Complete & extensive work on rf technology
After you read this book you will think that Jackson's 'Classical Electrodynamic' is brief and easy. I was required to learn for my job the physics of waveguides.
I purchased this book because it was recommended by Jackson. In fact Jacksons chapter on waveguide is a summery of what you can find it here.
Although very difficullt to read you can find all information about guided waves you need. I was never required to go beyond this book.

The "Divina Commedia" of Applied Electromagnetism!
Simply staten this is one of the finest books ever written in applied electromagnetics. There is a deligthful analytical treatment of everything related to wave-propagation in waveguides. But Mr Collin is not a dry-hearted teacher ,he is able to explain very complicated mathematical instruments with a very clear and fresh approach.Expecially good is the Green Function's treatment which is the best i ever saw in any book.Reading this book you will be able to progress from the intermediate to the very advanced level in Applied Electromagnetism. While it is true that nowadays there is a lot of software around that analyses almost every conceivable structure,it is also true that a analytical study gives you the possibility to sort the important from the accessory ,a thing no computer system is still able to do.I reccomend this book to anyone interested in advanced Electromagnetism.Only bad point is the price ,which is too much high expecially with the weak Euro we have now .On the whole a "top" book:5 stars!

Field Theory of Guided Waves (2nd ed.): A Goldmine !
Briefly, Professor Robert E. Collin's revised text (Field Theory of Guided Waves) is a goldmine for those who want to do serious work in applied electromagnetics. This book is not addressed with aspiring physicists in mind, but rather directed at electrical engineers who are engaged working in radio wave propagation, scattering and antennas. The author covers a whole slew of topics like TEM waves, Surface waveguides, function theoretic techniques, waveguide and cavity excitations, inhomogeneously filled waveguides and dielectric resonators etc. and etc. There is a good amount of analytical material relegated to the mathematical appendices.

What is different in the second edition (from its earlier 1960 edition) is the most profitable chapter on Green's functions (ch. 2 of the book). This chapter runs from page 55 to 172 - that is about 127 pages. Prof. Collin, like an articulate storyteller, covers most of the important aspects of Green's functions that an engineer may need to know. This chapter was missing from its 1st edition and hence its inclusion in the 2nd edition has increased the book's worth several fold.

To use the book profitably, I suggest that the reader work through carefully chapters 1 and 2. Also, because this book is intended to be a graduate (advanced) text, the reader muts have a good background in the undergraduate engineering mathematics that EE students are required to take at most universities in USA and abroad.

Excellent working reference with outstanding sample problems
The first edition was a required college text, but I kept using it so much the cover wore out! The chapters are well laid out, and the sample problems really bring the main concepts into the real world. Every colleague to whom I have shown this book has been impressed.

handy reference- especially for new grads!
This book was required for my first course in mechanical design and I've kept is as a desk reference at work. The book is well organized and practical. The techniques outlined in the later chapters apply good design techniques and provide usable information for machine component designers. I recommend this book to anyone requiring a mechanical reference.

fantastic engineering handbook-a must-have!
This book explains in detail how a good design should be carried out, is easy to read and to use. It really makes engineers happy they chose to be what we are!

Much more than the picture book I expected.
Terrific. A sleeper. Full of intriguing Hollywood golf lore and L.A. land history. Captivating photos, but what kept me up late was the text that brings the pictures alive. I found this a surprisingly substantive, well researched piece of work: a topical history of L.A. from an oblique angle--the conception, building and peopling of the city's great golf courses and golf clubs. On top of that it's an eyeball on the entertainment world through the leveling prism of golf: Stars, producers, directors striving to shine or at least //look// good at the maddening game. Easy, amusing writing. Who is the scratch-handicap actor who plays with his shoelaces untied so as not to overswing?

Not Just For Golfers
I thoroughly enjoyed the great photos, and the interesting stories in this book. It's rare to find a golf book this entertaining, and well-researched.

An entertaining and historical golf book
I loved the photos, and thoroughly enjoyed the stories of Hollywood's elite. For golfers like me who play the local municipal course, I wish I could tee it up on these great courses, and swing away with the stars!

This is a great book about all types of additions
Louie Anderson once again brings the struggles of his life to print, and opens up his heart and soul. I found this book even better than his first. I hope he decides to keep writing, he is very talented at bringing the reader into his situation.

Excellent, Entertaining, & Eating too
Funny and poignant, from Anderson's heart and stomach are a guide to life, coping, eating, love, comedy, and performing. Also manages to be downright hilarious with straight-ahead stand-up comedy. Somehow it all works. And very nicely, too. Inspired and inspiring.

