Reflects on experiences and philosophy
Interviews with makers of San Francisco's "beat scene" are captured by Metzer, himself a Beat generation artist, in San Francisco Beat, a oustanding and informative collection of recent interviews which relate what happened. Ferlinghetti, Everson, Rexroth and other major literary figures of the times reflect on experiences and philosophy.

A resourceful business tool
As a small business owner, I found this book an excellent reference tool. The information is clearly presented and easy to understand. At the end of a chapter the main points are reviewed; perfect for a quick reference. The delivery style is similar to a question and answer . It seemed as though the authors knew what I wanted to know, and provided well researched, informative answers. I would recommend that everyone considering starting or new to the business world get this book.

Teaching Concepts: An Instructional Design Guide
Published in Hardcover by Educational Technology Publications (1992)

Amazon base price: $37.95

Teaches the Concept of Teaching Concepts
If you are looking for an instructional design guide that focuses specifically on teaching concepts, look no further. Teaching Concepts: An Instructional Design Guide is your answer. Used either as a classroom text or as a reference guide, this research-based text is full of examples and useful strategies to assist in the concept design for adults and children. Merrill et al. recommend that the book be used like a recipe in that you follow the instructions precisely the first time, then adjust to your liking.

The layout of the book is the perfect example of concept instructional design. Each step in the process has its own chapter, which makes the book well organized and easy to follow. Each term is thoroughly illustrated and defined. It is supplemented by examples, which compliment the design of the book, and questions, which keep the reader involved. The book is divided into ten chapters providing in-depth outlines of the 10 steps involved in the concept instruction design process. Thankfully, the authors did not forget the all-important formative and summative evaluation components of instructional design. The appendix contains sample concept lessons designed by three of Dr. Merrill's former students. There are also several concept lessons that have been completed and included for reference.

The bottom line: When seeking an instructional design guide for concepts, I would highly recommend this text to instructional designers, instructors, students, and anyone in the instructional design field.

A must for anyone starting with networks
There's little question that networks are more important now than they ever have been. This book is perfect for anyone who wants a broad understanding of computer networks, both of their history and evolution, and important issues today. If you're looking for a text covering network programming, look elsewhere, since most of the code samples are only there for illustrative purposes, and are thus brief or incomplete. Instead, what you'll find here is extensive coverage of issues involved with network design, such as network protocols, security issues, congestion control, routing algorithms, link-level technologies, and more. Although the reading can be slow at times, given the somewhat theoretical nature of the subject, overall the authors have done a great job of keeping the discussion interesting and relevant. Of special note were the end-of-chapter discussions of unresolved issues facing today's network architects and designers.

All in all, if you want to gain an understanding of computer networks, this book will provide a great foundation to build upon.

This is about the best it gets folks...
Bottom line: if you're even interested in learning about the subject and it's various areas and applications, and you have even a below average understanding of computer science in general, this book is excellent. Excellent for all levels of learners. It is a required text here at the University of Illinois @ Urbana-Champaign in the Electrical engineering and CS departments, and although it is a 300 level course, it is a solid text to accompany the high powered course. Overall excellent, not to mention the authors are truly scholars (one is a Cisco Systems Fellow- how many of them are there! ).

How about 6 stars
Excellent organization! Excellent choice of topics! Excellent approach to presentation and teaching!

Very timely as far as material covered. It covers issues that are just starting to be covered in the computer industry weekly magazines.

Bypasses basics we are all familiar with and goes right for the good stuff network admins and designers want to know more about, like switch design, congestion control, and high-speed networking.

The writing is more advanced than most of the rag books out there, but non-computer science majors will easily follow along and appreciate the ease with which excursions into advanced topics are handled.

Another plus is the physical layout and design. It is printed on quality paper with nice type. Very appealing.

With all this raving, you might think I work for the publisher. Actually, I write for another publisher. I first browsed this book in a bookstore and immediately knew it was a winner. I will be referring my readers to this book.

