmth, his wit, and his searing intellect. For such a clever man, though, Canetti is still aware he has a reading public eager to hear tales of the famous names, with whom he rubbed shoulders during his very brief time in Berlin. To learn that the great George Grosz was indeed a misogynist and Brecht a slave to fashion gave me that wry smile that I remembered from reading Canetti before.

For anyone wanting to gain a really deep insight into Central Europe in the 1920's and 30's, this is the book to read and not the titillating, ever-so-British accounts of Christopher Isherwood.

a perfect piece of literary fiction
what a book, what a writer! having read plenty of literary autobiographies, i am still stunned at the depth and insight of these three volumes. the first, tongue set free, is the most lyrical; the other two focus more on young canetti's developement as a writer and thinker. such is canetti's art that only after reading the books several times the reader notices all the things he is not told... although this autobiography is a great source of enjoyment to everyone who is interested in literature, it should be read with a bit of caution: never to forget that this is, despite everything, literary fiction. i am not implying that canetti is lying (he is not), but he has more purpose than just presenting his times and lifes, and some scenes (like the describtion of café museum) seem to be just describtions while they are full or literary quotes etc. i think it is this that sets canetti's work apart from other writers of the era.

A fabulous book about love, life, and being true to oneself
This very powerful book had themes reminiscent of many others. In a way it reminded me of The Catcher in the Rye, On the Road, and Narcissus and Goldmund, in that is was a man's search for his place in the world. In this book, however, the main character, Evangelos Arness, is looking for liberation and being true to himself. At the beginning of the book, he is a a financially successful ad man who has a 'respectable' and 'comfortable' life, but he realizes, somewhere between women and unconcious suicide attempts, that he is nothing that he set out to be. So, he sets out on a journey to burn down what he had become and rebuild what he wanted to be. His trip to liberation is dark, often humorous, and sometimes sad, taking him through his past, his family, and insanity. This is the kind of book, much like the ones I named above, that becomes a part of you.

you indentify easely with the protagonist
The main character in this book is in the middle of a " middle-life crisis ", he struggles between what he has, and what he has dreamed of. The characters are so real and you identify yourself easely with the main character. I am reading this book now, ... I have read it before with the same passion and books like this one make you think and you can't stop reading it. Sometimes the whole night ! read it send your comments to gabs_goldberg@hotmail.com

the best novel I have ever read and I read a lot!
kazan's personal experience is related to the reader in a very funny novel form. Many insights into the absurd arrangements we humans make with our mates. highly recommended because of content and funny dialogue!

Canicula: Snapshots of a Girlhood En LA Frontera

Deceptively complex book
Cantu addresses the harsh realities of racism, poverty and Viet Nam without bashing you over the head with strident platitudes. The framework structure coupled with family album snaphots make the book fascinating and truly accessible for a variety of readers. One need not have grown up in los dos Laredos or along the U.S.--Mexican border to identify with this work; one need only be aware of the variety of borders constructed or imposed upon our lives.

A powerful account of a Chicana/o community in Texas
This is a beautifully written memoir by one of our best Chicana writers. Seizing upon Roland Barthes's writings on photography, Cantu reconstructs her childhood on the U.S./Mexican border, teaching us that the border itself is an artificial barrier. This is a moving story of an American family that has worked hard and sacrificed much. We can only hope that the rest of America will recognize sooner than later the enormous contributions to U.S. history made by Mexican Americans.

A FINE EXAMPLE OF ETHNOGRAPHY.
THIS IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF ETHONOGRAPHY. SHE TOUCHES THE HEART AND EXPANDS THE SOUL. THE SECTION CALLED TITO, BRINGS THE PAIN HOME. A FANTASTIC DEMONSTRATION OF LIFE AND HISTORY ON THE FRONTERA

A very fundamental study of Man
Canetti's monumental work is at the same time, frightening, awe-inspiring, shocking, numbing, believable & unbelievable . Strange though it may seem, it requires a deeply individual experience to understand 'Crowds and Power'. For, according to Canetti, a crowd is not just a bunch of people. The concept of crowd is ontologically prior to Man. In one of the most illuminating books ever written, Canetti takes one through two of the most important traits that have shaped Man's destiny on this planet - the formation of crowds and the facet of power. Hence, this is not a book about crowds. Its about Man.

The kaliedoscopic journey for the reader includes a vast range of topics from Australian aborigines, pueblo indians, jivaro indians, etruscans to ants, monkeys, kangaroos to Islam, Christianity, Judaism.

Some aspects of this book might sound unbelievable( like laughing being a substitute for eating..I believe it though)...but I can only quote what Blake wrote in 'Proverbs from Heaven and Hell' -

"There is no truth that can be understood and not be believed".

Read this book. It could be one of the most important things you might be doing in your life.