Wonderful, sad, emotional
Louie Anderson does a wonderful job of revealing the true self. Especially the dialogue where he becomes Jumbo the elephant. He never mentioned a Love interest (human, not food) who could be support he so needed during these transitions he struggled with, the treadmill, death of his mom, selling the home, etc. Louie remains a real human, down to earth, complete with dysfunctional family. It was difficult to see him as the superstar wealthy comedian image we see. Whether it is food or some other controlling addiction, low self-esteem, children of alcoholics, pained school years, many can relate to his struggle. A good book by a funny man!

The Grafter's Handbook

Author: Robert J. Garner

a propagator bible
An excellent text, written with passages about the width of some garden rows wide enough for work horses. Tt is written for the self reliant gardener, with recipes for grafting wax, and descriptions of tools used in grafting. Only one short fall, it is written for seasons and weather in england, and has limited information on specific plants. A book that always will be close at hand.

Excellent and very thorough coverage of grafting.
Aimed at the serious amateur or professional. Covers a broad range of grafting techniques and issues. As a person who taught myself grafting by reading books, I found this book to contain a lot of useful information and be interesting to read.

Truth in Advertising
Just what a beginner would need to start in the esoteric field of grafting. Short on specific advice for types of trees, which would take a much longer work

A Passionate guide for would be rose growers.
The author's passion for roses shows on every page. The details on soil, nourishment, planting location, climate are highly valuable. Even creating new roses is covered. The photos and history of every selected plant show lots of devoted research. The listing of Rose nurseries and organizations saves lots of planning time. Love that book.

Hardy Roses earns its space on my bookshelf!
This book is as useful as a reference as it is lovely to look at. Growing roses at my home in USDA hardiness zone 3 limits choices to a few shrubs found at the local garden center, but 'Hardy Roses' provides well-organized lists of additional choices one can find in catalogs. Want a rose that smells divine? Use the charts that indicate the degree of fragrance. Require disease resistant varieties? The lists tell you which ones are easy to keep healthy. Equally valuable are the lists of catalog suppliers, because chances are, these varieties won't be available at the local outlets. Cultural information is here too, but seems slanted toward shrub rose growers rather than us die-hards determined to grow hybrid teas at any cost in impossible conditions. Along with Ortho's 'All About Roses', 'Hardy Roses' is the most-used of my 20 or so books on roses, and is a very good value. I recommend that after you receive it, keep a dust cover on the paperback version so you can carry it around shopping with you without damaging its pretty cover.

The best book on growing hardy roses in cold climates.
This book inspires cold-climate gardeners to grow roses. The writing is clear and easy to understand and the photos are beautiful. It covers information from where to plant your roses (including a discussion on microclimates) to growing to starting roses from seed and cuttings. It reviews over 100 hardy roses and is written by someone who knows and loves roses. Great for beginners and seasoned rose growers

New Zealand HIAI Monthly email Newsletter <nzhemp@es.co.nz>
This is a monumental effort, 220 page plus book well laid out and researched with heaps of references and an easy to follow index of pests and diseases plus biological solutions as the title indicates. Members may recall that John McPartland in fact all the authors were very helpful to NZHIAI some time back regarding MAF's (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries) request for information regarding industrial hemp pests and diseases. By NZ standards this book is quite pricey (NZD 150-00 plus landed) That said I would suggest if you are re serious regarding growing industrial hemp this book will become as it is rapidly for me "Your bible." There is so much information my head is spinning. It is attractively bound and could well become a collectors item. No problems with NZ customs. In a word it is BRILLIANT. A credit to the authors. It can be obtained from the website below. Only took a week to get here.

Review from CC Archives <cannabis@overload1.baremetal.com>
Hemp diseases and pests An amazing new tome on cannabis cultivation. from CC On-line, by Pete Brady

Here's the perfect recipe for a book about cannabis: use three authors who have spent decades studying cannabis horticulture, combine them with an international publishing company, and give them enough resources to create an oversized book with professional citations, illustrations, and binding.

This perfect recipe has produced a gorgeous new book, HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS - MANAGEMENT AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL. The authors - Dr. John McPartland, Robert Connell Clarke, and David Watson - are premier marijuana researchers whose credibility and breadth of knowledge are legendary.

McPartland is a medical doctor, botanist and cannabinoid researcher. Clarke is the author of two epic texts, MARIJUANA BOTANY and HASHISH!. Watson runs HortaPharm, the Dutch cannabis breeding consortium supplying specialty cannabis to UK med-pot research projects conducted by GW Pharmaecuticals.

HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a fascinating, practical book, and an upcoming issue of CANNABIS CULTURE will give a more complete summary of its features. For the purposes of this brief online review, however, I assure you that this book will significantly increase yield, efficiency and quality for any marijuana grower who follows its advice.

The book includes photos that help growers diagnose dozens of plant dysfunctions, including enemy insects, mites, mammals, and fungi, environmentally-caused problems, overwatering, and nutrient deficiencies. It tells growers how to protect their crops using biocontrols instead of toxic chemicals. It describes ideal soil components, harvesting guidelines, and curing procedures.

