Extremely touching
Robert Sexton's poetry seems so simple, yet is so moving. His poems aren't long, but mean so much. In this book, his poems are about fathers, mothers, sisters, friends, and significant others, and combined with his painstakingly exquisite artwork, move me to tears each time I read them. Definitely buy this and share with anyone for whom you care deeply.

AN OUTSTANDING WORK! I WAS DEEPLY MOVED ,
For anyone with a sensitive heart, I cannot imagine a better gift than this book. The emotion which runs through these pages is so simply expressed and so genuine that it is almost possible to overlook the fact that this --- at its core --- is a wondrous work of art. There is a natural quality to Robert Sexton's prose and drawings that I have never experienced on paper before. Reading it; seeing it was like witnessing the best parts of my own life again, as if they had been lost in time, then suddenly carried back by Sexton's mind and heart and pen. I have begun to make a list of all of the people I haved loved in my life, and I plan to share this book with each of them.

quilt art
a book with a text written by one of the most important art critics. Finally quilts seen as art pieces. An incredibly beautiful collection of amish quilts to show you the world of this religious group artistic crafts. If you look for new ideas for your quilting palette, don't miss this book.

An excellent investment for lovers of Amish quilts.
Amish: The Art of the Quilt by Robert Hughes chronicles the quilt collection at Esprit corporate headquarters in San Francisco. Begun haphazardly by Doug Tompkins in 1971 as a way to cover bare office walls, it has evolved into a showcase of exquisite examples of Amish artistry.

Robert Hughes writes a concise history of the Amish people and their distinctive quilts. But best of all are the 9" by 9" full-color plates of 82 representative quilts. Julie Silber, who became the collection's curator in 1983, shares her comments on each quilt, pointing out its adherence to or deviation from Amish tradition.

This book represents an excellent investment for all lovers of the vibrant colors and intricate stitching so characteristic of Amish quiltmaking.

The Art of Biblical Narrative

A most fascinating introduction into how to read the Bible
Robert Alter's The Art of Biblical Narrative is the sort of book that comes around once in a generation. For the most part, modern Biblical scholars are divided into two camps - homileticists, who tend to reduce every story in the Bible to a moral, and source critics, who chop up the text into various sources. Alter goes a third way. Alter's thesis is that the literary quality of the Bible has been sadly overlooked. To atone, so to speak, for this glaring omission, Alter sets out to show how the narratives in the Bible, even if constituted from a redacted text, nevertheless exhibit exquisite literary qualities. Alter convincingly demonstrates that if we overlook the art of how the stories are told, then we miss much of their meaning.

Alter reveals various techniques used by the Biblical writers to make the stories so compelling. One technique is the reserve of the narrator who often leaves unspoken the motives of the characters, thereby drawing us into the story by compelling us to try to supply what the narrator has withheld. Wordplay, the skillful repetition of words and phrases - so often lost in translation, connects seemingly disparate narratives into a fascinating montage. Type scenes, similar settings and stories such as meeting a future spouse at a well, play off each other, inviting the reader to compare and contrast what happens in one scene with its counterpart and to find meaning in these similarities and differences. The often laconic and subtle remarks of the narrator tend to support or undermine the words spoken and poses struck by the characters, which most of us will miss unless we learn to read the stories closely.

Perhaps the most delicious part of Alter's book is his frequent recourse to the stories themselves in order to demonstrate his points. For example, Alter begins his book by examining the story of Judah and Tamar that falls in the middle of the Joseph story. Tamar, you will recall, was Judah's daughter-in-law. His son and her husband dies and the other brothers do not fulfill their obligation by levirate marriage to carry on the dead son's name by fathering children with Tamar. Tamar ultimately rights this wrong by seducing Judah and conceiving two children by him. Alter reads the story closely and convincingly argues that the story has been woven tightly into the Joseph story by various narrative techniques so that it becomes the fulcrum upon which the stories hinge, making Judah a different person in time for his momentous meeting with Joseph in Egypt. Alter's treatment of the Judah and Tamar story alone is worth the price of the book. Buy the book and read it, you'll never regret having done so. In fact, you'll find yourself rereading it over and over.