monumental, weird, funny, sobering
That the author won the Nobel may suade the reader one way or another. But as this work is what got him the prize, which to me says the Nobel must be worth something. If you don't know Canetti's work, you won't get the impression from the title that the man is incredibly funny. But he is. And yet his brand of humor comes only from surgical-precise observation of the ordinary. Canetti is the Montaigne of our time, of modernity, bearing all the marks and scars of our age. If Canetti's prose has the disarming rambling style that we associate with Montaigne's, it also has the latter's power to draw out the most unexpectedly profound from the ordinary. Sort of like old fencing masters: they never run, never sweat, are never fancy, but they always beat you to the jugular. All the scholarship, all the discipline is hidden, like the hull of a ship that keeps the whole thing afloat. In this book, without torturing language, Canetti tells you more about the nature of power than Foucault, and more about the nature of crowds than a room full of social psychologists. (That such a feat is possible ought to be a sobering lesson in itself!) Canetti's book is a wonderful mix of the potentially tedious (kangaroo behavior) and the...funky. For example, in describing the psychology of mass fear as it relates to its twin, the desire to out-survive others, he cites unexpected examples: burial customs in rural India in which a strenuous attempt is made to appease the spirit of the child if it dies a preventable death; the peculiar madness of Roman emperors; and the Viking warriors' tradition of piling up a mound of stones before going into battle. Each warrior brings a stone and adds to the pile. After battle, each warrior removes one stone, thus leaving a mound of stones that would represent the dead. Contemplating by the fire the remaining mound was immensely satisfying to the survivors, apparently. Canetti's notion of the crowd is never just a bunch of people. Canetti defines crowd as a cumulation of small units into a large ensemble, causing it to become something entirely different from the units that make it up. He sees nature as the teacher that taught man to behave as a crowd, as a liquid. For example, for the Germans, it is the forest with its innumerable trees, standing vertically, that has inspired the German soul since time primordial in its aspiration to become a marching liquid. For the Arabs, it is the sand of the desert. For the Dutch, it is the threatening sea itself. For the Mongols, the wind. Etc. Canetti's prose is muscular, never bloated. Given that he was a man of letters, and not an anthropologist, it may be of some significance that his lifelong project -- it took him some 30 years to write this book -- was shaped by his lifelong preference for a world as envisioned by the ancient Greeks and the ancient Chinese in matters literary, moral, and philosophical. His science is the science of a man confident in his experience and aristocratic power of observation. Canetti never sets out to convince. He has nothing to sell. It is his style to simply put it in front of you, and then leave. Take it or leave it, but this book will never leave you once you begin it.

A profound yet accessible work about crowds and power
Over twenty years in the making, this book is a must read for anybody who's ever been disturbed by destructive crowd behavior or the horror of tyrannical rulers. Insights into crowd psychology and the pathology of power are supplied through a wealth of material from such diverse subjects as anthropology, psychology, biology, religion, and literature. However, what emerges is no mere dry academic treatise, but an absolutely fascinating journey through topics such as the rain dances of the Pueblo Indians, the finger exercises of monkeys, and the hallucinations of alcoholics. Even if you find yourself disagreeing with some of the author's conclusions, you will still find yourself looking at the world in new ways. For example, I will never watch the public actions of an orchestra conductor without trying to glean insights into the nature of power. In short, this is one of those rare books which makes old, dull things you've known for years suddenly stand up in a whole new dimension.

A superb historical and romantic adventure
The Elusive Rake is a rousing Regency romance that will provide much pleasure to readers. The resplendent details bring the era to life even as they help propel the plot to its steamy climax. The lead protagonists add much heat as well as intelligence to the story. Marcy Rothman has captured the flavor of nineteenth century London. Her strong female character conveys a look at not only women's roles of the time, but the spirit of one at odds with that role. The attention to detail provides us with delicious escapism while also enlightening the reader about the social mores of the period. I rate this book five stars.

Can't wait for the next book
I loved this book! Marcy Rothman does it time and again. I am an avid reader of Ms. Rothman and can't wait until the next book comes out. The characters of Lady Jane and Lord Alexander really come to life. It really is a must read book.

The perfect heroine
Really fun to read, great romance. I love all of Ms. Rothman's books that I have read. Lady Jane is the perfect heroine. If they make a movie of it I would like to see Gwyneth Paltrow as Lady Jane.

Very funny and wise, too!
A book that is just as funny for adults as it is for teens. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and could see where teens would cringe when well-meaning adults acted in what they thought were "cool" and "hip" ways. I've done it myself many times! A great, breezy read.

A great mother's or father's day gift!
To Teenagers: these are all realistic things that embarrass you or annoy you. You'll be able to help your parents out a lot. To Parents: you can't deny that you do these things, so pick up a copy and help yourself and your kid. They'll thank you for it.

This is the best one-liner handbook of the season
Everyone should read "How Not to Embarrass Your Kids". Parents with teens will love it. Teen agers themselves will howl. A must-read by two Huck Finn type of sixteen year olds. Simply sensational one-liners!

A great book with a great chance to learn
I found this book not only an unbelievable book to read but also a book which I learnt a lot from. As I am learning about the Holocaust in school now, it was good to hear a personal story from the horses mouth(so to speak) of what actually happened. Often when you hear stories they are changed each time they are retold, like the game broken telephone. But when you read a book which was written by the person who was the actual survivor, you know it isn't going to be all distorted and something you can actually learn from. I am still unable to comprehend exactly how it all happened but it did so now we should make sure that the story of the Holocaust is told to the future Jewish and non-Jewish generations to come, to make sure it is never forgotten. Also to make sure Holocaust deniers don't convince people that the Holocaust never happened as they are very persuasive with their stupid lies. Unfortunatley one day we won't have any survivors left and that is why we need to educate the future which is my generation and the generations that follow. So I recommend if you haven't read this book to read it and if you have or once you finish, recommend it to everyone to read. Ruth Elias is not only a fabulous author but a fabulous and heroic person. She is someone we should all look up to.

Heart renching decision!
Triumph of Hope, takes the reader along with Mrs. Elias as she lives through her every day encounters. The pain and suffering, and also the humiliation that the Huppert family endures leaves one with a heavy heart. But the pressing memory that I have of this book, is the decision that Mrs. Elias was forced to make in order to save the life of her beautiful baby girl.

Excellent Book!
Ruth's journey into the world of hell and horror leaves one feeling riveted and emotionally drained. A real "must read"! I had the priviledge of meeting Ruth in Israel last summer and she is a remarkable woman.