Engaging techno-thriller
War erupts in South Africa and Larry Bond brings us there with another of his authoritative journeys into conflict and high-tech modern warfare. I've enjoyed all of his books, especially "Cauldron", in fact I read any military fiction I can get my hands on. "The new WWII novel, "The Triumph and the Glory" was spellbinding, and brought to mind the best of Larry Bond or Tom Clancy, set during WWII. Read Vortex, by all means, you will enjoy it!

Great techno-thriller
In "Vortex" Larry Bond once again proved that he is a master of combat writing. Aside from a superb appreciation of weapons and strategy, bond has a gift for character writing. He does a superb job of capturing the tension and terror of war and crisis, from the president down to the lowest private. But he also knows when to advance his plot through narrative rather than dialogue. When reading Bond's books, one never gets the feeling that the dialogue was written solely to reveal information rather than to expand on the character.

The other key area where Bond shines is his use of original locales. In "Red Phoenix" when everyone else was writing about war in Europe, he was writing about a much more likely war in Korea. In "Vortex" he writes about South Africa and what might happen if the Apartheid system had led to revolution and war. Although the dynamics of the region have changed since its writing, "Vortex" still captures the dynamics of a major conflict in sub-Saharan Africa and how poverty and social injustice might lead to war.

In the end "Vortex" while dated, is still an excellent read. Bond captures the intensity of combat like no other writer, and his appreciation of the machinations of geo-politics is second to none. In the end, Bond's novels are good because the make the reader think about unexpected situations in the world, what they might result in, how they would want their leaders to react, and what the consequences of that action might be.

The best Bond
This is the best of his for books, in my opinion, but only slightly ahead of "Red Phoenix" and "The Enemy Within". It is an excellently written book about a part of the world that hasn't had any major wars in a while, unlike his other books, but he shows the frightning way wars do happen, and how nations ten thousand miles away and more get sucked into conflicts. When a far-right fanatic seizes control of South Africa's government, all hell breaks loose across the world. Virtually all aspects of land war are explored: infantry, armor, air combat, paratroopers, anti-guerilla, even some battleship action in there (my favorite part). An excellent read

So Why Should I Read This Old Book From 1989?
Because North Korea's leader Kim Jong Il may STILL believe he can pull off an invasion of South Korea in a way similar to what is described in "Red Phoenix". This is a very enjoyable and readable military techno-thriller written by Larry Bond who collaborated with Tom Clancy in writing "Red Storm Rising" in the mid 1980s. This book mixes remarkably accurate details of military activity and combat planning in Korea to create a very plausible plot in 1989 for the start and action in a Second Korean War. Some of the details are now dated by the introduction of 'smart' technology but, speaking as the US Air Force veteran of Desert Storm that I am, this is what it was like in military culture towards the end of the Cold War. Larry Bond uses his knowledge of the geography and politics of the Koreas to create very plausible events and characters that make this book a real pageturner. He tries to get you into the minds of the 'Cult of Kim' so you can understand why North Korea acts in the belligerant, Stalinist way it still does to this day.

Time, so far, may not have proven this book accurate, but it will help you to understand about why Kim Jong Il and North Korea are still threats to Asia and America to this day. I have been told that "Red Phoenix" is still 'required reading' for many American military personnel who get assigned to posts in and around South Korea. Give it a try if you enjoy military thrillers and like to be up on world events.

Starts slow, but be patient, its worth the time to read.
Larry Bond is good at the Modern Day Geopolitical Thriller. Because Mr. Bond gives the reader so much background information in this story line, Red Phoenix seems to start off a little slow. However, hang in there, the book picks up speed about 100 pages in and keeps you on the edge of your seat for the next 600 pages. North Korea takes advantage of civil unrest in South Korea with a rapid, well planned massive invasion. The Americans and the South Koreans are caught off guard and suffer heavy casulties early but manage to pull off some brillant tactics later on. Mr Bond, gives an unbelievable account of modern naval warfare that is every bit as exciting at air to air dog fighting. This is a must read book

SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Larry Bond ROCKS!!!!!!!! His novel Red Phoenix is one of the best war stories I've ever read, with more action than probably 90% of all the other books I've read: It's got submarine warfare, air combat (using MiG-29's, F-16's, F/A-18's, F-14's and Phoenix missiles, to name a few!), infantry warfare in blood-soaked snow, a little armor warfare, and O SO MUCH MORE!!! Red Phoenix absolutely riveted me! Sure it started out a little slow, but after some realistic (and still pretty darn entertaining) planning and preparation by the North Korean forces, the novel EXPLODES full-force 200 or so pages into the book. While I was reading Red Phoenix, I decided right then and there that it was the standanrd by which I would judge any and all books dealing with a 2nd Korean War

this is a great book
I enjoyed reading Montana 1948 for many reasons. First of all, it was a positive experience for me and it was a sad from the point of view of David (the man who tells the story). Second, it sounded like a real live person with all those problems that they had, even though the story is fictional.

Larry Watson, the author, was able to hold my interest throughout the entire novel because at first it sounded like the typical family, but soon it turns out that uncle Frank is a rapist and grandpa Julian is a selfish and rich old man. He also uses vivid language and a very good description of his characters. Third, is that I like how it sounds when David is trying to remember the story and telling it in his own way.

My favorite scenes in this novel was where uncle Frank committed suicide, because you could easily imagine him breaking all the jars and seeing him on the floor covered in blood. My second favorite scene is when Gail (mom) was holding the shotgun and waiting steadily in the doorway. This scene turned out to be funny for me because she could not load the gun and was holding it in the wrong position.

This is a book that I would recommend to my friends and family members because its interesting. It has like a twisted end, and you can never imagine that there is going to be a rape scene or that the good guy is going to be miserable because he did a good thing.

A family tragedy seen through the eyes of a young boy
With hesitation, I read this book. Upon completion, I found it to be one of the most remarkable books I have read in many years.

Montana 1948 is the story of tragedy of a small-town family. It tells of the fight for family loyalty and/or justice proceeding to the consequences of such decision.

David Hayden, the young protagonist in this novel, observes the struggle of his father who is the sheriff in their small town. His father has to choose whether to arrest his brother who is the local doctor of rape or to overlook it because of the close family ties.

It is told through the boy's eyes, but in telling it shows a simple picture of emotions of all the adults involved in this tragedy--the angst of father in making the decision, the downfall of his uncle who goes to extreme lengths to cover up the crime, and the starting truth finally told by the passive mother who only sees what she should see. I was reminded a lot of the book To Kill a Mockingbird, but this book is a story in its own right.

It is a simple story but it is complex in its own right. I recommend it highly.

I enjoyed how some controversial subjects were put so nicely
The title of this book describes the setting of the book. It's a small town out in the middle of the Montana wilderness. The narrator of the story, David Hayden tells about his horrifying times as his learns about a family secret his family is trying to keep from him. David listens in on a conversation about his Native American nanny and finds that she has fallen ill and desperately does not want to see the doctor, David's uncle. In those days Indians had very little respect and rights. And he learns that his uncle has even less respect and does not obey his duties as a doctor. The problem is that David's father is the sheriff of the town. He learns about the trouble with his brother and concludes that he must do what's right and arrest his brother. The problem comes in when David's grandfather gets very upset that his one son is in jail and the other put him there. The grandfather takes matters into his own hands and endangers them all. The author Larry Watson does a superb job at making things appear real. The main character is a pre-teen but he acts much older. The story takes place in 1948 but I think it seems to fit well into the society that we live in today. In the news you often hear about doctors taking advantage of patients and influential people trying to get their family or friends out of trouble to preserve their reputation. If you enjoy hearing stories about people who had to go through misfortunes and overcome them; then you would like this book. The beginning gets you set in the world they are living in at the time and can get slow. But once you get to the problems and the story starts spiraling, you can't put it down. This is one of my favorite books.