A fresh perspective of the Bible
I am a bilble seminary undergraduate from Hong Kong. After I read this book, I found a new perspective (and interest)to read the Bible---the narrative way. Alter helps us to analyse the underlying narrative motive of the Bible writer, which we usually missed

Required reading for anyone working with clients!
This is a great book for ALL levels of experience.
If you're just starting your career as an account executive this wonderfully outlines many things you can do to instantly improve your client relations. And if you've been working with clients for a long time this will serve as an invaluable reference. You shouldn't just read it once, but over and over again!
It's a quick read that can make a huge impact on your career and clients.

Great book if you don't already have it
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ALREADY OWN "BRAIN SURGERY FOR SUITS." This book is excellent, but it is almost the exact same book as "Brain Surgery for Suits," another book by Robert Solomon. When I saw that he'd come out with a new title, I was very excited to purchase his new book. But when it arrived, and I saw that it was the same thing as the old book, I felt robbed. I can't be the only person this has happened to.

Lovely! ...A must own...
Like his art, Caulfield has held this book to his high standards. The organization of the book is well planned, starting with an inspirational biography of his triumphant life overcoming poverty and rising to international acclaim. Caulfields unique painting style and astute observations capture a romance too often overlooked in today's fast-paced life and convey an innocent feeling of days-gone-by. Covering over fifty years of his work, the nearly 120 paintings are vividly reproduced in chronological order. It is particularly interesting to see the subtle evolution and refinement of Caulfield's style over time. Accompanying almost every picture is an insightful description written by Caulfield as he remembers back to painting each picture. After receiving the book I read it four times and felt compelled to drive to his gallery in Woodstock (Vermont), book-in-hand, to meet Mr. Caulfield and see his paintings in person. There I was first greeted by his wife Marilyn while he walked from around his easel to say hello. He was happy to personalize my copy while we chatted amongst his beautiful paintings....yes, I came home with my first "Caulfield" painting that day and it's in his book. This first edition book by such an inspired artist is a must own for all art collectors and/or anyone who appreciates the beauty of art and life. I would also recommend visiting the artists website, and if your inWoodstock, VT visit his gallery where he and his lovely wife Marilynwill greet you at the door.

Stunning -- I was shellshocked!!
I was browsing over the covers of many art books and this one caught my eye. I ordered it, and once I did I was in for a stunning visual and emotional experience. Caulfield gets you going right from the cover page, with the little white house in the middle of autumn enticing you to read more. After reading the emotional life story of Caulfield, I was treated to his earlier works. Stunning color and values along with the distinct impressionistic style that only Caulfield can exert are what follows all the way to through the book, from cover to cover. When I was done, I was shellshocked. I read it again. Then I read it once more. I can reccomend this book to the casual art fan all the way to the hardcore collector, and having been up to the Caulfield Art Gallery in Woodstock, VT recently, I can tell you that as immersive as the book is, the gallery is just that much more so. Way to go Robert O. Caulfield, on your way to being one of the greatest American Artists of all time!

great still images, even better when animated
i am a choreographer, and i bought this book in 1997 during a trip to d.c. my idea was to create transitions to get from shape to shape, so that a really romantic/sensual duet would evolve from the photos.

the images are well designed -- the lush, warm colors evoke a romantic setting, and the models are beautiful. the instructions are clear, and the illustrations demonstrate anything that might be confusing. it's a wonderful book that will get your creative and bodily juices flowing ;)

Why I had to buy another one!
Hi, my name is Cassandre and I bought this book about a year ago when I first started getting into yoga...it sounded great for me and my husband to turn it into something more fun! I can't tell you how much you will love this book if you are sharing yoga with a loved one. My sister snatched mine off my bookshelf one day and said she would borrow it and now refuses to give it back she's having so much fun with it! It has lovely photos, clear descriptions and great yoga positions that channel amazing energy between you and your mate! It is completely user friendly and can be understood easily for a beginner to a pro at yoga. It simply offers a few more additions to yoga that can include your lover for a completely sensual experience! At any rate, I am now buying myself another copy...these are things I do not want to forget! Wonderful Book! Highly recommended!