Although HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is not intended as a "grow book" that focuses on lighting, security, and clandestine techniques, its scope, accuracy and detail make it an incomparable textbook that every marijuana grower should have. It is interesting and entertaining, immaculately presented and organized, and features the most innovative and reliable techniques for keeping your plants healthy and happy.

HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a large, 251 page, professional book with a professional price. It's well worth it. When I grew my own marijuana, I was often puzzled by plant problems. If I'd had this book, I could have easily eliminated those problems. HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS will likely increase the yield of your garden by at least 50%- if that's not worth, I don't know what is!

overwhelmingly thorough
Having only been able to get an overview of this imposing tome, I came away thorougly impressed. for by far the most comprehensive book on the subject, this book should become indispensable. in a field dominated by the likes of ed rosenthal and jorge cervantes, it's nice to see a work that's more academic than either e.r. or j.c. are inclined to churn out (not that they don't provide a great service to the public as well!) if you've got the time, and are serious about cultivation, this work will resolve a lot of nagging questions and issues you might have in a professional, well-organized fashion.

Hollywood Songsters: Singers Who Act and Actors Who Sing: A Biographical Dictionary 2nd Edition, Three Volume Set

A Treasure Trove of Delight
Film historians James Robert Parish and Michael Pitts's "Hollywood Songsters" have outdone themselves with this handsomely designed three-volume set that is worth every penny. Filled with rare photos, "Hollywood Songsters" has comprehensive, accurate and fascinating entries on over 100 "singers who act and actors who sing." The lives and careers of everyone from A to Z or June Allyson to Mae West are covered in intriguing and fact-filled detail. Who would have thought that such an indespensible reference book could also be a page-turner. Once you start reading this treasure trove of information it is hard to put down because of the insider tidbits and behind-the-scenes facts that fill the well-written pages. As theater and film critic and lover of musicals, I find this a most wonderful addition to my library as well as a great read. The filmography and lp and CD bibliography on each singer is unparalled. Bravo to Mr. Parish and Mr. Pitts!!!

A totally indespensible three volume delight!
This is an informative and delightful set that has information on Hollywood songsters that can be found no where else. Each entry has a wonderful picture accompanying. I have spent many, many happy hours pouring over the entries and learning facts about my favorite stars. This is a must have for all libraries and any scholar of musical theatre or musical film or just popular music of the 20th century. Well worth the money! It is clear that Parrish and Pitts have done their homework, but even clearer that they have a love for the subject matter and it shows on every page. As a songwriter with a love for the field, I use this book constantly.

A LABOR OF LOVE THAT MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED
This project has to be a mad labor of love on the part of the authors -- how else / who else would produce a 3-volume directory of singing in the movies? We must applaud and support the authors for this massive work -- I can't imagine it not being definitive -- by urging local libraries to carry it. A database like this should be available to everyone!

An outstanding example of military art
Images From The Storm will appeal to two audiences: those who appreciate treatises on early military art and those with an interest in the Civil War. The Virginia Historical Society unearthed a treasure trove of photos by Union photographer Robert Knox Sneden: this shares his handwritten memoir and a sampling of his storehouse of nearly 1,000 watercolors, sketches and engravings about the war. An outstanding example of military art.

Civil War Artwork like you've never seen!!
If you love to see pictures from a fascinating time in American history, this is your book. The details and the description really put you there to experience what was happening. No flowery, romatic view of war from this guy!! This book provides
extra pictures that were not included in "Eye of the Storm".
Don't miss this piece of history.

A Fresh Viewpoint
Private Sneden, a survivor of the Civil War was long forgotten when this was published recently. What is so vital about this book is that it is untouched by politicians, generals, and other propogandists of that era. Furthermore it is done through the viewpoint of the artists eyes, and done by his hand - without the editorial expections of the time.

It is so refreshing to see this long studied subject being given a fresh viewpoint from someone who was actually there.

Recommeded for any serious student of the Civil War.

I liked it anyway . . .
Peter was my professor and I had to read the book for his class, but I liked it anyway. It was very interesting and concerns an issue that is very important in today's world. It is even an easy read for those outside the academic world (unlike books by certain other professors I could name). Thanks, Peter! And go ahead and get Nina that American Girl.

World's greatest book.
I am the author's daughter and I think this is a wonderful book. It inspired me so much I wrote a song about Don Roberts, the co-author. Go out and buy the book. Dad will be happy and I will get another American Girl!

Good, readable distillation of the research
This is a good book! It thoughfully distills all the current research on the effects of popular music on teens and does so without the hype or hysteria of the press. Required reading for anyone who has concerns about the effect of music on youth.
