An Academic's Attempt To Dissect A Genius
At last - a compelling arguement for the genius of Townshend
It's great to finally see such a balanced view of Pete Townshend's career as a songwriter. This book certainly isn't for everyone, but for anyone interested in post-war popular music, and definitely for Who/Townshend fans, it's worth taking a look at. Smith's academic presentation may be a bit cumbersome at times, but generally his adherance to a narrative structure and even-handed presentation of Pete's oeuvre wins the day. "No other artist in history of popular music has achieved the artistic scope of Pete Townshend's career," Mr. Smith concludes. Amen to that.
The Newest Townshend
A brilliant exploration of Townshend's ideas and longings. This book is entirely refreshing--neither a pop bio nor an academic treatise, but something better. Gives us real insights into a serious songwriter's vision. A balanced view of the business and the art behind one man's maneuverings. Required reading for those who take rock seriously.

Good, Not Great
This is "must have" for anyone going for their Extra Class license. The problem with the book is that the writer assumes you have a previous knowledge of electronics and math. It's "heavy" with math, which is a bit odd since most VEC exams only include two or three math questions. The theory part is also loaded with some information you'll never see in an exam. I would recommend the Extra Class manual from W5YI first, but since there is still a wealth of information in the book, I'd still recommed getting it. The Extra Class exam is "tough" so you need all the information you can get your hands on. A few other observations, the writing style is "DRY" with some difficult syntax and there are some editing errors, but since it's the first printing, these things happen. The ARRL has been helping Hams get their licenses and upgrades for around 90 years so inspite of the basic difficulties with this book you really need it as a resource and refrence even after you pass your exam. BTW, when I took my Extra Class exam, I was actually so stressed, their was sweat dripping off my face. I passed first time though. Good Luck !! :-)
A great reference
I bought the three Wolfgang's Books, Now you're talking! the General Class and the Extra Class License Manuals, I took my Techenician and Morse code Exams in October, 2002 and I had a Perfect score, and on the 15th of December 2002 I took both the General as well as the Extra and in both exams I had a Perfect score 100%. I think the results speak for themselves!!

The author reveals
Northeastern University Press was kind enough to furnish two copies of this book to me and I saw exactly what several reviewers seized upon when they wrote on this collection of essays. Yes, the essays are not very well connected, as more than four people contributed bits and pieces to this work. No, the polish one normally sees in collections of this nature is missing. However, the themes that comes through are that race-class politics have and continue to be big part of the abolition movement of the death penalty in the United States. Unlike my colleagues, I am supporter in theory of punishing bad people who do terrible things. Unfortunately, executions in the US are undeniably flawed, fraught with corruption, and dependent on the worst sort of UnAmerican bias possible. After viewing my own book, I was again sickened by the evidence that innocent people have met their deaths at the hands of a governments that use my money and do their dirty, incompetent business in my name. Any real American should be outraged by the idea that the greatest system of justice in the world is being undermined by individuals who use executions to pave their personal career paths. When one remembers this, it is truly difficult to worry about a few factual errors or some editorial mistakes. If you are supporting the death penalty in the United States you had better think again-it's a serious mistake that is killing people. The condemned are not heroic or even innocent, just small people who make very serious mistakes, but it does not mean that they should be executed because they are poor, black, or without influential friends and families. If anyone doubts this logic just count the number of middle class or rich people on death rows in the country and you will know that abolition is the only answer possible if fair treatment is ever a reality.
(1/03)-If anyone cares, New York is soon to use its capital punishment law for the first time in several decades where a man will die at the hands of the state. This is no reason to celebrate. It's another example of a politician (Pataki) who used the lives of the poorest individuals among us to capitalize on. Governor, I hope you are happy.

I Wanted More
Audio Systems Technology Level 1 provides a basic platform for understanding the installation process of audio systems. While the information is well written and easy to understand, as a person with real world knowledge of audio systems, I was expecting more technical information. So if you are a Sound Engineer or DJ with road experience, you might want to start at Level 2. If you are a raw recruit in the audio world, this is a great book. The format is excellent, with quiz questions at the end of each chapter, a chapter on first aid and safety, and information about where to take tests to become a certified Audio Systems Installer. I know I will be purchasing level two and level three.

This is a story about a lot of things!
When I'd heard reviews of this play during its Broadway run, most reviewers either loved or hated it. It's not as bad as has been said, and actually reaches into hysterical in many points. It tells the story of 2 brothers who come to be extras on a Biblical epic [filmed] in the 30's in the Arizona desert, and end up both falling in love with the Assistant Director in charge of the extras, and become the director and star of the movie, "Exeunt Omnes". The 3 principals are supported by an ensemble of 3 actors who play everyone from an Egyptian Dancing Girl to Executioners to Hollywood costume designers. I would have to rate this script high for performability and for the humor in it. The characters are written strongly, and have very distinct personalities, and the story is entertaining, with some interesting absurdist touches, and I would recommend this to anyone who likes a sly comedy that can be outrageous at the same time.

It's okay, I guess
It's a pretty good boook to get you oriented with visual basic and learn some simple visual basic commands. When it was writen they were using windows 3.1, so if you're using Windows 95 there is a couple things that might confuse you, but nothing major. It doesn't cover a broad range of topics, so it's best to use just to get started. I would recommend it to a beginner, but it's not the best book in the world

Subsurface Transport and Fate Processes
I've used this book when researching abiotic and biotic processes and for modeling transport and fate processes. Chapter 8 covers the applications of transport and fate information with tracer studies, remedial technologies (i.e., cyclic pumping) movement of LNAPLs into the subsurface. Appendix A presents physical, chemical and fate data for priority pollutants which I have found helpful. Overall this is a good text and is a useful reference.

Every student should read this book to apreciate freedom
This is an valuable book telling the story of a minor rebelion three years before the Texas war of independance in 1835-36. It tells the story of govermental abuse of a people who will not take it, let alone tolerate it. it tells of the horror of war and the debate it takes to start a revolution. It has mr Parkinsons biting humor and draws the reader into the story so that he wants to be the hero Matt. It teaches great lesons about honor. In places it will tear at your heart as people die who shouldn't and you'll laugh in the midst of tragity, just as if this story was happening to you

Townshend is a genius who has spoken so eloquently for himself, to God and to anyone else who cared to listen, for more than 30 years. Sadly, though Smith relates lots of incidents and quotes tons of lyrics, it's as if he can't get a bead on the the music ... or the man.