Uniquely valuable - fills two gaps
This book addresses two technical domains that should be complimentary, but rarely are: (1) network and infrastructure maintenance and management, and (2) applications and systems QA.

For the network infrastructure and maintenance domain this book provides a structured testing methodology that includes the key elements of both quality assurance and release of changes to production. For applications and systems testing teams it gives the necessary technical details for effectively performing applications and systems testing in a distributed environment. Too often the applications test group is called upon to conduct performance testing of distributed applications and miss some critical factors that should have been included in the test plan and associated test cases. The cause of this oversight is a lack of technical information in the application testing body of knowledge, which this book corrects.

What makes this book especially valuable is the emphasis on availability, application response and reliability. These are essential elements of service level agreements and the author does not lose sight of that fact.

I especially like the way the book starts by putting testing into a business and technical context. The eight chapters that comprise Part II of the book provide a structured test methodology that is completely consistent with testing best practices in the applications and systems test domain. This gives network and infrastructure professionals an effective and proven methodology, and gives their applications and systems colleagues a familiar point of reference because network testing has grey areas that overlap their domain.

Part II will be familiar territory to network professionals and is in many ways the heart of this book. The test cases provided can be templated and used in real life QA efforts, adding value to this book. Part III is where the overlap between network and applications testing becomes apparent. The material provided in the chapters in this part are filled with invaluable information that will enable applications and systems test professionals to develop viable test plans and cases for "footprint" testing, performance and application response testing in distributed environments. This is where the book becomes valuable to both groups. Part IV, Test Tools, is obsolete and can be safely ignored.

This is an outstanding book that should be in the libraries of both network maintenance and support groups and applications and systems QA groups. The approach provided is straightforward and is focused in the right direction - on availability and reliability in support of service levels.

Best book available for network test design
The Art of Testing Network Systems provides the professional network tester blueprints for designing, implementing, and understanding the results of network testing. It is an easy to read useful reference. I would recommend it to network testers, test managers and end users charged with understanding test plans.

Best Out There
I had to give this book five stars because it is the only comprehensive work devoted to Arthur Hughes. I have been attracted to Hughes' paintings for some time, but he has recently become a part of my graduate research. To my surprise, there is little research out there. Even though he did not achieve the critical acclaim of other Pre-Raphaelite artists, he is considered a major artist in the Movement. Granted this book is mainly in catalogue form, but this section contains hard-to-find information. It's also great for listing past exhibitions of individual paintings and newspaper/journal/book leads for more information. Lots of black/white reproductions and some nice colors ones. The analytical introduction is shorter than I would have liked, but the comprehensive catalogue is a great asset.

At last a book devoted to Hughes.
As a serious student of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their associates, I have noticed a curious lack of materials regarding Arthur Hughes and his work. This is perhaps due to the unfortunate destruction (evidently) of much of the papers and materials that would give better light to his biography, as well as his partial detraction from oil painting to produce much illustration work. No less important, in truth, is likely the fact that he was not one of the most successful of Victorian age painters. However, the charm of coloring and subjects in his unique style certainly warrants a serious treatment and _Arthur Hughes: His Life and Works_ is an admirable and well-produced effort. Not only that, but it is the only one that I have yet to discover. With this fact in mind, I can only give it the highest of recommendations to anyone fortunate enough to have a similar taste for his work. The reproductions are excellent, the biography informative, and the content far more complete than the fragmented references to him to be found elsewhere.
